World Championship Wrestling Taping

Tony Schiavone and David Crockett welcome us to the newly branded World Championship Wrestling Saturday evening show on Superstation WTBS. As a part of acquiring the Georgia territory, a deal was struck between Ted Turner and Jim Crockett to bring Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling to WTBS and it’s 6:05 TV slot. They discuss the new working relationship with Ted Turner and with MACW running Georgia, specifically Atlanta regularly, they will now broadcast their Mid Atlantic show on the superstation. World Wide Wrestling will now fill in the syndication that MACW’s regular Saturday show ran in, as WCW is now a WTBS exclusive show. It’s also TWO HOURS, and that will bring a lot of excitement to MACW.

They promise to discuss the events in Atlanta with lots of clips from that show throughout tonight’s event. They also have an announcement stemming from that main event title cage match. But first, let’s get to the action.

Single’s Match

Magnum TA vs Mike Sharpe

One Fall, 10-Minute TV Time Limit

Magnum makes quick work of his larger opponent this week. He picks up the win with the Belly-to-belly suplex. Just as the match finishes, the NWA United States Champion walks out to the WCW set (http://s2.dmcdn.net/IZ2_T/x360-y8W.jpg) and Tony talks with the champion. Harley says that he came here for the competition and he sees this young punk out here. Race has a problem with Magnum, and he walks over to the set on his way back to the locker room. He wants to know what Harley’s problem is. Race says he wants to put this kid in his place. Magnum calmly says anytime, anywhere….and don’t forget to bring that US title. Magnum walks back to the locker room and Race is steaming about that. Race promises to teach that kid a lesson.

Time: 2:41

Decision: Magnum TA

COMMERCIAL BREAK 1

David welcomes us back to the debut of World Championship Wrestling from Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling on the superstation WTBS. He informs us that we had some major controversy stemming from the main event at the first battle in Atlanta this past Monday. We saw Ric Flair pay off Skandor Akbar to help him win the cage match by getting the Russian Bolsheviks and Abdullah The Butcher to interfere. We go to clips of the Steel Cage match and the ending. We return as David has a statement from MACW officials, and it says that they have indefinitely suspended Skandor Akbar from MACW. He just returned from a suspension and gets himself into more trouble. Because Ric Flair is the NWA World Heavyweight Champion, they cannot suspend him, but they did fine him $25,000 for his actions, which he has his lawyers working on getting that overturned. David brings out the World Champion, “Nature Boy” Ric Flair. Flair is as confident as ever. David asks him about being fined for $25,000. Flair says it’s not about the money, it’s about the principal of the thing. What did he really do? He won a Steel Cage match, by any means necessary. He didn’t break the rules, because there wasn’t any, pal! Whoooo!!! He’s the Champion, and he proved it in a huge way Monday night in Atlanta. He proved it so well, he got MACW this national exposure with his very good friend, Ted Turner. Flair is the diamond in the rough here in the NWA. David asks what is next for the champ. Flair says he will continue to be The Man, The Champ, and the greatest World Champion there ever has been. Flair shows off the championship belt and struts off to the locker room.

COMMERCIAL BREAK 2

We return with Tony and David telling us that up next is an NWA World Six-Man Tag Team Title Match, with the former champions, The Moondogs against the current champions, Kamala and The Strongbow’s. They question how effective the champions will be without their manager.

NWA World Six-Man Tag Team Championship Match

Challengers, The Moondogs (Spot, Rex & Moretti) vs Champions, Kamala & The Strongbow’s (Jules & “Chief” Jay)

One-Fall, 30-Minute TV Time Limit

The fans are excited for this championship match. The champions get the advantage early and work over the challengers, specifically Moretti. He hangs in through the beating, but it’s been tough. Mostly the Strongbow’s are working him over here. It seems they are keeping Kamala on the apron as the cleaner when the time calls for it. Moretti escapes the punishment and gets a tag into Spot, but Spot gets caught in the corner and the champions regain control as we head into a commercial break.

COMMERCIAL BREAK 3

As we return from the break. Kamala finally gets into the match, and all hell breaks loose. All six-men get inside the ring and brawl all over the place. Spot tosses Jay Strongbow from the ring to the floor. Rex shoulder-blocks Jules to the mat, at the same time Kamala picks up Moretti for a bodyslam, Spot punches Kamala in the head, and Kamala steps back, trips over the fallen Jules Strongbow, and crashes to the mat. Rex sees the opportunity and drops with a vicious headbutt. Spot leaps onto Kamala and gets the three-count to recapture the titles!

The new champions celebrate at ringside as Kamala gets up and chops at his partners. They bail from the ring as Kamala just stomps around the ring angry and confused. He climbs out of the ring and slowly exits the arena.

Tony and David once against discuss Monday night’s Atlanta show, and this time they show clips of the Six-Man title match with then champions, Kamala and the Strongbow’s defending against Magnum TA, Kendall Windham and Andre The Giant. We see the last couple of minutes of the match. Skandor Akbar interferes and causes a DQ to save the titles for his men.

COMMERCIAL BREAK 4

Tag Team Match

The Russian Bolsheviks vs Paul Roma & Jim Powers

One-Fall, 10-Minute TV Time Limit

Nikolai Volkoff started off and just over powers the young Paul Roma. He tosses Roma into the corner and tags in Powers. Jimmy comes in and Volkoff sends him crashing into the opposite corner. Zhukov gets tagged in and he punishes Powers with some stiff strikes and a big throw into the center of the ring. He injures Jimmy with a vicious clothesline. Boris tags in Volkoff to finish him off with a big backbreaker for the pinfall.

Time: 4:34

Decision: The Bolsheviks

Tony informs the audience that signed for next week, Harley Race defends the United States title against Magnum TA. Tony says this is a major title match for the second week of World Championship Wrestling. Tony then takes us back to Atlanta and shows us a clip from the Race/Weaver title match. We see a few minutes of the middle of the contest where Race has control. We skip ahead to the finish as Harley lands the leaping knee smash for the win. Tony sends us to commercials.

COMMERCIAL BREAK 5

David welcomes us back to the show. David tells us that we had a bloody steel cage match between two former friends. He shoots us to the footage. We see the bloody brawl, and we see Sam Houston gain the victory after a long bloody battle. We return to the arena and David is there with Houston. Sam thanks the fans for their support. He wants to put this rivalry behind him and look back to getting on the winning track and back to some gold in MACW. David tells us that Terry Taylor has left the territory after the loss in Atlanta. Sam said he made his bed, now he’s gotta lie in it. David sends us to commercial, and when we return….SUPERSTAR GRAHAM!

COMMERCIAL BREAK 6

Tony welcomes “Superstar” Billy Graham to the show. Graham struts out to the interview set and discusses coming to MACW. Ted Turner personally brought him to the officials in MACW. Time: 2:35

Decision: “Superstar” Billy Graham

Tully Blanchard makes his way to the interview set. He grabs David and tells him to play the footage from Atlanta. David hesitates, but tells the truck to roll it. We see a few minutes of the Taped Fists match between Tully and Barry Windham. We see the brawl end when JJ Dillon gets a roll of silver dollars to Tully and he punches Barry out with it. He covers Windham and gets the pinfall. We head back to the set and Tully is glowing with pride over that victory. JJ has joined him on the set. They proclaim that he is the greatest Television Champion in the history of the NWA and no one will change that. Tully Blanchard Enterprises is growing by the hour and next week, they promise there will be an addition to the franchise. JJ tells the champ that they have to head to the ring for his title defense.

The announcer’s then ask why someone who just entered MACW get such an opportunity right off the bat. Jim states that the NWA board looked at the top contenders, and when they were able to sign Mr. Backlund, they looked at his record and determined that he would be a worthy challenger for the World’s Champion based on his record as a Heavyweight Champion elsewhere. He knows this is a dream match for the wrestling world, and the NWA and MACW will bring it to the fans next month!

The Strongbow’s walk back towards the interview set and Tony welcomes them. He asks the Strongbow’s about Skandar Akbar being suspended from MACW. They respond saying that they are glad he was run out of MACW. He is pure evil, and that they let him get into their minds. They turned into men they don’t respect. They turned into greedy, self-centered businessmen instead of the respectful WRESTLERS that they truly are. They had become frustrated, and wanted so badly to be at the top of the tag team division, that they let him get into their heads. Jay and Jules want to say how sorry they are for letting their fans down. He’ll even put the belt on the line. JJ and Tully are so confident. Superstar Graham comes through the curtain and walks to the ring. The crowd pops, not expecting Graham. JJ and Tully’s confidence almost instantly disappears. JJ tries to backstep out of the challenge, but Tully waves him off, and they slowly walk to the ring. Tully and JJ are discussing the situation. Graham sends Blanchard flying into the corner. Graham poses in the center of the ring. Blanchard looks nervous. He bails again, walking around the ring one lap before climbing back into the match. JJ steps up and distracts the challenger for Tully to get a cheap shot in and take control. It only lasts a minute as Graham uses his power to take down the challenger. Tully backs off, poking Billy in the eye. Tully tries to pound away on the massive Superstar. He gets him on the ground and tries to work over Graham, but the Superstar is too much and begins to get back to his feet once again. Tully gets some momentum off the ropes and rushes in clothesline, but Graham just brushes it off. He military presses the champion over his head and slams him hard to the mat. Before he could try to get a pinfall, Blanchard escapes to the outside. JJ has the TV title belt and they both walk away from the ring to the locker room. Tully gets counted out.

Fuji had the control early, but a missed dropping headbutt changed the momentum. Moments later, just as we were returning, Magnum drops Fuji with the Belly-to-Belly Suplex for the win.

Time: 4:41

Decision: Magnum TA

David welcomes in Bob Backlund. He is quite soft spoken. He thanks for the fans of MACW for welcoming him to the territory so fast. He didn’t realize how much his repuatation preceeded him. He hopes to live up to that as he gets ready for the biggest match of his career against Ric Flair for the NWA World’s Heavyweight Championship. Bob says he will be on World Wide Wrestling this weekend, as he is facing off with Toru Tanaka. He knows this is quite the challenge, he doesn’t look past any opponent. You have got MACW down with the right movements right now. I like the house show circuits and the dark match main events. It is something I would like to utilize but just don't find time to do. Interesting to see Backlund here and it is inevitable before he and Flair really heat up. All the while we have this Magnum TA guy who is ready to explode onto the world... good stuff to come.

Great show. Love where your angles seem to be going.

TA vs Larry Z and Flair vs Backlund are great draws! Hopefully someday you will get to Flair vs TA but be patient as that would be an instant classic.. In my opinion that might just be the best any of us could do.

Also, for the Fugi Clan gives a lot of credibility to your mid-card as there is a lot of talent there!

Keep up the good work!

Larry claims that Magnum is running scared and they called him out where he had no choice to accept the challenge. Magnum comes out to the set and signs the contact. He can’t wait to see Larry at the Fall Brawl. The Bolsheviks sneak out from the locker room and attack the US Champion. Larry and Paul join in the attack. Paul Jones walks over to Tony and grabs the microphone and informs us that his newest tag team is the Bolsheviks! The Fantastics rush out to save Magnum from more of a beating.

COMMERCIAL BREAK 2

David and Tony welcome us back to the show. They quickly discuss that after The Fantastics helped Magnum to the back, Paul Jones told us that he has sold the contracts of the United States Tag Team Champions. COMMERCIAL BREAK 7

NWA Television Championship Match

Tully Blanchard defeated Superstar Graham via Countout when JJ Dillon interfered and caused Graham to get counted-out. They were brawling on the floor, as Tully was trying to escape. JJ hid under the ring apron and held onto Graham’s foot as he tried to re-enter the ring. When Graham kicked him loose, he got into the ring, grabbed Tully, bench-pressed him over his head and dropped him hard onto the mat. He pinned Tully and counted his own pinfall. He held his hands over Tully as JJ threatened that he would NEVER be the TV champion. Graham grabbed the belt from the referee and held it over his head. He then dropped it over Blanchard as Superstar Graham left the ring. JJ climbed into the ring to check on the champion as we went to black.

WCW TAPING ENDS

WWW is all from the Johnny Rougeau Memorial Cup show. Bob Caudle and Johnny Weaver do commentary over the footage Lutte Internationale sent to the NWA.

“Hacksaw” Butch Reed (USWA) vs Nikolai Volkoff (Mid-Atlantic)

In the opener, Guy Hauray explains that Nikolai Volkoff replaces Harley Race, who has left the Mid-Atlantic territory to go to the USWA. 2 rough and tough individuals scratching and clawing their way and exchanging the momentum with each other. In the very last moments of the match, Butch Reed hits Nikolai Volkoff with the shortarm clothesline and makes the cover but the time limit expires! Right off the bat, our first surprise as both men are eliminated from the tournament. Butch Reed takes the mic and says this is bullshit and he had this match won. Reed says he’s not leaving the ring until the match is restarted. However, out comes International TV Champion Gino Brito from Lutte Internationale and says that he won’t let someone like Reed ruin the tournament for an ego trip. Brito says that if Reed wants to step into the ring again in Montreal, all he has to do is to stick around and face him on August 29th and he’ll put the International TV Championship on the line against him. Butch Reed accepts and says that he’s bringing the International TV Championship back with him and he’s gonna hand it over to Fritz Von Erich in Texas.

Time Limit Draw – both Butch Reed & Nikolai Volkoff are eliminated

Tito Santana (AWA) vs Superstar Billy Graham (Mid-Atlantic)

The crowd seems to be solidly behind Tito Santana in this one. It is clear that Superstar is trying to overmatch Santana with his power and he’s being successful for most of the match. We’re in the final moments of the match and we could very well be headed to another time limit draw. But with less than 30 seconds to go, Tito Santana hits Superstar with his flying forearm smash and pins him at 14:32 to advance!

Winner: Tito Santana (14:32) – advances to 2nd round

Bob Caudle and Johnny Weaver discuss these two matches, in clipped form, showing thus far the two matches were the NWA contestants were eliminated. Up next after the break, we look at the other two first round matches.

COMMERCIAL BREAK 1

Barry Windham (Mid-Atlantic) vs Dick Slater (w/Jimmy Hart) (WWF)

Jacques Rougeau is still in the aisle when Dick Slater walks out for the match and Slater is taunting Jacques about his quick loss. Then, Barry Windham is coming out and he invites Jacques Rougeau to stay at ringside for the match. Dick Slater is none too happy about that and as the bell rings, all he can do is look at Jacques Rougeau and yell at him. They get into a heated argument and eventually, Dick Slater turns around and is met with Barry Windham’s Lariat. Windham gets a quick victory at 1:49 to advance. Jacques high-fives Barry Windham and they leave together while Dick Slater throws a temper tantrum in the ring!

Winner: Barry Windham (1:49) – advances to 2nd round

Larry Zbyszko (Mid-Atlantic) vs Jay Youngblood (Independent)

Another case of a singles veteran against a tag team specialist in this first round. Jay Youngblood’s quickness proves to be a problem for the Living Legend and Zbyszko has to resort to dirty tactics to get the victory. At one point, Zbyszko take off the protecting pad from the top turnbuckle and while the referee has his back turned to put the pad back on, Zbyszko uses a roll of coins to nail Jay Youngblood with it. Zbyszko covers Youngblood and gets the victory at 6:07.

Winner: Larry Zbyszko (6:07) – advances to 2nd round

George “The Animal” Steele (w/Richard “Le Magnifique” Charland) (Lutte Internationale) vs Larry Zbyszko (Mid-Atlantic)

As opposed to the previous match, none of these men are exactly fan favourites but it didn’t take away from the crowd being invested in this match as well, given that a Lutte Internationale representative was involved in it. 2 clashes of styles as Larry Zbyszko’s scientific style met George Steele’s more brutish style. Zbyszko’s dirty tricks were ineffective in this one since Richard Charland could make sure they would be rendered useless. Once again, Steele picks up the victory with his hammerlock slam at 8:03 to advance in the tournament.

Winner: George “The Animal” Steele (8:03) – advances to quarterfinals

Bob and Johnny show the first round where the NWA stars were involved. They also discussed the second round, where Larry Zbyszko didn’t make it pass George Steele. Up next, we see how Barry Windham fared in the second round.

COMMERCIAL BREAK 2

Barry Windham (Mid-Atlantic) vs Dusty Rhodes (USWA)

If the preceding match was the best match of the night, this one was probably the most anticipated match of this 2nd round. Both men shook hands before the bell rings and the crowd is literally split 50/50 between both wrestlers. Windham showed that his deceptive agility could be enough to lead him to victory but that wasn’t without counting Dusty Rhodes’ immense heart, which gave for a tremendous spectacle for the fans at the Montreal Forum. But both men also showed a lot of pride and desire to win, which ironically lead to the end of the match as well. Windham & Dusty got into a furious exchange in the corner and in the heat of the moment, both men shoved referee Luigi Macera twice, giving him no choice but to disqualify both men, much to the dismay of the fans in attendance. Macera officially called off the match at 13:47

Both Barry Windham & Dusty Rhodes are disqualified & are eliminated from the tournament

After voicing their displeasure of the referee’s decision, Barry Windham & Dusty Rhodes shook hands and cut a promo talking about how they want to come back next year and do better. Barry Windham says that he’ll watch the rest of the tournament with interest, just like the American Dream and they hope the right man will win the tournament. Both leave under a big round of applause.

Bob and Johnny discuss the respect Barry Windham had for this tournament and how disappointed he was when his match went to a double-disqualification. However, Barry did have some action on the final night of action from Montreal, and we’ll see how that came about next!

Rick Martel (Lutte Internationale) vs Bob Orton (w/Jimmy Hart) (WWF)

Like his previous 2nd round match, Bob Orton jumped on Rick Martel from the start to gain an early advantage. However, Rick Martel fought back quickly and got the advantage. Martel is able to hit his Slingshot Splash early but here comes International Heavyweight Champion Greg Valentine to interfere! Referee calls for the bell at 2:41 and Rick Martel advances to the semifinals.

Winner: Rick Martel (2:41) – advances to semifinals

Greg Valentine & Bob Orton team up on Rick Martel as they focus on Martel’s ankle. They stomp him while Jimmy Hart go gets a chair. Valentine positions the ankle to be broken with a chairshot but before he can do anything, Barry Windham & Dusty Rhodes run in to come to the aid of Rick Martel as all hell breaks loose! Dusty delivers a pair of bionic elbows to Bob Orton & Jimmy Hart while Windham trades fists with Valentine. Windham throws Valentine outside of the ring and checks on Martel. Windham asks for the microphone and tells Valentine that he seems to be looking for a fight so why don’t he put his money where his mouth is and put his International Heavyweight Championship on the line against him right here, right now? Valentine agrees and the match is on!

International Heavyweight Championship

Greg Valentine (w/Bob Orton & Jimmy Hart) vs Barry Windham (w/Dusty Rhodes)

The match picks up exactly where it was left off when Greg Valentine interfered in the previous match with both Valentine & Windham trading fists. Windham has always been a deceptively fast wrestler for a man his size and Valentine finds that out early and it looks like he could lose his title to another promotion! And indeed, Barry Windham has Greg Valentine down quickly with his flying lariat and makes the cover but while Dusty Rhodes is fighting outside with Bob Orton, Dick Slater (who was eliminated by Windham in the first round) runs in and jumps on Windham! Referee Adrien Desbois calls for the bell at 4:55.

Winner: Barry Windham by DQ (4:55); Greg Valentine retains
