I must say, I booked Abdullah with an angle in mind for TV, then scrapped that plan. So I still wanted to use him, and the only spot I could figure was my dark match main event. Seeing Flair and Abby...that would be awesome. hahaha Magnum and Andre was a unique as well. Who knows what will come up at the next set of TVs (coming soon by the way!)

TV Taping (WCW Airing 9/28 and WWW Airing 9/30)

Roanoke, VA

Civic Center

World Championship Wrestling airing at 4:05pm on WTBS this week due to the Live Closed Circuit Event later this evening. The announcer’s even mention that opening World Title Match is taped a couple of days earlier, so the fans know that the World Title match airing this week isn’t actually the same day as the Backlund vs Flair match that headlines Fall Brawl tonight. To try and make it seem like it was taped at a different venue, only one camera at ringside was used to capture the World Title match. When we tape the other matches for this week’s show, the normal multi-camera shoot is used to make it seem like they are “live” for the rest of the show.

Tony and David welcome everyone to the show. They discuss the Flair vs Morales match that will begin tonight’s show. Flair defending the title two nights before their Fall Brawl event against Pedro Morales! They run down the entire card before we head to the ring for the NWA World Title Match!

NWA World Heavyweight Championship Match

NWA Champion Ric Flair defeated Pedro Morales in 25:25 with the figure-four leglock. Pedro passes out and Tommy Young counts him down to end the contest. This match runs through three different segments on the show. Pedro and Ric go back and forth the first 10-12 minutes of the match. Pedro misses a leaping knee smash which Flair capitalizes on the rest of the match. As Pedro tries to build a comeback around 22 minutes into the match, he just doesn’t have enough strength in the leg and falls victim to Flair and the Figure-Four.

Tag Team Match

20-Minute Time Limit

Mad Dog & Butcher Vachon vs The Grappler’s (#1 & #2)

Basic opening tag team match here. The Grappler’s try to cheat with a foreign object under the mask, but the Vachon’s outsmarted them and grab the win with a double clothesline on Grappler #1.

Time: 8:26

Decision: Butcher & Mad Dog Vachon

Johnny Weaver is in the back with David Crockett and they run down the next match, previewing it for the live audience as we await for the next match to hit the ring.

Single’s Match

15-Minute Time Limit

Sam Houston vs “Maniac” Matt Borne (w/ Sir Oliver Humperdink)

This is a fun technical match. It is a little more fast-paced than the previous tag team match. Matt Borne gets Houston down and defeats him with a leaping seated senton from the second-rope.

Time: 8:55

Decision: Matt Borne

David and Johnny are back, talking about how great the previous match was. They think it could have gone either way, and look forward to a future rematch. They look ahead to our first title match, for the NWA United States Tag Team Championships.

NWA United States Tag Team Championship Match

One-Fall, 45-Minute Time Limit

Challengers, Jay & Jules Strongbow vs Champions, Pat Patterson & Ray Stevens (w/ JJ Dillon)

A slow-paced technical match between four of the best in the tag team division. The champions are aggressive, but not dirty, until the very end when Stevens rakes Jules eyes and Patterson leans a leaping knee to the side of the head to gain the win and retain the titles.

Time: 13:11

Decision: Still US Tag Team Champions, Ray Stevens & Pat Patterson

Johnny and David are now standing out on the interview podium discussing that title match. They talk about how the US Tag Champs are a dominant team, being champions now since the end of March. They are also the longest reigning champions in the NWA right now. We go back to the ring for the second title match.

NWA World Six-Man Tag Team Championship Match

One-Fall, 60-Minute Time Limit

Challengers The Hart Brothers (Bruce, Keith & Owen Hart) vs Champions The Moondogs (Moretti, Rex & Spot)

The champions try to wear down the challengers with their power, but the younger, faster technicians were able to keep up the pace of the match and score a huge upset victory when Keith pinned Moretti after an abdominal stretch turned into a cradle pinfall to win the titles!

Time: 13:33

Decision: NEW NWA World Six-Man Tag Team Champions The Hart Brothers

David and Johnny discuss the new champions winning the titles. They both say how it was an upset, but not totally surprising as a 3-man brother team like that is hard to doubt. Up next, the third of six championship matches, the heated contest between “Superstar” Graham and the TV Champion, Tully Blanchard as they battle in a Lumberjack Match.

NWA Television Championship, Lumberjack Match

One-Fall, with a special 30-Minute Time Limit

Challenger “Superstar” Billy Graham vs Champion Tully Blanchard (w/ JJ Dillon)

Everyone from the previous matches are are ringside as the lumberjacks. That is 4 men on each side of the ring. The match is a brawl from the beginning. Tully does try to escape, but he’s pushed back in by the wrestlers on the outside. The match stays in the ring after the first few moments, but when Tully gets the advantage, he tosses Graham outside, where Tully’s friends are. They get a few cheap shots in before sending the challenger back in. “Superstar” battles back in, sending Tully to the floor, but it’s on the side of Tully’s friends. They let him rest, as the other wrestlers come over to try to get him back in. A brawl starts on the floor, as Tully is brought back in. The referee is trying to restore order, as JJ is able to pass some brass knuckles to Tully in the confusion. Graham grabs Tully to drop him, but Tully is able to knockout the challenger with the knuckles. Tommy Young counts the three-count and Tully retains the championship. He and JJ escape the ring and rush quickly back to the locker room as the outside brawl subsides and Graham’s friends come into the ring to check on his condition.

Time: 15:49

Decision: Still TV Champion Tully Blanchard

David and Johnny discuss the results from the lumberjack match. Johnny says that someone will get Blanchard’s number and stop his reign as TV champion. We are heading into the special attraction 10-men tag team match.

Ten-Man Tag Team Special Attraction

One-Fall, 30-Minute Time Limit

Andre The Giant, Barry & Kendall Windham, Blackjack Mulligan & Pedro Morales vs Mr. Fuji’s Clan (Mr. Fuji, Mr. Saito, Mr. Pogo, Toru Tanaka & The Great Kokina)

The story is Andre vs Kokina, which is held off till the very end. Fuji’s clan get the younger Kendall in their corner and work him over for the majority of the match. Kendall is able to capitalize on a mistake by Pogo, and tag in his brother Barry. Barry is a house of fire, and eventually it breaks down into a pier-six brawl. All ten men brawl, as Andre and Kokina meet in the center of the ring and begin to battle back and forth. Kokina gets a cheap shot to the throat, and attempts to slam Andre, but Andre is able to block the body slam, and execute one of his own. Kokina rolls out to the floor, as Andre turns to Pogo and give him a major headbutt. Barry lands a cross-body block from the top rope onto the injured Pogo to get the win for his team.

Time: 9:00

Decision: Andre The Giant, Barry & Kendall Windham, Blackjack Mulligan & Pedro Morales

David and Johnny talk about the huge body slam from Andre onto Kokina. They don’t think that story is over just yet. Up Next: a big time tag team grudge match.

Tag Team Match

One-Fall, 20-Minute Time Limit

Bruiser Brody & Stan Hansen vs Abdullah The Butcher and Killer Khan (w/ Sir Oliver Humperdink)

This match is just a big brawl from the beginning. All four men just go back and forth. The referee lets it go for a few minutes, but when both teams get to the floor and start to use weapons on the floor, he calls for the bell. They don’t care, as they battle through the crowd and into the backstage area.

Time: 5:23

Decision: Double Disqualification

David and Johnny are still out in the arena, on the podium. Before they start to talk, they settle back into their chairs. As that battle was right in front of their area. They settle back down and discuss the upcoming US title match between Larry Zbyszko and Magnum TA. David predicts the champion retains, and Johnny thinks we’ll see a new champion crowned.

NWA United States Championship Match

One-Fall, 45-Minute Time Limit

Challenger Larry Zbyszko (w/ Paul Jones) vs Champion Magnum TA

This is a very good, to great, title defense for the champion. Both men have great segments. Larry cheats early to gain the advantage. Magnum keeps battling back, not giving up. Larry works over the champion, cocky at first, but get more and more frustrated through the contest. Magnum catches Zbyszko off a mistake and executes that Belly-to-Belly Suplex to get the win. The crowd is very excited and happy with this.

Time: 22:46

Decision: Still US Champion Magnum TA

David and Johnny discuss that US title match. Johnny is surprised, but happy at the result. David talks about the World Tag Team Title match upcoming. Paul Jones’ Russian Bolsheviks challenging the champions, The Fantastic’s.

NWA World Tag Team Championship Match

One-Fall, 60-Minute Time Limit

Challengers The Bolsheviks (Nikolai Volkoff & Boris Zhukov) {w/ Paul Jones} vs Champions The Fantastics

This is the old power vs speed match. The challengers take over early, and beat on the challengers throughout the match. First Fulton, then Rogers. Eventually, the length of the match gets to the challengers, as the champions turn the momentum and take the advantage, they are able to get the challengers winded. Volkoff gets dropkicked to the floor. Jones runs over to help, as the champions get Zhukov down with a rocket launcher cross-body block for the pinfall.

Time: 18:59

Decision: Still NWA World Tag Team Champions The Fantastics

One last time we see David and Johnny discuss the upcoming match. The main event of Fall Brawl, a NWA World Heavyweight Championship Match. The All-American wrestler, Bob Backlund against the World champion, Ric Flair.

NWA World Heavyweight Championship Match

One-Fall, 60-Minute Time Limit

Challenger Bob Backlund vs Champion “Nature Boy” Ric Flair

Technical match for the ages. The powerful, but quick challenger against the witty, “dirtiest player in the game” technical champion. They battle back and forth. Going blow to blow, hold for hold for the first 20 minutes. Flair finally reaches into his bag of tricks to gain the advantage. He grabs a leg and starts to work on it, but he has to fight for it. Backlund is so strong, he’s able to work a great defense. Even though Flair is the aggressor and working the holds, Backlund doesn’t let Flair have anything too long, and looks to be in great condition, even though he’s still on defense. Flair tries for the Figure-Four, but is cradled up for a two-count. Flair is a little frustrated at this point, but Backlund gets to his feet and turns the momentum into his favor. He start to deliver some heavy, powerful shot and grapples to the champion. Flair is on the defensive badly, and rolls to the floor to try and break it up. Backlund follows, and Flair gets him tricked and pushes him into the ring post. Flair rolls him back into the ring for a two-count. Flair feels confident again, working on the leg and knee of the challenger. Backlund is more hurt, and is getting more of the punishment now. But a small mistake by Flair sends him crashing into the turnbuckles after a Backlund push off. Backlund almost gets the win with a rolling cradle. Flair bails to the floor, grabs the title belt and walks around the ring. It looks like he’s trying to leave the ringside. Bob follows him out, and grabs Flair by the hair and tosses him back into the ring. As Backlund returns to the ring, Flair uses the belt against Backlund head to cause the DQ. Bob is bleeding now, Flair just poses in the ring, but as Backlund seems to shake it off and rise up, Flair bails with his title belt and runs toward the locker room. The crowd is hot at the finish, and applaud Backlund for his performance.

Time: 43:01

Decision: Bob Backlund, via DQ, Ric Flair retains the NWA World Championship

Given the match Andre was in and its position on the card, I don't think he could've put it in another slot. Andre's too big of a draw as a freelancer to book in an opener but he wasn't involved necessarily in a major match. So in this case, I think he put Andre in the best spot on the card he could've put him.
