Tatanka actually wrestled against Freezer Thompson in a studio squash, either this week or the week prior. I don't think too many WWF guys did that. Clips from the MSC, as a Paul Neighbors distraction allows Tatanka to level Lawler with a piledriver and take the Unified title. Tatanka's out for a promo and seems to enjoy playing a dick, even if he's pretty awkward, referring to "Jerry King" and correcting himself to "Jerry the Lawler." Big heat for him nonetheless, and a big reaction when Lawler comes out to confront him. Lawler feigns ignorance of how Survivor Series works, which doesn't speak well for him as a WWF broadcaster. Actually it's pretty great psychological warfare on Lawler's part, as he subtly kisses up to Tatanka to get on his good side to get him to agree to all this. The heel side are all champions--Tatanka, Tommy Rich, and the Dogcatchers. They'll go against "Lawler's Losers"--Lawler, Jeff Jarrett, and the Moondogs. All the belts will be on the line. Tatanka is so overconfident that he agrees to everything Lawler suggests. Wildfire is out and he's all smiles about this. Tommy Rich & Tatanka: they're the original Odd Couple. "THIS IS A REAL INDIAN HERE, BROTHER!"

Holy crap, Rich must be close to 250 pounds. He has Paul Neighbors in his corner, and after Jarrett swipes Rich's chain and gets a 3-count on him, he protests. TD Steel finds the chain and restarts the match, when Rich immediately gets a cheap victory and wins the USWA not-the-Southern title. Rich comes out looking like early-'80s Ozzy Osbourne, gloating about the former World Champions he's beaten and the crackers hollering at him. Rich demands that Dave Brown refer to him as the champion, but Dave will only say, "You've got the belt." Clever. Tommy Rich brings up a "Miss Christine" which immediately starts to make Dave Brown uncomfortable, something that goes over my head. It brings Jeff Jarrett out, and for some reason he's being held back by like 6 guys, an event basically unprecedented in Memphis wrestling history.

[1993-09-18-WWF-Superstars] Shawn Michaels, Diesel and the 1-2-3 Kid
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in September 1993
Not much to see here. Perfect/Diesel might make sense from the standpoint of teaching Kevin Nash how to work, WWF-style, but it's not very inspiring as a feud. -
[1993-09-13-WWF-Raw] Rick & Scott Steiner vs The Quebecers
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in September 1993
Yeah, this was really weird. The Quebecers had been around, but had never wrestled on the flagship show yet. And there was absolutely no build to this, no explanation as to why the Steiners kayfabe-wise would agree to this. I think the Steiners and the WWF were having contract issues and I think they were looking to be allowed to work in Japan, hence the rather sudden title change. And I get that getting the Steiners to do a pinfall job was like pulling teeth. Still a clumsy set-up, though. Really fun match. The Quebecers have lots of awesome double-teams and Pierre in particular is not afraid to bump his ass off, but they still come off as somewhat ineffectual cheating cowards, so they're almost a perfect U.S.-style match-up for the Steiners. I think I liked the Money Inc. Superstars match better, but this got lots of time and a nice long FIP segment on Scott. Scott makes the tag and a comeback, but quickly gets caught whacking Jacques with Johnny Polo's hockey stick, and we have a totally out-of-nowhere tag title change. Now that I think of it, this was clearly to set up the Quebecers as "Foreign Fanatics" for Survivor Series first and foremost. -
[1993-09-12-WWF-All American Wrestling] 1-2-3 Kid vs Marty Jannetty
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in September 1993
This had a slow start with a lot of resets and some sloppiness from the Kid, but they turned things into a very nice match--all clean, but with some intensity. Some of the exchanges sort of look cliche now but there was a lot of "non-WWF-style" stuff for the time here, like all the back-and-forth two-counts and the Boston crab counters. Not to mention the dives to the floor. Ross and Gorilla do an effective job of hyping this as a de facto #1 contenders match for the Intercontinental belt. I've said this before, but it's pretty sad that WCW is getting blown away by the WWF in terms of throwaway TV bouts--WCW was once (and would be again) the king of that domain, but not at this time. -
Pretty good match, but Chono was put away with rather easily, I thought. I know he had a nasty neck injury but he seems to have fallen off greatly from '92, both in terms of working ability and push. After the bout, Tenryu locks on the WAR Special and a bunch of guys from both promotions try to break it up. Hase finally takes Tenryu out with the golden arm bomber.

[1993-09-11-WCW-Saturday NIght] Rick Rude vs Dustin Rhodes
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in September 1993
I liked what we saw, and it was a good way to have Rude put Dustin over while keeping him strong and building heat for the Fall Brawl match. Rhodes wins the U.S. title that has seemingly sat vacant since Johnny Valentine's plane crash.- 6 replies

[1993-09-11-WCW-Saturday Night] Interview: The Shockmaster
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in September 1993
This really kind of makes Sting & Davey Boy look like morons, but as others have said, WCW had no choice. Shockmaster couldn't find the door, so he made his own door. They're trying to reinvent him as sort of an overgrown manchild, which isn't any kind of an improvement but isn't really any worse, either.- 7 replies

Interesting that even Memphis is sticking to referring to Vince only as "the voice of the WWF," though I think almost everyone knew what was really up. Lawler drops the bombshell that he, Vince, and Savage do voiceovers from a studio and not the arena! They really seem to be building to Lawler vs. Vince in the ring here, which would have been so awesome to see.
-
What an awesome contrast to the previous Yearbook segment. "We're talking WRESTLING now? And apparently WRESTLING has been reduced, in Memphis, Tennessee, to Jerry Lawler...CHEATING! Trying to set another wrestler on fire!" Vince is so trolling hardcore fans at this point. It's pretty glorious to watch.

[1993-09-11-WWF-Superstars] Interview: Jerry Lawler
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in September 1993
I bet Lawler has gotten at least as many get-well wishes as Tunney got letters and telegrams of support on behalf of Lex Luger. Lawler calls out Doink for not taking out Bret Hart. Borne wasn't leaving yet (though I suppose it was only a matter of time), which makes this turn all the more ridiculous. There were all kinds of babyfaces he could have feuded with, and with enough of a push I think there could have been interest in a Doink-Undertaker mind-games feud. We needed more of this Lawler in the WWF. -
[1993-09-11-WWF-Superstars] Update: Summerslam post-match footage
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in September 1993
This is as perfect a summation of these events as could ever be compiled. Feel the heat for this burning USA vs. Finland feud. I love that they needed a more ethnic-sounding name for Tony Halme, so they gave him one that's not remotely Finnish. It'd be like naming the Quebecers Hans and Jose. Monsoon accuses Borga of being "someone from Helsinki with the intelligence of a Slinky" (!) -
[1993-09-11-SMW-TV] Rock & Roll Express vs Bruise Brothers

Okay action, with the Bruise Brothers looking competent from what we see but not much better. They're now aligned with Kevin Sullivan for some reason.- 7 replies

[1993-09-11-SMW-TV] Interview: Jim Cornette / Interview: Terry Funk
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in September 1993
Cornette wants lemon in his water and some more Bambi coloring books. He has enough to pre-emptively gloat about how Bob Armstrong is going to have to tell his wife that he can't afford any more facelifts for her, though. Now Funk has a skull & crossbones superimposed over him--cutting a promo that Foley more or less transcribed in his first book. Spectacular stuff, funny and chilling at the same time. The closing line about "vitamins" was spectacular, and it didn't go where I thought it was going.- 7 replies

[1993-09-05-UWFi] Yoshihiro Takayama vs Hiromitsu Kanehara
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in September 1993
Between the recent performances of Asako and Takayama, now I'm genuinely looking forward to seeing what Team No Fear stuff makes the cut in the late '90s. I dunno how often that sentence has been said.- 6 replies

Smothers suffered a conveniently timed knee injury at the hands of DWB and Brian Lee, coincidentally aligning with an All-Japan tour. Smothers when he gets back will get a title match with Brian Lee, with the Dirty White Boy locked in a cage at ringside.

Rich, in a bathroom, points out that Jerry Jarrett quit wrestling when Tommy Rich showed up and took away all of his girls. Good promo even if the setting is a little forced. Jeff Jarrett rebuts before quickly being jumped by Tommy (Thomas) Rich. Long beatdown follows while Bert Prentice rants to Corey Macklin.

[1993-09-04-USWA-TV] Interview: Jerry Lawler / Interview: Vince McMahon
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in September 1993
Lawler has obtained two victories over Bret Hart in two days. Lawler rubs it in Vince's face--hey, a win's a win, even a reverse-decision DQ with a stretcher job. Vince is aghast that he's been accused of having something to do with Giant Gonzalez's interference last Sunday. SURPRAHS, SURPRAHS, SURPRAHS! If anyone can drag something good out of Gonzalez, Lawler is the man. -
Why are we getting Borga vignettes now when he's already debuted? I don't know why I'm filled with Python references today but Borga is dressed like the Gumbies--I expect him to put a handkerchief on his head and smash two bricks together. I guiltily confess to somewhat liking Borga back in the day, even though he's an objectively terrible wrestler and the idea of a Finn as a foreign menace is comical on its surface.

SUMMERSLAM WAS THE GREATEST THRILL, HONOR, AND PRIVILEGE OF LEX LUGER'S ATHLETIC CAREER and ohbythewayYokozuna'sstillthechampion and LUGER HASN'T LOST ANYTHING. "Somehow, deep in my soul, I know I will someday be World Wrestling Federation champion, just as soon as I can land a rematch with my good buddy Mr. Perfect officiating it." Kevin noting Luger's awkward chuckling response is letter-perfect. Lex's big grin at the end reeks of doth protesting too much, too. I don't mean to keep beating a dead horse, but the only thing keeping this from being as nauseating as the Sgt. Slaughter "I Want My Country Back" stuff is that it's less exploitative. It's still every bit as manipulative and insulting to the intelligence of anyone who had been paying attention to the company for more than 3 months--i.e., the very fans they were trying to cater to with things like long 2/3 fall TV matches and house show title changes.

[1993-09-03-AJPW-Summer Action Series II] Mitsuharu Misawa vs Steve Williams
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in September 1993
Doc has stepped up in a huge way with Gordy suddenly out of the picture. What a week this has been for him. This isn't up with the very best Misawa singles matches of '93 but it's a hell of an addition to Doc's career even if it isn't the best Doc match of the week. I don't have much else to say...Doc had some way cool takedowns in the early going and the backdrop suplex looked nasty without being a full-blown head spike like the ones Kobashi took.- 17 replies

DiBiase tries hard but he does sort of stick out here. The match isn't bad, but seems very short for a tag title match (it barely goes 15 minutes). Hansen & DiBiase regain the belts they never really lost to begin with. I can see DiBiase's POV here The only thing left that he could conceivably do in the WWF was lose his money and turn babyface. With no bodyguard and no manager anymore and the Money Inc./Steiners feud more or less played out, DiBiase really looked to be spinning his wheels. I also imagine the days of the WWF comping him a limo and five-star hotel room at every stop were long past. There was more money in a fresher setting in AJPW at this point than getting $300 payoffs in White Plains, NY.
