I just don't "get" shoot style tag matches at all. Maybe someone could recommend an exception, but they never seem to work as a format at all. With the original UWF there were a few decent tags but that was closer to pro style than UWFI. Whenever anyone tagged out in this it lost all of the flow and any of the momentum they'd built up.

[1991-03-30-SWS-Wrestlefest] Hulk Hogan & Genichiro Tenryu vs Legion of Doom
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in March 1991
There's plenty that's wrong with this shambles of a match, but everything about it fades into insignificance apart from one particular moment. A few minutes in Hogan hits his Japanese finishing move the Axe Bomber. Well not today it's not. Because the Road Warrior no sells it Hogan has to take him down afterwards and ends up applying a rear chinlock. That's right, a finishing move used as a transition for a rear chinlock. Extraordinary. -
Hot start before settling into a slower heavyweight pace during the build. The key moment came when Misawa was ko'd by a powerbomb onto the con-crete. Despite a valiant struggle the odds were too much for Tosh. Parts of this were very good, others merely solid. The framework was there for higher but call it good overall.

Agreed that Combat-o was like a poor man's Kong-kerr at this stage. Kudo was more impressive and developing nicely into her underdog role. She made it a reasonable enough, though heavily flawed contest.

Not on the level of 1992 and Sid must have been on the phone to Shawn beforehand. That's the critisisms out the way. Wargames is such a fantastic match format with the natural swings in momentum. It had all the high points of cage matches too, plus a few extra spots with two rings and a roof. The storyline was really strong with the injured Pillman forcing his way in first and getting bloody revenge on Windham. It would come back to haunt him later as Sid absolutely murdered him with a brutal powerbomb, leading to the surrender. It made Pillman look so heroic in defeat. The others played their roles well but there was one central character in this drama.

Excellent post by stunning_grover. Once you've learnt to appreciate a certain style you just naturally watch it with a different mindset in place compared with another style. With the yearbooks you're jumping all over the place all the time and getting such a huge variety thrown at you. From match to match your expectations change as to what you expect and want to see. Some aspects of a style you may become indifferent to or like more over time. Others things you'll always dislike no matter what. I've seen several cases when an American wrestler unused to working in Japan is put in the Jujigatame and just casually lies there whilst the crowd are going crazy because he thinks it's a rest hold.

[1991-01-15-AJPW-New Year Giant Series] Toshiaki Kawada vs Akira Taue
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in January 1991
The blood feud continues, literally. Back in the days when wrestling used to be gritty and not available in HD. They brought great intensity and hatred. Taue bled like a man and both ended up splattered with the red stuff. In retaliation he did plenty of knee damage. Lasted under 12m yet felt a lot longer because they fitted so much in. I've seen NJ matches like this but it stands out as unique in an AJ setting. These two were bitter enemies before they earned the others respect through their battles.- 28 replies

Another disc, another low end lucha MOTYC. Well if you insist. Oro has a nice sleazy rudo image. He wasn't necessarily a great technician or aerialist, but he sure knew how to work and make opponents look good. Santo did some spectacular moves but this was mainly a bloody brawl. Brazo dominated early and the Son of the Saint bled through the mask. The hero fought back and gave his adversary a gusher. The swings in momentum were really strong. Initially when I started watching Lucha I disliked the one sided beatdowns, but I'm coming around to the benefits of them now. Plenty of excitement in the tercera as the stakes were high. Excellent match.

It's the standard stuff. Whatever you think about their other 6 mans from the era you'll likely feel the same way about this. High workrate but went on a bit.

[1991-01-19-AJPW-New Year Giant Series] Jumbo Tsuruta vs Stan Hansen
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in January 1991
Watchable and solid enough action. It was all a bit subdued and didn't have a big match atmosphere. Jumbo wins the titles in low key fashion.- 15 replies

90's Fujinami was a pale shadow of 80's Fujinami. Unfortunately he still got pushed as a main eventer for much of the decade and produced some real snoozefests. He did have occasional good matches though, mainly due to his opponents. This was one of them. Despite the size differential Doragon went toe to toe with Vader at times. What made the match was Vader blading right above his eye and playing off the injury angle from the 2 1990 Choshu matches. It made the monster look vulnerable, but it wasn't quite enough.

What a way to kick off the set. A brutish, nasty, dirty, vicious dog fight. The ring was filthy and the mat was torn to shreds. The setting was perfect. No turnbuckle touching, the chain was there for pain. It's a shame there weren't more close ups as they were bleeding hardway from the chain shots to the torso as well as the head. Both combatants fought dirty in a savage brawl. I for one absolutely loved the unique finish. The referee quickly counted both men down because he couldn't bear to see any more of the brutality they were inflicting on each other. Things had gotten so wild and out of hand that the ref felt he had to save them from further punishment.

I couldn't remember what happened so I was shocked there was no interruption during the ceremony. Macho's giant feather on his hat was pretty awesome amongst other things. I don't see what all the fuss at the reception was about. Jake kindly gave them a pet snake as a wedding gift, which Liz very rudely screams at. And then the Undertaker presents a lovely gold Urn which the Macho Man goes and headbutts for some reason. You'd think they'd be grateful.

It would be awesome if someone made a GIF of the Sgt Slaughter attempted chair shot. I just kept rewinding and replaying it, dying of laughter the whole time. That was absolute gold.

Yamazaki used to be AJW's most spectacular high flyer of the 1980's. Noriyo Tateno was a good worker but there was never any doubt who the best Jumping Bomb Angel was. This was at the tail end of her career and she showed here that she could have continued for several years with a more grounded style had she wished to. Devil works over the arm early on but the main body of the match was Masami's leg being attacked. Her OTT facials were really fun here. The Fujiwara comparison... I'll just say that both he and Devil are unique wrestlers. So an enjoyable match. Not a thriller but nice psychology and selling. Plus a shock finish.

Few lucha moves to start even though the Scorpion is Jpese (Reiko Hoshino). The original JWP was more mat based than AJW. When the interpromotional era started then the new JWP and LLPW were a lot closer to the Go-Go-Go style because it was more popular. This match felt more Junior than Joshi at times. I found the work quite refreshingly different. Cuty always had plenty of charisma and was a master of the bitchy look. She had an continual battle through the years with Ozaki for that title. The kind of match where they could have done it on 20 shows and this would have been the best one. Everything clicked into place and they worked well above their level at the time.

[1991-08-30-JWP] Dynamite Kansai & Madusa Miceli vs Harley Saito & Rumi Kazama
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in August 1991
Didn't like this at all. I didn't have high hopes with Madusa in there. She looked bad, or good depending on what you were looking at. Harley does a blade job. Match is short and random.
