  1. Fortunately for SMW's ability to run shows, Tony Atlas and ICW Dawna didn't incite riots in rural Kentucky in 1993
  2. The Trenton mayoral candidate mentioned went on to lose 86-8 to the incumbent Mayor of Trenton. As for Underground cage fights in Mexico: sounds like Emil wants it to be a "Found Footage" sort of promotion
  3. didn't Bix call into the occasional Tim Noel/Dean Rasmussen blogtalkradio episode? just thought of that when Bix said he never talked to Tim on the phone.
  4. You asking a NY Jet about steroids was rougher than the time I asked Rich Gannon about a QB controversy at a School Assembly when I was in 5th grade. That got me quoted in the local paper.
  5. these days, the heels would just steal the identities of the faces to make them seem like bad people or to jack up their credit ratings. Then the faces would just face them in the ring instead of taking them to court for fraud. But i'm sure there's some other legendary storylines that'd get messed up by the existence of cellphones.
  6. I think a "Four flat tires" angle is one obvious angles that couldn't be pulled off today due to the existence of cell phones.
  7. Just pondered the concept of Scott Steiner doing a match in a women's prison and setting off a riot
  8. hopefully Bernie or Trump can get more pro wrestling TV matches in our women's prisons. Gotta imagine the inmate population there was huge into 80s/early 90s Memphis.
  9. Would Shane vs the Undertaker be any more ridiculous if Stephanie and Vince controlled the Undertaker via an urn?
  10. I thought "gonna have sex" was a riff on Tank Abbott saying he dreamed he was "raped by Freddie Mercury" (Dan Severn). But that fight occurred after SMW. It just seems like a Tank Abbott line. As for the Gangstas and Smoky Mountain crowds in East TN/KY. Putting all possible caveats in this statement about deeper meanings, but there's a overlap of SMW cities and parts of the country where Obama lost by absurd margins in the May 2008 D primaries (and lost to literal nobodies in May 2012). TV coverage in 08 milked a segment or two out of people in Pikeville saying Obama would enslave white people. In theory, you could blame New Jack and the Gangstas gimmick for Obama's low popularity in Smoky Mountain Wrestling markets (not really, but you knew that).
  11. re: Muta/Flair... I wasn't a fan before 97.. but the Muta/Flair Starrcade 89 match seems like a concise representation of money being lighted on fire. Flair goes over in like 2 minutes!
  12. Regarding the Louisiana rant.. I have a parent that works in a capacity for an insurance company (in a tech role)... that company doesn't do business in Louisiana due to a mix of corruption and Louisana using the Napoleonic code for their state laws,
  13. Misc comments 1) Yes, Baba and Andre faced Land of the Giants. It may not be on YouTube at the moment. 2) In regards to stuff that does and doesn't get flagged. Let's just say that I know that some local promos may not get automatically flagged purely because it's not on the master tapes. Cough.
  14. One accusation about Peter McNeely is that his manager got into the ring at 89 seconds because somebody placed a big bet on the fight not going 90 seconds. Also, Golota's from Poland (thru Chicago), not Ireland. He didn't get DQed vs Tyson. Tyson TKOed Golota, but the result was thrown out after Tyson got dinged for marijuana after the fight.
  15. quick searching around Google helped me find that Bruce Pobanz ran for office in 2012. Bruce and his wife ran for separate positions ("posts") on the Brunswick-Glynn County Joint Water and Sewer Commission. Bruce finished 4th of 4 candidates with 5% (1299 votes). His wife finished 3rd of 10. If Bruce was actually a wrestler, you could add him to a list of wrestlers to run for office and lose (Eddie Gilbert, Lawler, Nikolai Volkoff)
  16. "The Beach. 1986. Tulsa" It checks out!
  17. the random collection of flags in the NWA World Championship Wrestling studio is something else. American flag? yeah. Canadian? sure. The Flag of Sri Lanka? Uhhhhh. Buy in bulk at the flag store?
  18. I ended up on Weird YouTube to find footage of Mitch Snow's finishing move (which seems like the mix of a judo throw and a powerslam). If you're unsure about weird YouTube, it's the videos cited in the JCP segment.
  19. I coulda sworn that I read that New Jack said "Two less of them to worry about" As for the 1980s Rock vs modern rock debate for the videos. Would 1970/80s rock be a worse soundtrack for a 1994 video than early 90s Country? Although I guess the odds of using STP and not having anybody tell their record label are better than getting away with using Brooks & Dunn. I'm not sure if there was any sort of law or norms for using real music for these things if you're only airing it on TV.
  20. for anybody confused about Kevin Nash making a run-in. I checked HistoryOfWWE and Master Blaster Steel was replacing Barry Windham. They had Mike Graham replacing Sid on a show a few days before that. If you want a candidate for "biggest drop-off between wrestler that didn't show and his replacement"
  21. Newsbank doesn't have any articles about primary voters talking about David Woods' ownership of Continental. Here's his mini-profile from the Dothan Eagle: Woods didn't win a single county. Placing 4th in Dothan and 2nd (and losing by 34%) in Montgomery. His father ran for office a bunch of times. Including for Governor of Alabama 3 times, the US House 3 times, Lt. Governor of Alabama once (made it to a runoff), President of the United States (obviously lost that primary in 1992), the US Senate 3 times (once in Alabama, twice in Nevada). So, at least 11 candidacies. That's the indirect story of how David Woods probably got some of the money to buy a wrestling promotion. Unrelated to David Woods: Zeus got $22K for that match vs Abdullah in Puerto Rico. Hell of a gig.
  22. 1) Just realized that David Woods is the David Woods who ran for Congress in 2008 (finished in 4th place and got 17% of the vote in the primary). Also, he's the son of Charles Woods (Dothan-based radio station owner/frequent candidate for office/War hero, probably known more for his kinda gruesome appearance [no hair, eyepatch, gray-ish skin color] because his bomber exploded on takeoff during World War II. It remarkable that he survived that in 1944, and lived for 60 more years). I had listened to shows like BTS that had mentioned David Woods and I only just now connected the dots. (One of my less conventional interests involves looking up old election results posted on state pages, state digital library pages, Archive.org, etc, so, occasionally people linked to wrestling actually run for offices and usually lose) 2) The Equalizer/Evad was last sighted as the Athletic Director at Dana College in Nebraska. 3) I'm not sure if my laptop speakers are about to be really messed up or if something on the Place To Be page messed with things, but I was listening to this episode on the PTBN page, I heard a crackling sound and then the volume dropped off. It dropped off because one of my laptop speakers didn't transmit sound. But once I closed the PTBN page, the sound comes back at it's usual quality. So I started listening to the show on Soundcloud and it has been flawless so far. My Acer laptop has several less than ideal traits these days (the tab button and 2 letter keys near tab don't work). It might just be a total local problem. Also, my Chrome insisted that the PTBN page was trying to load unverified scripts or something meriting a "Google Chrome shield icon" after the sound crackled out on PTBN. Not sure if Google's browser is trying to stop something being loaded from a Google ad or it's just some sort of temporary malicious ad that pops up on boards occasionally. But yeah, I'm probably the only guy whose experiencing this and it's working on Soundcloud. 4) some dude is uploading episodes of Kansas City Wrestling from 1984 on YouTube if you want to watch shitty wrestling. Basically the only guys that people older than me bring up in reference to Central States is Bulldog Bob Brown or maybe Rufus R. Jones. But, Central States isn't a blackhole of nothing available, just a blackhole of content!
  23. i'm guessing Hickerson used his time in Japan to do the concept work for the P.Y. Chu-Hi gimmick
