[1992-10-31-WWF-Superstars] Interview: Ric Flair & Razor Ramon
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in October 1992
Vince brings up the "rumors" of Flair's inner-ear problems, which Perfect denies. That's an odd tack. I really hated how they junked the traditional Survivor Series format for this card, though I guess it's indicative of the lack of roster depth in comparison to years past. -
[1992-10-31-WWF-Superstars] Money Inc. vs Natural Disasters
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in October 1992
The Nasty Boys, upset over not getting this title shot, laid out Money Inc. before the match started. The Disasters dominated this but Headshrinker interference put Money Inc. back on top. Odd finish as Earthquake never makes the hot tag after working FIP, and simply goes down to the Million-Dollar Dream to give the tag belts back to Money Inc. -
Han clobbers Maeda before the bell in an unexpected move and this has you thinking it's going to be a balls-to-the-wall, desperation sprint. But no, after that Maeda gets up and they have a typical match. Han does some great takedowns and the finish is a clever way to keep Han strong--Maeda unleashes a huge high kick that Han takes a tree-falling-in-the-woods bump for (with a great camera angle on it) and the ref instantly stops the match. But Han pops right back up, suggesting the referee may have called it early. Still...pre-match attack plus controversial early-stoppage finish adds up to a match that would have been much more effective as a brisk 10-minute bout instead of the marathon we got.

[1992-10-25-WCW-Halloween Havoc] Sting vs Jake Roberts (Coal Miners Glove)
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in October 1992
The action that we see is actually better than I expected given this match's reputation, but the coal miner's glove certainly wasn't much of a factor. Jake then has to do a recreation of Bela Lugosi fighting the octopus in Ed Wood, forcing a snake that may or may not even be alive to "bite" him.- 15 replies

[1992-10-25-WCW-Halloween Havoc] Paul E. Dangerously and Madusa
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in October 1992
Surprised Paul E. didn't babyface himself in front of that Philly crowd with that promo. Madusa unleashing the big kick is one of the markout moments of the year. Then Paul screams "COME ON, BITCH" over the mic which must have raised a number of eyebrows in 1992.- 10 replies

This is a strong match that was just too long for its own good. I know the Gordy no-show or firing or whatever threw everybody off, but the draw simply wasn't necessary once he was out, and putting yet another 30-minute draw in a PPV tag title match was a little much. I actually liked the IDEA of the false finish, because I like it when tags and legal men are accounted for and the concept in general is respected. But the execution was pretty lousy on all fronts. On the plus side, this was probably Dustin's most complete performance to date--he matches up well trading shots with Doc and he works a strong FIP segment even if it goes a little long. All four guys came to play but Dustin and Austin were clearly working ahead of their partners here. Dustin and Doc worked great together, to the point where now I want to see a singles match between the two.

[1992-10-25-WCW-Halloween Havoc] Ricky Steamboat vs Brian Pillman
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in October 1992
This took a bit to get going but it ended up pretty decent. I am struck by how long it's taking for Pillman to really get working heel down. I get that it was new to him, but I always thought, for whatever reason, of Pillman as having a great mind for the business--may not be fair, but I thought he'd adapt quicker. As an undersized heel he probably could have stood to add some more Memphis stooging spots to his arsenal to go along with stuff like faking the knee injury. (The PeteF of ten years ago is aghast that I would suggest that instead of doing more moves.) This is one of the first times I've seen the fish-out-of-water spot actually end in a pinfall.- 8 replies

It's covered in the 1990 Yearbook section, I think in May. Basically the Horsemen cut promos on Rocky King and the Junkyard Dog talking about how they didn't like having to "associate with their kind" and how they were going to show JYD "what we do to people like you back in Minnesota." That actually makes it sound tamer than it was--Flair did just about everything short of throwing out racial slurs (other than maybe "boy," which is bad enough).

Decent match, but a lot better when the babyfaces are on offense. Pillman still seems to be iffy on working heel.

[1992-10-24-WCW-Saturday Night] Music Video: Van Hammer
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in October 1992
Footage from the '91 video with added shots of Hammer at a lake and riding a motorcycle and walking through some pubescent fans. One of the females calls out his name, so he turns around and invites...two boys to come with him. WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT? Why does this guy still have a job?- 10 replies

[1992-10-24-SMW-TV] Rock & Roll Express vs Heavenly Bodies
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in October 1992
I think this is a legal precedent that goes back to Rousimoff v. Piper, when Andre got carried off during a tag match and then came back, and the match resulted in a DQ. Killer Kyle helps the Bodies overwhelm Gibson & Morton, and the Bodies go to work on Gibson's hand ("so he can never talk to his mother again!") Good match and angle even if the match ending didn't make the greatest sense. Have Gibson come in swinging a chair or something.- 9 replies

Tracey laments the corporate, non-wrestling people at Turner who wanted the Southern Boys to drop the non-flashy redneck gear in favor of shiny cowboy gear. This rambles a bit, but it's an effective way of hitting the reset button on Smothers' heel turn.

[1992-10-24-USWA-TV] The Moondogs and Jerry Lawler and Eddie Gilbert
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in October 1992
This would be the second King Killer, I believe--the first was Jerry Lawler in disguise. Eddie Gilbert makes a surprise run-in alongside Lawler and Jarrett to run the Moondogs off after a squash. I think this is yet another return to the territory for Gilbert after walking out. Eddie & Doug seem like fresh opponents for the 'dogs, as it's been awhile since Lawler has been in the Unified title picture. -
[1992-10-24-USWA-TV] Interview: Jerry Lawler & Jeff Jarrett
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in October 1992
Doug Gilbert is put out of action courtesy of the Moondogs in Kennett, Mo. Looks like the JYD is gone as well. Todd Champion has undergone quite the transformation. -
[1992-10-24-USWA-TV] Brian Christopher vs Danny Davis
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in October 1992
Brian Christopher has been accused of being a chicken, so in this match the loser gets hit with a dozen eggs. By God, it doesn't get any more Tennessee wrasslin' than this. The match itself is one of the better Memphis studio bouts, and is all-action with some fairly high-end offense for the style. Christopher is so incensed and humiliated that he challenges Davis to a loser-leaves-town rematch, and eventually baits him into accepting. -
[1992-10-24-WWF-Superstars] Interview: Ultimate Maniacs
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in October 1992
I don't like this alliance in the slightest, but Savage's promo (with a long Chris LeDoux quote) is awesome. Even Warrior is okay. But I'm still ready for the Perfect turn.- 11 replies

[1992-10-23-UWFi-Combat Sport] Kiyoshi Tamura vs Kazuo Yamazaki
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in October 1992
Feels like it's been forever since we've seen Yamazaki. The opening to this is one of the greatest shootstyle openings in history, and if they'd kept that pace and intensity up we'd be talking about a MOTD contender let alone MOTY. As it is, they can't, so we're left with "just" the shootstyle Match of the Year instead. Great, pro-wrestling-style finish, too.- 10 replies

That guy's going by the "stick guys in a time machine and drop them in another period, unchanged" method of evaluation, which doesn't work in real sports or in wrestling. If you're going to move guys to other time periods as a thought experiment then you have to grant them access to the training methods, supplements (*cough*), and general standards of the time. Why are we to assume Tully Blanchard would have maintained his '80s look if he were around in the present day? Then there are the blatant inaccuracies--JYD was ripped and in shape in the early '80s at his Mid-South peak, and would be a guy that the WWE would be all over.

[1992-10-21-AJPW-October Giant Series] Mitsuharu Misawa vs Toshiaki Kawada
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in October 1992
Baba had to be seeing dollar signs in this as a full-blown rivalry, right? Even if Jumbo's status may still have been up in the air? The chemistry these two have as opponents is just as apparent as what they have as partners. This isn't as intense and hate-filled as this would become later, but the dream-match dynamic is just as effective. One of the best AJPW singles matches of 1992.- 19 replies

Solid tag match, with Sasaki & Hase getting a chance to show a lot on offense. Even in New Japan as opposed to All-Japan, this result seemed to be fairly foregone, and Choshu & Hash do come back rather easily, but it was fun while it lasted. The Riki Lariat to the back into the Hash DDT was definitely an effective transition move.

The closing segment was a complete technical disaster. The ring mics apparently weren't supposed to be cut and they were--Bischoff was supposed to ask Sting directly what it was he wanted. Then after the lights went out a spotlight was supposed to follow the vulture from its perch in the rafters to the ring, where it was supposed to have a written note that read "Hogan's soul." And as Steve Austin said in that ECW promo, WELL ALL THAT SHIT NEVER HAPPENED. So the NWO gawks at the thing for a few minutes (I vividly remember Nash rearing his title belt back like he was going to hit it) and the show goes off the air early. Naturally on the next Nitro, JJ Dillon has to talk about Sting "speaking loud and clear" that he wants Hulk Hogan even though nothing of the sort was said. After weeks of Dillon having to act like a clueless imbecile he apparently correctly interprets a vulture sitting on the ring ropes as Sting's ultimate goal.

[1992-10-17-WCW-Saturday Night] Up Close w/Paul E. Dangerously
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in October 1992
Welcome back, Paul E. Tease of a Rude/Paul E. break-up, as Dangerously has signed Rude for two title matches at Havoc, with Madusa banned from the U.S. title match. Then he takes shots at Madusa, then gets worked up when he's told that Rude wants to have a meeting with him. Paul E. is incensed that Schiavone dare ask him questions that he didn't run by him beforehand.- 10 replies

[1992-10-17-WCW-Saturday Night] Cactus Jack & The Barbarian training
