sek69
Just had to start this so I could say "HOLY SHIT~!" to the Edge/Sarge/Hayes segment. That was probably the best series of promos done on WWE TV all year. Makes me wonder why they don't have some of thes kids who can't talk go to Hayes to learn how shit's done. Loss
I'm not watching the show, but it turns out they're using clever methods to actually get Edge over, teasing a Michaels/Benjamin feud and even exercising storyline continuity by referencing things Bischoff has done over the past 10+ years. What the hell happened to them?
Guest TheShawshankRudotion
Yeah, I'm watchin the Hayes promo right now. Really good stuff. Edges stuff beforehand sucked, though. If they _really_ didn't want him out there, they would have gone to a commercial or something. So the believability of it all just wasn't there. The Gordy mention made for some good heat. Guest Crucifixio Jones
I completely missed it due to turning the channel after I saw the ridiculousness of the Trial of Eric Bischoff. I stuck around for Mickey James (sp?) vs. Victoria, for obvious reasons (and believe me it wasn't workrate) but once I saw Chris Masters standing in the courtroom, shirtless, as Vince's personal baliff and Stephanie entered the room to her entrance theme, I had had about all I could stomach. Guest TheShawshankRudotion
The Michaels/Benjamin promo was quite good. Benjamin got to use the right tone of voice (the deep badass black man voice), and Michaels sounded like he was in a Tarantino movie (~!) The Bischoff stuff is a waste of time. Vince just jerkin it. Strummer
Looks like Stephanie is going to be the new GM with the story that she will be "emotionally attached" to Hunter.
Guest TheShawshankRudotion
I stopped watching, but when you say "looks like", what do you mean exactly? Steph is the GM? Please don't say that.
sek69
HHH and Steph had a "moment" before the segment where Eric got fired, that's what usually passes for forshadowing in wrestling.
Guest TheShawshankRudotion
So who is GM?
sek69
They didn't name a new one, you'll have to TUNE IN NEXT WEEK TO FIND OUT~! Tony>
Guest Local Jobber R
The Michaels/Benjamin promo was quite good. Benjamin got to use the right tone of voice (the deep badass black man voice), and Michaels sounded like he was in a Tarantino movie (~!) HBK was so close to Benjamin that I was begining to think that they were going to kiss. Yeah HBK did sounded like he was re-enacting a cliche Tarantino or Kevin Smith monologue but did he have to literally do it 2 inches away from Benjamin's ear? As for Benjamin's voice well it was not as deep as say Samuel L. Jackson and it still lacks the confidence of a real man. At the moment Benjamin sounds like a teenager who is just ignoring the "nagging" parental figure, there is no emotion in his voice or his character. Get Shelton Benjamin a manager, DAMN IT! Guest EastCoastJ
I feel really bad for Eric Bischoff. He's done absolutely nothing but what has been asked of him for the last few years, and he's done an incredible job, and week after week Vince McMahon has to embarass the poor guy and write some script where Bischoff looks about two inches tall groveling to McMahon about something. If they really are getting rid of him, humiliating him for two weeks and then rewarding his hard work by taking him out of the arena in a garbage truck is no better than what they did with Jim Ross. Tonight's show was just kind of weird across the board. Using Terry Gordy's death to get heat was about as lovely as The Big Show spitting on Eddie Guerrero's lowrider last week, but damn was Michael Hayes awesome tonight. It was like watching Mid-South or something.
Guest SweetMama Scaat
I dont think the Gordy line was that offensive, it was more equvical to the time Johnny Nitro mentioned to Road Warrior Animal that Hawk was dead. Raw was entertaining as a whole but still kindve retarded. I guess they decided to be semi coherent since Rita Crosbys and unoffical WWE diva now. Guest EastCoastJ
On a side note, they stuck with that shot of Rita Crosby for way too long. For the first five seconds it was cute as she was smiling and cheering, but 45 seconds later the camera is still right up in her face and she looked uncomfortable as all hell. Akward stuff. sek69
Of all the media chicks WWE could have chosen to suck up to, it's funny they picked the one who sounds like Kermit the Frog with a chest cold.
Guest savagerulz
I thought RAW had its moments. Most of the show I thought to be pretty lacking...Maybe it was the poor crowd reaction of the night. You saw how much HBK tried to work the crowd up. They were just dead. The only good part of the "Cutting Edge" was Hayes going off. That's old school. That's emotion. That's what we need to see more of from the newer guys rather than the same old stuff every week. Getting rid of Bischoff is dumb. While Smackdown's gone through what...3 different GM's in the tenure of Bischoff?? Bischoff was just about the only solid part of the show. He was established.....It's WWE's fault that they made him a bitch. Bischoff didn't get old, we just got tired of seeing Bischoff not being used how he should've been. There's nothing for him to do besides the GM role. He doesn't belong being a Manager or some kind of mouthpiece. Bischoff's just been used to McMahons amusement. That's it. They can get anyone else to be GM...But in my opinion, it's not going to be anywhere as effective as Bischoff is.
Guest savagerulz
HHH and Steph had a "moment" before the segment where Eric got fired, that's what usually passes for forshadowing in wrestling. I don't think that was designed to foreshadow her as GM though. It looks to me more like that was foreshadowing the two of them getting back together on screen, in which case Steph doesn't need the GM role to be on TV. Of course that doesn't mean she won't get it.
sek69
It was funny that I was just watching World Class tapes and made a post about how good the Freebirds were at drawing heat, then Hayes comes out and proves my point. WWE should never have a wrestler who can't cut a promo as long as he's around.
Guest EastCoastJ
I wish they would just let Arn Anderson, Michael Hayes and Ted Dibiase do something as long as they are in the arena every night anyway and can talk better than anyone on the roster. Anyone Hayes or Anderson managed would instantly be about a million times more credible. Hayes actually wouldn't make a bad General Manager if they insist on doing that type of thing. The Thread Killer
If you read Foley's first book he credits Hayes with giving him some good advice on his way up about cutting a promo. I also thought back in the day that the then WWF did the right thing giving the Hardys Hayes as a manager...so of course they scrapped it. You guys are right though...how sad is it that a long retired road agent can cut a better promo than 90% of the WWE roster. You'd think that somebody would figure out that what you get when you are allowed to contribute to your own promos and you don't have to follow a script written by a failed soap opera writer. sek69
I don't know why, but it seems like no one who's started wrestling in the last 10 years can cut a promo with any emotion. I don't know if Hayes had any legit emotion with the Flair situation (I'm guessing not unless the drinking part hit home), but he sure had me sold with that promo. Isn't that the #1 rule of cutting a promo? You gotta believe what you're saying or no one else will.
Loss
I think a lot of the young guys growing up today watched a lot of guys that weren't necessarily great talkers but were supreme athletes and decided that's who they wanted to emulate. Guys like Shawn Michaels and Rey Misterio. The problem is -- with few exceptions, they aren't really putting much thought or effort into their characters and their interviews, and as a result, promos suck most of the time in 2005. Hayes didn't give anything resembling an earth-shattering interview that you'll remember forever, but he did outdo every interview every wrestler in the company has done in at least two years, which is why it stood out. The guys that grew up watching Austin, Rock and Foley talk people into buildings in 1999-2000 should be around in a few years, so maybe that aspect will improve soon. Guest Crucifixio Jones
Over the years, it's almost as if Vince has kept around guys like Fit Finlay, Dean Malenko, Arn Anderson, Michael Hayes, Jim Cornette and Paul Heyman not for the tremendous contributions they could make to WWE product but just to make sure they don't end up helping anyone else.
