Steven Regal vs. Chris Benoit – WCW Handheld 5/8/93

Can I just point out that his ring name at this point was STEVE Regal, not Steven.

Until he started the Lord gimmick, he was always Steve except for:

1) his first two ITV matches for Joint Promotions in late 1986 as Roy Regal

2) appearances on S4C's Welsh language wrestling show Reslo as Steve Jones

3) a one off appearance as masked heel Hellraiser on Eurosport New Catch, filmed in France.

Going through New Japan'95 and came across 09.23 Lord Steven Regal vs. Wild Pegasus (NJPW G1 Climax Special 1995) - This was tremendous. The first part was Regal's style. This was flawless and could have been done in NJ or AJ 1975-80. Eventually Benoit found and opening and it became his high octane style. Neither man was completely out of their element though. Eventually Regal was bleeding from his ear. This elevated the perception of true violence. The finish seemed imperfect at first but then made sense to me and was fitting given what had proceeded it. Near classic match and every bit as good as I had hoped for!

It's been awhile since I saw their Nitro matches but this New Japan match seemed like the template for those. Definitely recommend this one.

These are from Nitro. They started limiting him as they went in 1997 but I think these still in his style with little compromise for the Nitro format or style.

vs Chris Benoit (01/01/96) - Very good aggressive match. Looked like more potatoes than Idaho. Regal got dumped on the German suplex, it was great! Unique finish too.

vs Eddie Guerrero (01/08/96) - Technical but very punishing match. That is to say Regal punished Eddie - European uppercuts, knee lifts, palm strikes and an arm trap dragon sleeper to name few. Eddie doesn't quit. Despite Regal's size he took the head scissor moves and the like very well. This was a really good bout.

vs Dean Malenko (08/19/96) - Great under 10 minute technical wizard duel. I think this match was the best of the 3 Cruiserweight musketeer matches because they wrestled a faster pace. But speed isn't everything so perhaps it was the story of them both being evenly matched. Regal had size and strikes but Malenko was had a slight advantage from a technical standpoint. Iirc I'd maybe put this as a top 5 Malenko on Nitro match.
