Apologies for the incredible delay between posts. To make up for it, in the near future, I'm going to make a massive post of links to all sorts of Midwest matches from 2011 available on YouTube. Adam Pearce is coming to Des Moines to defend the NWA World's Heavyweight title. This is the first time in over 25 years - since Ric Flair defended against Dusty Rhodes in 1986 - that the championship has been defended in Des Moines. The NWA was officially founded in Iowa in 1948 and Orville Brown, the first recognized champion after the official formation, was considered to have won the belt in Des Moines. So there's some really cool history to the title in relation to the city. If you live within driving distance, this event will definitely be worth the trip. Lots of great matches on the card. 3XWrestling - Divide & Conquer 2 Friday - January 27th, 2012 Baratta's@Forte Center 615 3rd Street Des Moines, Iowa 50309 Doors open at 6:45 pm for advance ticket holders Doors open at 7 pm for everyone else Bell time is 7:30 pm Featuring: NWA World's Heavyweight championship - First defense of the title in Des Moines in over 25 years! It's funny you say that about the Jericho/Michaels ladder match. I've only watched it once - live on PPV as it happened - and at the time, I honestly thought it was the best ladder match I've ever seen. Totally blown away by it and remember it being incredibly dramatic. I've been meaning to rewatch it for a long time now. I remember loving the finishing moments of the bout. Certainly something to watch as part of this project. Was it on the same PPV as the hilarious Triple H/Jeff Hardy match where Hardy crushes Hunter with a swanton, only for Hunter to immediately crucifix him for the pin? Saw it in a movie theater (the last year they spent the money to show WWE PPVs, I believe) and a girl sitting near me went from absolutely thrilled for Hardy to literally crying about Hunter winning in such quick fashion.

Regarding Bret Hart's "fighting champion" gimmick - this is precisely the reason Bret Hart became my favorite wrestler as a 9-10 year old. I thought it was so incredibly cool that there was finally a champ that would defend all the time against anyone that faced him (or, they at least did an awesome job of presenting the idea.) If they give Daniel Bryan the belt in the future, they should use this as an example.

And again. I'm failing at the internet right now.

[EDIT] Oops, wrong thread.

As previously noted, Wyatt vs Sterling did go 70 minutes total. I was at Danielson vs. McGuiness live. It was announced as a 60 minute draw, but I've read and heard many reports that they actually wrestled 74 minutes and just called it a 60 minute draw. It was a really, really awesome match with a very dramatic finish. I don't remember it being a match talked about much at the time, but I thought it was phenomenal live.

I think you all will get a kick out the kids in this video - starts right before the first kid hip-swivels. There's only about 10 seconds of it here, but this took place at our September event. In October, the kid in the red shorts dressed up as Devin Carter (the heel he's taunting) as part of our costume contest (which I should put photos of up, incredible turnout and awesome wrestling costumes!). Anyway, the kid wins the contest, the faces bring him into the ring later that night and helped him do the "schoolyard trip" on Devin Carter, so he pushed Carter over the top of a face crouched behind him and Carter flips outs. And the top prize for winning the contest was getting to commentate a match with me that night. I haven't heard how it came out yet on video, but he actually did really well for a young kid and we had some cool exchanges about bad guys cheating and how his principal wouldn't let that happen at school.

I loved Alex Wright when I was younger, I remember Wright and Sting being my favorite WCW wrestlers at this time. When I do 3XW commentary on Mike Sydal's matches, who won the award in 2009, I always mention that Sydal won the award "also held by the likes of Ric Flair, Ricky Steamboat and "Das Wunderkind" Alex Wright!"

http://www.thesource.com/articles/101392/E...0l14vbme57avtp1 This is a fascinating interview with Pusha T, a rapper whose new album includes a song with a long Flair promo as the intro. The link also includes the song. Some interesting analysis of Miss Elizabeth as well.

3XWrestling 6 Year Anniversary Event - Des Moines, Iowa - July 29, 2011 Results from an awesome night of action! Fans were handed a ballot as they came through the door to vote for Zach Thompson's challenger for the Pure Wrestling title. 1. Jimmy Rockwell, Tyler Cook and Matty Starr beat Gage Octane, Devin Carter and Casanova of Genesis. Rockwell pinned Carter after a Rock On (Swanton) Bomb, preceded by Matty nailing Carter with a second rope moonsault and Cook throwing him with an impressive T-Bone suplex. 2. Malia Hosaka beat Melanie Cruise. Hosaka pinned Cruise with a unique leg-based rollup after Cruise missed an incredible flying legdrop off the top rope. 3. Tony Sly beat Sir Bradley Charles thanks to an assist from Zach Thompson. SBC had Sly up for the Long Kiss Goodnight, only for Zach to jump on the apron and distract the ref and SBC. Sly slipped off SBC, hit him with a lowblow and used his unique double underhook neckbreaker for the pin. 4. Canadian Tuxedo match - Ryan Slade beat A.J. Smooth in a wild brawl. No DQ, allies banned from ringside, one fall in the ring, competitors must wear all denim. Despite Slade's denim bowtie and Smooth's acid-streaked jeans, this was a very intense battle that went all over the arena. Even a hockey stick was used as a weapon. After the ref was knocked down, Tony Sly attempted to interfer on Genesis teammate Smooth's behalf, only for Slade to avoid the attack and Ry-plex Sly. Smooth managed to release Northern Light's Suplex Slade through a table in the corner and Slade still kicked out! Slade finished Smooth off after a Canadian Destroyer. - Slade even had an awesome denim bowtie just for the match. It's unfortunately not picutred, but Smooth had a denim necktie himself. http://www.3xwrestling.com/images/3xw6Spad...rowAG&A.jpg 5. 3XW Tag Team champs American Ground & Air (Ben Sailer & Nate Bash) successfully defended the titles over Scott Spade and Sparrow, pinning Sparrow following a Doomsday Crossbody. Sailer and Bash strangely threatened broadcaster Midnight Guthrie on the mic before the match. 6. Sir Bradley Charles - voted by the fans to be Zach Thompson's opponent tonight - beat Thompson to win the 3XW Pure Wrestling title. A good back-and-forth match, which saw SBC hit the Long Kiss Goodnight for the pin. This is SBC's first title win in 3XW. 7. The Mylan Managament Agency (The Mauler & Ricky Kwong w/Chad Mylan) and The American Bulldogs (Maddog McDowell & Jon West w/Skylar Pierce) battled to a double disqualification after brawling all over the ringside area as the match was just starting. Even Mylan and Pierce went at it during this wild one. 8. Jeremy Wyatt beat Brian Ash for the 3XW Heavyweight title in a very intense brawl after Ash submitted to Wyatt's Crossface. Another match that went all over the arena with vicious strikes by both men throughout the match. At one point, Wyatt chopped Ash so hard that he hit the arena floor and Wyatt himself appeared to have injured his hand. Wyatt won the title for the second time after applying the Crossface, causing Ash to tap out. It's the first time in 6 years of 3XW history that Ash submitted to lose a match.

Really my biggest issue with the whole episode tonight is that in the world of pro wrestling, where the Heavyweight title is the goal everyone is fighting for, the finals of a title tournament for the most important prize in the company was pushed aside for "more important business." - one night after the belt was made to look like the absolute most important thing in the company. Nothing should be presented as more important than the top championship. Makes the tourny, title and eventual winner look totally unimportant, even if the real champion was sitting at the Cubs game tonight. So, I really, really disliked how unimportant the whole tournament came off as a result. They made a championship tournament just look like filler programming before the final segment and Rey Mysterio had to just "aw shucks" his way out of the ring after McMahon played down his huge opportunity. I will say I think how everything is handled 1-2-3 months down the road will really tell the story here. There's still plenty of memorable things that can happen.

This is an awesome interview with CM Punk about recent events from GQ Magazine's website of all places. The only other time I remember them even mentioning pro wrestling is a story a few years back about Matt Striker ditching his teaching job for the WWE, and that may have actually been in Esquire. http://www.gq.com/sports/profiles/201107/c...tling-interview It's amazing the sort of "mainstream" penetration CM Punk's story has received the past few weeks. I can't remember the last time something in pro wrestling not death-related or not involving a "mainstream" celebrity received coverage in big time newspapers and magazines.

This month's Match of the Month is a special treat for fans - last year's Match of the Year, as voted by fans on the 3XW board, available for the first time for free viewing: Voted by 3XW fans as the 2010 Match of the Year, "The Rockstar" Jimmy Rockwell and "The Viking Warrior" Kraig Keesaman meet in a highly-anticipated battle to unify Keesaman's 3XW Pure Wrestling and Rockwell's 3XW Cruiserweight title. Can Rockwell end Keesaman's over 2 year run of not being pinned or submitted? Make sure to stay tuned following the bout for a very special moment. This match took place as part of 3XW's spectacular 5 Year Anniversary event in Des Moines, available at http://www.3XWrestling.com. 3XW Downtown Destruction 3 Results - Des Moines, Iowa - June 24, 2011 RESULTS: For those in attendance - what were your favorite bouts? Genesis made a major impact all night, lots of teamwork and interference in their bouts. Lots of excellent wrestling action throughout the evening. 0. Pre-show bonus match: Knight Wagner pinned Sparrow following a scissors kick. Knight use a lot of fun tactics throughout the bout, including forcing an angry Sparrow to dance. 1. Mark Sterling pinned the MMA's Ricky Kwong w/ Chad Mylan after a spear. Following the bout, Zach Thompson attacked Sterling with the briefcase, only for Sterling to chase him out of the arena. 2. Sir Bradley Charles beat Tony Sly by DQ after Sly hit SBC witha low blow All Genesis members in the building (Todd Countryman, Steve Biley, Brian Ash, Gage Octane, Zach Thompson, Ben Sailer, Nate Bash, AJ Smooth, Tony Sly) came out for a promo. Gage Octane started to crack some jokes, but Brian Ash threatened Octane and lit a fire under the group, saying it was time to get serious and start taking out 3XW's stars. 3. The Mauler w/ Chad Mylan pinned Jon West after a devastating piledriver and then bodyslammed him on the floor following the match. 4. Brian Ash successfully defended the 3XW Heavyweight title over Maddog McDowell in a wild brawl that went all over the arena. Ash pinned McDowell with a corner-assisted Devastator following a distraction by the MMA. 5. Sideburns vs. Sideburns - AJ Smooth pinned Ryan Slade after cracking him with the Canadian flagpole as Tony Sly distracted the referee. Sly held Slade as Smooth shaved off Slade's sideburns following the bout. 6. Zach Thompson successfully defended the 3XW Pure Wrestling title over Jimmy Rockwell by pinfall after spiking Rockwell with a devastating piledriver-style move following Rockwell being distracted by Casanova. 7. Genesis Gauntlet - In a phenomenal effort, Jeremy Wyatt defeated Genesis members Gage Octane, Steve Biley, and Casanova in three straight matches, forcing all three men to submit to the crossface submission. Following the match, all 9 Genesis members surrounded all the exit doors in the building and closed in on the ring. Always a fighter, Wyatt invited the battle, and Genesis laid down a savage assault on the No. 1 contender to the Heavyweight title. With the win, 3XW Commissioner Todd Countryman - the leader of Genesis - is banned from the building at July's 6th Anniversary Event. 8. Tag Team Titles Tournament Finals - American Ground & Air (Ben Sailer & Nate Bash) defeated Darin Corbin & Arik Cannon by pinfall after Sailer hit Cannon with a BenGERMAN Suplex. Former 3XW Senior Official Steve Biley - still a licensed official - counted the fall after referee Jeromy Robb had been assaulted by Todd Countryman when it looked like Corbin and Cannon had the match won. A really wild series of events in the final minutes of the bout, including Corbin moonsaulting off the top rope onto six Genesis members on the arena floor. http://www.3XWrestling.com

Myself, Hollinger and a host of others attended the Smackdown tapings in Des Moines tonight and had a ton of fun. It's been a long time since I saw a WWE event live, at least 5-6 years. Some thoughts: - The crowd was surprisingly low for a TV taping. I know they would get more fans for RAW, but there were still maybe only 4-5,000 in a 16,000 seat arena tops. They even did the half-curtain of the arena. Considering this and the large amount of radio advertising in recent weeks, it makes me happy to even get the 200 average we get at our local 3XW shows just a block away on a super-limited adverting budget. - The only one who truly received a star reaction was Randy Orton, in my opinion. Christian also received a nice reaction, but not Orton's level. Sheamus and Michael Cole (who only appeared on NXT) received many boos. Everyone else - from NXT/Superstars talent to others on Smackdown - didn't get much reaction. Well, Yoshi Tastu was pretty over, but Daniel Bryan didn't receive much more reaction than Johnny Curtis. - NXT did this really cool gauntlet match idea where all 5 remaining contestants and their pros competed in a 5-team gauntlet. Match was legitimately 25-30 minutes. Tyson Kidd was the total workhorse of this, so crisp with everything and then even worked a match with Trent Barretta on Superstars immediately following the bout! One thing I noticed - the "pros" were a hell of a lot more solid than the "rookies", even with the Redemption theme meaning all the rookies have already been on NXT once and the pros, in some cases, not being around much longer than the rookies. I never watch NXT, but the Titus O'Neill/Hornswoggle vs. Chavo Guerrero Jr./Darren Young storyline seems more entertaining than many things on wrestling TV these days. That, and Vladamir Kozlov is a hell of a babyface wrestler, great timing. - The Usos were taking wild bumps, clearly trying to make an impression. - Poor Sin Cara...they let him make the save for Daniel Bryan against a double team from Cody Rhodes and Ted Dibiase (Danielson had just wrestled Dibiase), so Cara hits the ring, only for Rhodes to botch taking Cara's first move and Ted awkwardly handled the second. I'd say this one was definitely not on Cara either. - Christian and Mark Henry had a good match and Randy Orton and Sheamus had a really good match with an unusual finish, considering the face-hell dynamics - essentially Sheamus clearly had the title won, but Christian as guest referee screwed him over by not finishing the count of 3 (Sheamus ran into him directly before the finish, so Christian sold the shoulder). - Johnny Curtis cut this awkward promo basically explaining that he earned a Tag Title shot with his former partner R-Truth due to winning last season's NXT, but wasn't going to get it. He then spilled milk over his head to indicate the "crying over spilled milk" cliche. It was really strange and maybe I just didn't get it. Crowd was way confused. - I was thrilled to see one of our local Iowa wrestlers, A.J. Smooth, be one of Cody Rhodes' bag handlers during a Rhodes promo.
