Vote for the wrestler that you think had the better career in WWE (whether you base that on impact or match quality is your decision), from 1985 to 2005. Voting will end tomorrow morning at the latest. Please give the wrestler's name first and any explanation thereafter. Thanks.

Steve Austin.

As much as I love Bret, Austin's impact on the WWF was too big to be ignored. I tend to ignore anything Austin did post-2002, anyway.

Ignoring everything Austin did post-2002 is a convenient way of forgetting the biggest downside of his WWF career.

Do you go with the guy who carried the company into it's biggest era ever, or do you go with the guy who got him over enough to where he could do that in the first place ?

Austin drew so much more than Bret, and had some great matches, some of which were against Bret. Austin was strong on the mic, but I preferred Bret, as he was more of a wrestling promo guy than an entertainment promo guy, which is what Austin was to me, though that was a product of the environment he was in. And, to be honest, when I look back over their promo work, I think Bret was a lot better than Austin, and I really don't think Austin was as great as people thought, and I have to wonder whether people think he was good purely because he was something new and different, rather than because he actually was good.

The major thing I feel Bret has in his favor is a longer stint in the WWF, and he was able to do a lot more than Austin, even if it never reached the level of success Austin did. Not to mention that Austin's heel turn was, outside of the Invasion angle, probably the most badly botched idea in WWF history, as it in all likelihood ran off more fans than any one Katie Vick-esque angle ever has. Bret, even though he wasn't close to being the draw Austin was, when he was in the spotlight, was also never part of something that pretty much sent company business into a tailspin that it still hasn't fully recovered from.

Another factor is that Bret never refused to do a job because he was afraid of losing his spot. Sure, he might have changed a finish here and there, but that was always because the finish he was given made no sense at all. And when it came time to do the big job, he always did, even if in some cases he either didn't really want to or thinks it was a bad business decision that he felt he really should have stood up against. Austin's case with the job to Jericho have been recounted by Loss, but one that I don't think is too well known is that when Austin and Hunter dropped the tag belts to Benoit and Jericho, both Austin and Hunter had to be talked into it for much of the day of the show, because they didn't think Benoit or Jericho were at their level and worthy of the win. To me, that kind of thing is a big black mark, and it's ultimately a prime reason for my vote going with Bret, as well as the fact that I feel Bret was the superior in-ring worker, and a better overall talent.

Well, there was one case of him refusing to job...

Bret.

Longevity, longevity, longevity. Austin accomplished more in a far shorter period of time, but Bret turned in quality work for 12 or 13 years with the company, he made Owen and Austin, among others into stars and had to put up with a lot more bullshit than Austin. Look at what they did with Bret from 2/95-11/95, Hakushi, Lawler, Pierre, and Yankem, I can't beleive he went along with all that shit.

Is elaboration really needed?  I don't think we need another Montreal debate.

I'd actually forgotten about Montreal.

And he agreed to lose to the other guy in the end.
