  1. Nothing like a jip SWS tag match to get back in the swing of things. Fuyuki & Shinichi Nakano vs Kendo Nagasaki & The Great Kabuki, I believe from 9/17/91. It picks up at just about 8 minutes in and things are going at a good pace. The action starts getting good once Kendo slams Fuyuki on the table. Kabuki's offense is great here and while nothing otherwise amazing happens, its fun for what we see and certainly an incentive to see if more Kendo & Kabuki tags are out there online.
  2. That's probably Pogo not wanting to do a job, so that was the shit finish planned I'd think. Yeah, it was crappy as I think most people would have been cool with a DQ or double count out finish like the 70's or 80's. Although it could be considered avant-garde booking as it predates the 'worked-shoot' boom in the US ;P I too feel that wrestling is homogenized nowadays and current NJ being synonymous with Japanese wrestling is kinda a shame. People might eventually forget about the older non star rated stuff. To me this is the stuff I couldn't afford to explore on VHS when I was younger. But I've been having a blast watching "new" old, random stuff online... For instance, just finished WAR 5/5/97 Tenryu, Kitahara & Jun Kikuchi vs. Abdullah The Butcher & Tarzan Goto & Ryo Miyake Cage Match. Pandemonium from the get go with the heel team waiting with chairs by the WAR team's entrance. Tenryu nearly falls thru the cage at one point, he & Abby have a nifty strike exchange, Goto brings glass into the mix, Kitahara is rocking camo pants and ups his manliness quotient by 10% (like he needed it), and this is random awesomeness.
  3. Back to the basics, IWA Japan - The Headhunters vs Shoji Nakamaki & Hiroshi Ono 10/16/94. You can't go wrong with the 'hunters! They're bloodthirsty twin Vaders...stiff, going off the top rope, and willing to take their shots. For instance, in the first minute a Headhunter takes a tandem clothesline to the mouth, a sandwich clothesline, and a big ol' Nakamaki headbutt. Really, watch this for the bros. destroy Nak & Ono and man, do they ever! The finish and post match is vicious. A nice barbwire and glass romp.
  4. Watched Tenryu vs Mr. Pogo from 4/19/96. Started pretty good with Tenryu brushing off Pogo's strikes. Pogo responded, 'it's saw time brutha!' He got a couple good scrapes in along with a bulldog on a chair. Then our hero makes his comeback! Stiff chops and punches, yes! This is fun stuff!... And then Pogo quits. No, seriously he gets his shit, gets in a car, and splits. This totally seemed like a shoot...still..there was a car waiting there WCW style. Its all good because Tenryu beats the ever loving crap out of Pogo's second. The fans cheer this. Saves the match? Or maybe this was all planned?
  5. Just finished the blow off to the Tenryu & co. vs Onita Pro feud from '99. Quebrada has the title of the match as No Rope Yuushitessen (barbed wire) Skapegoat Hell Barricade Mat Street Fight Tornado 8 Man Tag Death Match. Man, that screams Onita melodrama! So its: Onita, Takagi, Asako & Kikuzawa vs. Tenryu, Nakamaki, Yaguchi & Hiroshi Ono from 8/22/99 and in simpler terms a C4 barb wire match. Half was clipped out so, I don't know if that was good or bad. The action wasn't as explosive as the previous matches which I feel was the result of the gimmick limiting movement. Still, it was a blast to watch! All puns intended Tenryu does make 1 last appearance with Onita in '99 so might as well check that out too...
  6. I really ought to check that tag out! I just finished Kitahara vs Akira Katayama from 10/29/91 and my goodness that was Kawada, Aja Kong level stiff. Lariats, kicks to the face, head spikes :S Katayama was wearing tiger print trunks and maybe Kitahara is a vegan and took offense...I have no clue. It was a very good match as Akira was fired up too and focused on taking out Kita's legs with some nice submission holds. At around 11 minutes this was compact, physical, and engaging stuff for something never on my radar. SWS didn't have an all star roster so I feel it gave guys like Kitahara, Sano, Ishikawa, and others a place to rise to the occasion & put on great matches. So, it feels more like a joint effort to have a good company with WWF thrown in there now and again. WAR seems like it was really more like Tenryu's Army vs other promotions through the 90s. I guess that was more sustainable. For instance, watching Onita Pro vs Tenryu and co. in '99 which I thought would be OK at best. They had a barb wire match on Onita's show which was clipped but was exciting and sloppy then, on 6/20/99 we get Tenryu, Nobutaka Araya & Shoji Nakamaki vs Onita, Shigeo Okumura & Sambo Asako. Fun crazy stuff highlighted by Mr. Puro attempting to cave Asako's old skull in. Fantastic team match. Totally surprised I would be digging these matches so much. They're full of punches, blood, chair shots, usually a blown move or two and I can't help but have a smile on my face by the end of them
  7. Grisly, insane, clipped. That's the best summary in a nutshell for Onita & Sambo Asako & Shigeo Okamura vs Tenyru & Nakamaki & Ichiro Yaguchi (No Rope Barbed Wire) 5/13/99. Its 8 minutes of a 16 minute match from what I can tell was Onita Pro's first show. Why was this clipped!? Its a shame because the pace is frenetic, guys are getting tossed into the wire, the blood is flowing, Tenryu & Onita are toe to toe...sounds like a match you wanna feature... No matter, watch for Sambo's tope of sorts and stick around for Onita getting wrapped in the wire and nearly blinding Yaguchi in the closing minutes. This is the crazy stuff I was looking for! Going to see if the other Onita-Tenryu multi-man encounters can beat this one... Edit: OK so I watched the 2nd match in the series since I was psyched on the first. Onita, Okamura, Asako & Mitsunobu Kikuzawa vs Tenryu, Nakamaki, Yaguchi & Hiroshi Ono in a barbwire rope and board match. 6/27/99 in Mr. Onita's Punch and Blood wrestling group, internationale. Man...this might be a good as the first. Only 5 minutes chopped out and Tenryu wrestles in a dress shirt and pants. I kid you not! He starts out with a tie as well but, I guess he figured it was more of a business-casual event. Nonetheless, he was still the boss. The man monkey flipped an Onita dude from the ring to the floor onto a barb wire board! Also, think that he later threw another board (wire side down) onto a group of ringside Onita fans! Like here you punks go! Yay Onita this! *faces covered in barb wire*...brutal Tenryu...brutal.
  8. From what I can tell the big Onita Pro matches are clipped or at least the ones online are...so what the heck let's jump in and get possiblythe most clipped one...Onita & Masaji Aoyagi & Katsuji Ueda v Sambo Asako & Shooter #1 & Fake Onita from 9/29/99. This is 2 and a half minutes of "what the hell am I watching!?" Starts out good with some nice Onita punches to his imposter, jumps in time then, we get Shooter #1 (?) seemingly shooting on Ueda (in boxing gloves) on the floor, and then Aoyagi trying to spinning heel kick Fake Onita in the face. Wisely, oh so wisely, the young man doomed to be a fake Atsushi Onita turns and sells it too soon to save getting blasted. Again, I say wisely because he probably got $50 for the show. They do this 3 or so more times because Aoyagi isn't happy with it. And in his defense, the first looks like shit but man, they keep going for it yet it cannot be saved. Its the Hindenburg of finishes. Its a couple minutes, go watch this
  9. Oh shoot, I missed that post match stuff with Kitahara! Another Sano gem I found was vs Kendo Nagasaki from 6/10/91. Nagasaki was a guy I remember from the BJW death matches of the late 90s but, not thinking too much of him. However, his performance in the WAR 6 man tournament match vs Tenryu's team (7/17/94) had me reconsider my earlier view. This Sano match only strengthened my new opinion. Kendo is a fine addition to the nondescript face punching, chair swinging Indy puro pantheon. It starts off kinda Inoki strong style especially with Sano throwing kicks. Color me surprised when the K man is in there countering and escaping holds...we've got a wrestling match on our hands! Sano ups the pace and tries to go Tiger Mask with running, flips, and kicks but, gets stopped with good old fashion holds and face/throat stomps. Sano replies more kicks and one that gets the K man bleeding from the mouth. Sano can't get Nagasaki up in a surfboard (legit or work?) but it just gets better from here...parasol attack anyone?
  10. Naoki Sano is one of those guys I'll always make an effort to check out if a match comes my way. His feud with Liger was one of the first puro arcs that I watched so, in a way he helped shaped my early opinions and preferences. OK whatever but, here I am with a new batch of unseen (to me) Sano whilst exploring proto-Wrestle and Romance...SWS. Two I'd recommend straight up are Sano vs fellow Indy journeyman Masao Orihara and vs Rick Martel. The Orihara match is bananas with the dives and fast paced offense...for the most part...there is a submission section in the middle. Sano goes for broke and destroys Masao at the end though. Snaps his rear suplexes so hard Ori's toes touch the mat. The Martel match is the shorter of the 2 that I found online. I believe its 8/9/91 and is roughly 5 minutes of pedal to the metal 80s technical junior offense. I loved it, it was short and to the point and put over the power of a technical pinning predicament. WAR (OK SWS) is about the hate, and guys taking punches to the mush, etc. so I wanted to get one of those type of matches with our man of the hour in there. And here we have the beaut that is Fuyuki, Ishikawa & Kitahara vs Sano, Shinichi Nakano & The Great MFing Kabuki. Sano brings the junior offense, Kabuki keeps drilling jaws with his punches, Ishikawa hits lariats and a hell of a plancha but, its all about Fuyuki and Nakano trying to beat the shit out of each other. Watch out for Nakano's pinning piledriver. Rabid pace, blood... wanna watch this again right now
  11. Branching out to include Onita Pro into the mix. Its got the right mix of old timers, guys that have been thru the ringer, friends of the promoter, and young guys who get beat up by the aforementioned groups. Not sure if there's any random westerners though hmm...Dr. Luther & Dr. Hannibal probably are. Tested the waters with two that should be good: Masanobu Kurisu vs Kengo Takai 6/22/99 - ha! Watch Curly Sue beat the ever loving crap out of Kengo. Watch Kengo piss off Curly Sue by trying his move against him (the headbutt) and get his head stomped like a empty beer can. Onita & Masato Tanaka vs Wing Kanemura & Shoji Nakamaki 1999 - Video says '99 but cannot find a show from Cagematch or Quebrada (edit: found an Onita '99 comp that says this is 03/07/99) Nonetheless, its a pretty good clipped barbwire romp. Not enough Tanaka for me though and Kanemura certainly has seen better days. Speaking of better days, with sarcasm aside, Nakamaki has never gotten this much offense...let alone have it look this good! Best Nak offense day ever. Definitely gonna check some more of this stuff out, I know there's a hidden gem in there somewhere!
  12. I wanted to do a couple follow up Sano matches from SWS but got distracted by the randomness of Bob Backlund, The Warlord & Scott Putski vs Ricky Fuyuki, Jado & Gedo. First off Jado & Gedo look to be decked out in Devo yellow jumpsuits. I'm wrong on that but they is in some Ronald McDonald looking shit nonetheless I found 2 matches online. The first is from 8/26/94 and is shown in full. Pretty fun stuff here with Backlund clearly being the interesting (oddity?) of the WAR six man tag title match. Did I mention this was for the belts? No matter...again fun stuff. Jado & Gedo were very good as usual. Gaijin team wins then a few days later they do a reverse Baba winning the title do-si-do and the natives win it back in a clipped bout...equally as fun because it seems like a cleaner version of the first match. More Backlund & Fuyuki interactions is a plus! Oh! Warlord & Putski were in this by the way...yup.
  13. Just finished Naoki Sano & Samson Fuyuki vs Tatsumi Kitahara & Tito Santana in Super World Sports from 8/5/91. Joined 5 minutes in, I believe...this is an all-action bout. Everyone was working fast and with a purpose. Kitahara brought the stiffness with his blue and pink tights, Fuyuki was still fast, there were some sick piledrivers and, Sano & Tito were going non stop. The finishing segment was great with guys all over the place including a Sano tope that apparently erased Tito from this plane of existence. Highly recommended for fans of quick action tags.
  14. Elimination Match Puerto Rico vs. W*ING: Mr. Pogo & Super Invader & The Headhunters vs. Jason the Terrible, Masaru Toi, Hiroshi Shimada & Mitsuteru Tokuda from 6/92...this was a really great Korakuen multi-man match and pretty straight for a W*ING match. Super Invader did 3 dives in a row, Toi, Shimada & Tokuda brought the wrestling to the wing-ring, Kanemura was at ringside but couldn't help but get involved as well as a surprise W*ING hero. Oh eliminations can come from getting thrown over the top rope. Surprisingly, shown in full so watch this puppy. Its hard to go wrong with these type of matches in the sleazies... Plan to see if W*ING vs. PUERTO RICO All-out War 2/5/93 is available too.
  15. Just watched the M-Pro vs WAR 6 Man as well. Kurisu & Orihara really shined here. They could have done headlocks and shoulder blocks to kill time until the finish but, they put on a show. Everyone else phoned it in until the end but, those two had something fun going on! I'm not a big handheld fan but, this had a good vantage point and the filmer kept a pretty good focus.
  16. On the topic of Perez Jr. & clipping, The Iceman vs Miguel Perez Jr. from 2-92. Man oh man! We only get clips of this match the worst fact is that all of a sudden both guys are covered in blood. Come on W*ING! If anyone knows of a full or even less clipped version that'd be awesome. Perhaps a W*ING holy grail, if there is such a thing Also Perez vs Kanemura from 9-92 is out there at 2+ minutes :/ looks awesome too
  17. Checked out: Ashura Hara, Tenryu & Takashi Ishikawa vs. King Haku, Shinichi Nakano & Yoshiaki Yatsu from 8/5/91 SWS: fast paced and stiff as a starched shirt. Very reminiscent of the 6 mans in AJPW late 80s & '90 just with most punches to the face. Highly recommended On to WAR proper: 2nd ANNIVERSARY OF REVOLUTION~ All Star Tag Wars from 7/17/94 Selectively watched the following but, I was pleased with them all especially since I've seen the matches get panned as * to ** 1/2. No way man...I'd recommend checking these out if 6 man tags are your thing. Hara, Earthquake & Jinsei Shinzaki vs Fuyuki, Jado & Gedo - Jado & Gedo were nuts in this. Warlord, Vampiro & Lion Heart Jericho vs Tenryu, Onita, Bam Bam Bigelow - Probably the weakest but Jericho and Tenryu were excellent. Tenryu, Onita & Bigelow vs. Kendo Nagasaki, Aoyagi & Arashi - This had good reason to blow but, Nagasaki went insane and Onita got to play hero. Check this one out for sure! Tenryu, Onita & Bigelow vs Hara, Tenta & Shinzaki - Pretty much the obvious default finals of the night but, it delivered.
  18. The shorter match times have been a real boon when going through what's available online. If you've got 15 minutes somewhere, fill it with a W*ING or IWA-J match I do honestly think the clipping is a plus for most of their shows. I'd like think that most of what is clipped is Muta like stalling or an arbitrary Boston Crab or two. With that being said, gonna have to check the last 3 matches of the Blazing Night show. Gotta see the Leather Face moonsault! So, I watched 2 Murdoch in the sleazies matches. In IWA Japan vs Motegi: This was pretty darn good stuff. Technical bout with nice kicks and arm work by Motegi. Dude stayed focused like a laser on Dick's arm. Everyone was buying that pain. Murdoch was no slouch either finding escapes out of holds and pounding the life out of Motegi when he could. High recommendation. Then, there's Dick vs Matsunaga in W*ING '92. This is more karate vs wrestler than, brawling which is what I was expecting. This was clipped but, again I didn't see any fault in that. Both guys really laid it in...moreseo Murdoch. For every 5 Mr. Danger kicks to the arm & body Capt. Redneck elbowed straight down to the face. Yup, this was good stuff.
  19. Hashi goes up against king prick Koji! The thing is that Koji thinks he's tough shit but, Hashi is from NOAH- the hardest hitting, biggest bomb dropping-est promotion in the world. That's fine for Hashi since Koji figures he'll practice his kicks on young Makoto's lumpy head. However, Hash-hash remembers he eats kicks for breakfast (Kid tested mother approved) and proceeds to chop and head butt the piss out of Kanemoto. Hashi brings his A game to take out the then IWGP Jr. champ. I'm always rooting against that smirking bastard! I love to hate him and the Noah Doughboy does me proud. Now that I think about it, this match reminds me of the early 90s NJ vs. WAR feud. Its good stuff.
  20. Yeah, I've been getting that vibe too. Even in SWS, he's got the attitude that he's the promotion's top star. So, he has no qualms about getting the snot beat out of himself and conversely serving it out with a smile (well, perpetual scowl). The match vs Haku in SWS was what sold me on Ishikawa.
  21. Scramble Bunkhouse Captain Fall Elimination 10 Man Tag Match: Freddy Krueger & Jado & Gedo & Invader II & & Invader IV vs. Crash The Terminator & Shoji Nakamaki & Masayoshi Motegi & Nobutaka Araya & Fukumen Taro - W*ING 8/25/93 Fantastic match, is listed in the Supplemental Viewing folder for '93. For IWA Japan, found Silver King vs Texano from '94. 5/23/94, Cagematch is showing it as a very early show...perhaps the 3rd and looks to be the first tape they released. It is a highly recommended match. Lucharesu style, Los Cowboys stiffing the heck out of each other, nice sequences, a match like this I would think to see in Michinoku Pro. Interestingly, also on this show is Dick Murdoch vs Motegi might have to track that puppy down.
  22. I've been enjoying the FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF REVOLUTION show from 6/17/93. Haven't watched the Hash vs Tenryu match yet and opted for the less herald matches. Hase vs Fuyuki is a great one which has some buzz but, I took a chance on Masashi Aoyagi vs Takashi Ishikawa and wow! Grumpy dudes beating each other up for 5 minutes, I'm game! So also checked out Koki Kitahara vs Masahiro Chono which was more like a mid 80s strong style match. More evenly fought despite Chono being in there, I dug it. Plus the Jr match of the card, Ultimo Dragon vs Norio Honaga. First Honaga match for me but, was impressed. He kept the craziness in check so when Dragon busted out the fancy shit it was meaningful and impressive... Still I thought Honaga's running neck breaker drops were the best move in the match. Looked like he decapitated Mr. Asai. Highly recommended show and I haven't even seen the big Tenryu match yet. Its been a pleasant surprise. On paper, every one of the above matches had the potential to be a massive time vacuum but, were great in their own way.
  23. I'm with Loss on this one as I felt the outcome was really up in the air and both guys gave a very good performance on this WAR super show. Both guys ham up to the crowd so it was a nice touch to pair them up. I felt each gesture or taunt had some meaning with the interpromotional feud raging. I liked Fuyuki dictating the pace (although it did seem a tad slow at the beginning) because when Hase would take over, his quickness seemed to be the key to breaking thru Fuyuki's punches, dragon sleepers and the like...only to get cutoff and sent back to the mat. Then of course there's the good old time stiff chops, head rattling power bombs & suplexes. Big time main event feel for a mid card match - its pretty great. Another feather in Hase's cap regarding great singles matches and nice to see Fuyuki still could go in '93 as well.
  24. The full tape is now up there and this is about 3/4 of the way through the 90 min. video. First and foremost, watch Victor Quinones' promo for the heel team. Absolute gold On to the match: This is all out chaos and I loved it! 4 out of 10 people have masks, 6 out of 10 people are wearing red, Nakamaki isn't wearing jeans and a tee shirt, Crash legit looks like he could win the thing since *ahem* Freddie fucking Krueger is the heel team captain. All kinds of wackiness but, its the good early 90s Indy puro kind you want in this match. There's wrestling in the ring, brawling around the ring, Freddie in the stands chasing fans, Nakamaki laying somewhere in Korakuen bleeding...All the fans chanting his name despite being only visible to 5-10 of them due to the aforementioned bleeding, Indy juniors trying to shine, Crash no selling like a Road Warrior, a guardrail, seats popping off chairs, more Nakamaki chants... This is W*ING in the best way.
  25. The full Hollywood Nightmare comm. tape is up there. There is a clipped version of this match which is perhaps the only version. In either case its near complete like 14 out of 17 minutes. Overall, its good. I wouldn't say it was one of the better gimmick matches of '93 but it wasn't bad either. They did well in keeping the action going in between trying to handcuff a guy to the cage, or trying to get some more blood flowing. I mean, blood got on the one camera so, that was pretty brutal. The real downer was that it felt one sided with Jado, Gedo, and Freddie controlling. So there wasn't much drama or excitement for the possibility of such. Kanemura was on the ground half the time, Perez was kicking ass but then got handcuffed, and Mr. Danger took a dozen seat-poppers to the dome, was getting choked with a chain then it wrapped up. The upsides: constant action, crowd was very vocal, bloody camera lens. It was 14ish minutes of fun so I can't complain. A few quality hope spots would have helped but, hey that's just my taste. Worth checking out nonetheless!
