Mike Tenay's creepy facial expressions while Raven talks really shows how talented Gene Okerlund is. Raven blames DDP for having to spend so long in ECW and promises to win the U.S. title tonight and not defend it at Uncensored since no one ever have him any chances to succeed.

I'm a fan of Shane Douglas promos around this time. They're long-winded, but his delivery is great.

Where the Big Boys Play #65 - Great American Bash 91
Loss replied to JerryvonKramer's topic in Publications and Podcasts
I think it worked better with him keeping the mullet. I think the whole idea was that these guys were trying to go corporate yet had no idea how to do it because they were such clueless washouts who didn't realize times had changed. At least that's what I told myself. -
Hey, they're playing "Super Bon Bon" in the background! They show an excerpt of Heyman's interview on the Hardcore Hotline raving about how title changes are determined by corporate boardrooms in other promotions. Heyman is justifying his Tag Team Partners That Hate Each Other booking in this. This was about as hypocritical as it gets but I still loved it.

This was hyped for weeks and was all a big bait and switch. It doesn't make for the most romantic story, but baiting and switching repeatedly was one of the key parts of how the WWF turned ratings around. DX attack Austin at the entrance as soon as he shows his face. Ross's outrage is great! Austin gets up after a couple of minutes and takes off, presumably to find DX. Meanwhile, Kane and Paul Bearer are still in the ring and Uncle Paul asks Kane to get the ring bell from ringside. Kane ends up beating up a fan in a weird moment and then they bully the timekeeper into tolling the bell ten times in memory of the Undertaker. It's obvious where this is going, but it's still good. Mark Yeaton then eats a chokeslam and a tombstone. Paul says Kane has one tombstone left and they challenge someone to step up and this is going way too long until the Undertaker's music finally starts and the arena goes dark. After bongs that seem to go forever, a lightning bolt hits the coffin as the Undertaker comes back to life. I like this as a moment, but Undertaker does too much talking and rambles on like he's the Ultimate Warrior. Seriously, those lines sound like something Warrior would cough up in a promo, not Undertaker. The Undertaker being mic'd for this makes it even more artificial-seeming than it already was.

I still think it was genius to use Gennifer Flowers as part of the Wrestlemania build.

Talk about it here.

This time DX is out to interrupt Mike Tyson. Vince heeling but not heeling by calling Tyson "unquestionably" the baddest man on the planet is great! DX would never disrespect people. Shawn calls Tyson BOY and makes a huge deal of it and then wants to fight Tyson! The crowd is electric. After teasing a fight, Shawn rips off Tyson's shirt to reveal a DX shirt underneath. There is nothing more 1998 wrestling than a t-shirt to show allegiance but I think this was the first time the WWF had gone that route. I actually loved this twist and thought it made perfect sense considering that Austin picked a fight with the guy early on. I wonder who in the truck DX paid off to play their music after the big swerve. HHH is getting a rub just from being around this stuff that's so far beyond anything he was even capable of capitalizing on at this point.

I appreciate WCW trying to make it seem like they just showed up at the video shoot uninvited, but I wish they had just aired it without explanation, because that made it even worse. Van Hammer, music video veteran of the early 90s, is there and I hope among hope that he told DDP & The Flock to just play it cool and listen to him since he was the only one experienced in this setting.

[1998-03-02-WCW-Nitro] Randy Savage: Real Man of the Year
Loss replied to Loss's topic in March 1998
Agreed that the NWO music does make this feel dated since Savage is being pushed as his own man. Pretty cool honor and cool effects here. I appreciate that Savage made efforts to stay contemporary and still worked hard even as he got older.- 5 replies

[1998-03-01-ECW-Living Dangerously] Bam Bam Bigelow vs Taz
Loss replied to Loss's topic in March 1998
ECW looks to be drawing about like early 90s WCW just based on the aesthetics, but I don't know if that's true if you look at the numbers. This wasn't a bad match at all, but a lot of the big stunts didn't get over. I think this might have ended up a better match in a different wrestling company because they wouldn't have had to throw in the obligatory stupid bumps and table crap. "Choke him out!" and "Bam Bam!" chants show that it's the wrestling that's over with this crowd, but that's not the focus of what they're doing. I do think Bigelow was a really good fit for ECW at this point and he was exactly the type they needed more of - guys with national exposure whose potential had been squandered by the Big Two who could be rebuilt into meaning something. The hole in the ring thing got a big reaction because it was so unexpected and it was sold as a big deal, but it's not like they took an enormous bump or anything. When stuff like that isn't built up well, to me it just makes ECW look cheap for having a shitty ring.- 7 replies

[1998-03-01-ECW-Living Dangerously] Tommy Dreamer vs Justin Credible
Loss replied to Loss's topic in March 1998
I know they aren't in ECW Arena, but this shows how not over Justin Credible was. The Beulah stuff was so ill-timed because of the long, awkward pauses in between things. That's on the heels and not her.- 5 replies

Last few minutes. Doc had nothing left by 1998. Pretty uninspiring action. Kawada and Taue win the tag titles.

It's the same thing that has been reported elsewhere about Impact moving to Wednesday nights. Dave also has a report up on it. I'd advise against copy/pasting from PWInsider given their tendency to threaten lawsuits over petty shit.

The entire NWO comes out without Scott Hall (or Randy Savage) for this Sting vs Hall match. They are teasing that Hall will beat Sting then give the belt to Hogan, which would have been a great way to split the group since they had no clue what to do with Sting. Sting's reaction is awfully lukewarm by the way. The ring clears for Hogan to take on Sting in a match that means zilch at this point because they've ruined the feud. Meanwhile, a fake Sting shows up from behind Sting and it's of course Scott Hall. This isn't a terrible way to build up a Sting-Hall match, but I wish the match had been pushed harder. Savage ends up entering the ring and taking swings at everyone but gets beaten down. Hey, there's Scott Steiner and his new blond haircut. Then The Disciple (ugh!) shows up in a completely anti-climatic way and stands in the corner. Luger finally comes out with a chair and clears the ring. Wow did WCW need a new idea at this point.

[1998-02-23-WWF-Raw] Steve Austin's Road To Wrestlemania
Loss replied to Loss's topic in February 1998
I like how they purposely picked celebrities with bad reputations to be involved in Wrestlemania. WWF hype jobs where they let the producers do all the hype instead of the writers tend to be the best builds. -
The WWF sure spent a lot of time here on NWO member Dusty Rhodes. If I wrote for PWI at the time, I would have openly pushed that this was proof the NWO were double agents sent to destroy WCW from within, considering that their happy relationship is played up so much. Dustin does great with this, but they present this in a way where it seems to be the idea of someone else instead of something Goldust is doing to get attention, whereas everything before this has caught the announcers by surprise and has seemed more spontaneous. I understand why they did it that way but it stands out. Anyway, this has some fun comedy and I agree that it's probably the best simply because he can actually continue the parody in the match itself.

Michael Cole interviews the NAO on the way out of the building as they brag about ending the Legion of Doom once and for all. Interesting that Road Dogg is wearing a DX shirt long before they officially joined the group. I like that in a way, actually, and I don't think that would happen in WWE's overly quality controlled environment now. Terry Funk and Cactus Jack come out with a chainsaw and baseball bat trying to get through their rental car and the NAO are forced to speed away. Wrestlers aren't stunt drivers and it pisses me off for them when they are put in positions to do crap like that.

"Hey Steve" ... is that the first time Chyna spoke on camera? DX is at Shawn's house playing pool and hanging out in the house bar, but promise to raise hell in the next few weeks as we get closer to Wrestlemania.
-
Last few minutes. The NWO runs in after a ref bump and gets fought off after Savage costs Hogan the match - the feud that has been pushed harder than everything all year long to this point. Hogan getting WCW spraypainted on his chest should have been a bigger moment and would have had it happened at the conclusion of Starrcade '97. Now Sting can be a midcard champion while Hogan and Savage occupy the main event spots. Pretty clever.

This didn't feel like as big of a deal to me as I think it probably did to most people at the time, as the Steiners were just really a thing of the past to me at this point, and Scott turning on his brother felt like something happening about seven years too late. It was weird that Rick fought back after the turn because I think it took away from it as a focal point at least a little. Can anyone turn without joining the NWO? Did Scott ever even get a chance to explain his motivations? Does he hate WCW? Big Poppa Pump had a little bit of value as a singles wrestler once he settled into the gimmick, but it's fascinating watching the booking decisions in 1998 at this point. Everything involves the same players, so even the fresh stuff feels stale.
