DVD #1: Ricky Steamboat & Jay Youngblood vs Sgt Slaughter & Don Kernodle
sek69 replied to Loss's topic in DVD Discussion
All I have to say is Don Kernodle's 80s-homemade-style shirt might be the greatest thing on the whole DVD. We need more of that in wrestling. Makes me wonder why he seemingly fell off the face of the planet after 1986 or so. -
I admit, when I saw this on the listing I was like "WTF is this, and why its it on here?" but once I watched it I instantly remembered it and how awesome it was. It's easy to forget how subtle JR could be in selling indignity, or anything else, without his usual 100 decibel style he does on RAW now.

You know, I'm thinking it's probably not a good idea to allow people who get that easily worked to buy stocks. Also, wouldn't these people upset about Vince being possibly dead having an effect on stock price also worry about the Chairman of the company acting crazy and doing a power walk while wearing electric pink zoot suits?

I'd argue Killings would have the best case anyone could have, didn't he get hurt in a TNA ring only to have them basically tell him to fuck off when it came to helping pay his medical bills?
-
Hearing the song in a commercial started my brain to wonder how funny/awesome would it be if when HHH makes his grand return the first thing you hear is the strains of "Ode to Joy" as he comes out in full 1995 blueblood snob gimmick. I mean, he's already went back to being DX Hunter, why not go back two more years in the time machine?
-
Maybe after the first shot, but by 8 or so I'm sure he wasn't even sure what zip code he was in let alone knew he should stay down.
-
When talking about uncharacteristically unsafe behavior, let's not forget Rock turning what was supposed to be just a few chair shots on an unprotected Mick Foley into like 11, causing legit heat between the two for a while (and probably legit scrambling Foley's brain in the process).

Upon reading WONs from 1991, Dave was really mad at the Sgt. Slaughter Iraq angle. To the point where the 2-4-91 WON was a Very Special Issue devoted entirely to his feelings on the subject.

WWE Most Powerful Families in Wrestling DVD Matchlist
sek69 replied to sek69's topic in Pro Wrestling
The ones you listed would be understandable due to footage ownership issues, but pretty much all of the Steiners' best moments were in WCW and WWF which would seem to be a logical inclusion just because it would be easier for them. -
It was all over the local news in Dallas that Fritz had a heart attack, and his condition would worsen or improve based on the gate that week. Also, this gives WWE the chance to copy one of World Class's most infamous moments when they reported on the real death of Gino Hernandez and the worked blinding of Chris Adams as equal tragedies. I can't wait to hear JR tell us about the two losses WWE has suffered in the last week.

Excellent find. As I recall they did the 10 bell salute for him as well.

WWE Most Powerful Families in Wrestling DVD Matchlist

I have to admit I didn't think about it when I watched the DVD, but it was pointed out that the Steiners were a pretty notable omission from the set. Bad feelings from the Scott vs HHH debacle still lingering? I mean they were arguably one of the best teams in the world before Scott completely exploded, they even provided (IMO) the one match that saved WM IX from being a complete mess. -
Also, Loss I c/p'd your post over on the DVDR Smackdown thread where people were bitching that they were making light of the sacred Tribute Shows with the Vince stuff. Your take was pretty much perfection so I shared it with the class.

I'm sure Dusty would have liked the angle if Vince said "make it good" before getting in the limo. I still wonder how Gerwitz ended up with so much pull. At least Kevin Dunn has been with the company forever, Gerwitz not to long ago was the guy everyone was making fun of behind his back for being a comic book mark and now he's in the Inner Circle.

The best part of the WON story was the mention that the idea came up to invite Bruno to the show, part of the reasoning being "Wilkes-Barre isn't that far from Pittsburgh". For those without a map nearby, they're on opposite sides of the state. Apparently the voice of reason won out since Dave didn't think Bruno was even asked.
-
To be fair, it would be pretty crass even by WWE standards to have a guy who's gimmick is based on death appearing on a tribute show. That much I never found fault with. I pretty much stopped taking tribute shows seriously when HBK wanted to get his win back from Rey after the Eddie show.
-
It would be interesting to see who was on what side of that debate. I wonder what HBK thinks, considering both his Jesusness and how he always spoke fondly of the days where Sherri was his manager.
-
I was reading the list of upcoming WWE DVDs and I realized that the only two left that I care about for the rest of the year are the WCCW set and maybe the Steve Austin set depending on the matchlist.
-
This is one of those things that can only happen in wrestling: they really can't acknowledge the real death of a recent inductee into their Hall of Fame because the next few weeks at least are all going to be built around a worked death. Man, now I have this whole scenario in my head where Vince was watching World Class tapes with his Mr. McMahon Joker grin on his face going "This Fritz guy was BRILLIANT~!"

Bruce Mitchell on Mark Henry being referred to as a "silverback"
sek69 replied to Loss's topic in Pro Wrestling
I HAVE OPINIONZ 4U!!! (he's on the left, Dave "It's Still Real To Me" Wills on the right) -
The latest episode of TNT features the Moolah/Richter screwjob and a cameo by Mel Phillips. Considering how WWE 24/7 tends to skew toward smarter fans, I find that somewhat hilarious as it unintentionally paints the company in the worst light possible all in a span of 43 minutes.

Bruce Mitchell on Mark Henry being referred to as a "silverback"
sek69 replied to Loss's topic in Pro Wrestling
Man, any point Mitchell ever tries to make is immediately canceled out by him being such an insufferable douchebag. Saying he has to consult Wikipedia for info on gorillas? Come the fuck on. Yeah, it's pretty close to the border for racism, but Vince could have a Klan rally on RAW next week and most of the media will ignore it just like they ignore anything wrestling does outside of WrestleMania. Also, is the term "Silverback" racist now? Is the IFL team with that name racist, or do they get a pass for being all white dudes? Or are they double-secret-probation racist for comparing the team to big black dudes? Hell, I always thought Mark Henry looked more like Predator than a gorilla anyway. -
Hogan's nWo run was also in the era of the Monday Night Wars and having to appear on TV every week, and once the shock of Hogan as a heel wore off he was right back to being excessively stale. The same could be said for his subsequent WWE nostalgia returns. At first it was "yay, this is cool just like when I was a kid" but after a few weeks it was just an old dude limping around the ring.
