  1. Damn. It really was the golden age for wrestlers. I thought only Hogan pulled in those type of figures in the 90's.
  2. Say what you like about this company, they sure know how to deliver memorable weddings. A hilariously cheesy ceremony begins with some wrestlers accompanying Stephanie's friends to the alter. Pat Patterson is the only one who could handle Mae Young. Test walking down the aisle to his entrance music killed me. After a few words they move onto a beautiful and heartfelt performance of "'Togetheeeerrrrrrr'. I love it whenever they wheel out the classics. All the McMahons were doing their most OTT acting. The groom was sweating profusely and desperately struggling to keep a straight face. Then "Speak now, or forever hold their peace...' Best $40 that The Game ever spent. Making the billion dollar princess' wedding as cheap as possible. The barman had done a heel turn and drugged poor Stephanie. Quite surprising that the registry officer fell for HHH's dire ventriloquist act, but it was dark. He was great throughout this. It was the angle that that made him a bona-fide top star. This may be the WWF highlight of the year.
  3. The three hour Russo Nitro's were the peak of sports entertainment insanity. This weak he seemed to have a crazed obsession with people getting covered with gunk. Seriously there's 4 separate occasions in the same show. Two lots of mud wrestling, one food fight and the spaghetti and meatballs on the bed. Of course there's plenty of sex and Russo stroking his cock as well, but you got that every week. I didn't even recognise Leliani Kai having not seen her for a decade. The TV title gets trashed. Actually every title got trashed, just not quite this literally. Crash TV = Ratings
  4. The first move of the match is a devastating head kick. Taka fails to make the referees 10 count and the match is over. What? It isn't over? See the ref stopped his count at 9 because that wasn't the agreed upon finish. Well that's okay then.
  5. Hash keeps getting knocked down by the same moves over and over and over again. They both end up looking terrible in different ways. An abysmal attempt at pro wrestling by Ogawa. NJ also manages to make their #1 draw of the decade look like a complete joke. Eventually Inoki can't take anymore and calls off this abomination. Well you booked it you idiot. Fuck this shit.
  6. According to this report Austin was making $5-10m a year. Not for himself I would wager.
  7. I really don't want to know anything about any wrestlers penis.
  8. I also despised Yasuda as a heel and hated his IWGP Title reign. Quite simply he was given the belt because he'd just won a high profile MMA fight at an Inoki Bom-Ba-Ye show. NJ bookers were running the tours. Then a half-senile Inoki would call the shots on the big shows without even watching on a weekly basis. To be fair to Yasuda though I did like him as a face in the late 90's. He was a clumsy, loveable oaf who actually had a lot of charm. Plus he had a very successful career in Sumo so he got plenty of fan support because of that. There were similarities with Hiroshi Wajima in the 80's. You could even make the argument that Yasuda was a good heel. He generated a level of hatred rarely seen amongst Japanese fans. I'm not sure it's the type of reaction that's good for business, but Yasuda certainly had the personality to make an impression on people.
  9. The hilariously inappropriate Mae Young gets sozzled and embarrasses herself at the party. After giving the gifts and some worldly advice to the bride to be, Mae then fancies a bit of cake.
  10. Rent-a-Cops and a car being destroyed. If you're playing the 1999 Yearbook drinking game that's two shots in one chapter. Plus someone is going to jail so that's another one.
  11. A torture porn segment where Jericho ties up Chyna and attacks her thumb with a hammer. Yeah this is the sort of thing you should be showing to kids. The Attitude Era continues to plumb the depths of bad taste.
  12. These parodies are getting lamer by the week. It did sound like Sid botched the line, but you can't deny that he spoke the truth.
  13. "With the deepest regrets and tears that are soaked I'm sorry to hear your dad finally croaked He lived a full life on his own terms Soon he'll be buried and eaten by worms But if I had a son as stupid as you I'd wish for cancer so I would die too So be brave and get your life back on track Cause the old bastards dead and he ain't ever coming back"
  14. The bit I liked best was where Kimberly was hiding and David was searching for her. Clue: Look where the camera is pointing.
  15. This was so obvious and telegraphed they may as well have had a sign on screen saying this cop is Goldberg. I wonder where they got the idea from?
  16. The all white makeup did look good. Plus he floated to the ring (slowly). Dustin buries the gimmick on its debut which doesn't make much sense until you remember shooting=ratings. And surprises=ratings. He was getting paid plenty of money for nothing so I doubt he cared much really.
  17. Stacy clearly stands out in the Nitro Girl auditions. The 'fight' between AC Jazz and Spice was embarrassing to watch. Nobody gave a crap about them as individual characters.
  18. Started off well enough for the first quarter. Then the Kyoko FIP segment started to drag. That was immediately followed by a turgid period with Toyota as FIP. Shut up woman. Then when Bull and Aja finally square off it's no time at all before a crab hold is applied. I was so beyond caring by the time the stretch eventually came around. Going nearly half an hour was way to long, especially considering that the semi final had also done do. The first AJW misfire of the Yearbook for me.
  19. An interesting one here. It looked like it was going to be one type of match and ended up as something quite different. The theme was Hasegawa's continued push. She gave nearly as good as she got, and certainly threatened a win. The structure appeared to be set for a sub 15m bout with a B,M & E. Yamada controlling the build before Sakie came back and they had a finish. Instead it didn't end there and went on to become a real knock down, drag out war of attrition. A shoot style influence was plain to see. Lots of stiff kicks, submissions and down count spots. They were purposely trying to strip things down with regards to movesets. Yamada didn't even attempt her finisher. Bizarrely the most over move was the sleeper hold. Only in Japan. By no means perfect, yet I found it refreshing. It worked out pretty well. They told a story of guts and fighting spirit. Getting back up no matter how many times you get knocked down.
  20. You'd rarely go far wrong with Power on the Dream WWWA TT matches. The opening fall was medium length with Yamada kicking ass in more ways than one. I've seen some talk about her moveset being deficient. Watching her over the years I've never felt that way. There was the traditional shorter segunda. Consistently good quality through this stage. It went up a level to start the 3rd before coming back down as it lasted too long. Nothing I haven't seen done better, but it was a good workrater. Nice performances from all four. They're so well drilled and have so much ring time together there's an almost telepathic understanding. You'd hardly see any communication through 40m in which they fit in a ton of moves and sequences. Wrestling the best part of 300 full length matches a year made them veterans at a young age. A subplot here was setting up Yamada vs Hasegawa on the next show.
  21. During Stings solitary month of being a heel. It made him even cooler if anything, so no wonder it didn't work. The Stinger actually kicks off with a babyface shine segment. Old habits die hard. At least he then worked his proper role during the build. I did like how the champ was generally in control and the status dynamic between the two. The work itself wasn't necessarily all that impressive, but they were telling a story. They were permitted full length and things were coming together nicely down the stretch. Will it make the lower reaches of my annual list or will there be a HSF? It's the usual answer. There'd be plenty more US hosted entrants on my best match lists without screwjob finish deductions.
  22. I think this would've been better if they'd worked it straight up and made things less complicated. They had Santo blading and Casas being laid out on the floor for long periods so it was 1 vs 2. It wasn't necessary to have the manufactured drama of the tecnicos overcoming all odds because both men were already really over. The quality of the wrestling was down on what I might expect thru 2 falls. I think the workers were a bit thrown by the weird match flow. Business did pick up in the tercera to make it decent overall by the finish.
  23. This ended up frustrating me more than anything. When Dr Wagner Jr is my 5th favourite Luchador in a match then you've got an incredible talent lineup. There was also had a red hot crowd. Just let them go at it and you can't go far wrong. The action started off hot with Santo looking outstanding. The problem was the crippling time restrictions. 9m of action over 3 falls showed the downward direction this company was headed in. I mean what other content on the show could make it justifiable cutting time out here? Mistakes began to creep in during the 3rd as it was rush, rush, rush. Overall it was pretty good, but what might have been?
  24. It's so refreshing to see some new natives in an AJ main event. The dynamics of the two teams were also interesting. On one side you had company ace Misawa teaming with resourceful underdog Ogawa. Whereas No Fear was just the sort of duo that would be competing for the tag titles in a US promotion. Two up and coming competitors who weren't yet ready in singles, but presented a formidable threat as a unit. They worked over Ogawa when they could catch him in a nice FIP segment. Against Mitsy they came off second best in most of the strike exchanges. Don't fuck with the forearms. Generally good quality and it connected with the crowd. On the downside No Fear were lacking polish and the contest ran a few minutes longer than was ideal. The new champions now held every single belt in the promotion between them.
  25. Nothing standout but it was the highlight of the disc. Could've done with a bigger and/or louder audience. They were working within themselves and not going hell for leather. Solid stuff generally. They should steer clear of top rope manoeuvers in this style.
