  1. Loss
    Other than 4/20, the best six-man tag of the year, with Kikuchi bent like pretzel, Misawa knocked out and Jumbo and Taue in general just wreaking havoc everywhere. Again, Kawada just sort of blends in, which is odd for him. There was very little down time in this, and the Jumbo/Kikuchi stuff was the best part of the match.

    A mob gathers outside insisting that Randy Savage be reinstated. Poor Bobby Heenan is just trying to get to work. Savage shows up in the studio and campaigns for a moment. "I'm not a Republican. I'm not a Democrat. But a lot of people say I'm very, very, very, very, very independent."

    Piper is all fired up about what Flair did to him, giving a great interview. The WWF has been pretty hot lately, with a few angles clicking at the same time.

    Every time I see Van Hammer, I can't help but think of Cactus's book. I CAME HERE TO SAVE THE COMPANY. In all seriousness, he had a great look and decent charisma, and would have been a star if he could work even a lick.

    Missy Hyatt is pretty sure the Chamber of Horrors is being built at whatever spot they are in in Los Angeles. They go into this abandoned warehouse-type place and Paul E. decides to put on a mask and scare Missy.

    Eddie Marlin returns in his neckbrace and Embry attacks him yet again. Marlin gets in a few licks of his own, but this seems like overkill after the big brawl earlier in the show.

    Highlights of a great match from Mid South Coliseum. Fun to see Jarrett and Pritchard going at it again. Pritchard attacks the ref a few times. Embry is still a player, but I miss seeing him as the top heel and a cut above the rest. Back in the studio, Jarrett and Fuller cut a fired up interview before entering a match against the Texas Outlaws. Embry and Pritchard quickly run in and attack Jarrett and Fuller. They handcuff both guys to the ring ropes. Babyfaces quickly run out but they are outnumbered and it does no good, as Jarrett and Fuller are defenseless. Embry hitting Fuller with broken guitar pieces and an office chair is awesome. Lawler finally uses a baseball bat to run everyone off.

    We see Lawler mingling with celebrities at a Cleveland Indians game. They did a great job making Lawler seem like the real deal, but this was boring and loooonnnggg. Lawler doesn't want a match with Embry, which makes me not like how that feud just sort of petered out instead of having a real conclusion. But his focus is now on Billy Joe Travis, so all is forgiven, as I can handle that feud. Lawler goes into a match with Bull Pain, and Travis is out quickly to play the guitar Lawler left at ringside that he had been going on about. He ends up smashing the guitar to pieces. By the time Lawler gets out of the ring, Travis disappears. Lawler's promo in response to this is just really overwrought, and I'm really not digging this at all. He tells Travis he is getting a five-count to come back out and tell everyone he is going to get into the ring with him. Travis is nowhere to be found until Lawler goes to the parking lot and threatens to take a baseball bat to his car. Yes, that's legal. Lawler talks too much and comes across sort of obnoxious in all of this. You can tell Embry is no longer booking when he's playing second fiddle to Travis in all of this. Some people may like this, but I think this is the worst Memphis segment on a yearbook.

    I know I'm in the minority, but I don't like Flair and Heenan together. Flair should have come in all by himself. This is the best Flair interview all year though. Flair used 2001 in this run longer than I remembered.

    Slaughter is at the Lincoln Memorial asking for forgiveness in his darkest hour. These somehow continue to get more shameless as time goes on.

    Again, they seem to be pushing the idea that Tito Santana is from Spain. This actually is a pretty decent vignette for repackaging a guy.

    Some guy in a Batman shirt wielding something that WCW is too afraid to actually make a knife tries to mug Paul E. and Missy Hyatt on camera for some reason. Paul E. ends up smashing him on his phone. I have no idea what is going on.

    I liked the other match more, but I still thought this one was excellent, especially in the bomb-throwing stretch at the end. I will say that Suzuki seems more green here, like she has some good ideas and good moves, but isn't really good at stringing them together coherently. But they overcome that, to a point where it doesn't seem to matter much, because what they do right they really do right. Scorpion looks excellent. I still appreciate this as something different, and I really like how they laid this out. Nice psychology and build, general selling of fatigue and good emotion too. Scorpion unmasks as someone who I feel like I should recognize and I don't. Neither comes across as a particularly great worker, but they look like they are capable of getting there soon enough.

    I do think there are multiple ways to layout a card that are equally effective, but I do agree that the afterglow of a really great match or big angle can make a good match that follows it seem anti-climatic, even if the work is good.

    I did like that Misawa pinned Taue for the finish. Much less obvious than Kikuchi or Ogawa eating the fall, which was what I expected.

    Good match, but something didn't quite work for me. I think it was Kawada's performance. Taue led his team in heeling so strong on Kawada that he had reason to be pissed off and come back all charged up and instead seemed really subdued. Kikuchi was really the workhorse of his team, and he was great at it, but the match wasn't really worked in a way to make him the centerpiece. Ogawa also did an excellent job, but this seemed a little too one-sided in favor of Jumbo's team. By the time they started working toward a finish, they seemed past a lot of that, and the last few minutes are the best part of the match.

    My point was that if WCW was still a money-making promotion, Time Warner would have kept it, and been supportive of it. And they stopped making money because people stopped buying pay-per-views and attending their shows. All the rest has always felt like excuse-making.

    Piper hangs out in the studio and vows revenge on Flair, making things tough on Bobby Heenan in the meantime. We cut to footage of the "Nasty Cam", which is the Nasty Boys and Jimmy Hart doing something I dont' understand outside a bathroom at all before walking in on a couple having sex. Piper also touches on the DiBiase/Virgil feud.

    Wrestlemania VIII in Indianapolis is already being hyped. Pretty funny Top 5 listing reasons to go to Indianapolis. Live WWF interviews are usually just catchphrases and no real emotion, but this was excellent. Jake says Savage is very fortunate that he can't return. Jake also tells Sid that chivalry is dead, he's not King Arthur, and that there's no roundtable. He accuses Savage of using Sid, making him a sacrificial lamb in a battle he is incapable of fighting. Jake ends up chasing Gene off with the snake, and they don't play it for laughs at all. Textbook heel stuff.

    There may have been all sorts of passion from Time Warner if WCW was still pulling high TV ratings and drawing 30,000 people to Nitros. Just a thought. :/

    Tony pulling out the threats at the broadcast booth always made me smile. "Don't you dare go away!" Or what, Tony? What are you going to do to me if I go away?

    Fair enough on the 2,000+ crowds. I was thinking about how small the ECW Arena was when I went there a few years back for the first time, and I remembered seeing fancams with a lot of high school gyms and armories.

    ECW might have worked, except that it didn't.

    It's entirely that. There is no such thing as someone who visits F4W who doesn't fall into that category. Paul Heyman has zero significant accomplishments to his name as a booker. Zero. No huge gate, no wildly successful PPV, no television ratings, no record gates. Nothing. At best, he helped give the start to a lot of guys who became stars later, which can be said for almost every promoter in history, including Joe Pedicino and Herb Abrams.
