Suggestions for tag team tournament entries

Recommended Posts

Loss and I talked about a tag team tournament to see who is the best tag team. Regardless of who is listed, I do think we should wait until Loss comes back from vacation to start the tournament.

I have a few questions I want to throw out....

Who should be in the tournament?

Should we limit the promotions the tag-teams wrestled in?

Should we be all-inclusive and allow foreign tag teams (ie Kawada & Taue, Kojima & Tenzan) as well?

Should we have a certain cut-off date so we don't nclude tag teams most of us have probably never seen?

If you have any other suggestions, ideas, or comments, feel free to post them.

Guest Some Guy

I'd do WWF from 85-2005, like the last one.

Teams (I'm going to list all that I can think of off the top of my head before I lose patience with it):

British Bulldogs

Dream Team

Hart Fondation

Shiek and Volkoff

US Express

Killer Bees

Strike Force

Demolition

Powers of Pain

Bushwhackers

Mega Powers (this is iffy)

Rockers

Brainbusters

Rougeau Brothers

Rhythm and Blues

Nasty Boys

LOD

Natural Disasters

Money Inc.

Orient Express

Power and Glory

Studd and Bundy

Steiner Brothers

Head Shrinkers

Smoking Gunns

Yoko and Owen

Heavenly Bodies

Bodydonnas

Godwins

Headbangers

Furnas and LaFon

New Blackjacks

Owen and Bulldog

New Age Outlaws

Rock n Sock Connection

APO

Hardy Boyz

Edge and Chritian

Dudley Boyz

Too Cool

X-Pac and Road Dogg

Billy and Chuck

La Resistance

That's enough for now.

I'd also add the following:

Owen & Davey Boy

Furnas & LaFon

Benoit & Jericho

Austin & HHH

Undertaker & Kane

Ric Flair & Batista

Edge & Rey Misterio Jr

Los Guerreros

Booker T & Goldust

Chris Jericho & Christian

Shawn Michaels & Diesel

Chris Benoit & Kurt Angle

Chris Benoit & Edge

Undertaker & Kane

Mankind & Kane

Rob Van Dam & Kane

And more I'm sure I can think of later.

Eh, the way I see it, if your team wasn't good enough to have a tag team name, you shouldn't be in the tag team tournament. I know I'm not going to vote Owen & Davey over anyone like The Bushwhackers or The Legion of Doom.

I strongly disagree with that. Owen and Davey Boy had far better matches as a team than the Bushwhackers or LOD did in the company in the time frame. There were plenty of long-term tag teams that didn't have team names that were still quite good. Not every team I mentioned here was long-term, but they all had memorable runs.

I really don't want to just limit this to just WWF tag teams. For key parts of its history, WWF has neglected its tag team division and many of those teams on the list shouldn't even be u for consideration.

So, for argument sake, here is a list of possible NWA/WCW tag teams...

Sheepherders

Fantastics

Fabulous Ones

Midnight Express

Rock N Roll Express

Road Warriors

The Koloffs

Tully and Arn

Freebirds

Luger and Sting

Varsity Club

Steiners

Harlem Heat

Benoit and Malenko

Outsiders

Raven and Kanyon

Hennig and Windham

Nasty Boys

Southern Boys

Windham & Rhodes

Dangerous Alliance

Hollywood Blondes

Meng and Barbarian

Three Count

O'Hare and Palumbo

Bagwell and Luger :P

Mysterio and Kidman

Ole and Arn Anderson

Terry Gordy and Steve Williams

Doom

Samoan Swat Team

Pillman and Zenk

The Mulkey Bros ( !!! )

Steamboat & Douglas

While we're at it, what happened to Los Conquistadores? They had a great comeback in 2000 and defeated the Hardyz for the tag titles, but that biased commissioner Mick Foley ordered a loss EDGE AND CHRISTIAN had to the Hardy Boyz the following night to be a way to give the Hardyz their titles back. Los Conquistadores were obviously so upset by this miscarriage of justice that they completely left wrestling.

Funny. I just watched Owen/DBS vs. Austin/HBK from RAW in 1997 last night, and it blows away anything those other two teams did in the promotion.

Los Conquistadors probably should've received more attention as far as the Tag Team of the Year award goes, but sadly, the rubes were sucked in by the garbage style of a team like the Dudleys. It's really sad, since Los Conquistadors wrestled a far more sophisticated style and the WWF ran more on the Dudleys and Hardys. Look where it got them too, as the tag division (both of them) is pretty dead right now, and that style of wrestling really hurt them in the long run.

What really disappoints me is how that team disappeared. If you're going to break up the team or get rid of them, then do something with those guys in singles competition. Personally, I don't know about you, but Uno had the look of at least an upper-midcarder, Intercontinental champ worker. Dos probably needed a little more seasoning, and an ability to work the crowd more, but you can't argue with his in-ring work as a whole. Then again, due to these guys ability to work such a unique style, they probably got blacklisted for not being able to work "WWF Style" (whatever the fuck that is...).

The biggest argument against using Japanese teams is that most people here have probably never seen the best teams wrestle enough to make an informed opinion. I could easily make the argument that Kawada & Taue are the best tag team ever (certainly in the best two tag matches ever) but if someone has never seen them, I would hate to see that person vote for a team like the Hollywood Bloondes or Legion of Doom over them when those American teams are so far below the totem pole in comparison.

I'd skip the Japanese teams, uness you want me to vote for BBB and Vader everytime because they are the only team I've seen in more than one match.
