  1. Lawler has managed to get Stacey a job in the WWF. Good Lord it's Mae Young and the Fabulous Moolah. Jarrett gets himself over finally by acting like a grade A asshole.
  2. Young Stephanie is in heaven here. She gets to act out her little soap opera fantasy with family and friends playing along. Despite an unfortunate experience at her first wedding ceremony she's very quickly moving on with life. Test probably can't believe his luck.
  3. By WCW production standards this was stunningly good. I always loved the history and the dynamic between Sting and Luger.
  4. Perhaps it was just Tori's fine ass, but I found this to be one of the more enjoyable WWF matches so far this year. That's not much of a compliment admittedly. If this was in WCW I'd be a bit concerned that someone had left that iron on.
  5. Al Snow's only real use was to be a punchline in Foley's books. His characters always sucked and he was stinking up the joint with his appalling attempt at acting here. The Rock is such a douchebag at this point, but gets away with it because he's so ridiculously charismatic.
  6. I'll get my sister a copy of this for Christmas. She used to have the Billy Blanks workout video.
  7. "Tastes like chicken" Some really horrible acting from Al in particular. Boss Man needs to work on his culinary presentation.
  8. When the time limit expired. 23m of the 30m was shown with AJW TV quality clipping. Early on they established the theme with Ohtani attacking the knee and Sammy working on the arm. The focus was exaggerated as they kept going back to those body parts. I wouldn't usually hate on blatantly copying a prior match from 3 1/2 years ago, but 1/21/96 stood out for being so unique. So comparing the two was all I was thinking of whilst viewing. Back in 1996 Ohtani was arguably the best in the world for a time. Here he was trying to get back to that level, but it took more conscious effort and his antics felt a bit forced. Samuel was a rock solid technical workhorse, but it all revolved around Shinjiro. Don't get me wrong it was a quality bout. The word that comes to mind is sequel. Reuniting the cast, repeating the initial formula and then trying to go somewhere a bit different with it. It was reasonably satisfying, yet not as good as the original.
  9. Carl Malenko is the new and improved Carl Greco to clear that one up. He's obviously not blood brothers with Joe, but what does that matter in wrestling? This definitely exceeded my expectations going in. I was highly impressed by the new Malenko. I'd seen him before on the sets but he hadn't stood out to me. Here he looked like a beast on the mat as both opponents put him over strong. The new name and haircut were doing wonders. I liked how the bout was structured. Too often shoot style tags feel like a series of singles encounters with interruptions, rather than having a proper team dynamic. Plus not staring at a blank wall is nice TY BattlARTS.
  10. A strikefest all the way. You know what you're getting with this feud. Whilst solid fare it did feel like a match too far in the rivalry. They never got beyond 3rd gear and the crowd wasn't as into it as you might expect. Weak finish as well with Hash falling to a chop of all things.
  11. When I selected the chapter I actually thought it was going to be Misawa/Kobashi vs Kawada/Taue. My brain had autocorrected the match listing! The main aim was to build up the TC match, but it worked better as a reunion of sorts. I dug the one-upsmanship dynamic between the two K's. What a deadly combination they were. The contest got off to a strong start. A bit too strong in retrospect. The middle section was Misawa in peril. The stretch suffered as too many big moves had gone before. Having a half nelson suplex on the floor halfway through was pure overkill. So towards the end the level didn't escalate and was trending downwards rather than up. There was still lots of quality action and it was a very good contest. With these legends the bar is set sky high. Nice moment as the Four Corners took the fans applause afterwards.
  12. Gnarly, mondo and way cool. Yammmamoto had gone up a level or two since I last saw him. I never knew he got this good. Kohsaka ruled as well although that didn't come as a surprise. The opening matwork was lightening paced and so fluid. No that wasn't Han or Tamura in there. The intensity was so high that both guys were soon sweating buckets. The standing/striking that followed was really stiff and crisp as well. Both removed their gumshields as they were gasping for breath. If there's one thing I'd add it would be a few longer perilous submissions. That's what really does it for me down the stretch in shoot style. They kept the pacing tight with not a wasted moment. Crunching knockout to finish. I'm now starting to buy the hype about the next Rings bout on the set.
  13. Here we have it; the best match in the history of Nitro. I'd say it stands comparison with any US TV match from the decade. At the time it didn't get its dues for whatever reason, probably the Godawful booking later in the night. I've seen a whole lot of love from people rewatching the era. The benefits of hindsight. A career highlight for Page, who was outstanding in his role as the heel. Early on he was wrestling defensively to try and stall Stings momentum. His jaw-jacking really got the fans riled up. After weathering the early storm DDP worked the challenger over with an offensive repertoire drawn straight from the cheating heel playbook. With Sting being such a great babyface they got the fans totally hooked. The atmosphere was electric throughout. A full length 20m encounter with strong pacing and clever strategizing. All very well thought out and executed. They utilised not only big moves but the threat of them too. A sophisticated stretch with excellent near falls. The tombstone spot always worked a treat and the finish was tremendous. Sting becoming World Champion was a feelgood moment. MOTYC.
  14. FMW vs the BAT in angry interpromotional warfare. The condensed backstory is that the FMW boys asked their counterparts for feedback on their in-ring images, and they received some honest answers. No shortage of dislike was displayed. Early on I was concerned there'd be too much no selling as everyone was trying to look tuff. That abated as it became clear they were gunning for a blowaway match. With so many combatants and their unfamiliarity there were always going to be fluctuations in the quality of the work. Overall I was impressed. Some stiff strikes, brutal bombs and a lot more submissions than you'd normally see in a multi-man. The over the top rope elimination rule is always a positive in my book. It allows more options, adds a new dynamic and makes comparatively shorter durations more realistic. Whoever booked this did an excellent job. The weaker guys were got rid of first, the eliminations were well spaced out and the narrative was very good. Team FMW went 1 vs 2, and despite a valiant effort Gannosuke finally fell to sole survivor Ikeda. Despite the suspect quality of some of the raw materials, the end product came out really well.
  15. I appreciated the early restraint as they slowly built it up in a traditional manner. The outsider had the best of the opening 10m. Mutoh fought back with a 5m period of leg work. Then Tenryu began hitting finishers to set in motion 10m of stretch. It was certainly compartmentalised, but well structured overall. There was a real world title atmosphere, helped along by either result being a realistic possibility. At times there were shades of an IWGP title classic. The problem was that both men were physically well past their peak. That led to sloppiness and held the level back from where they wanted to go. Still a commendable effort.
  16. This didn't look all that promising on paper. The Estrada vs Metal exchanges were unimpressive, mainly due to the bigger addict of the two. Fuerza vs Rey Rey balanced them out. The surprise was how well Winners performed. He's a guy I normally can't stand. Espectro was also bringing the goods in opposition, making him wrestle rather than dance. A lengthy and action packed primera. For the second the rudos owned the tecnicos 2-0. A rare outcome. The type of midcard bout that fulfilled its role on the card perfectly. Warm up the crowd for the feature matches without wearing them out.
  17. Far too much cancer in the world.
  18. Were they really in the Tokyo Dome? It didn't sound like it, with an atmosphere worthy of the occasion. You had two offensive juggernauts colliding. Vader was a physical monster as well, and unleashed a devastating opening salvo. He nearly put Misawa away in record time. The longer the match went on the more it turned in the challengers favour. The champion came back again with some nasty suplay before the home hero came through to claim the gold with the running elbow of death. His 5th and final Triple Crown victory. Extremely hard hitting, high intensity and compact. Perfect for the Dome. Very exciting and the highlight of Vader's excellent tenure in Zen Nihon. Drawbacks were a little move repetition and a slightly awkward STF before the first momentum switch. One of my top bouts so far this year. I'm sure the fans would've gone home happy.
  19. Whatever effect they were going for with the lighting was not working. WCW production compared to the WWF was so amateurish. Berlyn did have an awesome new look. Was that Karl Lagerfeld accompanying him? The translator thing worked well as a one off. That kind of thing would soon grate if overdone. He challenges Buffy, who I guess is still somewhere in the bookers minds.
  20. Even for AAA the amount of playing to the crowd was ridiculous. Over and over again. The opponent was standing right next to them and they're gazing into the audience. A one fall 10m bout that felt way longer before postmatch shenanigans that I'd have a hard time explaining.
  21. True Joey. I doubt they've too upset about going onto international fame and big money contracts rather than hanging around your shitty promotion.
  22. Sounds like her bag and this lawsuit have a lot in common. But hey she gets some publicity for Playboy now she's no longer on WWF TV.
  23. This company sure knows how to make heel champions look weak. As underwhelming a first title win for HHH as you could not wish for. Really bad booking.
  24. The Fink was great in this as the weedy little guy trying to be a big, tough wrestler. Cutting a promo in his ring announcing voice was hilarious. I'm not surprised that Jericho gave up the Double Powerbomb move before long. That's got to put massive strain on your back.
  25. For a follow up single I thought this was alright, although the singing leaves a little to be desired. The video is fun. Literal interpretations of the lyrics always make me laugh.
