JaymeFuture
The SCG Court Cases return this week for the Trial of Paul Heyman! The prosecution attempt to charge Paul E's booking for being more detrimental than positive for the wrestling business in the long haul, and debate the hardcore style, the human toll, drugs, ECW's influence on WWF Attitude and impact on the Monday Night War, just how key they really were to the stars that got signed by the Big Two, his role booking Smackdown, eye for talent and much more, as the defence vehemently backs one of the most well regarded figures in the industry. And as always, we take your statement on Paul E's booking legacy. Will Heyman be found guilty? Check it out and let us know what you think! http://squaredcirclegazette.podbean.com/mf/web/8y4eda/SCGRadio43-TheTrialOfPaulHeyman.mp3

dawho5
This argument that Heyman creating this idea of a "golden era" for both the wrestlers and the fans at the time seems like an odd thing to use against him as a promoter. It seems like that would have been his main goal at the time and his success in achieving it seems like something in his favor. I would imagine that any promoter would want to create the illusion that right here, right now is where you want to be as a wrestling fan. That Heyman did this is an achievement that should be lauded for.
JaymeFuture
Agreed. I think the wording of the charge made it a tough argument for them, the idea that everything Heyman was doing was focused on the here and now, but sacrificed the future as a result had to be their argument. I do think they were on to something with that mentality somewhat staining wrestling's image to the eyes of TV exec and advertisers, thats probably the best argument you can make in that sense? SomethingSavage
It's unfair to lay all the blame at Heyman's doorstep though. Hotshot booking is what damaged the business for the long-term. Hotshot booking wasn't exclusive to ECW - it was borrowed or outright swiped & applied to both WCW and the Attitude Era WWF. Years and years of that hotshot booking left the business with this longstanding hangover. Furthermore, Heyman didn't "create" or "breed" a new kind of fan. Those fans were going to come from somewhere, and they were going to start attending wrestling events - regardless. The changes in our culture, our media, our access to information, our obsessions with instant communication & gratification... all that stuff was coming. Heyman didn't create the demand. He just catered to it by providing the supply.
