jdw
Your list tells the tale on where AJPW's decline in the ring hits home. From 1990-97 Top 10: 3-3-3-2-3-3-3-1 Top 20: 3-6-4-7-4-8-5-1 Top 40: 7-8-7-14-5-11-13-2 Just the one match in the Top 20, and a second in the Top 40. The decline hit quick after 12/06/96 and 01/20/97. Odd thinking how long the prior stretches lasted at a high end: 5/90 - 10/92: Jumbo & Co vs Misawa & Co 5/93 - 12/95: Four Corners 5/96 - rest of Pre-Split AJPW: Kobashi & Jun Elevate There are highly rated matches still to come, though some of them are like the highly rated matches (at the time) that didn't do so well here: probably not going to look as great now. But... While Jumbo & Co vs Misawa & Co peaked early, the feud still kicked out #7 & #13 in 1992 (with two other AJPW matches finishing Top 20). Four Corners feud matches went #1-2-11-15-16-17-22 in it's last year. Kobashi & Jun elevating in 1996 was one of the highest things you've liked in this run: #1-4-8-14-18-21-25-27-30, another at #37... which is a ton since it was just the last 5 series of the year for the promotion. But it hits the wall in 1997 with #1-27 for the two Misawa-Kobashi Triple Crown matches. The second year of Jun's elevation was flat, and it would get worse in 1998 when "moving away from Misawa" meant being Kobashi's #2 rather than forming his own group. It will really be interesting to see what you think of the rest of the decade. There's the sense that if this was a movie or novel and you could cut an "early ending" that 01/20/97 would be it: * Jun stepped up and showed promise * Kawada & Taue finally overcame 3 years of RWTL failure * Kobashi has finally won the TC, beating Taue, retaining over Hansen, and able to withstand Kawada for an hour * Misawa proves that even while pushed, he's still The Man And close the book. The "writers" weren't able to top that, and instead the novel was increasingly sad and depressing.
jdw
Other thing to look towards in 1998: Seems very unlikely that either the 6/98 Kawada-Kobashi or 10/98 Misawa-Kobashi will be #1, regardless of their old ratings. That will close AJPW's run of five straight #1's. What match, wrestlers and promotion will step up to grab #1?

jdw
Could be. Rings did well on Loss' list in 1997. I'm not sure when Yoshida's strong Arsion run starts... suspect Loss will like that.

rzombie1988
I've got to know what made you guys pick Misawa/Kobashi as the top match for the year. This is what I wrote on it: Mitsuharu Misawa beat Kenta Kobashi at 42:05 with a running forearm smash. I honestly didn't like this. Neither guy knew whether they wanted to do a technical match or an AJPW head dropping bonanza, so they just combined the two. They match was most focused on Kobashi working Misawa's arm before it became the usual head drop fest. Kobashi worked it for the entire middle portion of the match but the arm work ended up meaning nothing anyway as Misawa ended up winning with the same injured arm, like I knew he would. The kicking out of the Tiger Driver '91 infuriated me. Following it up with Kobashi getting up from a dragon suplex didn't help matters either. I honestly was starting to think that a Tiger Driver off the building wouldn't have mattered at that point.I also didn't like the length of this match. It went 42 minutes and could have used about 10 minutes or so less. These two didn't need the extra time and all the extra time did was allow things to escalate more than they needed to. It felt like it could have went all night with the way things were going.I'm going to hold off a rating on this one. I used to think it was a great match back in the day but this viewing totally soured me on it. There were some good things and the story was good up until the end, but they just had to blow it. At least the crowd was hot and ate all of it up, while I was here throwing it up. Zenjo
1997 was the last great year of an era. It was such fun rediscovering and uncovering so many fantastic matches. For me it's also a special year because it's when I became a wrestling fan once again. I can hardly say that I haven't looked back since! In terms of the elite matches 1997 was spectacular. It has a top 5 to stand comparison with any other year in history imo. The overall depth is a bit down on the preceding years, but still strong. 1998 would be a big drop. My list this year isn't dominated by any one promotion. The number 1 company was CMLL, who were enjoying a second golden period in 96-97 after the turn of the 90's boom. For the second time Casas vs Santo provides my MOTY, edging out the Misawa vs Kobashi classic by a narrow margin. Zen Nihon was more inconsistent than previously, but still had the Four Corners in their primes. Rings had an impressive year in sharp contrast to other shoot style organisations. The WWF enjoyed its best year of the 90's. Both in terms of match output and sports entertainment. JWP had a great year and was my #1 Joshi promotion. AJW may have ended '97 in terrible shape, but the output was almost as good as '96. WCW, GAEA, MPro and LLPW provided their share of good times along with others. The biggest disappointment was something that I haven't seen discussed before. New Japan. I can hardly believe how little NJ there is on my list. It's way down on any of the other 8 years I've done. Footage may be an issue, but it was a bad time for the heavyweight division in particular. I've now completed 90% of the 90's. So bring on 1995.
