  1. That was an awesome entrance. It made the reveal that it was Shawn even better. Hunter & Chyna come out after that & they bring a barbeque with them. Hunter & Shawn make dick jokes for a few minutes & include Owen in one of them. Hunter says he'll defend his European Title against Owen next week. Shawn talks himself up again & cuts a promo on Austin. He finishes by saying he doesn't lay down for anybody. They throw marshmellows into the crowd to close. Good segment that got annoying with the dick jokes, but I liked Shawn addressing Austin.
  2. Vic Venom curses & we get a look inside WWF RAW Magazine. Cool commercial.
  3. Exposer

    Bob Holly

Holly-JBL matches in October 2004 are awesome brawls. Ditto to the Hass tags vs MNM. He has plenty of good matches on Velocity. I don't subscribe to the great match theory so I'm a fan of Bob. I don't find him mediocre at all. Very solid worker who usually looked pretty good wherever he worked on the card.
  4. The video package is great. No wrestling company will ever match WWE in video packages. The early going is famous for Shawn taking the back body drop onto the casket. We don't see the slow motion so it doesn't look as bad in regular speed. He must have been hurting a lot after the match. Taker takes a huge bump into the stairs. Pretty brutal one in fact. Shawn beats him with the stairs & piledrives him on them like he did at Badd Blood. The match slows down to a halt & gets pretty uninteresting for a few minutes until the casket teases start to come into play. The teases & false finishes are great here. Shawn signaling for the crotch chop only for Taker to grab his nuts is a great spot. Taker makes a comeback but misses his flying clothesline on a good cut off. He rolls into the casket & Shawn hits his flying elbow drop into the casket. Great spot. Hebner closes the casket on both guys like a dummy which confuses the crowd. Closing the lid as both competitors are in the casket is stupid. It only makes sense to wait until one of them crawls out. They do this twice before they battle back into the ring. Taker hits a tremendous chokeslam on Shawn. Shawn got great height on that. Taker signals for the tombstone & hits it from the apron into the casket in an amazing spot. Totally insane. That looked awesome. Taker's about to win when the NAO & Los Boricuas show up & attack him. The fans chant for Kane & he shows up to a big pop. Kane clears the ring as HHH & Chyna remove Shawn from the casket. Kane does his hand taunt. I'm not sure if fire was supposed to come out of the turnbuckles or not. Either way, it was a bit awkward because the crowd & I were expecting it. Kane turns on Taker though & chokeslams him into the casket. Fans boo. Shawn retains & DX get out of there. Bearer shows up & he & Kane lock the casket. They drag it to the entrance where Kane destroys the casket with an axe. In a classic moment he sets the casket on fire in a tremendous visual to close the show. Solid match with a hot finishing run. The post-match is very famous. This Rumble is a successful one, because I'm left intrigued moving forward. Austin-DX & Taker-Kane are two very hot programs with Tyson being in the mix really making things interesting.
  5. Ok Rumble. Better than 97. In the pre-match it shows Shane & Tyson hanging out. Funny. The biggest issue with this one is Austin is the obvious winner & there's no one else who one could even pretend might win it. It hurts the match a lot because of it. Funk is awesome in this. He's there for the entire first half & directing traffic really well. He does his goofy selling & has some fun interactions. He & Cactus being the first two in is great. They have chair wars & Funk swings his chainsaw at chairs Foley throws in the ring. They smash each other's skulls in willingly in a crazy spot. Funk chopping The Rock to the crowd's pleasure a little later on is fun too. Owen is booked here as the second baby face behind Austin. He gets atttacked by Jarrett in the aisle & comes back later to eliminate him to a thunderous pop. Owen is really over at this point. HHH cost him the match by breaking his crutch over his back a few minutes later. I didn't like The Nation casually beating each other up. They should have worked together in this, but they never did. Faarooq immediately going after The Rock is fine, because that's consistent with the story they're telling. #22 is never revealed. We never know who it was supposed to be so this is essentally a 29 man Rumble. Austin comes out to a big pop at #24. He gets a few eliminations before getting taken to the floor (between the ropes) & tossed into the steps by Rock. Foley coming out to each of his alter egos is great. It's probably the thing people most remember about this Rumble. Mark Henry botches his elimination which is funny. Chainz manages to make it to the final 5 or 6 & takes a big bump into the steps. It's down to Rock, Austin, Faarooq, & Dude Love. Dude Love gets eliminated. To further The Nation implosion storyline, Rock doesn't help Faarooq try to eliminate Austin & instead tossed him out from behind. The final Austin-Rock confrontation has tons of heat & is a great precursor to their legendary rivalry. These two already have great chemistry. Austin dumps Rock over the ropes, but Rock hangs on. That is a great tease. Austin hits the stunner & throws Rock over to a thunderous pop. JR"s call of the finish is outstanding. I'm really excited to see Austin's journey to the Title. Tyson praises Austin in the post-match. He's a big Austin fan. Austin seems like an asshole for trying to fight Tyson. Tyson wanted to be friends. It's consistent with Austin's character to not like him though. Just an observation. Anyways, a decent Rumble with a great finish. Austin is the biggest star in wrestling at this point.
  6. Fun match. Vader getting pissed after Goldust kissed him & leveling him with a clothesline is a great spot. The finish is awesome with Vader hitting the Vader Bomb with Luna on his back. Luna took a big bump herself on that. The crowd loved it.
  7. I loved Shamrock immediately brawling with Henry & The Nation as he came into the ring. That's a really good detail that's missing in a lot of today's WWE. Honky Tonk Man is still around at this point which is ludicrous. Goldust is in his third outfit of the evening. He had one hell of a wardrobe during this period. Cactus comes out, then Austin to a huge pop. Austin comes from the other side of the ring though & stuns Phineas Godwinn to a mostrous pop. He dodges everyone else & taunts up the ramp. However, Rock, D-Lo, & Savio attack him from behind on the stage. I laughed when they played Austin's music again as a tease only for him to still be getting pummeled. This is a hot segment & a great go-home for the Rumble. Awesome RAW.
  8. Tremendous segment. DX come out & mention Kane splitting from Paul Bearer the previous week. Shawn introduces Kane as the newest member of DX, but Taker comes out instead. Taker says instead of bringing family into the conversation they should start fighting now & grabs Shawn's throat. The pop he gets for lifting Chyna for a chokeslam is nuts. DX overcome him though & beat him down until Kane's theme hits to a massive pop. Kane comes to the ring & DX thinks he's there to help but he grabs Shawn by the hair. HHH saves Shawn & gets out of dodge too as Kane stalks them to the back. Kane stops at the ramp & puts his hand out as a sign of friendship & brotherhood to Taker. Taker responds with the same. Great moment with JR doing a tremendous job of calling it. One of the best RAW segments of all-time. Classic stuff.
  9. Vince says the WWF has invited Tyson to the Royal Rumble & announces Tyson will be on RAW next week. I loved him acknowledging the boos from the crowd. It's clear the Mr. McMahon character was planned at this point.
  10. Mankind coming out right after the Cactus promo is a great bit of detail. Goldust dresses like Dude Love & Luna is a Dudette. Barely a match as Austin comes out to a huge ovation & stuns both before leaving. They way they built Austin up for this Rumble is great. A total loose cannon who looks unstoppable on his quest for the Title.
  11. Great promo from Cactus inside Beaver Stadium. He talks about his relationship with Terry Funk interspersed with clips of their Japananese death matches together. He makes fun of the Chainsaw Charlie gimmick, but in a positive way. He hypes of the feud with the NAO to finish. On location promos are always my jam.
  12. Rumors of Hogan being in the Royal Rumble. The rumors that circulated during the Monday Night Wars must have been crazy & fun to read & speculate on.
  13. Cornette introduces the Rock N Roll Express. Weird seeing Ricky & Robert work heel in the WWF while Cornette puts them over & helps them beat down a biker gang.
  14. This is amusing. Mero's mic not working is hilarious. Goldust dresses like Sable & almost trips because of the heels he's wearing. Mero & Vader have a match that lasts a few minutes. The real Sable shows up & confronts Goldust & kicks him in a funny moment. Sabledust comes in & breaks a coconut over his head. The coconuts are what Dustin was using as breasts it seems. Silly segment, but I enjoyed it.
  15. Great segment. Austin pulls into the building in a truck. He's so over at this point it's ridiculous. He said last year he got screwed after the Rumble controversy & that won't happen again this year. Cole says he has a target on him so Austin takes Cole's pin & draws a target on his chest daring the other Rumble participants to come after him. Austin is tremendous. I couldn't find the MTV commercial. It's possible I skipped over it. I loved Celebrity Death Match.
  16. Shawn & Hunter are talking about fornicating with college chicks & have a surprise for the Undertaker tonight. Shawn moons the town of State College. This is appropriately dumb DX material.
  17. Good segment. Shawn cuts his typical heel promo talking about himself & tells Taker to get his "dead ass" out there for a confrontation. The druids come out & place the DX casket at ringside again & Shawn thinks it's HHH & Chyna playing another prank. In a great moment, they show up at the entrance & try to get him away from the casket. He realizes this & Taker pops out of the casket & drags him into with him. The screen goes to black & JR tells us we're in the casket. Strong build to the Rumble. Shawn showing ass is always better than him doing crotch chops & lousy beat downs in his underwear.
  18. The Tyson hype is in full swing. Don King basically cuts a promo about Tyson & WrestleMania coming together. Negotiations are almost complete. Fun hype job.
  19. Average match, but the stage dive miss is a unique finish even if it's mistimed. Cactus & Chainsaw Charlie chase the NAO out of the ring in the post-match. Terry Funk running around with pantyhose on his head & wielding a chainsaw is never not funny.
  20. Goldust wears blackface & comes out as Shaft. Good God. Fun little match with Goldust doing the Flair flop on the floor at one point. Luna pushes Flash off the top rope leading to the DQ. Vader runs down & clears Goldust from the ring. I'm enjoying this feud & TAFKA Goldust a lot.
  21. Great opening with Austin saying he's on the hunt tonight. Do unto others before they do unto him.
  22. I'll comment more on this when I get to this period, but I was a huge Too Cool fan as a kid & was ecstatic when they won the belts here. I remember the Kid Rock concert & Joe C's involvement like it was yesterday.
  23. The first news of Mike Tyson having negotiations with the WWF about working in some capacity at WM 14 is shared by JR. The WWF is about to take over the wrestling world. Really good match. Owen has great fire in this & beats up Shawn all around ringside & even suplexes him on the ramp. A Chyna distraction leads to Owen getting knocked off the apron & into the guardrail. Shawn works a sleeper for most of the time he's on offense & they build to Owen breaking out of it. Owen finally does & the last few minutes are awesome with Owen getting nearfalls. Owen hits the enziguri to a big pop & locks on the sharpshooter. Hunter has come to ringside though & breaks one of his crutches over Owen's head leading to the DQ. DX beats down Owen as the show closes. Great TV main event & Owen is protected here as it looked like he might have won without the interference. It's too bad this goes nowhere. This is probably the last time Owen felt like he was on the verge of becoming a big star.
  24. This is the best one yet with Cornette saying there's no real wrestling anymore & just "Sports Entertainment" instead. He says in 1998 he's going to bring real wrestling back to the WWF. The start of the NWA invasion.
  25. Great segment. The NAO come out & brag about beating up Foley over the last few weeks. They show clips of them brutalizing him & laugh about it. Dude Love comes up on the tron & says he's not mean enough to fight them. He morphs into Mankind who says his heart is frozen from being stuck in a freezer last week! He invites his buddy Cactus Jack to take the challenge & Cactus comes on the screen! Cactus cuts a promo & comes out with a barbed wire baseball bat. He brawls with the NAO in & around the ring. He takes another violent chairshot to the head during all of this. A match begins between him & Road Dogg. Cactus gets the advantage & hits the double arm DDT, but Gunn breaks up the pin for the DQ. JR & King rightfully question why that resulted in a DQ but not the use of a barbed wire bat or chair. Cactus escapes & goads the NAO to follow him up the ramp. Cactus throws Road Dogg into the wooden box that's been a mystery at the entrance all night & suddenly the noise of a chainsaw is heard. Chainsaw Charlie cuts a door out of the box & chases the NAO around with his chainsaw! Classic segment & a really fun one at that. Chainsaw Charlie is an absurd gimmick, but Terry Funk is about the only person who could make it work.
