This wasn't bad but did feel like a cluster for most of the time. Tajiri did at least get some offense in but Taz is now fending off Corino, choking out victory, and Tajiri as well. **1/2

What a scathing promo. Can't wait to hear STeven get to this when the Super Extreme Vault gets there. The match was a load of fun as this is turning into my favorite garbage feud. I still have some issues at times with Dudley's not showing ass enough and that was really scary to Balls on the botch. OVerall, enjoyable stuff. ***1/4

[1993-09-11-SMW-TV] Rock & Roll Express vs Bruise Brothers

Gaining a soft spot for the Harris Brothers as they looked good here. Some more schmozz in the ending here to keep the RNR occupied for the moment.- 7 replies

[1993-09-11-SMW-TV] Interview: Jim Cornette / Interview: Terry Funk
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in September 1993
I thought Del Ray was Funk for a minute. Cornette does another great promo and I am impressed that after the August blow off matches, it looked like the feud had peaked but on the power of Cornette, it has raged on. This Funk promo had some aesthetic stuff that again took me out of it, but it was crazy Terry at his best and really did make him look like a menace for the promotion.- 7 replies

Stan is the man and he has done a better job hyping ECW than anyone else we have seen on these segments. Hansen in the US is admittedly maybe a low point for him at times career wise but he still was really effective in a variety of areas and presented himself as a star.

[1993-09-05-UWFi] Yoshihiro Takayama vs Hiromitsu Kanehara
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in September 1993
Another good match for early Takayama. I liked that they made Kanehara look real credible here and they had some wicked exchanges. These UWFi matches featuring Takayama don't have the execution or technical proficiency of some of the best RINGS stuff but they are highly entertaining and almost feel like grindhouse style movie fight scenes.- 6 replies

[1993-09-04-USWA-TV] Interview: Jerry Lawler / Interview: Vince McMahon
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in September 1993
Glad to see this continuing and Lawler is able to spin the web that he beat Hart twice in a row which is technically true. The Vince promo is again glorious and you can see Vince letting loose and throwing in that southern accent and disdain with great authority now. -
The aftermath is really poor here. All Luger really had to say was that he was glad to hammer Yoko but the job wouldn't be done until he had the belt so therefore in his eyes he failed to an extent and he is vowing he wont fail again if given the opportunity. Instead we get a unrealistic spin that just hurts Luger in all facets.

[1993-09-03-AJPW-Summer Action Series II] Mitsuharu Misawa vs Steve Williams
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in September 1993
Really enjoyed this one given the context. Doc had to look strong given that a. Gordy had OD'd and the writing was on the wall b. Hansen was supposed to be winding down. No one gave Doc a chance I assume in this match but they do a good job of establishing him early on. Misawa had been the man for a while now and really established himself lately. Here, he is reeling a bit and looks like he can't quite figure out Doc and must avoid the Backdrop Driver. Misawa does however have old reliable and that is the elbow which he uses to great effect throughout this match peppering it in and cutting Doc off time and time again. I agree with JDW that the BDD was hit in a way that didn't emphasize the full impact and make it become the death move it can be. One of those great matches that may not be top 10 for All Japan for the year which is more an indication of how great their year was overall than a reflection of the flaws of the match. ****- 17 replies

DiBiase showing up in All Japan was quick turnaround. Still weird to see him willing relevant stuff here as him and Hansen gain the tag straps. The action looked good down the stretch and I know the consensus is that Ted at this point couldn't hang with these guys which is probably true to an extent, but it would be fun to view at some point and flesh out for myself.

I am so ready for this ECW split to be done and us to be rid of Gilbert in ECW. This is awful timing for someone I have really enjoyed as this whole era has left a black mark on Gilbert's overall career for me and I still contend it is the most unbearable stuff in US wrestling in 1993.

Garetta will be happy to know the spit is back when he gets to this segment. Good stuff from Hansen but man it is hard to believe this was on ECW tv in August 1993.

[1993-08-31-AJPW-Summer Action Series II] Steve Williams vs Kenta Kobashi
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1993
Two jocks that are focused on being the ultimate guy in the locker room. I have to be weary of describing matches like this giving that something like Kandori vs. Hokuto also happened this year and that is a match where gender is replaced by hate, but there is a level of testosterone in this match that I think prevails. Both guys are going to the upmost extremes of their physical limitations to prove they are the best. The only thing at the end with the backdrop driver and the kick out irked me a bit but overall this is an exasperating roller coaster match that is another notch for Kobashi's tremendous year and a great stepping stone for Doc heading into his TC challenge of Misawa. ****1/2- 15 replies

I like this video and I always thought it was cool turn around to have clips of the match with Yoko in there. Anyway, I think Luger should have ultimately gotten the belt and then Yoko could have been the main foil until someone like Shawn was ready to take on that role.
-
Cornette's outfit is awesome here. This does have great heat and I am conflicted as to what to do. i think this was the old school Titan booking philosophy colliding with the changing of the times. Looking at the history of the promotion, almost assuredly Luger would have went over here whether he was ready or not. However, giving the nature of the surrounding stuff with the decline in popularity, the incoming litigation, and the prospect of what Yoko could become created a situation where they were locked into having to make a difficult choice. Instead they decide to compromise and end up costing Luger his overall career. I don't know whether his ridiculous cheering was his encouragement or the company but Im holding a lot of the company responsible for the confetti, wrestlers coming out, and Vince screaming on commentary. We just saw a cleverly done cop out finish so that makes this all the more sour when watching. This show was solid all around but it ends with a thud here.

Wrestling theater at its best. King is able to go out and do his thing and the crowd eats it up. The dynamic is superb and incredible seeing the contrast to what we all just witnessed in the MSC the night before. Heenan provides probably his last true highlight on WWF commentary giving a great performance sticking up for Lawler and the humility he displayed to even arrive at the building. The Doink vs. Hart stuff was well done and is a nice bookend to the Doink character in 1993 that could have done more with, but I am happy with what we received based on the occupational gimmick mindset that WWF was becoming at this time. The Lawler vs. Bret stuff really heats up and Lawler's tactics do have a sense of desperation to them that does rise it above his normal schtick. I thought the finish was also really well done and extended the feud displaying the strengths of both competitors. A highlight for the entire year. ****1/2

[1993-08-30-WWF-Summerslam] Shawn Michaels vs Mr Perfect
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1993
An interesting match as seeing the house show between these two made me have no expectations at all. This was an improvement of that chicken shit lazy performance but both guys still seem unwilling of advancing and trying new things to help the match reach that second gear. Michaels has been an interesting performer to watch in 93 and 96 as I am consistently enjoying his performances in 96 more than I ever have before while at the same time being let down by his 93 stuff. The tools are all there, he just decided when to turn them on or off. I will see what 92 and 95 holds, but I almost think you can make a case that of what I have seen so far, 93 has been his most disappointing year in ring wise since his debut. **3/4- 12 replies

[1993-08-30-WWF-Summerslam] Rick & Scott Steiner vs Heavenly Bodies
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1993
Really fun sprint that gets the crowd going and makes the Steiners look incredible and the machines they could be. The Bodies also look effective here as they turn things around and provide some really good offense. This mixed in with a hot crowd makes it a really good showcase for both teams and the kind of match that can flesh out a show and make it memorable. ***1/4 -
[1993-08-29-USWA-Mid-South Coliseum] Bret Hart vs Jerry Lawler (Cage)
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1993
Pretty awesome match from the clips. Hart embraces his role head on and is a great heel stalking back as Lawler moves forward. The other thing I enjoyed about this was everyone trying to scale the cage with Hart and Jarrett. I didn't even mind Giant Gonzales coming in although that is a pretty severe let down from the Hart vs. Lawler stuff we have seen lately. Almost assuredly this would have been in my top 100 matches for the year if it was complete. -
[1993-08-28-WCW-Saturday Night] Flair for the Gold: Rick Rude
soup23 replied to Loss's topic in August 1993
I actually liked the way this set up as Rude was the perfect foil to out style and profile Flair. It is too bad that Rude was on his way down as far as in ring as the buildup just a year and half earlier could have made this a classic feud.- 9 replies

Really good build up here. We first have a hilarious Cornette promo that really sets the stage for the ARmstrong match and I loved the Bodies with the stuffed animals to try to cheer him up. The Funk promo was weird. It wasn't bad per say but the lightning and bandana he was wearing took me out of it a bit.
