BENOIT VS SMITH 6/24/88 ENGLISH Rounds This was the climax of the first series of matches between Benoit and Smith. 3 weeks later they had another match but you could tell from watching the TV shows that was never supposed to originally happen. As a general rule, I don't like English rounds in wrestling. They almost always are a detriment to a match because they wreck the flow of a match and stop the sympthany of a wrestler getting beaten up as he has a chance to recover. In saying that I must say 1 match that managed to use the Enlish rounds well was the Dynamite Kid vs Marty Jones from England These rounds are 5 minutes long with 1 minute rest periods. Benoit has Steve Blackman in his corner and Smith has the weasel. The first round starts off with Benoit dominating Smith with Smith vacating the ring after flurries of offence against Benoit. Really wicked exchanges as Smith would go behind Benoit, take him down to the mat amateur stlye - Benoit than sits out and turns -- Smith than grabs Benoit's legs -- Benoit rotates his body sideways causing Smith to flip on his back which is than proceeded by I believe an armdrag and a dropkick before Smith bails to the outside. Another highlight has Smith trying to monkey flip Benoit mid ring but Benoit does a cartwheel right beside him at full speed off of the ropes. Smith not to be outdone nips up a second afterwards but it's "all for naught" as Benoit once again nails him causing Smith to bail yet again. Smith is real good here at these beginning portions of the match. At first he's fighting pretty clean but once Benoit starts to get the best of him he'll start backing away in the corner, using the hair for an unfair advantage and than attacking right after backing away in the corner. Benoit largely dominates until around the 10 min mark where we have a real nice series of moves where Benoit ends up being dropped on his back which causes Smith to start attacking his ribs which along with Benoit's upper body becomes his main point of attack. Smith now is using full blown heel tatics. He does a real smart bit at the end of a round as he throws Benoit in an illegal move over the top rope to the cement floor letting himself rest up while at the same time not allowing Benoit to recover and lose some of his beat up sympthany from the fans. That though is an ecample where I think the round problem can play havoc on you in the ring. The 1 minute rest did take away the possability for a cool out of the ring into the ring counter possability. Also, at the end of the other round time is running out and they may have had to cut a hope spot for Benoit short. Back on track here Smith dominates for about 10 whole minutes and while this portion of the match was not as good as the excellent 6/4/88 match it is still very strong as Smith is that strong of a heel. Smith chokes Benoit like there's no tommorow, slaps him around while he's laying on the mat, takes 10 or so seconds to go back to his corner mid match and dry himself off with his towel, gives out a middle finger and just lets out this aura of complete arrogance with everything he does in the ring. But what I really like about Smith here is he doesn't cross the line into what I like to call a cartoon heel. There's no 10 punch in the corner, no going down with 1 punch all the time or no having your head rammed into the turnbuckle pad 10 times over. That is somthing that has always bothered me in wrestling and thankfully it doesn't happen here. In fact, with just a little bit of tweaking I would've loved to have seen Smith's heel charactor in All Japan. Smith repeatably attacks Benoit's midsection hitting some real nice offence like a military press into a stomach breaker and the absolute *best knee to the stomach off of the ropes that you will ever see in your life. When it's time for Smith to put Benoit away (which I think may have also have to been sped up because of the round style) he goes up for a top rope Vader Bomb splash on Benoit's ribs. The same splash he had beaten other wrestlers with successfully. He nails it but Benoit puts his foot on the ropes. Smith takes it off but Benoit puts it back on again. Benoit is not to be denied. Now this is a part of the match I talked about before. Smith slams Benoit in the middle of the ring and goes for a high range finisher for Stampede with a move that he didn't let out too much as a heel. The top rope flying splash which would surely be the end of the match if he hits it. But maybe the best part here is not the distance Smith gets on the splash but his complete and total arrogance adjusting his kneepads before going up to the top. Smith's all, "I got him. It's beyond over for that little snot nosed punk." Smith didn't defuse the seriousness of the situation by taking too much time but he did manage to beautifully show once again his cockiness getting the viewer against him all the more so the splash (Smith was pulling out the big stops) and the missing of it just means so, so much when you combine the fact that Smith was just nailing Benoit for 10 minutes straight and of course Smith's heelishness. It's almost impossable for someone to be cheering Smith at this point. Benoit's subsequent comeback after the splash is extreamly well done. He hits all sorts of sweet offence including a tremendous backwards top rope elbow drop from the top rope ala Tenyru. Benoit ends up going for it again but the weasel distracts Benoit and Smith in a super spot throws Benoit backwards into the middle of the ring getting the 1/2/3. Smith of course never forgetting who he is uses the tights big time for the win. The end is a huge rollercoaster ride where you find yoursef hoping Benoit will survive to hoping he will win to cursing for Johnny Smith and the weasel. This is done by letting out all the big moves as they stressed the importance of this climatic match. In saying that I must give props for Benoit and Smith for having the patience to make their first "final" match special. Smith's finisher was never used in any of thier 4 previous matches except for when Smith tried it once but Benoit got the knees up. Still he never made contact with it. This was the first time Benoit ever used the backwards top rope elbow which made it truly special. Smith only used the big splash once in the whole series. The finish was something they had never done before. All this made the match feel special. In conclusion, I absolutely love this match. The beginning is fantastic, the face/heel structure is very strong with Smith being so arrogant that you have to cheer against him, a long heel control segment which gets you behing Benoit and a super ending that was a fitting end to their first series of bouts. A real hard fought wrestling match is the feeling you get after watching this. * I wanted to talk about the knee. I don't know how Benoit and Smith do it but their knees to the stomach to each other off an Irish whip are heads and tails above everyone else I've seen do this manuever. So brutal looking. It must be exceptional timing because I have seen them miss the knee a couple of times.

The thing I remember most about this match was how shaky the cage was. Cheap. Yup, I agree. Really fun match.

I've heard bits and pieces about this and I thought I rememberd an interview from awhile back where HHH said "Benoit can be carried to a good match" when Benoit's name come back. I've also heard I believe Meltz say the Hunter was saying Benoit couldn't work in 2000. Do you know much about this? I've only seen part of this match. Wasn't the drop toehold a Benoit move at the time? He was taking some bumps off that in 99 WCW like when he wrestled Devon Storm on WCWSN. So you're saying here that top priority in WWE matches is to hit your signature spots all the time even if it's not good for the match and that HHH feels that's the best way to do the wrestling because the hitting of your sig spots puts you over. That's my #1 pet peeve in the WWE. You look at Tajiri who can do a lot of stuff in the ring (not picking on Tajiri here( and you know he HAS to hit the springboard back elbow, the Tarantula and the kick to the face in ever single match almost every time. Repeat for several other wrestlers. I think I know partly why they do this but it's just so repititive and predictable.

Benjamin vs Michaels was so good that I had to stay up for the replay and keep it on pernament tape which is something I hardly do in the WWE anymore (except Benoit matches of course). I loved the rollup sequence as it had so much merit here as that was how Benjamin beat Jericho the night before. Nice stuff. Michaels mostly staying in control until the end where Benjamin starts to pour it on until he gets caught by the veteran in one of the best looking finishers ever. From anywhere. Michaels was real good at the end too looking down at Benjamin just putting over what they went through. The nip up spot ruled. Benjamin's all "Yeah, I can do that too." Benoit vs HHH was also strong with Benoit putting on a really great performance legit scaring me with his concussion selling. The match was too short, got hurt by a commercial break and the ending was ruint by interference but besides that the work was really strong. I'm really looking forward to Benoit vs Kane next week since their last match on Raw was so great. That's going to be tough to beat but we'll see what happens.

Remember when Mankind said that Ross could make an okay match good and a good match great? He's correct but he can also make a great match okay and a good match bad. Ross back than as well would dog it during certain matches. And not just a little bit either. He did the commentary for the Canadian power hour up in Canada and he would have the most boring voice of all time which drug down matches so, so much. The only time he'd care if one of his favourites like the Steiner Brothers were on. That ends up creating a butterfly effect with the crowd that makes it harder for certain wrestlers to get up to the top of the card. Jesse Ventura is the best in the announcing booth.

About Undertaker's teardrop tatoo -- I'd have to take a look at it but I know a teardrop tatoo around the eye means that you've killed someone. I learnt that from Kung Fu The Legend Continues. Why does the WWF "refuse" to acknowledge Savage's history with them? Is that story about Savage and Stephanie have any merit at all? Something seeminly big had to happen betweem Savage and the WWF because Savage despite being a top name is never protrayed as such by the WWE.

Isn't that the case with the majority of Stampede matches? from what I have gathered, there aren't too many complete Stampede matches available anywhere. That's true but TSN was showing Stampede in 1987 and they would've showed more footage than this as I believ their show was 1 1/2 hours long while the show for other stations were shorter.

Johnny Smith/Phil Lafleur (the 2nd Dan Kroffat, name inspired by I believe Guy Lafleur the famous Montreal Canadians hockey player) vs Steve Disalvo/Hashimoto Stampede -- Sometime in 1987 Unfortunatley, I've only seen the short version of this but what I did see was very good. Smith and Lafleur are the faces while Disalvo and Hashimoto are the heels. We join the match with Smith playing face in peril. Smith is really good here and manages to hit some nice trademark Stampede stuff including a nice running dropkick off of the ropes. Not the way Perfect did it but kind of like the way Toyota would hit her dropkicks. He mangaes to make a tag but of course the reff doesn't see it. This is the 2nd time the reff misses it though so Kroffat is ticked off and hits a nice series of headbutts before the reff puts him back out. The heels manage to take advantage of the reff's blindness and Disalvo catches Smith in the Canadain backbreaker. Hashimoto than comes off of the ropes with a flying elbow that causes Smith to be powerbombed down to the mat for the 1/2/3. They didn't show much and we unfortunately didn't get to see Kroffat really wrestle but still what was shown was very good with an excellent double team finishing move. A little different than your usual match as well as we never do get to see that hot tag. So in the meantime and inbetween time this has been another edition of WP's Stampede wrestling thoughts. So has anyone besides me seen the 69 -71 Tiger Mask anime? I got the last 30 or so episodes from Lynch in raw Japenese and I must say I really enjoyed this show. This is a link to a Japenese/English site that I used to help me understand the shows. Great site! http://www4.airnet.ne.jp/pancra/tigre/ Yeah, and don't read what happens ahead of time if you ever do want to see what happens in the show. This is a quick analysis of the show in point form. The music is great. Animation isn't the best but they did a real good job with the "camera Work" or whatever you would call it in animation. A lot of the joy is seeing how they pull off stuff with the limited animation. A lot of the fights are terrific and are in fact the most physcology laden fights I've ever seen on the TV screen. The fights are also extreamly violent. The training has to be seen to be believed! Bridging underneath waterfalls! They use animation effectively to allow the wrestlers to do stuff you wouldn't see in real life but at the same time don't let it get too unrealistic. It works well. Real life wresters are in this. Baba, Brisco, Inoki and so on. You will also see wresters that were influenced from real life wrestlers. They were ahead of the time and after watching this I'm certain some of the "garbage" leagues got some death match ideas from here. This isn't just about wrestling but also about drama and all that other stuff. The show does seem to drag some at a few points but of course I starting watching when the show was about 70% done. Also, I was watching it without subs so that was a factor too. In case anyone's wondering, it's just not me who likes this. I've seen the show rated well in lists before and I haven't heard anything bad about it yet. The show seemed to be really big in Italy as well. There are big time mark out moments in this. Trust me! Check it out! What do you have to lose?

I've got a lot of controversial thoughts on matches because of the way I look at them. My brain works in funny ways. Some of the stuff I've gone through in life has also effected the way I look at matches. DK vs Tiger is overflowing with life and probably a match best viewed live. Misawa vs Kawada I'm a big fan of as well.

Statement: There is no such thing as a 100% accurate star rating or even anything that's a 70% accurate star rating for a wrestling match. So do you agree or disagree? Myself, I agree. Well actually for an indivudal person a star rating is accurate to him or her but to everyone? No way. For example Dynamite Kid vs Tiger Mask 4/83 is signifigantly better than Misawa vs Kawada from 6/94. Notice how I didn't say it's my favourite but that it's actually better. That's a statement that gets attention but you know what? It's 100% true. True to me and a few other people anyway but for a lot of people they will state that in no way shape or form is that accurate. They will say Misawa vs Kawada is better and there is no denying their match. Intentionally or not, the problem is that they say it is a better match for everyone. Well, they are right in a way. It is better for them and that's perfectly acceptable as long as they're being completely truthful but IT IS NOT better for say WP or whoever else digs in this example the DK vs Tiger match. For us, DK vs Tiger Mask is a higher star rating because of what it brings to the table and how it affects us in comparison to Misawa vs Kawada. That allows the viewer to give quite a bit of leeway in star ratings to either matches. If they want to give Misawa vs Kawada 4 stars than so be it. If they want to give Misawa vs Kawada 5 stars than so be it. The same goes for the Dynamite vs Tiger Mask match. Really, this is why we often get different star ratings for matches. If there was some magical match equation for star ratings than everybody would be coming up with the same rating but they don't. Bottom line is as long as someone's being truthful there is no such thing as a wrong star rating. Agree, disagree?

This is a match list for every Benoit match that you can possably see. It's not a matchlist of every single match he's ever wrestled but rather every match I know of that at one time or another has existed on video tape. There are going to be mistakes and there are no doubt going to be omissions. If someone wants to correct something feel free to do so and if someone knows about the existence of more matches feel free to speak up. The search for new Benoit matches never ends. Stampede dates are in most cases the "arena" dates and not the televison dates.
