AWA All-Star Wrestling on ESPN for Sept. 21st

We start off our show this week with the semi-final and final matches in the recent Johnny Rougeau Memorial Cup, both featuring the AWA Canadian champ Rick Martel. As before, these matches are courtesy of our good friends in Lutte Internationale in Montreal. The matches are edited for time to fit AWA TV.

George “The Animal” Steele (w/Richard Charland) (Lutte Internationale) vs Rick Martel (Lutte Internationale)

It was a bruised & battered Rick Martel who entered his semi-finals match against his nemesis’ gatekeeper, George “The Animal” Steele, with fellow Frenchy’s Legion member, Richard “Le Magnifique” Charland at ringside. Despite still limping a bit from his previous match, Martel is still able to execute his gameplan like he had planned it. However, one false step during a leapfrog and Martel seemed to have injured his ankle again. And adding to that, the bruised ribs he still hasn’t completely recovered from and this gave The Animal multiple targets to zero in. Alternating between the ankle and the ribs, with a bit of help from Charland when the referee’s back was turned, Steele is able to get some momentum. Fortunately, for Martel, Steele commits a mistake when he goes for his trademark splash and Martel is able to dodge. Martel mounts a comeback and hits his signature spots but then the action goes to the outside after Martel clotheslined Steele over the top rope. Even though this is more Steele’s territory, Martel goes outside anyway and goes into battle with Steele while the referee counts. Martel gets the upper hand and Charland tries to interfere but Martel clocks him with a right hand. Steele then clubs Martel from behind and he goes crashing into the ring post. Steele positions Martel in front of the ring post and goes for a headbut....but Martel dodges! Steele headbutts the post and collapses on the floor. That allows Martel to rest long enough to climb back in the ring and Charland is unable to wake up The Animal in time so Martel gets the countout victory and moves on to the finals!

Winner: Rick Martel/countout (13:28) – advances to finals

Johnny Rougeau Memorial Cup Final Match

Terry Gordy (USWA) vs Rick Martel (Lutte Internationale)

The moment has finally come to determine the winner of the 1st Johnny Rougeau Memorial Cup. While Rick Martel has caught literally no break in this tournament, Terry “Bam Bam” Gordy is well-rested, benefitting from a bye in the semis, since both Tito Santana & Bret Hart were eliminated in the quarterfinals. Another case of power vs strength and throughout the match, Guy Hauray & Édouard Carpentier put over Terry Gordy and the possibility of his Fabulous Freebirds cohorts, Michael PS Hayes & Buddy Jack Roberts showing up to help him. Jacques, Raymond & Armand Rougeau are seated at ringside, looking to congratulate the winner of the tournament. Martel fought as hard as he could and gave it his best shot. Martel’s able to hit his Slingshot Splash on Gordy but Gordy kicked out at 2. The end of the match saw Rick Martel first attempting the Boston Crab but changed his mind and went instead for a Figure Four but Gordy countered and shoved Martel, who went head first in the turnbuckle. Martel staggered and Gordy hit the High Angle Belly-to-Back Suplex to get the victory at 21:36 and win the Johnny Rougeau Memorial Cup

Winner: Terry Gordy (21:36) – Wins the Johnny Rougeau Memorial Cup

"The Young Gentleman" Steve Jones vs. Paul Diamond

The gifted young English rookie Steve Jones has come out of nowhere to get a two match winning streak over Pat Tanaka. Tanaka’s Badd Company partner, Paul Diamond, was fixed on ending the streak and avenging Tanaka’s losses. He opened up with his high speed offense on Jones, who countered with his own technical skills and wear down holds. Part way through the match, the third man in Badd Company, Chick Donovan, came out to encourage Diamond, but this only seemed to annoy Diamond. At one point, the two wrestlers criss-crossed the ropes and Donovan reached in from the outside and grabbed Jones’ leg, tripping him and causing him to face plant hard into the mat. Diamond saw Jones laying stunned on the mat and immediately figured out what happened. Instead of taking advantage, he leaned over the ropes and started berating Donovan, telling him that he didn’t need his help. While this was going on, Jones had recovered enough to see Diamond with his back to him and rolled him up with a single leg cradle, getting the one two three. After the match, Jones held out his hand to Diamond. Diamond quickly shook it but was clearly furious with Donovan.

Interview : Ken Resnick stands in the ring

Resnick : Folks, my next guest have gotten a lot of people talking since their return to the AWA … “Playboy” Buddy Rose and “The Polish Prince” Ed Wiskowski!

The crowd enthusiastically cheers Rose and Wiskowski as they head to the ring. Rose and Wiskowski seem to be enjoying the crowd response, in spite of themselves.

Resnick : Buddy Rose, you’ve really gotten the fans behind you in your fight with Rick Rude and the rest of the Bad News Breakers. Is this inspiring you to change your ways?

Rose : Ken, the fans know that the Bad News Breakers are just that : Bad News. Rick Rude is the poster boy for Million Dollar Body With A Ten Cent Mind and the rest of his pals aren’t any better. I tried to help make something of him, but he just wouldn’t listen. So I keep on proving to him, nobody is smarter than Buddy Rose. As for changing my ways … well, the Playboy will always be the Playboy, so I’m just going to keep on doing what I do best, and if the fans cheer me for it, that just shows they’ve got good taste!

Resnick : Ed Wiskowski, you came out of nowhere to save Buddy Rose last week. It looks like you are the last of his old allies that he has left.

Wiskowski : Resnick, people like Rude, Oliver and Sweetan are no better than rodents. They have no sense of loyalty. The Polish Prince understands loyalty! This man and I go back a long way. He has always had my back, and I will always have his!

Resnick : So it looks like Rip Oliver was wrong when he said that the Playboy Club was dead.

Rose : Well, Ken, Oliver actually got it right that one time. The Playboy Club is no more. What you are looking at here is Playboy After Dark … and the clock is about to strike Midnight for the Bad News Breakers!

Buzz Sawyer & Dave Schultz vs. The Latin Lovers

After their shocking appearance at the San Francisco show, where they attacked Greg Gagne and Curt Hennig, this was the first appearance of Sawyer and Schultz in a regular match, and the clearly were not taking any prisoners. The two wild men rampaged over the Latin Lovers, blasting them with huge slams and savagely pummeling them while Col. Buck Robley cackled from ringside. When they finished Valentino off with a Spike Piledriver, it had been a foregone conclusion for most of the match. But that was not enough for Doctor D and the Mad Dog, as they attacked Javier Cruz after the match and looked to put him in a Spike Piledriver as well. This provoked Gagne and Hennig to rush into the ring to save Cruz, and the two sides proceeded to slug it out until the AWA officials cleared them from the ring.

Don Muraco & Bob Sweetan vs. Tito Santana & Koko Ware

Tito Santana brought in a new ally in his war with Don Muraco, the high flying Birdman himself, and the two seemed to instantly gel as a team, keeping the Bad News Breakers off balance with a series of double drop kicks and combination moves. It looked like they might just pull off the victory when Santana went up top for the flying clothesline, but Sweetan turned the tide by shoving Santana hard off the turnbuckle and sent him hurtling to the mat. After that, Muraco swiftly took command, hitting power move after power move, big gorilla slams followed by a nasty shoulder breaker. Koko tried to come in for the rescue but was intercepted by Sweetan, and when Muraco hit the belly to belly piledriver on Santana, it was all over. A shocking defeat for the American champion … could this be an omen of things to come?

Ken Patera & Kamala vs. Jerry Blackwell & Paul Orndorff

Ken Patera, the World Champ , has been seeming especially untouchable of late, with the monstrous Ugandan Headhunter standing as a massive roadblock to get to the world’s strongest man. Blackwell and Orndorff put up a mighty effort, with Orndorff managing an extremely impressive body slam on Kamala, but Kamala was relentless in his attack. When he bowled over Orndorff and knocked him out of the ring, Kamala kept attacking Mr. Wonderful with chops and kicks, heedless of the count going on in the ring. After the countout decision, Sheikh Kaissie got on the mic and announced that he was bringing in a special partner for Kamala for the match at the Mecca, and the crowd began buzzing as to who this could be.

Paul Orndorff & Ron Garvin vs. Kamala & ?

There was much anticipation as to who would be Kamala’s partner for this match, but nobody was truly prepared when Sheikh Adnan Kaissie announced … ABDULLAH THE BUTCHER! The Madman from Sudan and The Ugandan Headhunter charged out to the ring and attacked Orndorff and Garvin, whose ribs were bandaged from Kamala’s attack two weeks ago. This was as crazy a match as you can imagine, with Garvin and Orndorff refusing to knuckle under to their huge opponents. At one point, Garvin had Abdullah trapped in the corner and was raining big punches down on his face, but Kamala barged in and crushed him in the corner with an Avalanche. Abdullah followed up with the Sudanese Elbow Drop for the pin.

After another lengthy match where Blackwell got several near falls, Patera dodged out of the way of a Blackwell Avalanche and followed up with a second rope kneedrop to get the win.

Now those were great cards. Numerous matches that could have been main events with unpredictable outcomes made this a fun read. Each match seemed to pit even talent and I was unsure of who was getting the push except for the young Steve "Jones."

Also liked the suspense of Kamala's partner.

I have said this before but I think it holds true. If ESPN had run shows like this when they had their weekly show, the landscape of wrestling today might be completely different. Your TV show gave us great names in matches against other stars. Keep up the good work.

AWA All-Star Wrestling on ESPN and TSN, Sept. 28th

“The Young Gentleman” Steve Jones vs. “Sensei” Pat Tanaka

These two young lions have had some very exciting matches with each other over the past few weeks, with Jones ending up on top, but Tanaka campaigned hard to get one more match with the “Young Gentleman”, and Jones eagerly accepted the challenge. Jones had Mike Rotunda in his corner while Tanaka was backed by his partners, Paul Diamond and Chick Donovan, although neither Tanaka nor Diamond seemed too pleased to see Donovan. The match started out slowly , with both men testing the other to try to find a weakness, and then moved into some amateur style takedowns, with the two rookies exchanging dominance back and forth. The match ultimately opened up with Tanaka’s martial arts moves squaring off against Jones’ steely fists . The match quickened the pace with both men coming off the ropes with big moves , but took a different turn when Jones ducked down from an attempted Tanaka leg lariat and instead Tanaka collided with the ref and knocked him to the mat. Jones rushed over and tried to help the ref to his feet and Donovan, seeing Jones with his back turned to Tanaka, tossed a set of brass knucks into the ring which Tanaka caught. Tanaka stared at the knucks for a few seconds but then tossed them out to Diamond, unused. The ref, however, had seen him with the knucks and went over to the timekeeper to call for the DQ. Tanaka protested that he had never used the knucks and Jones argued with the ref in favor of continuing the match, so the ref reversed himself and told them to continue. Donovan was screaming from ringside that Tanaka was an idiot for not using the knucks, which provoked Diamond to use said knucks to sock him on the jaw , and Donovan was out light a light. Tanaka and Jones continued to go toe to toe in the ring until Jones whipped Tanaka into the ropes and got ready to his the Iron Fist, but Tanaka was able to duck under it and come back from the other ropes and hit Jones square on the jaw with the Thrust Kick. One … Two .. Three, and Tanaka was finally able to best the Young Gentleman. The moment the match was called, Tanaka helped Jones to his feet and bowed to him in respect, which Jones returned. Diamond came to the ring to congratulate Tanaka and both members of Badd Company shook hands with Jones and Rotunda before Tanaka and Jones raised each other’s arms as a show of respect, all while the fans gave them a standing ovation for such an outstanding match.

Wahoo McDaniel vs. “Ravishing” Rick Rude

Rude has had some poor luck of late in his matches with Buddy Rose and Playboy After Dark and looked to take it out on McDaniel, but Wahoo was in no mood to be intimidated, firing back at Rude’s aggression with some truly vicious chops. This set the pace for a very brutal match, with Rude using his power to slam and knock down Wahoo and Wahoo coming back with a variety of leglocks to try to break down Rude. The match took a strange turn when “Playboy” Buddy Rose showed up at ringside, put on Rude’s ring robes and proceeded to parade around the ringside area with them, to the great amusement of the audience. Rude had Wahoo set up for the Rude Awakening DDT when he finally noticed Rose and dropped Wahoo to charge over to the ropes and scream at Rose. When he turned his attention back to the ring, he was met by a huge overhand chop, followed by a running kneedrop that got the pin for McDaniel. Rose ran back to the locker room wearing Rude’s robe, clearly tickled pink that he had once again put one over on the Ravishing One.

Curt Hennig & Rick Martel vs. Dave Schultz & Mike Shaw

For his ongoing struggles against Col. Buck Robley’s Army, Curt Hennig has brought in the Canadian Champion Rick Martel to fight by his side. He certainly needed some top level help, as Doctor D and the Tank were relentless in attacking both men, with Shaw particularly focusing on Martel. Hennig and Martel fought back hard, like their lives depended on it, and put up an heroic effort, even looking like they might just pull it off when a double dropkick on Schultz got them a 2 and three quarters count that was only interrupted by an elbow drop from Shaw. Shaw wound up dragging Martel outside and, while Schultz distracted the referee, slammed his head into the turnbuckle post before giving him a big splash on the ringside floor. Martel was is no shape to make it back to the ring, and the Army took the decision by countout.

Koko Ware vs. Rip Oliver

Oliver came to the ring with “Bruiser” Bob Sweetan by his side, who tried throughout the match to work in cheap shots on the always popular Birdman. Koko didn’t seem to be fazed by this, and in fact seemed to get a lot of pleasure in winding up Sweetan and then ducking out of his way. He used his superior speed to pepper Oliver with shots and dropkicks and then duck out of the way when he or Sweetan tried to retaliate. Koko had Oliver lined up for the top rope flying dropkick to finish him off, but Sweetan came up behind him and shoved him hard off the top turnbuckle. As the ref called for the DQ, Sweetan and Oliver put the boots to Koko until Buddy Rose and Ed Wiskowski rushed to the ring and ran them off. Rose and Wiskowski both helped Koko make it back to the locker room.

Kamala vs. Master Gee

Hoo boy. Sheikh Adnan Kaissie was clearly looking to make a point with this match, as he pointed at Master Gee and shouted at him, “No prisoners!” Kamala immediately charged across the ring and rained down brutal chops on Master Gee, stomping him hard when he hit the ground. He then quickly hit the Air Africa splash on Master Gee, but that was not enough, as he then went up to the top rope and crushed him with a flying Air Africa. He looked like he was going to go up top again but the AWA officials interceded and demanded that he leave the ring. Poor Master Gee had to be taken from the ring on a stretcher. Can anyone stop the big Ugandan Headhunter?

Paul Orndorff vs. Mr. Olympia

Orndorff has announced that he is gunning for Ken Patera and his AWA world title. Mr. Olympia has taken it as his mission to make sure that Orndorff was in no condition to do so. Olympia relentlessly targeted Orndorff’s arms with intense armwringers, but Orndorff kept working his way out of them. The masked man changed tactic and started working over Orndorff’s legs to set him up for the Powerlock, but again Mr. Wonderful would reverse that and take the fight back to Olympia. Orndorff then started to do his own work breaking down Mr. Olympia, using a series of suplexes and powerslams before locking him in a tight bearhug that wore down the masked man. It looked like that might just take out Olympia but he got a vicious eye gouge on Orndorff to finally break the hold. After a series of kneelifts that staggered Orndorff, Olympia got him up in the belly to belly piledriver to finish him off, but Orndorff kept kicking until he caused Olympia to tip over and reversed it, hitting his own belly to belly piledriver. One … two … three and Orndorff had gotten a very impressive win that got him one step closer to facing the champ.

Thanks for that, Steve has been an especially fun project for me. I'd seen previous bookers get frustrated with how to use his Lordship, but I remember that the first person who lobbied to bring him into the fame was saying how he would like to build him up from the very start, and that's how I knew to use him. It's been very enjoyable to take have the fresh, idealistic Steve Jones and have him be the acorn that would grow into the mighty oak of William Regal. Mike Rotunda taking him under his wing made sense for the whole JSA subtext I am trying to bring to the AWA. Even his finisher , bringing in the Power Of The Punch a couple of decades early, makes sense : he's a gifted newcomer but still very raw, just don't let him hit that Iron Fist on you or it is all over.

I agree. Buzz and Schultz might just have the energy to match the Road Warriors. I also loved the progression of your card from openers to midcarders to main eventers. The AWA is by far the most realistic promotion here. While many of us, myself included, have gone for star after star, except for Boon, we could probably never pay our bills. Great work and always a fun read.

I remember in a shoot interview, Jake Roberts sneering at the Sawyer brothers booking themselves to go over the Road Warriors, given the size difference. Buzz and Doctor D together, however, has the aspect of raw, crazy, dangerous violence that would be able to balance out the sheer power of the Roadies.

I put a lot of work into the order of my cards. There's been a number of times I have had to reshuffle the order of the matches to have it make more sense for the wrestlers current status in the fed or avoid having similar finishes back to back.
