Booker T shows some good promise here, but overall, a pretty lousy War Games during a bad time period for WCW. Winning War Games with a bearhug?

One of those feuds that seems like it might work really well on paper that is just a total mismatch. Rude wins the NWA title (I think it was the WCW International World title by this point) in the third title change on this show.

The recap Cactus's entire 1993, which just made it obvious how much WCW fumbled this angle. Cactus does a good promo to wrap things up.

[1993-09-19-WCW-Fall Brawl] Nasty Boys vs Arn Anderson & Paul Roma

Last few minutes. Nastys win the tag titles. Looked to be a better match than Steamboat/Regal, but still nothing special.- 9 replies

[1993-09-19-WCW-Fall Brawl] Ricky Steamboat vs Steven Regal

Last few minutes of a title change from Fall Brawl. Regal wins the TV title in what looked to be pretty disappointing.- 12 replies

Why did anyone ever like Joey Styles? He's more preoccupied with being clever than calling the match. He also repeated the line about messing up his suit at least 3 times. Anyway, not really my thing, but a fun, crazy brawl, and you can see how considering how much more the crowd was into stuff like this than traditional indy stuff, they got the inspiration for what ECW would become.

Wild match, just as you'd expect. Don't really have much to say about it, except that Sullivan's turn on Abby surprised me.

[1993-09-18-ECW-Ultra Clash] J.T. Smith vs Dark Patriot (Scaffold)
Loss replied to Loss's topic in September 1993
Smith takes a quick, crazy bump knee-first off the scaffold. Dark Patriot continues to beat him up for several minutes afterward all over the arena. Kind of a precursor to the style ECW would become known for.- 5 replies

Sherri is coming to the Parade of Champions! Sherri isn't a good interview, but this is really high-energy and putting her at ringside to counteract Tammy in an upcoming Smothers vs Lee match is a pretty cool way to use her.

[1993-09-18-SMW-TV] Interview: Jim Cornette / Terry Funk vs Bob Armstrong
Loss replied to Loss's topic in September 1993
Cornette is the new commissioner of SMW and is beside himself! Dutch Mantel is in a tux, presumably to celebrate the occasion. They cut to Funk vs Armstrong joined progress. Lots of good punch selling and tons of attempted, but failed interference. Funk and Cornette gloat after the match.- 7 replies

Joined in progress from Mid South Coliseum. Tatanka seems to be living it up as a heel and this is pretty heated for Lawler's comeback. Tatanka wins the Unified title. (They showed the end of the match later in the broadcast after Vince's interview.) Tatanka enters the studio with belt in hand to do a promo. Lawler is out after a couple of minutes and after a few minutes of bargaining, ends up getting Tatanka to agree to a Mid South Coliseum Survivor Series-style match with the top babyfaces and heels with all the top titles at stake. That's a pretty interesting idea for a Monday night match and I'm curious how it drew. The studio crowd is really, really into all of this.

Joined in progress from Mid South Coliseum, 20 minutes in. After a ref bump, Rich pulls out a chain, which Jarrett gets away from him and then pins him. Paul Neighbors points out what happened, the ref finds the chain, the match gets restarted and Rich gets a three count even though the ref doesn't see his foot under the bottom rope. Wish we could have seen more of the match itself. Rich comes out to do an interview, and it's a pretty good one. Jarrett comes out to try to get to Rich, but all the babyfaces are holding him back.

[1993-09-18-WWF-Superstars] Shawn Michaels, Diesel and the 1-2-3 Kid
Loss replied to Loss's topic in September 1993
A fan keeps putting his hand on Shawn, who is leaving from his last match. He and Diesel are bullying the fan and the 1-2-3 Kid is due for a match, so he comes out. Shawn and Diesel refuse to let him walk by and beat him up. Mr. Perfect makes a quick save. -
[1993-09-13-WWF-Raw] Rick & Scott Steiner vs The Quebecers
Loss replied to Loss's topic in September 1993
I suspect Providence of Quebec rules were Vince making fun of the territories in as many ways as possible: (1) No jumping off the top rope (2) No piledrivers (3) No throwing an opponent over the top rope (4) Title changes hands on a countout (5) Title changes hands on a DQ You also catch Vince jumping on Heenan for using a pronoun on commentary. Also appears to be the debut of Johnny Polo, and one of the best wrestling outfits ever: We Are The Quebecers Jacques And Pierre And I Am Johnny! The Quebecers have some fun double-team spots. I love it when teammates perform wrestling moves on their tag team partners but land on the other guy. I love the heavy focus on the rules here. The ref refuses to count a fall because the legal man isn't in the ring. With all the cool Quebecers offense, heated crowd, getting over the gimmick and nice hot tag build, this is one of the better Steiners matches, believe it or not, and I'd probably rank it decently in an all time WWF/E poll. I also really loved the nature of the screwy finish, because it's the only way I think anyone would have believed the Quebecers taking the titles. Great stuff! The title change is put over as a really big, tragic deal and I even enjoyed the gloating post-match promo. -
[1993-09-12-WWF-All American Wrestling] 1-2-3 Kid vs Marty Jannetty
Loss replied to Loss's topic in September 1993
They packed a lot of action in a pretty short period of time, had a nice build, and had some beautiful exchanges. Feels like a tournament semi-final. I wish the finish had been a pinfall, that would have been the cherry on top, but this was a very fun match. -
Nash wanted to show that no matter what they put in the first hour of Nitro, they were going to get the exact same rating. If I remember correctly, he was wrong.

Flair's biggest win of '93 aside from Starrcade was taking the NWA title from Windham. He did that with a figure four in the middle of the ring. That's a pretty forgettable match, though, so I understand the oversight. I liked this match, but I do agree with Ditch's general point about Chono. His style isn't really that much different from the good American heavyweights at the time, and he would have blended well with them. Tenryu's best matches are against guys who can be a little more aggressive. Chono didn't have his mean streak yet. Did heel Chono against Tenryu ever happen? I suspect it would have been awesome. Tenryu's timing is second to none. Cutting off Chono's top rope dive with a chop was awesome. Even if the drama was lacking for the rope reaching stuff, the angles at which he's able to apply the STF are pretty cool. Also, any match where you can't hear Chono doing his weird breathing thing is a nice relief. In terms of their respective places on the card at this point, this seemed to have exactly the right amount of build to a finish that it should have. The post-match stuff with Hase going crazy rocks and helps set up their match later on this disc.

[1993-09-11-WCW-Saturday NIght] Rick Rude vs Dustin Rhodes
Loss replied to Loss's topic in September 1993
Rude was pretty done by this point, but this is super heated in the last few minutes. Flair does color commentary. After a ref bump, he grabs a chair, but Flair intervenes and takes the chair. This leaves Rude prone to a quick schoolboy, Dustin wins the U.S. title, and Center Stage ERUPTS. Seriously, it's an insane pop.- 6 replies

[1993-09-11-WCW-Saturday Night] Interview: The Shockmaster
Loss replied to Loss's topic in September 1993
Tony Schiavone interviews a clumsy Shockmaster at a local restaurant. He spills his water on Schiavone at the end of the interview. Nice attempt by Dusty to salvage the gimmick. I guess they didn't have a choice.- 7 replies
