thebrainfollower Posted April 28, 2014 Report Posted April 28, 2014 So what would everyone's picks be for the matches where famed JCP referee Tommy Young contributed the most? I have a friend who's getting a lot of indy bookings as a ref and I want to show him Tommy's best stuff. I can come up with the consensus best matches Tommy refereed but I'm more looking for his standout performances.
BillThompson Posted April 28, 2014 Report Posted April 28, 2014 I'm not sure if I can provide any examples of him being great in a match, because his ability to blend into a match was part of his greatness. That's what I most took away from Young; though he could bump great and sell great, he almost always made everything he did as a ref seem organic or right within the contest of the match.
Lee Casebolt Posted April 28, 2014 Report Posted April 28, 2014 My favorite memory of Young is him sliding out of the ring to get in a position where he could actually see a wrestler's shoulders before counting a pin. I am 90% certain this was in the '89 Flair/Steamboat series, though I couldn't tell you which one.
Timbo Slice Posted April 28, 2014 Report Posted April 28, 2014 That was Flair/Funk at GAB '89. Great spot. I think Tommy did that on a regular basis.
PhilTLL Posted May 2, 2014 Report Posted May 2, 2014 Luger/Steamboat, GAB 1989. Luger takes issue with the count speed and shows Tommy how he wants it. So of course Tommy counts the next surprise Steamboat roll up super fast, and Luger is piiiissed.
