  1. Too early for sure but really effective and felt like the bear bones version of the production WWF would venture into within the Undertaker storyline in the years to come. Ross sold the aura of the moment well when he returned to commentary.
  2. First things first, Shawns temper tantrum was uncalled for and a moment of unprofessionalism when he yells at Vader and shoves the camera man when they go to the outside. On the other hand, it is legitimately 20 seconds in a 20 minute segment and because Shawn is who he is, it has been manufactured and blown way out of proportion in regards to this match. I haven't watched this match in years and yet remembered it as the match where Vader got yelled out. That is a shame as the match surrounding all of this is excellent. Stiff strikes and the babyface champion not backing down leading to him getting pulverized by some brutal offense only to mount a combat using his advantage (speed) and to capitalize when the heel gets greedy. It is a perfect WWF storyline. The booking is a lot to take in and it felt to me like we had a early 1980's MSG heel challenger run in one night where each of the finishes would have signified the end of the match an era before. Instead, I do think Vader looks strong getting two legit victories, getting a visual pin on the power bomb before the second referee comes in, and kicking out of Sweet Chin Music. Again, it feels like because of the disappointment that Vader became in the WWF, this match is lumped in with that discussion. Box office aside, the in ring portion of this was great and this way surpassed my expectations. ****
  3. This match was a blast to watch with LIger mixing in well and clowning it up to tremendous results. I like how Kaeintai have really gelled as a team and feel like a huge unit that is to be reckoned with and doesn't have any glaring flaws. ***3/4
  4. Pretty awesome spectacle of a match with the boiler room section being intense with some good weapon shots, the brawl to the ring being more organic than most of those with the wrestlers cheering them on and then the emotional turn of Paul Bearer. Mick is willing to go to extremes to bump and the Undertaker looks more vulnerable here than at any point in his WWF career up to this point. ***1/2
  5. Maybe the best Konnan has looked to me throughout the 1990's. He mixed in some good action here and complimented the rudo team of Juvy and Estrada well. Rey's dives looked great as well. I don't think this had anything particularly memorable but it was a very entertaining match that I was glad was sandwiched in amongst everything else worldwide. ***1/2
  6. This is going to be a month where I really just have to ignore the crowd for the most part and concentrate on the action as this was awesome inside the ring with tons of spots, strikes, and avoidance from Tenryu's part. I thought he was really effective putting over the danger of Sano in particular. That slap exchange half way through the match was sick followed by a flush kick right to Tenryu. Finish stretch was nice with Tenryu firing back and putting Sano away with a powerbomb which was nice to see after the multiple powerbomb kickouts on the G-1. ***1/2
  7. They made this match feel important on commentary but it is too rushed and a placeholder for the feud overall. I am interested to see when they could have done Flair vs. Hogan on a major PPV but I think if Hogan had more weeks of heel build up to get the fans conditioned to boo him and Flair was seen as the flagbearer for WCW, it could have been really effective.
  8. Enjoyed this but it does show the early stages of the program as a whole as they were still trying to hammer out the amount of edge and insider nature of each of the promos in the NWO.
  9. I liked this a good deal with the callback spots and Shawn trying to avoid them. Good athleticism mixed in and a fun ending that set up SummerSlam well. The main event hasn't been a bad program at all and Vader has gotten over on HBK a good bit up to this point.
  10. Bret seems contempt hanging out on ships and doing interviews. Perfect as the investigative reporter to catch up with Hitman was an odd choice but I guess Kevin Kelly was staring at Ahmed's junk in his bathrobe.
  11. I'm glad Ahmed dressed for this sit down interview. The first of a bevy of injuries to completely derail his career.
  12. Action at the end looked fun although the crowd sucks with this too. The Booty Man stuff I had forgotten about and was a good bit of continuity and I like how things are building to the Clash.
  13. Good finish and I liked the announcers not being totally clueless that something may be awry. The domination of the NWO continues
  14. What an awesome moment with Flair describing perfectly the contrast between him and Hogan. I know it was only 2 years removed from their last feud but I do feel like this could have certainly headlined a big PPV.
  15. JWP continues to be my joshi jam although again the crowd let me down here. Good back and forth action and Kansai looked dominant but also gave Ozaki some openings throughout the match. Emotional ending with Ozaki being defeated. Really good stuff. ***1/ 2
  16. Pretty beautiful pro wrestling match showing the old guard rising up one more time against the king of the G-1. Chono was dominant on top and really put Choshu against the odds. Fujinami slapping him around was a great moment and the eruption at the submission on the scorpion was highly rewarding. The last two matches really made the G-1 feel great overall. ***3/4
  17. Finally a match that really delivered for me on this disc compared to other commentators. Really hot action moving into purposeful mat work. Chono was great playing some good heel aspects without going overboard. Everything from the first STF on was highly dramatic. Something about these two together always seems to work and they bring out the best of each other. Another roll up finish which has been a thread throughout this tournament. ****
  18. I liked this better than Muto vs. Kojima but I am starting to realize that I may be lower on this G-1 as a whole than everyone else. Upsets are a lot of fun and a big tournament is an avenue to do them, but Kojima/Tenzan/Koshinaka and Muto/Chono at points just don't do it for me. I wonder if Hashimoto had any surprising matches as looking at the brackets he was in a weak field. Anyway, my favorite moment of this was the fact that the small package was able to obtain the victory as a good call back to the nearfall in the Muto/Koshinaka match. Kojima celebrates the upset well. ***
  19. Fuck this crowd. A great contrast to the Koshinaka vs. Muto match earlier that had a great crowd but I thought was just spots being repeated. This had a lot of bombs but I thought enough selling, reversals, and payback spots to improve the match greatly. The crowd was mostly mundane until the overtime when they really get angry but I enjoyed every minute of this and really think it deserves better. In some ways, I commend Benoit and Malenko for not refusing to conform and still doing their stuff in front of this crowd. ****
  20. I hated this. I understand the place of a ironic unfunny group that thinks they are funny but 3 Count did it much better and with more believably to me. Sandman gets to come out to the big pop and cane everyone and then we get more family drama with him and Raven.
  21. This was a beautiful segment with the Horseman being vicious and the other individuals staying guard outside because Booty Man is Hogan's friend. We then get some great promos by Flair and Arn with Arn's especially being spine tingling. WCW is firing on all cylinders right now. *1/2
  22. The hijack at the end was a nice touch of WCW not going to put up with the nonsense of the NWO.
  23. This gave some humility to Shawn. He admits Vader got the best of him but vows revenge at SummerSlam. He actually talks about Bret in a semi-convincing way saying he wants him to come back to WWF. I thought this was very effective.
  24. Agree that the stuff up to the fracture was very exhibitionish. They seemed to be building to the dives but it felt very maligned and just a sequence of spots. Disappointing since I have been overall a fan of these two going through the 90's and this was a huge stage with the J Crown on the line. The visual of Sasuke with the belts remains awesome. **1/2
  25. This may be my bias against both guys but this didn't do a lot for me at all and I thought the powerbomb, butt butt, dragon screw series felt very unimaginative in the end stretch. The opening junior wrestling was also uninspiring. The crowd went nuts and I can see how this match has fans, but it left me very flat. **1/2
