[1993-03-27-WCW-Worldwide] Ricky Steamboat & Shane Douglas vs Hollywood Blonds
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in March 1993
I still can't stand Douglas and give him no credit. The other 3 wrestlers were so good here they could've carried anyone vaguely competant. The Blonds were a strong heel unit and Steamboat one of the top babyfaces of the era. I was surprised by just how much I did enjoy it as I'm not that often impressed by US tag wrestling. The longer it went the better it got before reaching a crescendo at the end. -
Terrific start with the tecnicos shining bright. Lovely flow to the moves and highly enjoyable action. Had it stayed like that it could've been something special but the rudos were a bit muddled on offence. The new Piratita wasn't a patch on the old one. They still had a nice surprise finish and it was good stuff overall.

[1993-02-28-AJPW-Excite Series] Stan Hansen vs Toshiaki Kawada
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in February 1993
We have a new MOTY leader, for a few weeks at least. It was a brutal head-on collision with neither warrior taking a backwards step. It's amazing how hard they were hitting each other, and that was emphasized by the magnificent selling. It takes great skill to work this stiff without badly injuring your opponant, and that should be appreciated. Right from the start they laid into each other and it never let up. Yet it also had great pacing. Oh the sheer humanity of it all! The stretch was awesome with Hansen hitting the lariato with such force he flipped Kawada whilst also flying out to the floor himself. This teased an upset, but a clubbing rabbit lariat provided a fitting conclusion to this classic.- 28 replies

[1993-02-21-WCW-Superbrawl III] Vader vs Sting (Strap)
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in February 1993
Vader intended to punish Sting in the 'White Castle of Fear'. Despite the result it was he that took the worst beating. Blading the back was an inspired idea and he was also bleeding from the ear by the end. Brutal match and they used the format really well. There was plenty of Government Muling. It wasn't paced like your regular match with high powered moves at the beginning. Really good match in this outstanding rivalry, it just needed a bit of a hotter crowd by the end.- 23 replies

[1993-03-03-WAR] Genichiro Tenryu & Takashi Ishikawa vs Riki Choshu & Osamu Kido
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in March 1993
Despite my misgivings Ishikawa gave a solid performance and Kido produced a strong finish to take it up a level. Just a chapter in a story without the heat of earlier battles. Good stuff though.- 11 replies

Had no idea this was from down under. A solid 15m bout that was similar to what they'd be doing in Japan except with more playing to the crowd. Good effort as they obviously wanted to impress the fans in a new country.

[1993-02-21-WCW-Superbrawl III] Chris Benoit vs 2 Cold Scorpio
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in February 1993
Scorpio was an impressive athlete with some fancy moves. There was always something missing that stopped him breaking through, maybe he just needed more of a push. It was always a lot tougher for guys who were bad on the mic. Benoit did a few heelish mannerisms but this was scientific all the way. Started well, though they couldn't keep the level up and it slowed down at times. I loved the finish with the shock pin at 19:59.- 19 replies

The theme was Rikki's revenge as he scores both pins, but not over the man that downed him at the Dome. It had an appropriate big match atmosphere at the Ryugoku. Plenty of fun and would've been even better had it not lasted 34m for 2 falls. It was starting to get a bit repetitive by the end. There was a heel/face dynamic and a couple of nice FIP segments. The teams were mismatched for wrestler quality, but the format is a good protector and only Hara sucked. Even guys like Kido, Ishikawa and Fuyuki performed well, with Tenryu doing a great job of leading his troops.

[1993-02-13-UWFi-Final Battle] Nobuhiko Takada vs Kiyoshi Tamura
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in February 1993
Very promising start, and it ended up more than delivering. Some really beautiful, fluid matwork. There were gasps from the crowd at some of the movement and technique. Initially it looked as if the theme might be a veteran giving a youngster a schooling, but instead Takada found he had a serious challenger. Tamura displayed lots of spirit and great mat skills as his submissions carried real danger. Despite being well down on points the upset was always believable. Thrilling fight with Takada's brutal strikes proving the decisive factor. Both men played their roles so well in this battle of present vs future.- 18 replies

[1993-02-16-AJW] Manami Toyota & Toshiyo Yamada vs Aja Kong & Bat Yoshinaga
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in February 1993
I was very surprised there was a 1993 AJW match included that I hadn't seen. OK so it's a forgettable TV main event that got included by accident, but I don't mind. -
The NJ team had a good underdog and 2 hot rivals for Tenryu. I want to see both singles matches. Alas, the WAR team comprised of 1 great wrestler and 2 turds. Hara was all washed up and I never liked him anyway. I know I wasn't the only one who found his work to be one of the low points of the AJ 80's set. And then Takashi Ishikawa was horrible. After 20 seconds in the ring he'd applied a rear chinlock. A shame they couldn't have replaced at least 1 of them as this would have been really good then.

Overall a reasonably good match, but it's disappointing compared to what I was hoping for. The first 20m were slow at times and didn't really go anywhere. It did pick up a bit after that, but nothing special by AJ standards of the time.

[1993-01-09-WCW-Saturday Night] Barry Windham vs Ricky Steamboat
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in January 1993
Plenty of arm work here. For many years past when I've thought about WCW from this era I have an image in my mind on a wrestler doing an armdrag and armbar. This was solid work here but not particularly exciting. These two could certainly produce better.- 15 replies

[1993-01-04-NJPW-Fantastic Story in Tokyo Dome] Genichiro Tenryu vs Riki Choshu
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in January 1993
Two greats of the 80's collide in this interpromotional battle. Despite being in the Dome it had heat. There was a strong rivalry and they paced it smartly, resulting in a big match feel. Choshu had a slight advantage through much of the match until it turned at the end. It had the platform to jump from good to very good level, but there was a few sloppy moments down the stretch as age caught up with them.- 25 replies

[1993-01-04-NJPW-Fantastic Story in Tokyo Dome] Great Muta vs Masa Chono

Took a while to get going. Once it did it developed into a solid encounter. I liked how they utilised the ramp outside of the ring.- 12 replies

Fought in the shoot style initially. Mr. Karate insults Liger by ripping his mask in Round 2 with proves a costly mistake. In Round 3 it's a furious Keichi Yamada that storms out of the chair and totally kicks his ass. Aoyagi pays a heavy price and the bout is eventually stopped because of the gratuitous blood loss. It's a good job he didn't work a regular schedule or he'd run dry I think. Wicked stuff here. Reminded me of a Nagata vs Murakami match (possibly late 02?), but not on that level.

[1993-02-20-WWF-Superstars] Interview: Brutus Beefcake
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in February 1993
Vince introduces Beefcake as "One of the all time greats..." -
I'm David, 32 years old from England. Looking for an 18 ye... No sorry wrong forum. I have vague memories of watching the odd World of Sport episode in the late 80's before British wrestling disappeared off the air. I first became a fan in 1991 though when I started getting WWF videos and magazines. Plus I would go to the live events whenever they toured over here. WCW Worldwide began airing at around that time so I became a fan of that to. By mid 94 I'd lost interest and watched nothing for the next 3 years. That was until September 1997 after I finally convinced my parents to get satellite TV. I started to watch Raw and Nitro every week and was hooked. That was enough for me until 2001/2002 when I started to get tired of the WWE. I wanted more workrate and less BS. But I had no wrestling knowledge outside of it, and wasn't aware of the alternatives. It was a decade ago this month that I got my 1st taste of Japanese wrestling. A horrible VQ comp off eBay, but it didn't matter. Within a year I'd stopped watching WWE entirely as I started buying tapes of all the Puroresu classics that I could find. It was a great match binge. Over the next 5 years I watched hundreds of DVD as I filled out my viewing of the promotions I liked best. AJW quickly became my favourite and has remained that way. I followed the current scene in Japan as well, but that got worse by the year and I haven't seen that much since 2007. I never stopped watching but my viewing had certainly dipped in recent years. Then 18 months ago I discovered Goodhelmets comps. With the 80's sets and the Yearbooks my interest was revitalised. From now on I may go through periods without wrestling, but I know I'll keep on coming back to it. With the yearbooks they'll always be things I want to watch. If they keep coming out then that's my viewing sorted for the rest of the decade.

You can split posters on wrestling forums into 3 basic catagories. Trolls, Fanboys and Hardcores. Fanboys and Trolls have little to no interest in classic wrestling, they only care about current stuff. So pretty much every poster at this site are the Hardcores, and extremely knowledgable about wrestling. The average age also seems to be about twice what you'd get at some other places, so you don't have a bunch of 14 year olds trolling each other all day. I think most people here have been watching wrestling longer than they've been alive. The PWO forums are well moderated and extremely well structured to promote discussion with the subforums.

Spot on with these. Don't like the first one at all. Haven't seen the other two. I don't know if you've watched them? Just looked at Punq's list and he rated them both badly. I would recommend the following 3 matches instead: 1/11/1998 Chikayo Nagashima & Mayumi Ozaki vs Dynamite Kansai & Cuty Suzuki 2/11/1998 Manami Toyota & Kaoru Ito vs Hikari Fukuoka & Tomoko Kuzumi 3/6/1998 Hikari Fukuoka vs Tomoko Kuzumi Not stuff I've watched for ages. Looks fine. Didn't like the 1st match here. There are a couple of strong secondary matches on the other shows here: 2/2 Megumi Yabushita & Sumie Sakai vs Momoe Nakanishi & Nanae Takahashi 7/5 Sumie Sakai vs Hiromi Yagi I wouldn't touch either of these LCO matches. They have an 8 woman elimination match on the 2/15 show which is better than both, though not must see. Plus go with the 5/6 match Flik recommended. Yep this is good. From the Jaguar Yokota retirement show rather than AJW. Decent though not essential.

Definate no vote from me on a 40 disc set. 30 is already comprehensive. Surely people can just get the Raw and Nitro sets from that year if they want to see every angle. Here are some Joshi matches not mentioned which I recall liking a lot: AJW 6/17/1997 LCO vs Manami Toyota & Toshiyo Yamada 6/18/1997 Tomoko Watanabe & Kumiko Maekawa vs LCO (WWWA TT) 8/9/1997 Manami Toyota vs Kaoru Ito (JGP) 8/9/1997 Aja Kong & Kyoko Inoue vs LCO 8/10/1997 Kyoko Inoue vs Aja Kong (JGP) 8/20/1997 LCO vs Tomoko Watanabe & Kumiko Maekawa (WWWA TT) 8/20/1997 Kyoko Inoue vs Yumiko Hotta (WWWA) 10/18/1997 LCO vs Kumiko Maekawa & Momoe Nakanishi (WWWA TT) Jd' 4/20/1997 Lioness Aska vs Bison Kimura JWP 2/9/1997 Devil Masami & Hikari Fukuoka vs Mayumi Ozaki & Reiko Amano (JWP TT) 9/20/1997 Hikari Fukuoka vs Commando Bolshoi (JWP) 11/16/1997 Yasha Kurenai & Carol Midori vs Hikari Fukuoka & Commando Bolshoi 12/6/1997 Hikari Fukuoka vs Yasha Kurenai (JWP Title) 012/6/1997 Kanako Montoya & Dynamite Kansai vs Shinobu Kandori & Mizuki Endo LLPW 1/5/1997 Eagle Sawai & Michiko Nagashima & Miss Mongol vs Michiko Omukai & Mitzuk Endo & Rumi Kazama 11/9/1997 Yasha Kurenai & Mikiko Futagami & Carol Midori vs Harley Saito & Noriyo Tateno & Mitzuki Endo The yearbook definately needs at least one helping of Yasha Kurenai, who people may not be familiar with but I think will like.

[1990-12-26-NJPW-King of Kings] Masa Chono vs Lou Thesz
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in December 1990
Chono is clearly in awe that someone old enough to be his grandfather could still go in the ring, and that he was really wrestling Lou Thesz. They go a few minutes before the legend tells him he's had enough.- 10 replies

My initial thoughts were that the balding Fareon had negotiated a good deal getting this match! He bled immediately and then got his ass kicked for the first two falls. Total one way traffic before the technico came back to win the 2nd with like one move. At this point I was hardly blown away. The tercera was MOTYC level! Morgan does a disgusting blade job. The juice was just gushing down. The action was super dramatic all of the sudden with great brawling, flying and close near falls. Out of nowhere it was high end, great match level. The Doctor then stopped it for the Dusty finish, which actually worked quite well because there was so much blood splattered everywhere. Talk about a match of 2 halves. Quite extraordinary. Faraon was clearly past his physical prime and was looking old when getting beaten up early on. By the end he was looking like an absolute warrior as he was kicking ass. Fabulous performance, and I can only hope to see much more of him from the 80's. Morgan who I'm more familiar with, also showed great skill and courage. I still haven't decided how high to rate this match. The more I think about it afterwards the better it seems.

[1990-08-27-WWF-Summerslam] Hart Foundation vs Demolition (2/3 falls)
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in August 1990
It's good by WWF 1990 standards, but not by Yearbook ones. They just worked for the first 2 falls. Reasonable quality. Then we have the shennanigans with Ax entering the match. You'd have to be a complete moron not to be able to tell Ax and Smash apart. That's part of the referee's job description though so on we go. Then LOD show up. Can't they just let them wrestle? No, that would be silly. -
[1990-11-23-WWF-The Main Event] Ultimate Warrior vs Ted DiBiase
Zenjo replied to Loss's topic in November 1990
Actually this was quite solid apart from the standard bad finish. I do wish that Vince and Piper would STOP SHOUTING ALL THE DAMN MATCH!
