[1998-03-29-WWF-Wrestlemania XIV] Shawn Michaels vs Steve Austin
Childs replied to Loss's topic in March 1998
I don't know that Shawn's performance was one of the gutsiest ever, but his resilience did add drama to the match. His story, and they made this part of the build-up, was that beneath all the flash and controversy, he was a tough, resourceful champion when pushed. Well, we sure got to see that, with him grasping for the tools available to him--in this case, the legwork. Not sure how he was "badly exposed." I didn't find the match as stirring as Loss, despite the melding of reality and spectacle. They could have stacked the deck against Austin a bit more, either by keeping DX around longer or getting Tyson more involved. And the ending seemed a little easy and pro forma. But it was all good enough, especially given the circumstances.- 14 replies

[1998-03-29-WWF-Wrestlemania XIV] The Undertaker vs Kane
Childs replied to Loss's topic in March 1998
I was surprised we didn't get a little more taste of the match, though obviously it wasn't good and is readily available for viewing should anyone choose. I wonder if these two had a good match in them if pitted at the right time in their careers. Taker never seemed great at the monster vs. monster matches, so maybe not.- 10 replies

I loved this in isolation, but perhaps it was a little strange to make Rose a heel and then have Kane pop the crowd right before he wrestled Taker. That's probably overthinking it.

Does anybody give a shit about Randy Orton?
Childs replied to Cross Face Chicken Wing's topic in The Microscope
I harbor no great love for Orton, but the hatred for him here strikes me as weirdly out of scale and has actually made me more sympathetic to him. I found it strange that people immediately shat on his work with Reigns, when actually, he worked a pretty good match with some beautifully timed spots and put the rising star over clean. I even think he works a chinlock pretty well :-) Seriously though, I understand the exhaustion with Orton. I don't get excited for his programs either. But I'm fine with him serving as an upper-card gatekeeper for the next generation and think his work in that capacity has been better than suggested by this thread. -
As a good, solid match between top guys, this felt weirdly out of place on Nitro. I kept expecting Savage and Hogan to run in. Sting looked the best he had since he started wrestling again--easily. I think back to the DDP of the early '90s and it would've been hard to imagine that guy as a consistent in-ring standout in such a talent-rich promotion. But the dude deserves serious credit for how much work he put in. The finish here was excellent, with Sting countering the diamond cutter straight into the death drop. Man, it's almost sad to see this in the midst of all that garbage.

[1998-03-22-AJPW-Championship Carnival] Mitsuharu Misawa vs Akira Taue

We haven't seen Misawa go down that easily in years. I know it was just a random Carny match but still.- 5 replies

[1998-03-21-ECWA-Super 8] Ace Darling vs Mike Quackenbush
Childs replied to Loss's topic in March 1998
I agree this was fine, but it certainly wouldn't make you want to hunt down more late '90s indy wrestling. Chad's correct about Quack's gear--unbelievably bad. If I had seen this at the time, I might've known he'd go on to run a promotion with aesthetics I'd hate. Darling did nothing to suggest he'd become anything. And he didn't, so I guess that fits. -
[1998-03-20-ECW-Blackwood, NJ] Rob Van Dam vs 2 Cold Scorpio
Childs replied to Loss's topic in March 1998
This totally failed to hold my attention. Sandman dancing with Scorp was my favorite part. -
Fantastic stuff, and the contrast between these build-up videos and the unfocused horseshit in WCW could not be sharper. Nobody's ever been better than Vince and Co. at this kind of thing.

[1998-03-15-WCW-Uncensored] Hulk Hogan vs Randy Savage (Cage)
Childs replied to Loss's topic in March 1998
This was incredibly stupid. Why did Mickey Jay unlock the door to let them wander around ringside? What possible purpose could that serve? Why was Beefcake suddenly in the middle of everything after the NWO explicitly rejected him early in its run? Did the beard change their minds? And I still have no idea what they hoped to achieve with the finish. It's just unbelievable that they had all these people who'd been involved in hot angles and nobody could step back and say, "Good lord, stop the dumbfuckery."- 10 replies

[1998-03-15-WCW-Uncensored] DDP vs Chris Benoit vs Raven
Childs replied to Loss's topic in March 1998
Fuck three ways, but this was pretty good despite the inherent nonsense. They did a nice job taking DDP out of commission and then making him look like a tough bastard as he crawled all the way down the ramp. The weapons stuff worked okay, though the diamond cutter through the table didn't look so hot.- 7 replies

I was surprised how cleanly Jericho went over. The Okerlund interview was bizarrely out of character. Wonder whose idea that was?

[1998-03-13-FMW-Winning Road] Hayabusa vs Masato Tanaka
Childs replied to Loss's topic in March 1998
They definitely went for something big, but this wasn't a good match. It was just a bunch of stuff thrown together in meaningless order. I don't enjoy Hayabusa as a singles wrestler. I don't think he had any idea what to do other than throw out the next big move. -
Not many high-end matches compared to previous years, huh? Not that I disagree. And yet the year still rolls by in fairly entertaining fashion, even if some of the entertainment comes from eye rolling at WCW.

I enjoyed this way more than anything I've seen from ECW's actual broadcasts in '98. This really did feel more like a heel vs. heel match than a standard Southern tag, though they did some excellent Southern tag spots. Smothers was on fire. I loved his little chop exchange with Candido where we got to see a bit of kung-fu Tracy. So little wasted space in this compared to most of ECW, which I usually find bloated, even when the underlying idea was good.

This was more very good BattlARTS than great BattlARTS. Usuda was an excellent striker and good mat technician but never came off as vicious as Ikeda or as creative as Otsuka. I loved the spot where Usuda reared back for a headbutt only to get his nose busted by a counter right from Ishikawa. That was an Inoki-Fujiwara spot, and it was cool to see them lift it from their inspirational godfathers. There's no promotion I'm looking more forward to seeing over the remainder of 1998 and 1999.

[1998-02-22-WCW-Superbrawl VIII] Hulk Hogan vs Sting
Childs replied to Loss's topic in February 1998
The funny thing is there was no need for Savage to hit Hogan. He could just as easily have helped fend off the NWO minions while Sting handled his business. That would've made Sting look better and still set up a Savage-Hogan program. Just dumb. Having said that, Sting did not burst off the screen in any of this. The feeling wasn't, "Fuck, they're holding down this supernova." It was, "Eh, Sting's getting fucked again."- 8 replies

[1998-02-22-WCW-Superbrawl VIII] DDP vs Chris Benoit
Childs replied to Loss's topic in February 1998
Benoit was on a major roll, no doubt. DDP did a good job of hanging, but this definitely felt like Benoit pulling him up a level rather than two great wrestlers going at it. For all the scattered virtues of the DDP-Savage series, it rarely featured DDP working with this kind of intensity. This helped both guys, which isn't a common thought when watching '98 WCW.- 8 replies

Like everybody else, I loved seeing Martel, whom I didn't appreciate at the time but now regard as one of the best talents of the '80s. It's absurd how much talent swirled through WCW in these years. I remember feeling like they did a good job with the early part of Booker's push, in that I never thought much of him with Harlem Heat but quickly accepted him as a singles threat. I'd say that impression holds after watching this pair of matches.

Couldn't agree more--the Steiners felt like ancient history. When was the last time they'd been treated as a big deal? Maybe 1993? Big Poppa Pump did end up as one of the more useful players in the post-peak NWO, so I guess it wasn't a total waste.

Yeah, this was seemingly innocuous but actually another sign of how they were fucking away Bret's post-Montreal momentum. He should have spent exactly zero time dicking around with C-list NWOers.

This made for an interesting contrast to the more famous Regal match, because Finlay, who was just as tough a guy, willingly set up Goldberg to look great. The Regal match was more memorable, but this was more professional. I agree with the Goldberg squash love. He wasn't some phony creation at all; he really had something, even if that something was limited.

[1998-02-18-ARSION-Grand Opening] Yumi Fukawa vs Candy Okutsu
