[1992-08-01-SMW-TV] Interview: Jim Cornette & Heavenly Bodies
Loss replied to Loss's topic in August 1992
Cornette has the perfect segues. He asks if a tomato is a fruit or vegetable, then says if the Fantastics are tomatoes, they are fruits that will be turned into vegetables. Then he pulls a tomato out of a paper bag and slices it against the barbed wire Pritchard is holding to make his point. Good promo. -
[1992-08-01-USWA-TV] Jerry Lawler & Jeff Jarrett vs The Moondogs
Loss replied to Loss's topic in August 1992
Lawler and Jarrett regain the USWA tag titles. Tremendous nearfall gets us started. Then, we see Richard Lee getting his head shaved. Lee comes back with the Agassi hat and vows revenge, saying something about bringing in Fifi, the sister of the Moondogs (not Ric Flair's maid). -
Next will be '95, then from there on, we will release the remaining years of the 90s chronologically. So yes, those will be the last three yearbooks we do.
-
The Liger/Otani stuff will be covered very well.
-
Undertaker's Dead Ref outfit would also probably be pretty funny.
-
If they did Ref In Peace posters, it would be worth it.

My hopes were sky high for this one. It was a fun match, but not at the level I hoped considering who was involved. Casas is his usual awesome self though, especially in spots where he gets frustrated with the flash of Ultimo and tries to outdo him to unfortunate results. There is one spot where Ultimo jumps off the top and Negro and Salvaje are supposed to catch him and they accidentally drop him, which messes up a sequence, but they recover nicely. I'd easily rank this ahead of the AAA trios on this set that happened on the same day, warts and all. The finishes to each fall were all really good.

I like Rey and Psicosis, but don't really care for pretty much everyone else they worked with during these matches most of the time. And even in the case of Rey, he was great flyer pretty early, but I don't think he really put it all together and became a great wrestler for a few more years. The young guys are also outclassed when watched alongside guys like Santo, Casas, Dandy, Emilio, Atlantis, Lizmark, Pirata, Satanico, etc. There are some AAA matches I still like, but most of them end up disappointing me now. Whoever first described AAA as sports entertainment lucha libre was pretty accurate -- often times overbooked and a little more superficial than the best stuff from CMLL.

They have MADE IT TO THE BIG TIME of the NAWA -- Boston Bad Boy (Tony Rumble) and Tazmaniac, whose gimmick is pretty hilarious at this point.

Plenty of action, but AAA just doesn't hold up well at all for me. It's my least favorite major promotion to be featured on these yearbooks. That said, this is interesting to watch because these guys were definitely a new breed. They aren't as fluid as they would be by February when five of these guys were in a couple of really good trios matches, but it's interesting to see what they were doing a few months before really catching fire.

Had trouble really getting into this. Interesting glimpse of where Taue was at this time and a solid match, but not much more than that.

Good match, but a little on the long side. I like seeing Sasaki slowly mixed in with the other guys, but he's not quite ready for long matches at this level, even though he does try hard. Good to see Hashimoto in his first match in a while on here. I'm pumped for the G1.

Dream match.

I wouldn't say Chono makes easy work of Koshinaka, but he's definitely more dominant than I expected. Koshinaka, by the way, looks completely different with a shaved head -- almost like Bad News Allen in karate pants. He jumps Chono at the bell and pays for it throughout this match, bleeding a gusher and taking a hell of a beating. Chono refuses to let sleeping dogs life after the bell and half the heavies end up in the ring pulling apart Chono from ... Kengo Kimura??? Really? Okay. Really good match.

I talked to Dan Ginnetty just a moment ago, and learned something new. In 1997, All Japan had: * The 30-minute NTV show weekly, which I knew * A 1:25 show on Samurai TV, weekly, which I knew * A 60-minute NTV satellite show which featured different footage, which was news to me Was anyone aware of this? Does anyone know what Dave watched at the time that he talked about in the WON? Has anyone ever gone through this stuff and tried to separate the good from the bad? If not, we'll use the '97 Yearbook to do it, but I was curious if anyone else had already done some of the leg work. It might save me a little time.

I really enjoyed this. Is this potentially Ishikawa's first ever great match? I like him as the young guy with the spunk. Really hot start with all the slaps is great fun, as is the moment where the ref checks Ishikawa's teeth and nose to make sure everything is intact. Nice stuff.

John Cena would improve his workrate if he would add to his five moves of doom and let his heel persona shine through.

Definitely a great month. I'm enjoying reading your thoughts, by the way.

Probably just because it was one of the biggest angles of '81. I'm blanking on what other famous angles took place in 1981. Flair won the title, but it was in a town where he wasn't strong and the win was kind of an afterthought. Maybe a Race/Rhodes title change or Tommy Rich's moment in the sun?

Lane is now wearing his stupid head gear to keep his toupee on.
