    The lack of transitions hurts this badly as they just move from one spot to another way too easily and do it too frequently. Also the finish is too sudden and doesn't really fit the buildup. Otherwise, I can't fault the violence, aggression and creativity. All in all, a well done spotfest. ***1/4

    Based on that main event, if kayfabe rules applied, the Fiend should squash Brock Lesnar in 5 seconds flat. Not exactly the ideal finish but they did make him look indestructible in a way.

    This is well said and I agree with the points made (though I'd change some great to many great). I guess I've become the resident Shawn Michaels defender but I'll say this is hardly his fault. I'm sure the wrestlers who idolized and modelled themselves after him don't remember him almost ripping Randy Orton's head off with a cravat or desperately punching Mr. Kennedy in the knee. He was able to balance that "I'm here to steal the show and entertain" mindset (which I admittedly hate) with a gritty, aggressive, urgent style in his post-comeback so the whole thing worked well usually. Others focus only on the former. Same case with Kobashi, not his fault others built their style around his worst aspects (endless chops, fighting sprit and no selling) rather than the things that arguably make him the GOAT.

    No Graves or Young and commentary is magically a lot better. Brock vs. Rey in 2019 is interesting. Their 2003 match is awesome and they probably would have knocked it out of the park in 2014/2015. Should be good though.

    Easily the best of the modern New Japan crowd. Most great matches, works well as heel or face, most consistent seller, easily the most charismatic. Can do minimalist character stuff but also work effective bombfests. Not perfect and can be inconsistent but the positives easily outweigh the flaws.

    The Bullet Club/Shibata angle was gold. From KENTA refusing a tag and Ishii correctly anticipating an attack as he re-entered the ring to KENTA's motivation ("By rejecting me, you did this, not me") to the Shibata's vengeance to the final beatdown/posing. They pretty much nailed it.

    Was Cole/Gargano III really that much more excessive? In fact, the excess made more sense considering the stipulation and escalation compared to the endless finisher kickouts of their first two matches.

    Seth's rib selling wasn't necessarily bad but it wasn't good either. In his defense, midsection selling is not that easy but nothing he did truly stood out. The decisiveness of the finish was odd considering how Brock was been booked since 2012. So Rollins is the ace now? Nothing else could really explain that finish.

    Yep, those two are literally the worst two options. Having said that, I'd take Rollins over Ziggler.

    That's it for Naito then? Disappointing since he is the most over and, IMO, the best wrestler in the company. But he makes whatever he is given work so I'm not too worried.

    Very interesting match. Slow build but psychology wise it was sound. But then it escalates into a fight as Saito unleashes Inoki's fury. Inoki snapping and pounding a handcuffed Saito into a bloody pulp was quite the finishing stretch. ***1/2

    Really good psychology-based match. Inoki desperately trying to fight Murdoch off only for Murdoch to drag him to the ground by the injured arm was the highlight. The finish was botched but that doesn't take away from the stuff that preceded it. ***3/4

    This was hugely disappointing. The initial portion was really fun and Naito's selling was generally good but the most of the match was just bland. Felt like a generic Ambrose WWE match. **1/4

    The women's tag title change was also sort of out of the blue. It happened on TV 6 days before the #2 event of the year with close to no build after some of the competitors had not been featured for weeks. Their scheduling seems all over the place.

    Minimalist mat clinic with a lot of attention to detail. Way better than the more highly acclaimed match they had the year after. ****3/8

    Aggressive, hateful, bloody brawling and a compact layout. Another great mid-2000s Nagata match. ****

    The build to this feud has been dominating the weeks leading up to Summerslam but the payoff is going to be after Summerslam in all probability. Shouldn't they hold off on this and focus on the stuff happening at Summerslam first?

    Good match with the 3 distinct approaches coming together, cool spots and stiffness. Joe's out of control dive was the highlight. But yeah this was hampered by the usual triple threat layout and some parts were repetitive and aimless. Also they could have taken it home 5-7 minutes earlier. ***1/4

    Fantastic brawl. Aggressive, cheating heel vs. fighting youngster. One of Inoki's best. ****1/8

    I mean, assuming that's true, it's not really your fault if people take your absolute worst traits and build their entire style around them. Also you could say 90s All Japan spawned Bryan so Jumbo (and Tenryu) is really responsible for Rollins/Richards etc. So I don't think that argument holds.

    For Bryan vs. KENTA, I'd add that match has Bryan playing the vulnerable champion role while retaining some heelish tendencies. Otherwise, great list.

    This isn't always the case in WWE. For example Cena handpicking Bryan. There have been other cases too that were along the lines of "This guy has impressed me and deserves a title shot".

    Agree, it is literally the opposite of good metal.
