  1. This is awesome! Kanemura is about to be interviewed when Sullivan blindsides him and just destroys him. The crowd is a mixture of laughter and horror. Kanemura never even gets in a shot and is a bloody mess. Sullivan ends up pulling out his spike for the DQ and just starts stabbing him with it as they put a big red x on the screen to try to censor this stuff. Dutch Mantell repeatedly calling Kanemura Kimura is humorous too.
  2. This is a great, fired up promo from Gilbert about Bert Prentice and the Rock & Roll Phantom. He also mentions that he's sick of being overlooked for title shots.
  3. Forget MOTYC, this is a match of the decade contender. It's no secret that Negro Casas is one of the greatest wrestlers of all time. But I thought that even before seeing this match. After this match, it's only more the case. This is a tremendous mix of styles. The matwork is spectacular from both guys, and Ultimo mostly wrestles the Mexican style, but occasionally mixes in some Japanese stuff, like when he wins the first fall with a German suplex/bridge combo. The second fall is mostly Casas working over Ultimo's back to build to a scorpion deathlock submission. He does some nice stuff, and even sneaks in a low blow on Ultimo between falls. The third fall is a series of close calls and some great dives and bumps from both guys. The layout and offense and all of that is tremendous, but what elevates this from a great match to a classic one is Negro's performance, specifically in adding little touches to the matwork, progressing his bumps as the match goes on and creating genuine doubt over the outcome in the final fall, which Dragon finally wins with a tiger suplex. A career match for Ultimo Dragon (who had a hell of a month) and not too far behind the best of Casas, if it is in fact behind at all.
  4. Wait, does Dave think those commercials only aired during wrestling shows?

    Gay jokes

I am stunned that WWE apologized for anything. Ever.
  6. Sting had already fulfilled every wrestling date requirement on his contract, but still had time left on his contract. So they couldn't use him in the ring anymore, even though he was still under contract, so this is what they came up with to write him out. He took time off to fix his marriage after Halloween Havoc '98.
  7. Last few minutes of a handheld. Sting had won the world title from Vader six days earlier on this tour, and now Sting was defending. The last few minutes look really good, as is usually the case for these two. Sting has the match in hand until the ref gets bumped and Harley Race moves Vader out of the way of a Stinger splash. Vader then pins Sting with the powerbomb to regain the title.
  8. Nice glimpse of where Michinoku Pro would start. I don't really have much to say about this beyond that, but this is a fun match.
  9. Not much of a match, but there's a FOOD FIGHT at the end, which makes it all worth it. Sags squirts Samu in the face with mustard to block a chairshot!
  10. JYD does a promo wearing a neckbrace about how embarrassed he is after being attacked by Zhukov, "or whatever you wanna call your name". Somehow, this was an attack on all of those kids at the Dothan Boys Club, which is a bit of a stretch.
  11. Finally, a match where I can see what all the fuss was about in 1993 for AAA. I've always been a huge Psicosis supporter, and La Parka's presence in this match just demonstrates how the presence of another rudo at his level motivates him to give an even greater performance. The sneaking in of low blows and such has never really been a Psicosis thing, but he pulls out some great schtick like that. The falls are paced really well. Rey and Psicosis seem to be building a rivalry that might last a few years or something, as they have a lot of interaction, as do Rey and Metal. Misterioso and Volador work with both La Parka and Psicosis quite a bit, and I'm not entirely sure what purpose Metal serves other than to set up spots, but he does a fine job of that. Parka's mask starts giving him trouble toward the finish, but that doesn't stop him from doing one of the best dives of all time. Psicosis scores the win for his team in the end, which is always cool.
  12. I haven't seen much Ohara, but I would guess he gives the performance of his life here. His face is a bloody mess, but even before that, he looks explosive and fits into the match really well. It's a '93 Hashimoto match, of course it's awesome, but it's interesting how each of these main events has its own distinct charm that makes it memorable. For this one, it's the way they isolated and destroyed Ohara, but not before putting him over really strong. I also admire how Hashimoto hasn't been in the ring for several minutes while Ohara is being pummeled, but he's still selling the after-effects of the onslaught from Hara and Fuyuki (another guy who looks really good in this match). I love all the rollup finishes on this set, as Hash and Ohara take the win after Hashimoto kicks Hara right in the face, then rolls him with an inside cradle. I keep expecting the match quality to drop off in this series, but it has yet to happen. Yet another awesome match.
  13. Brutal spectacle of a match. I don't think I had seen Kobayashi post-80s before. Kitahara wins by countout. Really blends in for me in some ways because of all the great NJ/WAR matches on this set that are wrestled in the same style, but good nonetheless.
  14. I'm not sure why these two chose to have a match this good on a small show that never even got released commercially, but they did, and it's awesome that someone in the audience had a camcorder to capture the match. This is worth going out of your way to see. Not only is it a MOTYC, it's probably as good as anything either guy has ever done. I'm going to put this in the "watch again" pile before doing my top 100 matches of the year, but it's outstanding. The match isn't laid out much different than most juniors matches -- feeling out --> matwork --> highspots --> nearfalls -- but everything is executed so well, especially the final stretch. Outside of that, everything building up to it is really good too. Ultimo finally catches Samurai in a quick rollup pin after a series of cradles and reversals.

  16. JYD has been hospitalized and is undergoing therapy. They show a clip of him visiting the Dothan Boys Club, then he comes out for a promo and he is presented with a "Big Brother Award" for being such a great hero to young people. Then they show a clip of him winning a match the previous week, but after the match Boris Zhukov attacks him with a piledriver on the floor.
  17. Dutch Mantell is just SOOOO good, probably the best announcer in wrestling in 1993. Excellent, double-juice match with a great finish. It's mostly brawling, but they sell it well enough and the camerawork and announcing is good enough that there's a lot of drama. For the finish, Ron Wright gets out of his wheelchair when the ref is distracted and hits Smothers with some type of foreign object, leading to a DWB pin. Really good, my favorite SMW match so far.
  18. Selling is the absolute most important quality in pro wrestling matches. It is light years more important than anything else in wrestling. Selling is what turns an athletic exhibition into a wrestling match. Selling (or the lack thereof) always stands out because when it's not done properly, it's incredibly noticeable. You can't get anything over in wrestling if you don't sell it. To RE's point, selling indeed doesn't just mean showing pain or laying there for "x" amount of time. It means that moves have consequences.
  19. There is no way in hell that I would be up for dealing with goodhelmet if I banned RE.
  20. Kevin Sullivan's therapy sessions are now being paid for by SMW. Here, he is on the beach talking about that, then starts chasing seagulls with some sharp object.
  21. First, we get footage from The Omni on 2/7 with Douglas getting a knee injury post-match. Tony and Jesse are terrible here and would rather talk about anything but the match. But the match is really good, on par with the best Steamboat/Douglas tags. Austin and Pillman get the win when Pillman pins Bagwell. Scorpio had so much fun offense and really all four of these guys (except maybe Bagwell) should have been pushed a little harder.
  22. Austin and Pillman work over Douglas's knee early, and Steamboat and Douglas target Pillman's arm in a big way. Douglas sells the knee injury even while on the apron, which is nice. But then tracking issues get out of control and make this really hard to watch, so I have to skip a few minutes. Skipping or not, the heat isn't where it has been for their previous matches, and it's not as good as their other matches together. Douglas pins Austin after a roll-up.
  23. Bret's pronunciation of Yokozuna is great. This Yo Kazuna guy seems to be on a rampage heading to his Wrestlemania main event.
  24. Duggan shows that if used the right way, he has a lot to offer, as this is a really strong promo. Duggan feels like he let his fans and country down by letting his guard down and opening the door for Yokozuna to attack him, and for that, he's sorry.
  25. USWA has a middleweight title? Apparently so, JC Ice is the champ. JC shows a funny newspaper clip of Chelsea Clinton asking to see a PG-13 movie after her birthday, which is just read as her asking to see PG-13. He then says to Cory Maclin, "How ya doin', my Oreo brother?" Wow.
