[1995-02-04-ECW-Double Tables] Chris Benoit vs Al Snow
Loss replied to Loss's topic in February 1995
I'm guessing you mean peak as a worker for Snow right? That's probably true. For his overall career though, it's hard to say his 'peak' was his main event run in ECW with head a few years later and his role as Foley's buddy after that. Yes, his peak as a worker. Not that his run as Foley's second is anything to point to as a peak of anything.- 12 replies

Ric Flair doing a Ric Flair promo while wearing eyeliner and nail polish is awfully creepy. Flair and Vader have Hogan cornered when suddenly, it's time for the ULTIMATE SURPRISE! Fake Ultimate Warrior music starts playing and Renegade comes out. They try to hide his face at first. Flair tries to throw a punch and he grabs Flair's wrist. Flair sells it like he has been touched by an angry God! Between the Jimmy Hart return, Renegade, Flair and Arn, this is a pretty overbooked main event. I guess we can still safely say WCW-era Hogan throws the worst chairshots in the business, but in 2011, that's not the same level of criticism that it was in 1995. Terrible finish having Flair do the job in a Hogan/Vader match, and somehow it counts. Post-match, a masked man comes out and hits Flair and Vader with a chair while Arn comes out all tied up and gagged. The masked man is Savage. This is pretty far from a good match, but it's an entertaining one (even partially for the right reasons), and give Flair credit for carrying all of this.

A woman with some amazing punches runs out of the crowd and starts beating up Savage. All the sudden we see the strut, and Flair takes off his wig. Ric Flair is one ugly woman. Hogan makes a quick save and Flair takes off. You'd think they could do more with Ric Flair in drag than a quick run-in. Flair exerts himself so much anytime he gets the chance to do something physical in an angle at this point that it's pretty obvious he's itching to have a match.

Savage hasn't been wrestling in WCW long enough to have a really good highlight video at this point. We get his pre-match promo, then cut to the finish of Savage/Avalanche.

Fun, 2-minute feature with Arn Anderson. This is weirdly produced, it almost feels like a political ad. Someone should mash this up with the video of the guy from Alabama from the last election cycle.

[1995-03-19-WCW-Uncensored] Dustin Rhodes vs Blacktop Bully (King of the Road)
Loss replied to Loss's topic in March 1995
This match has taken a beating, and I can see why it's not everyone's cup of tea, but this is about as good as a match in a moving vehicle filled with hay can be.- 8 replies

Douglas is swinging the Singapore cane and accidentally hits Cactus, the two have words and Douglas takes off briefly before coming back. Cactus and Funk take some great bumps in this, and at one point, they bury Cactus under the ringside guardrail. They brawl all over the building, and in a great spot, Funk went to pour the contents of a toolbox on Douglas and when the box opened, all the tools fell on his head and decommissioned him. Only Funk could make me buy that. Later in the match, Funk comes back and hits Cactus with a flaming branding iron and manages to brand Cactus with it until Douglas makes the save. All is for naught though, as Douglas gets distracted and Funk ends up piledriving Cactus on the flaming branding iron. Had that not been the finish, I would have HATED this match, but it was, so all is good. As Texas Tornado brawls go, this was pretty good. If this didn't take place in a promotion where wild brawls were so commonplace, it would stand out quite a bit more, but it's still better than I thought it would be.

Vader is in a squash with Flair in his corner at ringside. Evad Sullivan, who has been in the crowd for the entire episode, comes to save the jobber from a post-match attack. He tries to get Flair's attention and Flair sucker punches him and throws him in the ring. Vader demolishes him for a few minutes then Flair comes in to take a few shots also. Bobby Heenan finally comes down and asks Flair to calm down. Nick Bockwinkel is out as well and gets in a shouting match with Flair. Evad is carted out on a stretcher. This angle resulted in Vader getting stripped of the U.S. title. I really love Flair and Vader as a heel team. Good stuff.

[1995-03-18-WCW-Saturday Night] Steven Regal vs Bobby Eaton
Loss replied to Loss's topic in March 1995
I always loved how this played out. Regal gets the best of Eaton early on and Eaton ends up outwrestling him, so he immediately runs to ringside and offers to be Eaton's partner. "You would make a WOOOONNNNNderful partner."- 4 replies

[1995-03-18-SMW-TV] Jim Cornette, Tracy Smothers and The Undertaker
Loss replied to Loss's topic in March 1995
Paul Bearer said they normally wouldn't do Jim Cornette any favors, but when he explained the injustice that happened, they decided to help. -
New Jack is NOT HAPPY about the Undertaker coming in. He says he's not doing this match, saying his life isn't worth that much. Les points out that he has a contractual agreement and has to show up. The Gangstas respond by saying they have their own mystery person who is bigger than Mustafa and who is almost as big as Undertaker -- Killer Kyle.

[1995-03-18-SMW-TV] Jim Cornette, Tracy Smothers and The Undertaker
Loss replied to Loss's topic in March 1995
Cornette has signed a match for the Southern Boys and Bob Armstrong to team with a mystery partner and take on The Gangstas and D-Lo Brown at the Bluegrass Brawl, and Tracy is livid until Cornette reveals that the partner is The Undertaker! Taker and Paul Bearer send in a taped promo explaining things. I've always wanted to see Undertaker in SMW because I was curious how they'd reconcile the gimmick in this environment. -
Brian Christopher is about to have a match, but Dave Brown asks him to stop by for a few words first. Brian wants to know why when Dundee came out, everyone wanted to give him high-fives, but wouldn't do the same for Christopher. He talks about an upcoming match with a pole in each corner, each having an object in the top, and says Dundee will be too old to win a match like that. He makes a few more age jokes until Christopher comes out to take exception. Dundee puts him in his place, mentioning George Foreman and the Rolling Stones, but Brian says they're all washed up. He fakes Dundee out that Lawler is behind him, then sneak attacks Dundee and they brawl.
-
Dundee sends well wishes to his injured son after a recent cage match against Rich and Doug Gilbert. They talk about a match this coming Monday where a fan draws a name from a fish bowl and that's who challenges for the title. He then shifts gears to Brian Christopher: "I've been places you wouldn't be woken up in the morning, son." This is a fun interview tying a few angles together with a common thread. He speaks from the perspective of a veteran who has seen it all giving a warning to young guys.

[1995-03-17-CMLL] Sangre Chicana vs La Fiera (Hair vs Hair)
Loss replied to Loss's topic in March 1995
This appears to be clipped, which is probably why they're selling fatigue that doesn't seem to be justified considering how short the match is. There are some fun moments here, but it's hard to get a read on the match with what's shown, and the first two falls, which I think are shown in full, are too short to matter. -
[1995-03-17-JWP-Jazz & Soul] Mayumi Ozaki vs Dynamite Kansai (Street Fight)
Loss replied to Loss's topic in March 1995
As gimmick matches go, this is one of the better ones I've ever seen. I think what makes it work is that despite the fact that it's a total brawl, it has all the same ebb and flow of a great wrestling match. It's a Come As You Are streetfight, with Kansai looking awesome in fatigues. It's a little uncomfortably violent at times, but it feels more like a movie fight scene than a wrestling match because they milk the drama so much. Weapons are used gratuitously -- check out Kansai wrapping a chain around her boot for a high kick or Ozaki putting a dog collar on Kansai and running around ringside and purposely crashing her into the guardrai repeatedly -- and Ozaki is mostly dominant throughout this. There are a few spells where Kansai makes a high-energy comeback that doesn't last long, which to me are the best points of the match. Kansai's face looks terrible. They actually brawl all the way to the arena entrance and even outside before making their way back. What separates this from the ECW stuff is the intensity associated with the spots. Powerbombs and piledrivers on tables are something you'd see in a garbage promotion for sure, but it seems far less hokey here because they aren't treated as routine signature spots. This is an outpouring of hatred. That said, the finish of Ozaki getting a flash pin off of a powerbomb attempt was very ECW in how out of nowhere it was. They probably did a few too many nearfalls toward the end, but they did a great job of putting Ozaki over. Time for a booking question: Is it likely the decision had already been made to move the WWWA title to Kansai by this time? And by the same token, did they likely already know Toyota would beat her in December? If so, I don't understand why Ozaki went over when they didn't have time to make her a challenger. I realize I'm crossing promotions, so maybe it's something that JWP wouldn't have needed to consider. Was this the climax of the feud these two had been having for years? Is this considered their best match? It's definitely the best of the ones I've seen.- 13 replies

Dylan, I know you have mentioned WCW arguably had its best in-ring year in '94. Are there matches not listed here that you would personally recommend?

I have seen Fuerza Guerrera in many matches I have really enjoyed, and he's one of my favorite guys in wrestling, but this is probably his finest performance. The technicos all get their time in the sun, but I guess Fuerza/Octagon is really the defining rivalry of this match. Fuerza shows why I love him here -- he fakes getting low blowed and tries to trick the ref into disqualifying the technicos pretty early on. Later he hugs Rey and kisses him on the forehead, only to slap him immediately thereafter. And at one point he gets really feisty and ties Octagon to the ring ropes by the mask. He also more than holds his own working some complex, quickly paced sequences with Rey. Rey and Psicosis are both outstanding in this match. At one point, Rey does a somersault plancha into a rana on Psicosis! I guess '95 was really the peak of their feud. Santo/Panther do good things when they're in, but they are really background players. Another great moment saw the rudos doing the Michinoku Pro pose, only for Octagon to dropkick Psicosis to the floor. I still like Misterios vs Guerreras better, but this is the best match of the month to this point.

Everyone is really good in all of these, except surprisingly Terry Funk. Woman gives what is probably her best interview and both Douglas and Cactus are really strong. ECW really beat "WOMAN USED TO MANAGE BUSINESS AFFAIRS FOR THE FOUR HORSEMEN" to death, though.

The WWF's 70s-style presentation continues to amaze me. Here, Ernie Ladd talks about how tough the transition is from football to wrestling and suggests different strategies for Taylor. This is not the WWF I know at all.

[1995-03-13-NJPW-Muscle Storm] Wild Pegasus vs Koji Kanemoto
Loss replied to Loss's topic in March 1995
Well this was really great. I hate to say it and it's not something I want to go on about, but based on what I've seen from everyone in 1995 so far, Benoit really does look like the best wrestler in the world at this point. Here, Kanemoto is capable but probably not at his best yet, but Benoit carries him to a really strong match. The matwork spanning the first half of the match is tremendous all around, with Benoit focusing most of his effort on Kanemoto's back. There aren't a lot of huge highspots in this which is what it makes it work better in some ways. They do a few sequences where one guy will miss a move the first time and then hit it later when he tries again after wearing down the other more. I have to say I haven't seen that finish ever. Imagine a top rope rana, but instead of it being a headscissors, it's a bodyscissors. Kanemoto wins a tremendous one. On par with the Misawa/Kobashi vs Doc/Ace match without taking up nearly as much time. -
[1995-03-11-WCW-Saturday Night] Steven Regal and Bobby Eaton
Loss replied to Loss's topic in March 1995
Regal teases apologizing for embarrassing Bobby Eaton last week, but quickly turns direction. The crowd seems to be booing on cue, but I don't think he's mic'd in the arena. Bobby Eaton is back out and Regal tells him he wouldn't let him clean out his horse stable, much less be his partner. Eaton is dressed AWESOMELY. They end up making a match for next week! I always LOVED how the Blue Bloods formed.- 7 replies

[1995-03-11-USWA-TV] Jerry Lawler vs Bill Dundee vs Brian Christopher
Loss replied to Loss's topic in March 1995
This is just back-to-back matches, not really a triple threat match. Just as Lawler pulls the strap down to make his comeback, we get a ref bump. Christopher brings out the chain and pins Lawler. Next is Lawler vs Dundee, with Dundee in an awesome blue leopard singlet. Lawler pins Dundee with a quick rollup in less than two minutes. Finals of the first round is Dundee vs Christopher. Dundee wins after a top rope legdrop. Next round is Lawler vs Christopher again. A ref bump again too. Christopher goes for his chain again, but it's missing. He finally finds it in his kneepad, but Lawler ducks and lands a piledriver. The ref comes to just as that happens so Lawler is DQ'd. Dundee vs Christopher is the finals. A THIRD ref bump. Dundee hits Christopher with a bullwhip to take the whole thing. Post-match, Christopher comes back with the bullwhip and smacks the hell out of Dundee.
