[1990-03-24-USWA-Championship Sports] Eric Embry and Devastation Inc.
garretta replied to Loss's topic in March 1990
This is a bit of a step backward in time, but it's a fun one. I thought we settled this issue back at the end of the Texas '80s set, but this stirs the coals a bit. Agree on Percy doing a fine job as a face manager. Too many of them forget how to be managers; they lose their mic skills when they turn because all of their talk comes from being obnoxious and insulting. Of course, Percy has an easy target in the anti-American Akbar. He could move a bit in his lighter days, too. Was the trip Embry supposedly took "to the insane asylum" a cover for his departure once he lost the book?- 10 replies

Not a bad promo from Dundee, considering that we're talking about the South from twenty-five years ago. It could have been a hell of a lot worse. When I think about "Wild Boys" in a wrestling context, I think of the hype video from the '85 Loser Leaves Town match at MSC between Lawler and Dundee, and I wouldn't be surprised if a great deal of the footage in this video came directly from that one.

[1990-03-21-USWA-Evansville TV] Robert Fuller local promo

Quintessential heel promo for a small-town card. If they weren't ready to kill Fuller when he showed up that night, they must have been deaf.- 9 replies

Other than the "Texas is the Texas heavyweight champion" stuff, which I agree is brutal in the extreme, Kerry isn't too bad here. Remember, outside of a few exceptions, wrestlers aren't exactly supposed to be Rhodes scholars; they get dropped right on their heads for a living and kill the pain from that with all kinds of drugs and loose sex, and that's just what they admit to on TV. I kind of like the "man that leaves with the belt is the champion" stipulation, as long as they don't overdo it. Matches that end in nonstandard ways have to be booked well in order to be good matches instead of just weird ones. We'll see if we hear of too many "cheats", like Garvin pulling Billy Joe out of the ring by the ankles in order for him to keep the belt. Too many of those and the stip completely loses meaning. I'm interested to see where this goes from here, if anywhere at all.

[1990-03-10-USWA-Championship Sports] Interview: Jerry Lawler
garretta replied to Loss's topic in March 1990
Another great heel promo from the King, who's been batting a thousand since the bad match with JYD in January. He's definitely Promo of the Year so far, and considering that the field also includes Flair and Arn. that's saying something. How much longer after this did Jarrett operate in Dallas? I don't think there's much if any USWA Texas stuff on the '91 Yearbook; they seem to have morphed into Global by then.- 11 replies

[1990-03-10-USWA-Championship Sports] Texas NAWA Wrestling Commercial
garretta replied to Loss's topic in March 1990
Did this commercial actually air during a USWA broadcast? If so, I'll bet Jarrett and Lawler weren't too happy to say the least. Whatever happened to the NAWA, if anyone knows? It couldn't have lasted too long, because I've never heard of it. -
[1990-03-03-USWA-Memphis TV] Jerry Lawler vs Ken Raper
garretta replied to Loss's topic in March 1990
Only Lawler can wrestle and win a match in the last thirty seconds of a program and make it look good. This has to be the best two-week stretch of wrestling TV I've ever seen out of one performer bar none, and I've seen plenty of vintage Flair on TBS. Dave adheres to the format right down to the bitter end, which makes this scene even more incredible. There's no comparing TV like this to the stuff we see today.- 10 replies

[1990-03-03-USWA-Memphis TV] Jerry Lawler and Chris Champion
garretta replied to Loss's topic in March 1990
Another great segment here, and only now is the King full-fledged 100% heel to everyone in the studio. Kudos to Champion for taking another brutal beating. I was honestly surprised that Lawler didn't attack and piledrive Eddie Marlin in the mood he was in, but you kind of knew that wouldn't happen since they'd been promoting Lawler/Valiant at MSC throughout the program. Dave has finally reached his limit too, as he's gone from perpetually exasperated to indignant to just plain mad. It says something that the only thing that can save Memphis from heel Jerry Lawler is........babyface Jerry Lawler, whom we're apparently getting back before too much longer. It'll be interesting to see how they get there from here.- 10 replies

Lawler destroys the studio for the second week in a row, which will no doubt result in another new set (and more free advertising) the following week. Nate takes a pie in the face, a pitcher of milk over his head, and a chairshot to the head, all in the name of making the King happy. It's interesting that they showed Nate as angry enough to actually shove Lawler, which of course earns him quite the royal (ahem) buttkicking. I notice that the guy playing Nate was in wrestling gear. Is he anyone famous? A bit strange that the promoter and the head referee would come out to break up this kind of a beatdown. In other places, unless the victim was another name wrestler, they were left to their own devices.

Nice video for the Southern Rockers, plus another random word from your new Unified champion. This definitely isn't New York or Atlanta.

[1990-03-03-USWA-Memphis TV] Jerry Lawler and Furniture!
garretta replied to Loss's topic in March 1990
The King gets his recliner and plugs a personal appearance. Dave's more than content with his barstool. No offense to Lance, but I don't think he'd have taken this stuff in his stride nearly as well. Dave and Lawler are approaching Monsoon/Heenan levels of chemistry and are a joy to watch together.- 10 replies

Just a few more twists of the knife from the new champion while Lawler sits silently pouting. What's this idea Nate has for making the King happy? Stay tuned!

Brilliant segment from Lawler, as he turns from furniture-ordering cohost to aggrieved former champion in the blink of an eye. Love Dave getting in his licks, and also Jerry blatantly trying to hide behind the disqualification rule, saying that both him and Jimmy should have been DQ'd before the pin ever took place. For one of the few times in history, a Memphis segment ends with a silent King, rejected (albeit temporarily) by his subjects. More great TV from WMC.

[1990-03-03-USWA-Memphis TV] Jerry Lawler vs Jimmy Valiant
garretta replied to Loss's topic in March 1990
This is what happens to the King when both the chain and the fire let him down. Nice to see the celebration when Boogie wins the belt, as he's one of the few in Memphis who can get the crowd behind him against Lawler at this point. As for Lawler defending the belt in Dallas after he lost it, the rule usually is that the old champion still defends the title until the loss is shown on TV. If the Dallas match was 3/2 and the Memphis loss was shown for the first time the next day, the loss "hadn't happened" yet, and thus Lawler was still the recognized champion. Who was the guy in the tux who got Jimmy's first hug during the celebration? Anyone we're supposed to know?- 10 replies

More of the same nonsense we've heard from these two since the beginning of February, though Hogan at least manages to talk in his normal speaking voice. I thought for a minute that Warrior would get so caught up in his ranting that he'd forget to sign the contract. No such luck. I remember the match, and it outshone its hype so much it wasn't funny. The match was as much of a classic as these two could stage; the hype was utter dreck from start to finish.

[1990-03-31-WWF-Superstars] Wrestlemania VI Report w/Gene Okerlund
garretta replied to Loss's topic in March 1990
These are the pay-per-view rundowns I remember, and absolutely nobody could do them like Mean Gene. Steve Allen stole the segment with his new single "Myself". It had a nice beat, and you could dance to it, albeit slowly. -
[1990-03-31-WWF-Superstars] Brother Love: Randy Savage & Sensational Sherri
garretta replied to Loss's topic in March 1990
Sherri's the star of this segment, as she seems like a crazed jungle cat who can't wait to get her hands on Dusty and Sapphire. As good as she is with Randy, though, I still prefer the Beauty and the Beast stuff with Liz. it's just a shame that Liz wasn't a better performer, as there were times when she needed to break character a bit and get angry, as in over-the-top wrestler-style angry, and simply couldn't. In terms of adding to Randy's already-existing act, Sherri may have been better. But Randy and Liz had a style all their own. Loved Jesse trying to convince the world that Randy had taken out Buster Douglas instead of the other way around. If Vince was the number-one Hulkamaniac, Jesse was the number-one Macho Madness freak. -
[1990-03-31-WWF-Superstars] Hulk Hogan and Ultimate Warrior promos
garretta replied to Loss's topic in March 1990
Boy, am I glad this is the last round of this slop. I can't blame the wrestlers; they're just doing as they're told. This is Vince's vision all the way, and it says something about the charisma of these two that little kids still followed them and found them heroic despite all this mishmash about suicide, destruction, poison dueling forces, gods, and all the rest. Now it's Hogan who's risking suicide seeking affirmation from God. If God spoke to him at all, He probably said, "Remove thy bike from my ocean, O twisted one!" To sum up, the simple "I'm gonna kick your butt and take your belt" was needed from one of these two about two months ago, but was nowhere to be found or even teased. Only rarely was wrestling even referred to, as even back then Vince grasped futilely for the WWF to mean something greater, more socially acceptable. If this was his idea of how to attain it, no wonder he and his company are a joke to this day.- 10 replies

[1990-03-31-WWF-Superstars] Hart Foundation and Demolition
garretta replied to Loss's topic in March 1990
Nice bit of foreshadowing indeed. Considering that the Harts squashed Nikolai and Boris in less than twenty seconds, Jesse's warning was a laugh-out-loud moment if ever there was one. I know this couldn't possibly have happened given Andre's failing health, but a Harts/Colossals program would have been interesting if the Colossals had kept the belts at Mania. -

[1990-03-24-WWF-Superstars] Hulk Hogan and Ultimate Warrior promos
garretta replied to Loss's topic in March 1990
A little more sense is made here; Warrior is basically saying that he isn't scared of Hulkamania, but Hogan's scared to death of the power of the Warrior. Hogan doesn't need a translator; he says that he's the greatest WWF champion of all time, and he'll prove it to the Warrior at Mania VI. Interesting that Warrior drops his experiment with that Brooklyn/Jersey accent he's been sporting the last few weeks; maybe this was done around the time that Vince decided that this really would be a face/face match. (I don't care if it's ever been reported or ever will be reported; I'm 100% convinced in my own mind that Warrior was going heel at some point until Vince changed plans midstream,) -
[1990-03-24-WWF-Superstars] Jesse Ventura picks a winner
garretta replied to Loss's topic in March 1990
And twenty-five years later, the Kings still call it home. It's nut processing plant, by the way, as is emphasized by Vince's little dig at Jesse. This week the Bod is a full-fledged Ultimate Maniac, and once again the world is turned on its head. I'll say it one more time: Jesse's doing better promos for this match in a combined total of twenty seconds than the participants have in two months. Something's not right here (and I'm not just talking about Hogan and Warrior). -
[1990-03-17-WWF-Superstars] Brother Love: Heenan Family
garretta replied to Loss's topic in March 1990
Yay! Someone in a WrestleMania promo actually makes sense! Leave it to Uncle Bobby. He produced a lot of the promos for other guys, so he had to know how off the rails some of them were getting. That might have been one of the reasons for the lack of the typical Heenan comedy, and it was a nice change. Also good to hear Haku and Andre talk, even if they couldn't really be understood except for Andre's last line, which was a classic. Like I've said before, how different would the Hogan/Warrior promos have been if Heenan had been managing Warrior? -
[1990-03-17-WWF-Superstars] Hulk Hogan and Ultimate Warrior promos
garretta replied to Loss's topic in March 1990
Warrior actually makes a weird kind of sense here: he'll protect Hogan from Bravo and Earhquake as much as Hogan needs it, but not from Warrior himself. Hogan compares the combination of his power and the Warrior's to a total eclipse of the sun. Keep in mind, Vince never wanted us to see this as a wrestling match between two human beings over a couple of belts. In order to buy into these promos, you had to accept without question that Hogan and Warrior are not human. They are two deities who happen to wear boots and tights in their mortal form, the form they take so that the mere people who worship them are not blinded and crippled by their omniscience and omnipotence. This ain't Flair and Luger wrasslin' for an hour on the hick station, people. Only idiots like us watch that. Vince wants the discriminating, intelligent sports entertainment audience. If depicting suicide as glorious is what it takes to pack 'em in, that's just fine and dandy by him. With two weeks to go, the best promo for this match so far goes to..........Jesse Ventura. I can't decide whether that's pathetic or glorious.- 10 replies

[1990-03-17-WWF-Superstars] Jesse Ventura picks a winner
garretta replied to Loss's topic in March 1990
Now the world has flipped. Jesse the Body a Hulkamaniac, even for fifteen seconds? The WWF Is officially and completely backwards. Seriously, this segment makes more sense than any other promoting this match so far, and when you have to rely on Jesse Ventura to make sense of your main event, you're in big trouble.
