  1. Hayes fits comfortably in the "I thought this guy was supposed to suck" category. I like Hayes a lot in the ring actually. I'm only three discs into the TX Set (got some binging to do there in the next couple of weeks), but Hayes has been the star of a lot of the matches so far. I think Hayes was at least as good, if not better than David Von Erich
  2. I haven't seen any one other than me praise Yamakawa and Honma in years. I don't doubt you FLIK but where is that discussion going on? That first six-man is on one of the BJPW Neo-Death commercials from memory and is really good.
  3. I HATED this match at the time, but when I rewatched it a couple of years back I thought it was safely "good" and borderline very good. MOTYC seems a bit much to me, but I think it holds up well.
  4. The matches sucked. They did have some good matches together, but the 96 feud was trainwreck match, after trainwreck match. And I'm a guy that likes ECW
  5. I really need to rewatch the Honma/Yamakawa stuff. I converted the matches about a year ago and paid casual attention to them thinking they were good in the process. Remember some other good Honma matches from that period too. Both of those guys strike me as guys who are almost totally forgotten despite the fact that Big Japan is the last man standing among the garbage feds and to some degree they created that style. For FMW guys who don't get their due, Oya strikes me as the ultimate but I haven't watched any FMW in years aside from the little bit that was on GH's Funk comp.
  6. 93 was a down year for Dustin and WCW in general in between two real high years of 92 and 94. He didn't have a group as strong as the Dangerous Alliance to play off, and they he was still really good when given the chances, I doubt a lot of people were paying attention to his b-show feud with Foley that ran three weeks or other things of that ilk. 94 he would have been low in part because of the ECW bump which is funny because 94 ECW really doesn't have anyone you would identify as above Dustin's level besides guys that were all with him in WCW the year before (Benoit, Scorp) and guys that were overrated due to novelty at the time (Sabu, maybe Tasmaniac?). Still you get the feeling what hurt him more in 94 was the fact that the Studd Stable feud - which was a tremendous feud with numerous great matches - did not set the World on fire in an age where speed, fluidity and innovation were being pimped as the be all and end all.
  7. So I take this to mean your truth commission days are over? For what it's worth I would prefer Bryan devote most of his time to Coast 2 Coast style efforts and in no way am I slagging him for choosing to do a show like that.
  8. I agree that there was more drama in 01. I just don't think the match was as good and I thought the dramatic ending was really awful though I know I am in the minority there.
  9. Yeah Dustin has become a huge online favorite and with good reason. What would be an interesting comp would be Pillman 91-93 v. Dustin 91-93. I love Pillman. He's one of my five favorite wrestlers ever. But I'm not sure he would come across as the clear victor in such a comp Also Keller's criticism of Gang is bizarre in particular the stuff about lack of charisma.
  10. Who ever said liking michaels disqualified someone from being treated Seriously? given your self professed status as iwc crusader for contextual accuracy I assume you have plenty of evidence to support the claim. I would love to see it. I would also love to see you share an opinion on actual wrestlers, matches, et, as well.
  11. I would be interested in hearing an Alvarez/Stern discussion on the differences between New Haven chapter with it's cultural nationalist leanings and L.A./Bay Area Chapters that were engaged in state of open warfare with Ron Karenga's United Slaves cultural nationalist organization. Also I imagine an extended discussion of how Geronimo Pratt's prison memoirs stack up next to Countdown To Lockdown could make for an interesting listen.
  12. They will reveal it but only when Vince is feeling really desperate. They are too cowardly to get rid of the needless "authority figure" gimmick so this is an end around where it doesn't have to be the focus of all the storylines either. Also I don't think the Morrison push has anything to do with TE return. I think they are pretty clearly trying to recreate Jeff Hardy.
  13. I liked Ric's character fine at the time especially his interactions with Okerland which were always amusing. His matches - even the ones that were thought well of at the time - tend to not hold up for me from that era though I wouldn't call them "bad." Was talking to goodhelmet about this the other day but Flair has become such a strong garbage wrestler in his super old age, that I sort of wish he had somehow ended up in FMW in 96. It's pure fantasy of course and there was zero chance of it ever happening, but I think had he gone that route he would be remembered as one of the best "death match" wrestlers as well and I don't think his stock in the "best of all time" debate would have gone down as much as it has with certain segments of the smark universe (not that he gives a shit one way or the other).
  14. me either I think this a scam as well, and I don't know why Dave & Bryan gave him time or at least had a followup acknowledging that it was stupid to do so, but... Man, you're a douche. You should write a column about it Todd. Speaking of which do you think Public Enemy are viable HoF candidates?
  15. Turning Austin heel and aligning him with his worst enemy in Texas is probably the stupidest thing imaginable to end your "big show" with.
  16. The match was sloppy in parts and had a terrible, terrible, terrible finish that was inexcusably stupid. Having said that I still have no problem calling it a great match. Loss is right that the 19 match is better.
  17. 1990 was a really good year for tag wrestling in WCW. Tons of fun matches.
  18. The AWA Set is going to help Martel's rep a lot.
  19. Balls was hit or miss. I think Balls/Axl was a very, very good tag team and in general I think Balls was a very good tag worker. He had excellent chemistry with the Dudleys and FBI and was capable of working schticky stuff, brawling, even highspot heavy stuff really well. Was one of Tanaka and RVD's better opponents in ECW. Problem was bad Balls was REALLY bad as he had this really shitty slow motion way of bumping when he was blown up, could get sloppy as fuck, et. Probably better than his reputation would suggest but he's not one of the guys who has really stood out during all the ECW watching.
  20. I really don't like the Malenko matches much at all aside from HH match. This is the only Psicosis v. Rey match in WCW that was any good, but it was great. I think it rivals Eddy v. Rey at HH 97 for the best cruiser match WCW ever ran actually.
  21. I've got the Street v. Breaks match on my comp. It's probably one of the ten best matches I've seen pre-80
  22. I would think a 70's Set would include a lot of Europe. How was much Adrian Street WoS is available from the 70's?
  23. Gotta endorse Khawk's Heenan Set. I'm half way through disc one and it is really great stuff going all the way back to his 74 introduction as Stevens/Bock manager.
