[1992-03-07-WWF-Superstars] Interview: Ric Flair & Mr Perfect
xlynwoodx replied to Loss's topic in March 1992
Okerlund is one of the best at interview segments. Him and Flair are both on top of their game, with Perfect cackling in the background. I distinctly remember these WWF Magazines with the doctored photos, including a followup issue that had the original pictures of Savage next to the 'shopped Flair ones.- 10 replies

Four big dudes beating each other up. I know it happens in every tag match ever but Gordy standing outside the ring while Dr Death was getting double teamed was driving me crazy. There were a few clumsy spots and even the finish seemed a little weird. Still, I enjoyed this enough. The tope by Taue alone made this worth watching.

[1992-03-04-AJPW-Excite Series] Stan Hansen vs Mitsuharu Misawa
xlynwoodx replied to Loss's topic in March 1992
This thread added a lot of context to this match for me. Seems like just part of a larger story of Misawa getting the belt and it excels in that respect. It looked like Misawa was on his way to winning the match when Hansen decked him with a lariat. Misawa got a little overconfident there and it cost him the match.- 18 replies

A wild brawl that went all over the arena. Lucha meets Memphis is very apt, all that was needed was Cien Caras carrying a chair with Konnan's name on it. I enjoyed this a lot more than previous lucha matches, the storyline just made more sense to me I guess. I'd like to see more of Sangre Chicana, he was fun to watch. I laughed when they played a replay of him falling off the apron. Konnan's physique really stood out, as did Aguayo's forehead.

Hase doesn't factor into this much, I can only guess that he played FIP early on leaving Muto to battle the two giants by himself. He gave a valiant effort but couldn't last in a two on one battle. Both guys looked completely bulldozed post match, this was a finish that has me hoping for a rematch a few months down the road where Muto & Hase can gameplan and come back more prepared. Loved the theme music as well!

[1992-03-01-NJPW-Big Fight Series] Masa Chono vs Shinya Hashimoto
xlynwoodx replied to Loss's topic in March 1992
Fine match, Hashimoto has some good kicks. Kind of ended abruptly, it seemed like they were going longer but Hashimoto got the pin after the first high impact spot. Another five minutes or so would've really helped.- 11 replies

[1992-02-29-UWFi-Sekai Gannen 3rd] Hiromitsu Kanehara vs Masakazu Maeda
xlynwoodx replied to Loss's topic in February 1992
These guys had an incredible pace. They went at it from the opening bell and didn't let up. Amazing to learn that both guys had been working for under a year. Looked like two young guys who were trying to steal the show. Great striking and groundwork on display, there was a spot where Kanehara got kicked in the face while going for a leglock that just looked brutal. Really enjoying the UWFi stuff.- 13 replies

I had a difficult time with the camera work. The constant changing of angles would really throw me off, guys in the corner would suddenly switch to the other side of the ring. There were pinfalls where you can't see the ref. I still have no idea how the first fall ended. I don't know if this is common in lucha but it was driving me crazy. There was a lot of fun stuff here, Rambo especially. I quite enjoyed him nearly pinning himself after getting punched in the face and the spot where he grabbed Casas' hair to keep from flying over the ropes was awesome. Casas getting pissed and temporarily switching sides was great and the match really picked up after that. Double pin finish (I think?), not a memorable match for me really.

[1992-02-29-WCW-Superbrawl II] Sting vs Lex Luger
xlynwoodx replied to Loss's topic in February 1992
Not much to this, Sting makes a comeback and wins the title a few minutes later. An odd finish with the cross body, I don't think a lot of people were expecting that to be the end of the match. There were still 3-4 minutes on the clip after the pin, I was expecting something to happen but it was just Sting celebrating, leaving, and the rabid crowd bringing him back down to the ring. I was amused how they commented post match about Sting having the advantage if the match went long, what with Luger being huge and likely to gas out quickly.- 14 replies

[1992-02-29-WCW-Superbrawl II] Rick Rude vs Ricky Steamboat
xlynwoodx replied to Loss's topic in February 1992
I loved this match! This was such a great back-and-forth match. Rick Rude has been such a pleasure this year and get excited every time a match with him comes up. The heat he got while doing his intro was off the charts. The finish was kind of interesting for reasons already mentioned. I didn't hate the idea of Dangerously being in the costume, but its a little odd when there were vignettes of the two together throughout the night. I have to mention the superplex, which looked like Steamboat deadlifted Rude up and over. Looking forward to the rematch.- 24 replies

Fun match. Windham is such a big guy and he can really move. Zybyszko has been great. The only real memories I have of him is as a commentator and he's been a lot of fun. Also loving Ross and Ventura together. This isn't a MOTY but a real solid tag team match that shows how good tag team wrestling can be.

[1992-02-29-WCW-Superbrawl II] Jushin Liger vs Brian Pillman
xlynwoodx replied to Loss's topic in February 1992
The Milwaukee Auditorium is an interesting looking building. This is the first time I've watched a match with Ventura doing commentary in years, I forgot how much I liked him. He would always point out little things that made the matches come across as more of a competition, such as getting on Pillman for hitting Liger while he was outside the ring or explaining why wrestlers work on their necks so much. Good back-and-forth early. Liger spends some time working on Pillman's knee which leads to nothing. Crowd really picks up when Liger hits a flip dive from the top rope to the outside. The big moves start after this with Pillman showing that anything Liger throws at him, he can throw right back. High impact moves are traded until Pillman surprises Liger with a quick cradle-esque pin for the win. Fun match, great way to open a PPV.- 22 replies

Ron Wright wiping a tear from his eye after reading a letter from a fan was just awesome. I know nothing about this man but I have a feeling everything is not on the up and up here.

Clicked on the link for the match against Jack Wilson just to check out the video quality and ended up sucked into the atmosphere of the era. First fall had an interesting finish and the second fall based around Wilson's attempts to reach into his tights while keeping O'Connor in a headlock was very good. Glad I watched this, will have to watch more from this thread.

Tons of hard weapons shots. I don't think I've ever seen window shutters used as a weapon before, they make a great visual with wood flying everywhere. Jeff hits an incredibly high dropkick on the Big Black Dog and then goes to town on him with chairshots. BBD is pretty terrible. Lots of people in the front row seem to be sitting on their hands, even with all the nuttiness going on. Good promo by Lee afterwards.

I'd never seen Eric Embry before getting this set, he's such a slimy greaseball of a heel. You can't help but hate the guy. Tanaka looked like he rolled out of bed and into the ring, but he moved pretty well and the kick he landed on Embry was impressive. A little too impressive since it busted Embry in the eye. This was an example of an accidental, legit injury making a storyline better. Embry cut a great promo, the visual with his eye swollen shut was brutal.

Comments that don't warrant a thread - Part 3
xlynwoodx replied to Loss's topic in Megathread archive
When I was younger I always wanted to go to the Rumble. One year I started saving up money in the summer in hopes it would be somewhere nearby. It ended up being on the west coast I believe and I gave up and blew the money on stuff from the WWF catalog. I think it was Diesel shirt, Diesel biker gloves and some pogs. Still have never been, will probably wait to bring my son at this point. Looking through the Rumble wiki page, Flair's 92 Rumble is still the fifth longest time in history and Kane has been in the most Rumbles, by a large margin. -
I seem to remember there being a time where VHS would be available for rent for a short time period before they were available to purchase. I believe the prices were outrageous at first but would then go down to a more reasonable price. I assume the video rental places had some sort of deal worked out with the studios here.

[1992-02-29-WWF-Superstars] Funeral Parlor: Jake Roberts & The Undertaker
xlynwoodx replied to Loss's topic in February 1992
I was pretty amazed at how close in height Jake was to the Undertaker. I always forget how tall he is. I enjoyed the 'zombie Undertaker' aspects of the segment, dragging the coffin behind him and never stopping. It's really sad what happened to Jake, he was an incredible heel. -
[1992-02-27-AJPW-Excite Series] Jumbo Tsuruta vs Kenta Kobashi
xlynwoodx replied to Loss's topic in February 1992
I really enjoyed this. There were a few times where Kobashi would put a few moves together and start to take over then would get a little reckless and Jumbo would take advantage. This led to the finish with Kobashi going for who knows what off the top and getting kneed in the gut and pinned shortly after. One of those matches where you know the young guy is going to lick his wounds and come back better prepared the next time. I agree with the poster above me about the nice string of "top dog v. young gun" matches recently and they all have been worked perfectly. The full match is on youtube.- 14 replies

[1992-02-24-WWF-Worcester, MA] Ric Flair vs Roddy Piper (Cage)
xlynwoodx replied to Loss's topic in February 1992
Can't help but wonder how people managed to sneak a camcorder into the arena in 1992. Those things were larger than the laptop I am typing this on. I've never been a fan of these cage matches where the entire match is based around climbing the cage. Very little wrestling, lots of climbing. Some of the spots were probably a lot fresher in 1992 but this really didn't do much for me. Generic house show cage match, at least the crowd was hot. -
[1992-02-24-PWFG] Yoshiaki Fujiwara vs Yusuke Fuke
xlynwoodx replied to Loss's topic in February 1992
This set is my first exposure to this style and this match is the first I'm seeing of both these guys. This was just an excellent worked MMA-style match. The young upstart versus grizzled vet storyline and the crowd's reactions were just perfect. I didn't even realize there was no commentary until after the match had ended. A few highlights included the Fujiwara counter into a reversal, Fuke's striking, and the kicks of Fujiwara being the opening move of the bout as well as part of the finishing sequence. I feel like there is a fine line between this style coming across as realistic (as this match did) and unrealistic. I look forward to more of this.- 9 replies

Sting has one of those haircuts here that is acceptable in pro wrestling and nowhere else. This another in a string of great Dangerous Alliance v. faces matches on WCW television. Would've loved more time for this as everyone was on their game but the match did it job in getting me very excited for the Superbrawl matches that are coming up shortly.

So I signed up because these threads disappeared recently for non-members. Might as well participate now. This was my first introduction to Dan Kroffat not working under the name Phil Lafon. I had heard many good things and this did not disappoint. I loved the spot with Kikuchi just getting ragdolled while in a cobra clutch. Probably my favorite thing so far this year.
