This really feels like the genesis of what will be one of the better feuds of the next decade. Short but violent. It does appear we had some clipping in here. They provided a nice contrast of the wrestling and submission ability of Ishikawa vs. the strikes of Ikeda.

Just got Jumbo/Tenryu vs. Choshu/Yatsu from 1/28/86 for the first time in four years and my lord what a great match that is. Jumbo bloodied up is so awesome and it feels like when Tenryu ascends to become a peer at the adult table.

Interesting thoughts on that as I am finishing up with most years of the 90's and I think at this point it is only eclipsed by the 1980's as far as an overall decade I enjoy in wrestling history.

[1993-08-13-SMW-Hot August Night in Mo-Town] Tracy Smothers vs Brian Lee
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1993
Smothers is really showing me something this year regardless of where thoughts on the flag stand which looks even more ridiculous given recent events. Fytch and Lee have really turned into an act that I find entertaining and it makes me sort of feel like Lee really got lost in the shuffle and lost his passion overall. A good match with good heat that sets up the rematch the next night. ***1/4 -
[1993-08-13-AAA-Sin Limite] El Hijo del Santo vs Heavy Metal
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1993
Will be the high vote here as I thought this was a good entry into this feud even if I still had it below the May match. I think the fact that Santo is able to mix in great wrestling, submission, and beautiful dives together is what made it so effective overall. I also did like some of the AAA crackpot booking here with the restart and stalls within the match. Very good effort and I look forward to more between the two. ***3/4 -
[1993-08-13-UWFi-Fight of Champions] Vader vs Kazuo Yamazaki
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1993
What a show. Yamzaki has been my man in 1996 currently so it was great to see him here throw his all at Vader and look effective but also make Vader look like a complete beast in the fact that he takes all of that offense and fends it off to gain the victory in just over 6 minutes. -
[1993-08-13-UWFi-Fight of Champions] Gene Lydick vs Yoshihiro Takayama
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1993
Really fun match filled to the brim with action in 10 minutes. Takayama looked good and smooth with his strikes and Lydick has had some surprising performances throughout the years. Well done shootstyle action. ***1/2 -
Great match with a clear focus and strategy for both competitors. One thing I liked about this match was that Saito's positioning was clear but she maximized that without Hokuto looking week. I also thought this went the correct amount of time for the story that was progressed overall. Impressive action. ****

[1993-08-09-WWF-Raw] Contract Signing: Lex Luger and Yokozuna
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1993
My lord that building they ran this in. Props to Lex for that American Flag tag. Luger looked good and poised here and gets a nice reaction. Heenan glee at Cornette being Yoko's spokesperson was awesome. This build continues to be very solid. -
Still enjoying this and Luger's role as an upstart babyface defending America. This really has felt like an angle that wouldn't take place at any other point in wrestling history past this one.

[1993-08-13-UWFi-Fight of Champions] Yoji Anjo vs Naoki Sano
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1993
I was eagerly anticipating this one and it didn't disappoint. First Anjo and Sano start off with an intense segment. Everything here is a struggle and there is a ferocious pace to what all is going on. Anjo clapping like a prick to Sano's attempts was amazing heeling on his part. Anjo then flips him up like a pretzel and we again get another restart. Sano taking control and uses his whole body weight to maintain control capped by him driving his elbow into the side of Anjo's face. This chess match continues with good counters, tight mat work with lots of wrenching, and powerful throws when necessary. Anjo keeps using those knees and strikes to effectiveness. Sano giving Anjo a taste of his own medicine with kicks as Anjo applies another hurty, intricate submission was brilliant. Release German has Anjo really winded but he still is able to lock on an STF. Sano escapes this and finally catches Anjo in one thing he can not escape and Anjo is forced to tap. A top 5 shootstyle match of the 90's and great stuff overall. ****3/4- 10 replies

[1993-08-09-USWA-Mid-South Coliseum] Jerry Lawler vs Mr Perfect
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1993
Beautiful production to this match with a nice tight shot and Corey narrating. Perfect goes after the leg with great aggression and it really maximizes the storyline of the match overall. This feels like a 1987 heel AWA Hennig performance with Lawler being the best possible Mitch Snow. Great comeback and Perfect takes his SUmmerSlam 1991 bumps. Schmozz finish kind of derails the fun basic but brutal feeling of this but the crowd was hot and Vampire Warrior mixed in was effective. I loved the guy and the cowboy hat and woman fighting over the chain that Lawler throws into the crowd. This made me want to see way more MSC stuff from the 1990's. ***1/2 -
[1996-08-04-NJPW-G1 Climax] Shinya Hashimoto vs Hiroyoshi Tenzan
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1996
Shocking upset for me too but Hashimoto really milked that knee injury so he made everything believable. I can see people that dig old man Tenzan now getting into this one but like nowadays I found his offense to be too methodical to raise this match above the good level even though Hash was a pro as usual getting him over. ***- 8 replies

Guess I am the high vote here as I enjoyed the table setting but I really think Samurai is one of the more engaging workers I have found on the yearbooks. Nothing about his look is as flashy as almost anyone else within the company, and yet he remains an engaging figure based on his mat work and overall psychology. The last five minutes were full of more high impact bumps and nearfalls to get the crowd going. Not a classic by any means, but a really good juniors match that was unfortunate to come right after a classic. ***1/2

[1996-08-05-NJPW-J*Crown] Ultimo Dragon vs Shinjiro Otani
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1996
Ohtani is amazing. I can't get over how much I get invested in him and feel like he doesn't ever become whiny or annoying even though he toes the line so well. I don't get that vibe with crying Kobashi as much as others and I am extremely high on Kenta, but Ohtani's facials are even a level above. You just can't believe that he keeps being unable to get over that hump and win that one marquee match. Maybe it is my Atlanta sports fandom talking but it is such a rewarding experience seeing his growth transpire in the ring. Ultimo was solid here and remained the stoic but flashy offensive worker he needed to be in this match. This is definitely on the short list of junior matches of the 1990's. ****3/4- 13 replies

[1996-08-03-ECW-The Doctor Is In] Sabu vs Rob Van Dam (Stretcher)
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1996
Yeah, this is the only one I would call good just for the trainwreck aspect of it all and the fact that it felt more focused than the stuff that came before it. There were plenty of brutal bumps and less slop while I watched it. I am glad this series is over. ***- 11 replies

[1996-08-03-ECW-The Doctor Is In] Chris Jericho vs 2 Cold Scorpio
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1996
I liked this match a lot but it showed me how good Benoit is at times compared to someone like Jericho. Scorpio played his role here well as he did at SuperBrawl III but Benoit was able to create a much more focused and restrained atmosphere around him whereas here with Jericho, things did tend to drift into indy spotfest territory a little too much and they lost steams as the match progressed. The matches went close to the same amount of time which makes it an apt comparison in my opinion. That isn't to take away from this match which was really good, but it was something I thought about while watching. ***1/2- 6 replies

Hogan vs. Giant hasn't been a greatly effective main event to be honest as far as calling him out but the NWO Still feels so fresh and unique that it still works.

[1996-08-03-USWA-TV] Tommy Rich and Doug Gilbert split
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1996
A dingy arena that is a long ways away from the Mid South sell out days. Gilbert instead of taking the lashes has enough and goes after Rich. Christopher and Jarrett get involved and we have a melee and a Gilbert face turn it seems. -
That is true Pete that I could see myself just happening to be travelling by the studios even if I was a casual fan because who the hell knows what you will see. Jaime gives a great pissed off rant against Wolfie and is ready to set his possessions on fire until we get a great brawl.

[1996-08-03-NJPW-G1 Climax] Kazuo Yamazaki vs Shiro Koshinaka
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1996
Yamazaki continues to be the hit of the tournament so far to me and is awesome stalking his opponent and pulling out nasty arm submissions from anywhere that look like they can end the match at any point. Koshinaka was actively bad here not focusing on the hand fast enough and using his ass based offense. Koshinaka in general is someone I haven't had much use for in the 90's and this really felt like a match were he prevented it from being good. **1/2- 6 replies

[1996-08-02-ECW-Plymouth Meeting, PA] Chris Jericho vs Sabu
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1996
Some matches hold up over time and some don't. ECW mostly doesn't and this is the biggest example in a while. Whereas the previous match had some less than stellar execution that felt like both men giving it their all. This match those sloppy spots that felt like competitors being overly ambitious. That may be a double standard but it is the way I feel and the live reaction bears that out. At the end of this match you could almost hear a sigh that it was finally over. Joey Styles yelling OH MY GOD on DDT's through the table feels so hollow. With everything else being amazing on this disc so far, this really felt out of place and drug things to a big halt. *1/2
