    These two do more with less than any two guys in Japan, or all of wrestling for that matter. The result is a match that verges on being a little *too* minimalist, but these two know how to milk the most out of every pause and every moment. There are only a few explosion spots but they're all sold big, usually by the opponent as well as the guy taking the move. Onita is one gutsy bastard but falls right when you're thinking that all the powerbombs are getting excessive.

    Paul E. is pretty blatantly channeling Roddy Piper here--or is it Dr. Tom Prichard? He then switches to voiceover mode explaining the history of the Dangerous Alliance through Apter mag photos.

    Funk is an old fart, but he doesn't run around with his nose up the ass of Tod Gordon *or* Eric Bischoff. Arn vs. Sabu sounds like one of the all-time WTF style clashes.

    Cairo is sticking up for the ECW fans, so I guess he's the babyface. Peaches talks of lifting up Woman's skirt and whipping her fat cellulite can, and closes by describing an even more disturbing visual. God help me but I thought both of them cut a pretty good promo. Sandman basically says that Cairo is paying Peaches to be his whore, if I understand him correctly. Why the fuck does Styles have to be there? Get his stupid face-acting off my screen, please.

    Agreed with Jerome and the others, this is pretty much the last "traditional" WWF tag title reign, at least for a long while. After this, it was makeshift teams with singles guys and overly gimmicky teams trading the belts with no real reigns of consequence. The action here is decent enough and there's a huge pop for the Headshrinkers' victory.

    Total American-style match, with Rude's tights getting pulled down and doing his comedic atomic drop selling. And a REF BUMP. And Rude using his valet (whoever she is-- looks like Marisa Tomei but I suspect it's not her) as a shield! Where AM I?? Crowd is reacting to all the right things, I have to admit that. Sting kicks out of a belt shot but Rude executes a piledriver and kneedrop off the top to regain the NWA title. No sign of a major injury from the footage we see, though Rude certainly seems to be in pain after the match. God speed, Rick--his work fell off badly but just as with his buddy Mr. Perfect in the WWF, I think the promotion is worse off without him. Sadly things won't end well for either man.

    This set-up is more than a tad contrived. Actually a pretty good acting job by Traylor, though.

    Bockwinkel explains in greater detail his decision at Spring Stampede--the benefit of the doubt always goes to the champion. Bockwinkel announces that the title is held up and promises further news "later," but Flair is out and demands answers NOW. Hey, a fighting heel champion. Steamboat rebuts, and he's come off pretty whiny ever since that decision was announced.

    This didn't do much for SMW's credibility to have the WWF's most bottom-feeding team in as pushed talent. Well Dunn are surprisingly decent on the stick, especially Timothy. And compared to the Thrillseekers in general and Lance specifically, they may as well be Dusty & Lawler. Jericho steps it up when he has to drop the phony asskissing persona and gets to show some fire.

    Randy Savage vs. Bruiser Bedlam! Believe it or not, Savage did the job in that match. Also in is another big name: Jake Roberts will be challenging the Dirty White Boy for the SMW title. Jake is in a study somewhere, quizzing us on the deeds he's done to Andre the Giant, Randy Savage, Rick Rude, and Sting. Good to see Jake back in primo form on the mic, even if he's woefully out of shape. Dirty White Boy took a faceful of mist from Kendo the Samurai, hence the eye bandages.

    Heenan starting to explain the history of the Queensbury Cup was amusing. "You see, in 1545 Queen Victoria..." and then Schiavone pulls the mic away. This is almost a total World of Sport-style match, and way outside of Ric's usual comfort zone. Then again, he presumably booked this, so good for him. I may be run out of town on a rail for this, but I actually like the Worldwide set. It's the antiseptic cue-carded crowd that kills things--booing Regal for doing a snap mare...really? Regal wins round 1 and round 2 is a draw, despite Flair being in control for a majority of it. Jesse joins us for round 3 and damned if I haven't missed him. He immediately cracks Schiavone up by ragging on the Marines, in reference to judge Craig Pittman. Flair has been busting out some new stuff here, he even does a semi-cross armbreaker at one point. Round 3 is the best so far, as they ramp up the intensity and they pay off Flair attempting to get in the figure four. That said, this is when it becomes apparent that this would work better as a straight-up, one-week WOS match. Round 5+6 top this off beautifully--they get the story over perfectly of Regal winning the final round, but having points deducted due to an umbrella shot from Sir William. That prompts a classic old-style Ventura meltdown. Flair eventually puts this away with 30 seconds to go in the sudden-death round. Hard to rate this compared to a standard match or even a standard match with rounds, but this was awesome. This is Flair working almost a totally different style than normal, but in a hell of a lot better way than at Starrcade '90. It's the freshest he's looked in some time and as fresh as he'll look for some time to come as well.

    This was part of a deal where they'd, if I remember this right, pick two random names to wrestle each other and then draw a gimmick match on top of it. Vader accuses Dusty of rigging the draw to make it a Texas "Tornado" match. I would love for them to have referenced the alleged 1985 NBA lottery fix full-bore and show surveillance footage of Dusty refrigerating the Texas Tornado envelope. Schiavone is in a studio somewhere and not at Disney, so he gets to call it a "Death" match and complain about liberals while doing it. I get Cactus' point--Schiavone fails to mention Halloween Havoc, fails to mention the power bomb on concrete in '93, fails to mention the ripped ear...just absurd. I'll give Heenan more of a pass, since he wasn't around for most of this program's history. These two do what they can with the restrictions placed on them. Cactus murders Vader with some stiff punches and some brutal chair shots. Heenan actually says "REST HOLD," which I can't say that I've ever heard on an actual wrestling telecast before. Race hits Jack so hard with a chair that HE goes down. The finish goes a bit differently than in Foley's book--Heenan's quip is different than what's described, and Jack never actually gets up from the power bomb, though he doesn't do a stretcher job either.

    Local promos here, it looks like. Graham has got a title match with Lawler somewhere outside of Memphis. Lawler retorts Dream Machine's talk about his broken leg by bringing up his own broken leg, and how Jimmy Hart double-crossed him by signing...Dream Machine. Another strong chapter in a hot feud.

    Razor getting Diesel up in the electric chair was neat. The action is OK, with Razor doing an adequate job of carrying things. He runs into an exposed turnbuckle and is Jackknifed for the title change. Diesel pretty much shatters the mold of IC champions past.

    Yes, I remain a mark for brawling in entrance gear. Throw in entrance-gear brawling AND crazy dives, and I'm in wrestling heaven. This is easily on the level of the J-Cup matches, as Shinzaki adds a different dynamic to the usual juniors fare. He can match guys dive for dive, but he's still a heavyweight and that adds another layer of sympathy to Sasuke and his brethren. Excellent bout in one of the better months for in-ring action of any year so far.

    Funk grills Arn about his presence in ECW, and whether or not he can trust an ex-Horseman. Funk is terrific here, and Arn is just sort of okay by his lofty standards.

    Nobody with a gut like that should be calling themselves an "Ironman." Jesus, that was distracting. Anyway, this was kind of ECW-by-numbers, and we've at least reached the point where I can say something like that. Sandman looks pretty much like we expect him to look now. I guess this is Woman's debut, as she helps the Sandman give a belt-lashing to Peaches. The post-match cuts off, but I believe this is leading to the first Singapore Cane Match. Younger viewers are going to be lost as to the significance of that stip but it was a dominant news story of the time.

    There are moments here that come close to evoking the realistic, out-of-control nature of the Lawler/Snowman feud. Dream Machine is SUCH a breath of fresh air for a stale promotion. He's the first non-WWF guy to really seem to shake things up in the USWA since...I dunno, maybe the Moondogs' heyday.

    Oh, good, can't wait to see more of these. The quality of the WWF on-location vignettes has plummeted mightily.

    I don't know what was going on in Volkoff's life at this time, but it sure seems like Vince getting his jollies playing off a real-life situation, even if he was ultimately doing him a favor by giving him a job. Lawler rips into Nikolai with one one-liner after another. Volkoff manages to get in a zinger about Lawler telling the truth, and despite losing his money through bad investments still wants to wrestle. How does he afford all these front-row wrestling seats?

    Regal is INCENSED about Larry Zbyszko walking out on an interview--the same week that his statue replaced Lord Nelson's in Trafalgar Square, no less! He DEMANDS a public apology from Larry Z next week.
