No, this was the Texas wrestler Chaz. Chaz was the son of Tug Taylor and, for all I know, never left Texas to wrestle anywhere else. I take that back, I remember him doing a match on TNA Explosion once. Chaz wrestled some in AAA as American Chippendale, and his father went there as Cyclops. He only lasted a few weeks, Chippendale apparently was an insufferable douche on the locker room, which was not helped by him not being good at all and unable to work the style. They had pretty big plans for him as a main eventer.

From the Feb 12 1996 classic Observer posted early this week. This is awesome. […] at the Orlando Residence Inn where many of the wrestlers were staying, there was a hostage situation. At about midnight, a woman was thrown out of her room naked outside in 20 degree weather while the guy in the room barricaded himself in the attack, and the SWAT team had to come to tear gas him out. They had to evacuate all the rooms while this was going on, which included both WCW wrestlers and officials. Apparently the scene was almost directly out of a bizarre movie with Pillman and Disco Inferno, in character, saying that the Horsemen were there to save the day and him having everyone so confused as to what to make of him had people believing he was actually going to try and apprehend the guy himself (which he didn't do, although we've got reports that after the guy was apprehended, that Pillman kept giving him the four finger Horseman signal). -

Hahaha. I am easily amused. The entire menu was like this, a friend read it all to me but I can't remember any other than the German Potato Soup-lex, mainly because of how silly that name was. -

Konnan mentioned on his last podcast that he once got a royalty cheque from TNA for 2 bucks... royalties from a DVD he wasn't even on. -
I haven't seen this in ages but I believe the match is from 1986 or 87 even though it was re-aired by WWA in 1991.

Last week I went to Yoshihiro Takayama's restaurant in Tokyo. It's called Stomach Hold. He wasn't there (apparently he was working for NOAH that night). I didn't expect him to be there so it was OK, but apparently he is there a lot. Place was run by his wife, a very tall (probably 5'9" plus had high heels) and attractive Japanese lady, who speaks perfect English. She made sure I was comfortable and asked me my name and where I am from. One funny moment was when she asked me if I had seen the Don Frye fight, I said yes, the Bob Sapp one too and she facepalmed. It's a yakitori (skewers) restaurant, food was absolutely excellent, some of the best chicken steaks I have eaten in a long time and perhaps the best liver I have ever had. The Antonio Enoki dish (enoki mushrooms wrapped in bacon) was also fabulous. Walls had six of his belts (IWGP, GHC, triple crown and another one that may be PWF), some photos of him and figures of a few foreign wrestlers who I guess where his friends or heroes. Nothing overboard or tacky. Price was good for Tokyo, menus all in Japanese but I'm sure you could manage ordering with some help, and it's very central, in Yoyogi, very close to Shibuya. Very recommended to anybody here who visits Tokyo. -

I have never heard that story before, or if I have, I can't remember. But considering all the misfits that Pena had on TV the network complaining about those guys seems odd. Try to ask Steve himself, he's a super nice guy and will get back to you. -
I hadn't watched any WWE (save two or three matches and a few minutes here and there of random channel flipping) since 2007 until a few weeks ago and to me it was always clear that Cena is a heel, I think it's just that the concept of what a heel is has now changed. This situation now works perfectly for WWE as they can still market him to children, women and keep sending him to do media as he's perfect for that. As I said I hadn't watched almost anything since 2007, and before that, I hadn't watched WWE for maybe four years. So I am very out of touch. I always liked Chris Jericho, I considered him a solid guy though I never put him on the upper echelon of US workers. So I was surprised to see him working like it was WAR in 1994 (that's not a compliment). He also needs to stop doing that takedown with the punches because they look like schoolyard fight punches. I hadn't hated HHH for years. He was never ruining anything I like so out of sight out of mind. But seeing him getting destroyed to absolutely no reaction was as surprising as it was funny. I don't know if he's ever going to be as beloved as Undertaker or Shawn or Flair and that's always going to haunt him. Ryback looks too comical for me to take him seriously, his entrance is way too choreographed and who can take a guy seriously as a bad ass when you grunt and growl and yell "feed me more"? At least you could see Goldberg's intensity was real. Also he looks like a walking liability, sure, WWE won't pop him for steroids ever, but he puts the whole operation in question in a very public way and he's a Signature pharmacy case waiting to happen. And whoever told him to do the marching band thing when doing his finisher is a clueless idiot really. The Shield is a really cool act, I hope they don't fuck it up. Ambrose and Reigns may come out of it as legit superstars, Rollins I don't know, he's got that old CM Punk look that doesn't help. I had known the name "Dolph Ziggler" for years but I couldn't have picked the guy out of a lineup. I was expecting a lot as I always hear this talk (mostly WON though) about how this guy is so great and is like a new Curt Hennig but he only seems to have the worst attributes of Hennig. I liked Undertaker vs CM Punk a lot, didn't care about the rest, though the Bryan/Kane tag match was fun.

[1991-05-03-CMLL] Los Brazos vs El Dandy & Popitekus & Super Astro
pantherwagner replied to Loss's topic in May 1991
This is my favourite match ever. You nailed it right on the head. It's not the best ever, but it's charming, it's got matwork, comedy, highspots. It is a bit like old lucha used to be, something anybody from little kids to grandma can enjoy.- 12 replies

Is there an online guide/resource listing all the obits and history articles that Dave has written (at least in recent years) and the issue where they were published?

Perfect, if Rene Goulet is the referee. And Monster Ripper the timekeeper.

[1991-04-01-SWS-Wrestle Dream in Kobe] Earthquake vs Koji Kitao
pantherwagner replied to Loss's topic in April 1991
Short story is that Kitao didn't want to do anything for Tenta, as he was a much lower rank of sumo wrestler, so he didn't respect him. He had done a clean job for him a couple of days earlier and he wasn't about to do the same thing again. Great Kabuki alerted Tenta of the entire situation (the SWS office were tired of Kitao's bullshit) and told him that SWS was OK with him shooting if he had to. So he was ready. Legend said that if a shoot was going to go down, Bret Hart and Hulk Hogan were ready to have John's back. Then you saw what happened. Both men got into a situation neither wanted to be in. In theory John should have used his wrestling to take Kitao down (he took him down like a child when he didn't go down for the bearhug spot) but it's also clear he had no clue on how to react to the kicks. Kitao was fired, Kabuki was reprimanded, and I guess they were OK enough with it a few years later as they fought each other in tag matches for WAR.- 13 replies

I have seen the magazine that you own at a different book shop. If you open your magazine you will see the one that I bought on the back side of the front cover. -
I stopped caring about it a very long time ago for obvious reasons, but those of us who played Wrestlefest as children had Hogan and Warrior vs. Legion of Doom as our ultimate dream match.

These are different. They also seem to be 40 anniversary specials but there's no Baba in the cover, only foreigners. Cover price is 1200 JPY. They released something similar 30 years ago, both are hardcover books. I have both but don't remember what I paid from them (pretty sure that I bought them at yahoo auctions). I didn't let that stop me from buying the 40 anniversary editions... -

I'm currently in Nagasaki. I came to Japan for the first time in 2007 and I've been coming every year since 2009, mostly as 2 or 3 days stopovers on my way from/to somewhere else to say hi and hang out with friends. One of my must do stops on my first or second day is to stop by a Kinokuniya bookstore, some of them are giant and you can find books or magazines on anything. I usually spend a decent amount buying photography books and magazines. I always stop by the sports section and except for 2007, where you could still find 4-5 pro wrestling magazines, on every trip I have seen only one single magazine (Gong I believe, the only one that is still alive), Kakutogi Gong for MMA and sometimes some of those book-DVD combinations with matches of mostly Inoki and Tiger Mask. I've never found anything worth buying. Well this time I was surprised as there are tons of different books and magazines. There are two super cool AJPW and NJPW books with profiles of every single foreign wrestler to ever work for them, and cool colour pictures of the most important 300 or 400 ones. For those in large american cities with Kinokuniya stores, If you can get your hands on those two do so. They are a great nostalgia trip. Also: A few NJPW picture books, including one of Tanahashi showing his pretty body, I think we could send a copy of that one to Dave Meltzer. There seems to be another mag that has been going on for a while but I never saw before called G Spirit or something like that, it seems to be focused on old stuff and it had histories of SWS/WAR/Universal/FMW/BJPW and other 90s indies including interviews with main players. It also had a section on the NWA Middleweight title by Dr. Lucha (the original one, not Steve Sims) with tons of cool old Mexican photos. And there's a magazine (that is very thin and there are about 30 volumes of it) called Data Bank showing pictures of old matches and events and profiles of wrestlers (you can find similar magazines for baseball or sumo). And a few others that I don't remember now. I wonder if it's just a nostalgia fad, a happening on this store/city only, or as the Observer reports there's really been a surge in popularity in Japan again. -

It's in Kitami, Setagaya, close to Seijogakuen-mae station. You can also access it from Futako-Tamagawa station. http://orenooudou.com/ Bull runs a bar now in Nakano near Shinjuku. Here's a random ass youtube video showing how to find it -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5Na_6Ush9U Thanks! Been to either place? I have watched that video and it looks like it's only a block or two away from where it used to be, or it may actually be the same location. I'm not sure as I found it for the first time ever randomly exploring the neighbourhood. I had absolutely no idea she had a restaurant until I stumbled upon it. -

Fuck it Kawada ramen. I will be in Japan in a few weeks. Address? I want to go to Bull Nakano's restaurant too, last time that I was in Tokyo the place was closed while she was buying a new bigger place. -

I don't know about WE but maybe you should stop posting 100 new threads a day... Joking aside, I do exactly the same thing that you do. Works well enough for me, so mine is just kind of a minor complaint really, not worth even investigating if there's not a quick ready-made fix that can be applied to the board.
-
This is more of a software complaint and I'm not sure you can do anything about it. It probably doesn't apply to most of you either. I come here often but sometimes don't visit for 2 or 3 weeks and when I go to "view new posts" I can see up to 100 pages and 95% are match reviews by month for the yearbooks. Not saying that I don't enjoy those (they are an invaluable reference source for the board) but sometimes I'd like to filter through them. Right now I'm achieving that by going to the individual boards as there aren't too many but with the growing number of categories I may end up missing a lot of stuff. An "order by forum" sort function on the search results would be sufficient for me I guess.

Is there a website listing Japanese show tours for the next few months?
