[1998-04-11-AJPW-Championship Carnival] Kenta Kobashi vs Jun Akiyama
Loss replied to Loss's topic in April 1998
This was an excellent match. Kobashi doesn't do it very often, but he really is excellent at working holds. He does some really nice arm work and gets a crossface (a simple forearm lodged into Akiyama's face - not the Benoit version) over big time by really cinching it in, also later applying it from almost an abdominal stretch position. He also does a really beautiful vertical suplex, maybe one of the best ones I've ever seen. He is completely dominant early. Akiyama turns the tide with a dragon screw leg whip on Kobashi's knee as he's coming from the top rope, which was a really cool transition. Akiyama goes right for the knee and stays on it. He's not as dynamic as Kobashi on offense, so the match suffers a little bit when he takes over, but he's very good by any other human standard. When Kobashi starts to rally back, Akiyama manages to catch him with yet another dragon screw leg whip. From there, they moved into a hot final few minutes of trading falls with Kobashi still heavily favoring his knee. This was a great match - one of my favorites of '98 to this point - but it also showed that Akiyama had an impossible act to follow in being positioned to carry the next generation. The knee stuff was completely made by Kobashi's selling of it.- 9 replies

Jericho demands that Skee-a-vone calls him by his proper name in a funny moment. Jericho claims that Prince Iaukea weighs too much to challenge for the cruiserweight title and asks him to come out and step on Jericho's scale to prove it. Iaukea is within the weight limit and Jericho argues that it's not calibrated properly before finally bashing him over the head with it. Kudos to Jericho for trying to make something out of a nothing match that is really beneath him at this point.

A fan jumps Raven during his promo, pulling his hair and actually yanking him out of the ring. Raven is understandably flustered and now his mic doesn't work and he has no idea. What a trainwreck! He thinks he's getting heat. Finally his mic comes back. Good Lord. Hard to convey how much of a disaster this was.

Finish of a DX vs DOA match later in the show. DX pins them then destroys them with chairshots before handcuffing them to the ring. The LOD come out to make the save and DX mounts a comeback. IIRC, DOA weren't around very long at all after this.

These vignettes got over huge, but I wish they had come up with more clever porn titles. This is not a gimmick that would work now because I don't think you can do occupation gimmicks now.

Cactus begins his heel turn with a great promo. He sits in a chair in the middle of the ring. He points out that Terry Funk flew home and it must be really bad because Cactus Jack and Terry Funk do not miss wrestling matches. He says some kind words about Terry Funk and the fans are being so disrespectful which probably made it easy for Cactus to muster the anger needed to do this promo. I loved this but I really hated the heckling idiots since he was 100% right.

LOUD Austin chants start before Vince even opens his mouth. Vince reveals that because he is benevolent, he dropped charges against Austin that night. He wants to put the issues with Austin behind him because tonight, he will introduce a new and improved Stone Cold Steve Austin and he couldn't be happier. Guaranteed or your money back!

Last few minutes. Sting is working over Nash's knee. Konnan is at ringside in Nash's corner. Nash reaches the ropes when Sting locks in the Scorpion Deathlock. This match isn't half bad, believe it or not, as Nash sells really well. Sting has a nice comeback too, in spite of Konnan's clumsy run-in. Hogan runs in when Nash is about to win and starts pummeling Sting. Nash pulls Hogan off of Sting and they get in a shoving match. People are pretty hot for this. The NWO ends up running in and attacking Sting, but Nash and Konnan separate themselves from the group and just bail. I'd probably look back on this fondly if it led to an actual Hogan-Nash feud.

Jericho dedicates this episode of Nitro to Dean Malenko. On behalf of all the Jerichoholics, he begs Dean to come back and calls him the second greatest wrestler in the world. He also came up with some odd name for Prince Iaukea that I don't even know how to spell, but it's funny. "You don't even own a pair of wrestling boots!" He promises to rock down to Electric Avenue after beating Juventud Guerrera.

Despite all the problems, the NWO is still paying for Savage to hawk his t-shirts. Maybe they had a surplus they wanted to get rid of before officially dumping him?

They are implying now that Hogan ran over Savage in his Viper, and unless it involves Jerry Lawler and Eddie Gilbert, I hate vehicular assault in wrestling angles as a rule. Hogan ensures us that there are no problems with Nash and that they are like brothers, but Nash is nowhere to be found. I hate that Hogan won't call the pay-per-view by name. It's called Spring Stampede, Hulk, not "the pay-per-view". Hogan is pretty annoying here and despite reinventing himself brilliantly two years earlier is slowly becoming as stale as ever. He seems to be losing something by the week.

It says a lot that this has been the direction for months and they haven't thought to rebuild someone like Ryback during that time. A sustained megapush post-Wrestlemania could have easily made him hot again.

While Summerslam was great, I still imagine this alternative universe in my head where Daniel Bryan never got hurt and had his momentum stalled after Wrestlemania. The emotion over him getting obliterated like that would have been very different and they could be selling right now that we may have seen him for the last time. Cena works almost as well, but it really would have been a different dynamic.

This has a really weird blinking effect that I could seriously see bothering someone with epilepsy. I don't mean that flippantly. Anyway, it recaps the Savage and Nash dissension with Hogan.

We see Savage laid out outside the building before being carted out by EMTs. They are portraying it as a mystery what exactly happened.

[1998-04-04-ECW-Buffalo, NY] Rob Van Dam vs Bam Bam Bigelow
Loss replied to Loss's topic in April 1998
When RVD started doing his stalling BS early on, I thought we were in for another disappointing match, but this was really good - one of the best matches Van Dam ever had. I thought they did a surprisingly good job allowing the dangerous highspots time to breathe and get over. This was a real war, progressively getting more violent with some really nice nearfalls that had the crowd hyped. Bigelow had his face all bandaged up and it fell off, revealing a nasty cut that was reopened. Bigelow's power spots were a nice contrast to Van Dam's flying moves. I was surprised at how much I like this, and the title change at the end really does feel like an important moment. -
[1998-04-04-NJPW-Inoki Retirement Show] Antonio Inoki vs Don Frye
Loss replied to Loss's topic in April 1998
Inoki's retirement match is over pretty quickly. I enjoyed it while it lasted. Frye did a great job convincingly putting him over. Nice ceremony after the match with every wrestler in the company wishing him well. -
[1998-04-04-NJPW-Inoki Retirement Show] Kensuke Sasaki vs Tatsumi Fujinami
Loss replied to Loss's topic in April 1998
Last few minutes. Fujinami wins the IWGP title in a huge upset but he just didn't have it anymore by this time. The crowd reaction is awesome though. -
The FBI stuff was the best part of this, but Douglas was good too. Blue Meanie is terrible.

Yeah, there aren't as many good matches, but watching the week-to-week story of the Monday Night Wars is great fun. Luckily, the G-1 and some of the better looking All Japan on paper is still ahead of us. Plus, more RINGS is on the horizon and I know 1999 FMW is excellent, so I'm hoping there are more matches at that level in '98.

[1998-03-30-WWF-Raw] New Age Outlaws vs Cactus Jack & Chainsaw Charlie (Cage)
Loss replied to Loss's topic in March 1998
Quick match to resolve the title issue from the night before and add the NAO to DX. -
A porn star gimmick fits in perfectly with where they are going. The WWF would lose the ratings battle this particular week, but they had definitely turned the corner.
