  1. I kinda like it when Brody occupies your attention, because it gives Flair a bit of a break.
  2. Thanks. This has actually been ongoing for about two years, so every time I watch something, I just add it. I have no idea what my top ten matches would be. I feel pretty good about most of this, but everything here is totally based on a first impression, and I may not like some stuff after rewatching it. It's also hard to limit it to just ten. I think my favorite match and maybe the greatest match I've ever seen is MS-1 v Sangre Chicana from '83. I'm nowhere near doing this at this point, but at some point when I've watched the majority of what I want to watch, I'll probably do a big list of the top 1000 matches ever with reviews included, or something else equally contentious, without separating by year.
  3. Still plan on responding, but I am in the middle of buying a home at the moment and it's taking a lot of my time. The main point I want to make regarding Cage of Death now, while I have time, is that I agree that it was a great match, but the cage was ultimately meaningless. Danielson left on his own free will. Joe was injured and taken out. Homicide entered halfway through on his own free will. The whole point of War Games (or COD, as the case may be) has always been to keep other people from getting in or out. The 6-man was more of an unsanctioned all-over-the-arena brawl that seemed to fit what it was trying to accomplish more.

  5. Whether they get rid of it or not, I do think they should get rid of the impromptu nature of it. They don't even have to declare that wrestlers can't just use it on the spur of the moment, but just having the winner set a date in advance for when they want the title shot is far better use of the stip. The whole point of putting the world title on a guy is because you want him to draw and to do so, he needs to be perceived as strong. What good does it do someone to win the title on a fluke, or under those type of circumstances?
  6. Kind of an offshoot of what was being discussed with complaints about this not being the original ECW, but I really, really hate Money In The Bank as an annual thing, mainly because after *every single TV show*, you have people bitching about Kennedy not cashing in. And these people go on and on for a year. It's weird that people seem so into the idea of making the World title like the 24/7 hardcore title, which was a comedic midcard belt. How come people seem to think the way to go with it is to have the challenger just show up after another match, instead of setting forth a challenge on a specific date so it can be hyped up? Should world title matches really be impromptu, even if it is a sneaky heel trying to get the belt?
  7. I think Vince with a stable of cartoonish WWF gimmick guys from the past (or developmental guys playing those same parts) going against ECW originals could be fun. Imagine Vince making a main event on ECW TV of Doink the Clown against The Goon while the Originals are forced to watch and are unable to do anything about it.
  8. The Observer isn't really calculated enough to "market" anything. It's obvious everything Keller does is planned and structured, but I always got the feeling from Meltzer that he just wants to write a lot about wrestling and hopefully make money doing it. I never feel like I'm being peddled, because he interacts with people regularly who don't even subscribe to his newsletter.
  9. John, both are guilty of this, but between Meltzer and Keller, who do you think shows the most favoritism to their sources? I'm curious your opinion.
  10. This ECW is NOT going to be like the original version. THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH FANS TO SUPPORT THAT VERSION OF ECW. ECW WENT OUT OF BUSINESS. It's going to be a WWE show with WWE booking and WWE stars. GET OVER IT. Sorry, had to get that off my chest. Vince winning the ECW title has people making doomsday predictions and talking about how it will destroy the company in various places, which humors me because WWE is a company that has done far worse things in the past five years that haven't killed them, so why would this? Also, Cena winning was perfect in setting up a rematch with Michaels. People who in one breath are buying PPVs to see him lose and are unable to understand why he's holding the title forever in the other breath don't realize how foolish they seem. I also thought the booking last night for most of the matches was spot on. MVP loses again? Awesome. It should take new guys a long time to beat former world champions, and he's being so protected in losing that I think he's getting far more out of it than he would have had he won. Hardyz going over and staying champs until they've built up a new team that people perceive as stars is also a good move. Most of the top programs appear to have some steam right now, so I like that they're letting them keep going as long as the feud has interest, instead of killing them prematurely in the interest of moving on. This good will toward WWE will probably end when HHH comes back and starts beating everyone, but right now, they appear to be on quite the roll.
  11. PWI had their 100th issue in 1987 and they did some type of precursor to the PWI 500 there where they ranked guys. Maybe that's what you're thinking of. Pretty sure it was the 9/87 issue, but can't confirm.
  12. Ok, if you have no interest in watching the match because it "sounds horrible", that's fine, but please stop posting in this topic if you have nothing to add.
  13. The Black Scorpion, perhaps?
  14. People are still divided. But I'm not sure what more Cena can do to get people to his side. The crowd that wants him to use a Death Valley Driver instead of the F-U, switch to wrestling tights and turn heel are crazy.
  15. Also, exactly how long did the match go? Some are saying 25-30 minutes, some are saying 35-40 minutes, some are saying 45 minutes, some are saying 50 minutes, some are saying 57 minutes, some are saying a full 60 minutes.
  16. You can't hate on a match without watching it. Whether it sounds too long or not, it's unfair to go into it with preconceived notions. Then you're going to be looking for things to not like about it and end up fulfilling your own prophecy and hating it anyway. It may be an overreaction. It may not be an overreaction. I'll probably watch it tonight.
  17. On that note, is Lex Luger the only guy to ever get a pre-emptive WON obit? Just curious, because he basically used Liz's bio to write about Luger as well, and I don't think he's ever done that for anyone else.
  18. He does it all the time, mainly for Clique guys. Sean Waltman got a free pass for years. There's also the weird Jericho hate.
  19. Why does it matter? Putting on such a long match is a great way to hype Backlash, although sadly, they probably can't find a way to outdo themselves when they're asking people to pay. I haven't watched it yet, but from reading about it, I'm pretty excited. I really like that they hyped other matches they didn't have time to show. Much better format than having Ironman stips, and the ratings for this will be interesting.
  20. Wade Keller is just clearly a case of a guy being in the right place at the right time, which allowed him to have a successful newsletter for 20 years. I was shocked recently when he had his meltdown where he talked about his future and went on a nonsensical tirade reminiscent of a Ric Flair promo on Nitro when he was put in the mental institution. I wasn't shocked because of his meltdown, but I was shocked because he's a young guy -- 34 or 35 years old, IIRC, which means when he started the Torch in 1987, he was still in high school. He's given his entire life to this, so his delusion and insanity makes a bit more sense. MMA getting over strongly in the US has really made the newsletter crowd collectively insane. Randy Orton was sent home from a tour of Europe last week. In the past, Meltzer may have probed to get more information, but acted as if he couldn't be bothered to care in recent daily updates on his site, choosing to focus instead on obscure UFC and Pride stories that have no importance, and better yet, have nothing to do with pro wrestling. He's obviously falling out of love with the worked stuff. Keller has taken Meltzer's famed Lessons of 2006 and LSD to create his current views on wrestling. MVP's ability to work a headlock properly has caused him to fall off the deep end. I know it's not often you see matwork sold properly anymore, but is it really that foreign a concept in modern wrestling? I really think Keller (and to a lesser degree, Meltzer) need to get some air. I've always been impressed by Meltzer's ability to somewhat maintain his sanity considering that he covers an industry that tends to destroy people, but obviously, Keller doesn't have quite that strength. We're at the point where a new generation of wrestling reporters is really needed. Right now, we basically have the equivalent of WWE building around Ric Flair and Hulk Hogan.
  21. I haven't forgotten about this, I've just been swamped at work the past couple of weeks in a new position where I'm having to learn a lot of new things. As soon as things calm down, I'll give this the attention it deserves. Hopefully, I can do some this weekend and also respond to some of Phil's points. (And the Keller thread ...)
