While I absolutely see the logic in keeping him a babyface, I'm also not sure about Make-A-Wish. I think we are long past the point where Cena would have to live his gimmick and wouldn't be able to do charity because he's a heel and supposed to be a bad person in real life. Why doesn't that logic apply to HHH and Stephanie? The merchandise argument is a strong one in favor of keeping him babyface, but I dispute the idea that he can't do charity. Even Hogan did charity and public appearances from 1996-1998. He made kids' movies during that time and even was part of some activist group against companies testing their products on animals.

Last few minutes of a super heated main event, which ends in a DQ when Hogan brings in the world title and attacks everyone with it. Hogan and Giant are working over Nash when Sting descends from the rafters. He takes off his trench coat to reveal an NWO black and white t-shirt. when Hogan lets his guard down, he eats a clothesline. Then Giant gets bodyslammed before Sting reveals a Wolfpac shirt underneath. This worked in the moment based on the pop it got, but why was Sting in the rafters for a year again? Who was he protesting anyway? He's now in a group led by a guy who orchestrated the whole fake Sting thing. The announcers are treating this as a great moment. Yuck.

This was great when Benoit was on offense, but Booker was a little too chinlock happy, so this isn't at the level of matches two and three in the series. Still a good match though.

Chris Jericho goes to Washington! He's at Capitol Hill in a suit and walks around Washington holding up a Conspiracy Victim sign. He explains to a homeless person the nefarious circumstances under which he lost the cruiserweight title. He ends up finding an NWA rulebook at the Library of Congress! Jericho at this point is way too good to be doing what he's doing. DX is doing similar stuff with the full backing of the WWF machine and it's getting over huge, while Jericho is pretty much carrying a midcard feud on his own by throwing out ideas. It's great that he got the freedom to do it, but it's sad, because he's exactly the type of guy WCW needed to be pushing hard. Instead, the focus is on 80s stars and 40-somethings throwing gang signs. Back in the arena, Jericho wants JJ Dillon to come out because he has evidence to show that he wrongfully lost the cruiserweight title and the decision should be reversed. Dillon doesn't show up and Jericho lashes out.

Last few seconds of Chavo vs Alex Wright. Chavo submits immediately when Wright applies a submission, which brings Eddy out to break up a post-match brawl between the two. Eddy has great news - he just got off the phone with Grandma and everyone is so proud of him! Eddy vs Chavo no longer has to happen! Chavo insists on the match still happening. Both Eddy and Jericho are doing a great job carrying all sides of programs right now.

They need to get Hennig out of this group, but I think that's coming soon. They need to get Savage out of this group, but their hand will be forced there soon. Did WCW really zoom in to a group of black people in the upper balcony? They are back in Washington DC where they began the destruction of Sting's viability as the top guy, so it only makes sense that they finish the job back in the same arena. Interesting how Savage has become a bit player while Nash and Luger do all the talking. They end up making Luger/Nash vs Hogan/Giant for tonight. Nash is really good at acting cool even though it's pretty manipulative.

16 years later, this match still puts a huge smile on my face. It was loved at the time, then there was a spell where it wasn't because a lot of the things that made it work were so overdone over the next few years. But with some distance, it once again looks just as great and fresh and unique as it did at the time. This is the perfect marriage of wrestling and booking. Yes, there are lots of booking twists and turns, but the match itself is pretty great too, with Austin taking some wild bumps in and around the cars. It surprised me that he actually bumped more than Foley in this match on top of a great blade job. They really structured the wrestling arcs exceptionally well, and Austin took a beating for so long that his comeback got over huge. I thought it was a great testament to how over he was that he teased a comeback when the vision of half the building was impaired and he still got a huge pop for doing it. All of the gaga is well-documented, with Vince ordering Patterson to change the rules on the fly, Vince eating the mother of all chairshots and Undertaker putting both Patterson and Brisco through tables. Everyone involved in this - Austin, Foley, Vince, Patterson, Brisco, Undertaker, Jim Ross, Jerry Lawler - did their job exceptionally well. Great match, MOTYC for 1998 without a doubt.

Last few minutes. Kane beats Vader with the tombstone on his way out of the WWF. He gets unmasked and they act like that's not something we haven't seen in particularly grueling Vader matches for years. Vader does the famous interview after the match about being a fat piece of shit and walks out.

The Rock is in a neckbrace while being consoled by The Nation. It's obvious he's faking the injury, but he's been told he has to defend the IC title against Faarooq tonight or he'll be stripped of the belt.

Sable has to win her independence from Marc Mero in a match because this is wrestling. You can tell WWE is down on Mero, with Jim Ross saying from the booth that Sable has done more to draw attention to his career than anything he has ever done on his own ... and he has even been the Intercontinental Champion! That line is funny in 1998 but a kneeslapper in 2014! Mero showed up expecting Sable to have someone wrestling to defend her honor, but she insists on winning her freedom herself. Anyway, Mero lays down and says he's going to let Sable pin him, but he pulls a fast one on her, rolling her up to pin her. Oh no, Sable isn't free! She also has to leave the WWF forever! For-ever! FOREVER!

The shortest match of the series so far, probably because they are working the C-show. This was a really good, fast-paced match. This series is a nice departure from endless NWO vs NWO angles. They didn't have quite as much time as usual, but they really went all out. Great stuff.

Fun comedy match with Tracy Smothers and Blue Meanie doing a dance-off. I love Smothers, but fat guy dancing to "Let Me Clear My Throat" will always win a dance-off. Tommy Rich should have won best second in the RSPW awards. WTF to the referee giving bodyslams to the FBI? From there, this goes into standard Southern tag stuff that is very well executed. Really nice match.

Tamura gets completely John Cena'd here, totally squashed by Tariel because he lost the shoot to Overeem the month before. It's unfortunate - and weird - when the best wrestler in the world is being treated like this because he lost a shoot.

Actually, Hogan/Rodman vs DDP/Malone at Bash at the Beach '98 drew a higher buyrate than Starrcade '97.

That probably warrants a thread.

This was going along swimmingly until the finish that seemed out of nowhere. I'm not even quite sure what happened. This went ten minutes and I could have easily watched them for twenty.

This feud has grown into something epic by this point, but this match is too short to hit the same level. It's kind of the equivalent of a Misawa-Kawada Carnival match - really good and worth seeing, but a step below their title matches. We get about 12 minutes of 20:37, in which they go all out, busting out all their big moves and doing lots of nearfalls. This doesn't feel complete (and it's not), so I'm hesitant to rank this without the full match being available out there. Too bad it's not because what we see is definitely hot. But it's something that starts hot and stays at the same level, so it's hard to see how they got there in the first place. This is the second Liger-Otani match of the year (and not the last, by the way) that is clipped and looks tremendous where we don't have the entire thing because it has never been released in full.

Bret Hart is flanked by The Giant, Eric Bischoff and Vincent. Is there any rhyme or reason behind who comes out for these interviews? Bret tries to convince Sting to join the NWO black and white but the Wolfpac interrupt. Nash says Sting should be in the Wolfpac and Bret cuts a scorched earth promo on him out of nowhere. The show closes with a big brawl involving everyone.

This is different from the previous match in that Benoit is dominant for most of this and Booker works from underneath. While I really liked the first match, I liked this one even more just because Booker's comeback was built up so well. I also dug the more methodical pace here because it really gave some levity to all the pin attempts at the end - they created the feel that they had been through a real war. Booker missing the Harlem sidekick was a great spot too, because they made us wait longer for Booker's big moment where he would turn the tide. The real comeback later in the match got over really big and Booker toughed out a win after a missile dropkick. This was a great match.

The Wolfpac has their new music. Lee Marshall calls Lex Luger "MC Rap Master Snoop Doggy Luger". This is Luger's promo to explain why he has turned. Luger says he did not turn his back on WCW. He still respects WCW, but he wanted to be a player. I respect his honesty but laaammeee. Luger then turns his attention to Sting and begs him to join the Wolfpac. This makes absolutely no sense.

Jericho is wearing a Rey t-shirt to slowly lay the groundwork for that feud too. Jericho feels awful for the argument he had with JJ Dillon and swears that it will never happen again. Jericho asks for one more chance to plead his case to JJ Dillon and promises to be more polite this time around. When Tony tells him Dillon isn't in the building, Jericho totally changes his tone and starts insulting JJ. He claims that on Monday, he's going to Washington DC to find the "jurisprudence" to have the cruiserweight title returned to him. The entire time, Tony has to hold up a sign that says CONSPIRACY VICTIM with an arrow pointing to the right. Jericho is making a lot out of nothing at all.

Fantastic match constructed like a Southern tag with the FMW flavor. Fuyuki and Kanemura make great heels and isolate Tanaka until Hayabusa gets the hot tag. Hayabusa's highspots were excellent. The stretch of nearfalls at the end was tremendous, with Tanaka repeatedly finding a way to kick out of big beatings and getting over huge in the process. Fuyuki was great as a big Choshu-like guy using his lariat as an equalizer. They cut an awesome pace at the end too. Top 3 MOTY at this point.

This was a fabulous match, probably the MOTY to this point. While I love shoot style, this takes it a step farther by incorporating traditional pro wrestling selling and match structure. Ishikawa and Ikeda are pros, so we get the slow, agonizing attempts from Ishikawa to get to his feet. We get Ikeda favoring his arm for a while after Ishikawa works on it. This has the great exchanges, but it also has the same ebb-and-flow of a great wrestling match with a slow build, heat section and big comeback. Of course this is an Inoki fed, so moves like the octopus are established enough to get a big reaction. Fantastic.
