(I'm gonna go ahead and post all these tonight since I'm gonna be tied up the next few days. I hope to get some time this weekend to read through and comment on some of the other shows. Thanks, Gene) CWA Championship Wrestling (Airing LIVE on WMC TV-5 in Memphis and airing on tape on various markets in TN, MS, KY, ARK, and IN) WMC TV-5 Studios Memphis, TN. Saturday May 5th, 1984 11am cst.- 12:30pm cst. (Opening montage rolls and we go to the desk with hosts Lance Russell and Dave Brown) Lance: "Hello everybody and welcome to another BIG day of Championship Wrestling!" Dave: "That's right we're very excited to back here at TV-5 here in Memphis." Lance: "Back where we belong Davey and right now to go a little more in depth on the subject is promoter Jerry Jarrett." (Jerry Jarrett comes out to the desk and is met by Lance) JJ: "I just wanna say first off I'm very excited to bring the CWA back to Memphis and back to TV-5. Now I know this brings about all sorts of questions about the USWA, TBS, and Ted Turner. I don't want to spend a whole lot of time on this but I do wanna say that I have nothing at all against Ted Turner or Fritz Von Erich or anyone that's involved in the USWA…they are a great organization and we will still work with them in the future exchanging talent and even perhaps doing shows together but we just have a much different philosophy on pro wrestling and I got into this business to bring the best action I could to the fans of Memphis and the Mid South….I have no interest in conquering the world or being a global business…..we've cut out a nice niche for ourselves and have done very well here in the CWA and we plan to pick up where we left off before the USWA and all this expansion business." Lance: "Well I'm sure the fans appreciate you addressing it but we've got some big things in store for the fans of the CWA, tell us a little bit about that." JJ: "You are exactly right Lance and it kicks off tonight at the Fairgrounds in Nashville as we will have a tournament tonight to crown the NWA Southern Tag Team Champions featuring 8 of the top teams in the area in a single elimination tournament with new champions walking out of there tonight…..Then right here in Memphis on Monday night at the Mid South Coliseum we will crown an NWA Southern Heavyweight Champion with another single elimination tournament featuring 8 top contenders and one man walking out the champ!" Lance: "Son of a gun, as if that was not enough….right here on television TODAY…there's gonna be a battle royal and the winner will be the TV-5 Television Champion and that title will be defended here on television EVERY WEEK!" JJ: "That's right and how exciting that will be knowing there will be a title defense right here on tv each and every week! There's a lot more great announcements to make in the coming weeks…but I think we've talked enough, let's get to the ring for some action!" Lance: "I agree, Davey….take it away with the ring announcements." ================================================================== MATCH #1- The Fabulous Ones (Steve Keirn/Stan Lane) Vs. Keith Eric/Aaron Holt Highlights- The Fabs put on a clinic…..much to the fans delight…..Stan Lane hit Keith Eric with a side kick followed by a enzuguiri kick to the back of the head leading to the pinfall. Winners- The Fabulous Ones ================================================================== COMMERCIALS ================================================================== (Lance Russell is joined at the desk by Sonny King) Lance: "I'm joined now by Mr. Sonny King." Sonny: "Actually Lance Russell, it's Col. Sonny King and I want to introduce to you the greatest entertainer in the world today…..the one…..the only…..the HONKY TONK MAN!!" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJdxMwgab0A HTM: "Thank ya very much you’re a beautiful audience…it's good to be back here in Memphis with my people." Lance: "So these are your people here Honky?" HTM: "That's right Mr. Russell, all my fans have come here today because they wanna see me become the Television Champion and then Monday Night I'm gonna bring home the Southern Heavyweight title, then the Col.. Peggy Sue, and myself are gonna set them belts on the dashboard of my pink caddy and head down to Beale Street for the biggest celebration this city has ever seen!" Sonny: "You better believe it…..but there's some more gold I've got my eyes….and I want those Southern Tag Team titles tonight in Nashville….and these guys right here and the ones who are gonna bring it home!" (Soul Man blares throughout the studio as Troy Graham and Porkchop Cash make their way out) Sonny: "These guys are running over EVERYBODY in that tournament tonight and they will be your Southern Tag Team Champions and there's only two things you can do about it…..NOTHING and LIKE IT!" ============================================================================== MATCH #2 Humongous w/"The Fallen Angel" Woman Vs. Terry Daniels Highlights- Woman brings out Humongous on a chain attached to his neck and as soon as she unhooked it….he destroyed Daniels…..after only a couple of minutes he locked Daniels into the Cobra Clutch and got the win…however he would not let go until instructed to by Woman. Winner- Humongous w/"The Fallen Angel" Woman =============================================================================== COMMERCIALS =============================================================================== MATCH #3- 15 Man Battle Royal for the TV-5 Television Title "Superstar" Bill Dundee Johnny Willhoit Honky Tonk Man Mark Batten Mr. Hito Ninja Warrior Jimmy Valiant Bugsy McGraw Thunderbolt Patterson Tiger Conway Jr. Spike Huber Tommy Gilbert Boris Zhukov Ox Baker Bobby Duncum The final four comes down to Bill Dundee, Jimmy Valiant, Honky Tonk Man, and Ox Baker Dundee tosses HTM over the top rope but he lands on the apron and stays there…Dundee Valiant turn their attention to Ox Baker, they double team and nearly have him eliminated But as Baker is going over the top he grabs Valiant and pulls him over with him Dundee grabs Valiant's leg in and attempt to bring him back in….as this is happening….HTM runs across the ring and scoops Dundee from behind causing all three to crash to the floor leaving the Honky Tonk Man victorious as your new TV-5 Television Champion! ============================================================================ (As HTM leaves with the belt held high, 'The King' joins Lance Russell at the desk) Lance: "I wanna welcome out the 'King' Jerry Lawler! Monday night you'll be competing for the NWA Southern Heavyweight Championship." King: "That's right Lance, I want that Southern Heavyweight Championship because it will bring me one step closer to getting a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship….and I'm talking about the REAL World Championship held by Ric Flair, not the one held by that backstabber Tommy Rich." Lance: "A lot of bad blood still between you two." King: "There certainly is….and Rich has all those dopey USWA fans duped into thinking he's innocent in all this and somehow I'm to blame….but these great fans here in Memphis know the truth and that's all that matters….I'll hunt down that clown and deal with him in due time…even if it means going to crappy places like Georgia or Texas…I'll get my revenge on him and hopefully Tommy Rich will never darken the doors of TV-5 studios ever again!" Lance: "Well best of luck with that….but let me tell you there are some heavy hitters coming to the Mid South Coliseum this Monday night competing for that Southern Heavyweight title….we're gonna run down the whole card in a few minutes but I know one person who has it out for you is none other than Austin Idol." King: "Oh yeah, that jerk Austin Idol has always got it out for me….so much that I hear he's hired Abdullah the Butcher to try and take me out in a match tonight in Nashville in hopes I won't even make it to the tournament." Lance: "Speaking of Idol, he sent in these pre-recorded comments directed at you so let's take a look at that while we have you out here right now." (VTR: Austin Idol) Idol: "Jerry Lawler…..I don't know that there are words that I'm allowed to say on television to properly convey my loathing of you….I hate you Jerry Lawler and everything you stand for, Mr. So-called King…what a joke! I'm the King…I'm the Universal Heartthrob….I make this business go round….not you Jerry Lawler! The next belt I want in my trophy case is that NWA Southern Heavyweight title and while it's no problem for me to beat you in the ring….the fact remains that you have the whole promotion in your back pocket. Your buddies with the promoter Jerry Jarrett, you play softball and went to school with referee Jerry Calhoun so the odds of me getting a fair shake against you is slim so in an effort to level the playing field….I have put a bounty on your head Lawler….$10,000 to anyone who can take you out of this tournament. The first man to answer the call is the most dangerous man in wrestling Abdullah the Butcher…if you somehow survive him tonight in Nashville, don't think there won't be others who need the money….people you may least expect…..so called friends might just need some extra cash and do my dirty work…..you just never know do ya? Of course that's the price you pay to be the King, huh? See ya Monday Lawler….then again….maybe not." (END VTR) Lance: "Some very ominous words from Austin Idol." King: "Ominous words Lance? Perhaps, but to me they sound like words from a desperate man who knows he doesn't have what it takes to beat the King so he's gonna try to pay someone to do his dirty work….well that's just fine Idol, I didn't get to be called the King because I backed down from punks like you….bring on Abdullah the Butcher and whoever else who needs the money….I'll be ready and waiting and I just hope I get half a chance to get my hands on you at the Mid South Coliseum on Monday night." Lance: "You heard it from the King, we're gonna take time out and see the King in action later on in our expiration of time match right here in our Main Event today on Championship Wrestling but first we're gonna run down the card for Monday night." ========================================================================== CWA CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING Mid South Coliseum Monday Night May 7th 1984 Bell time 7:30pm NWA SOUTHERN HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE TOURNAMENT First Round: "Universal Heartthrob" Austin Idol Vs. "Superstar" Bill Dundee "Dirty" Dutch Mantel Vs. Tojo Yamamoto Jerry 'the King' Lawler Vs. The Honky Tonk Man w/Col. Sonny King Humongous w/"The Fallen Angel" Woman Vs. Gypsy Joe PLUS AN 8 MAN TAG TEAM MATCH TO BE ANNOUNCED! ======================================================================= COMMERCIALS ======================================================================= MATCH #4- The Brisco Brothers (Jack/Jerry) w/Classy Freddie Blassie Vs. Jerry Bryant/David Haskins Highlights- The Briscos were on their game here and the team of Haskins/Bryant got little to no offense. The end came when Jack pinned Haskins after a belly to back suplex. Winners- The Brisco Brothers w/Freddie Blassie (The Briscos and Blassie join Dave Brown at the desk) Dave: "A great win for Jack and Jerry Brisco this morning." Blassie: "No you pencil neck geek…that was a GOOD win…..the GREAT win will be tonight in Nashville when they become the Southern Tag Team Champions. I hope you bunch of hicks realize what an honor it should be for you to see world class athletes such as Jack and Jerry Brisco in your pathetic ring. These guys are aren't what you bunch of hillbillies are used to….these guys aren't some local yokel who bought a novelty crown and decided to call themselves a king….these guys are bred to be champions and they are superior to anybody you have down here in the CWA and frankly It's embarrassing to even have to be in Memphis and Nashville is even worse…..come on guys let's get out of here before our IQ drops from being around these bunch of simpletons." Dave: "Well, quite the first impression there Mr. Blassie." Blassie: "Go chase a tornado you redneck Willard Scott wannabe." Dave: "We'll be back in a moment." ========================================================================= TONIGHT!!! CWA Championship Wrestling At the Nashville Fairgrounds Bell time 8pm! NWA Southern Tag Team Title Tournament First Round: The Brisco Brothers (Jack/Jerry) w/Classy Freddie Blassie Vs. The New Generation (Johnny Willhoit/Mark Batten) "Handsome" Jimmy Valiant Bugsy McGraw Vs. Boris Zhukov Ox Baker The Fabulous Ones (Steve Keirn/Stan Lane) Vs. Ninja Warrior Magic Dragon w/Tojo Yamamoto The Bruise Brothers (Pork Chop Cash/Troy Graham) w/Sonny King Vs. Thunderbolt Patterson Tiger Conway Jr. Semi-Main Event $10,000 Bounty Match Jerry 'The King' Lawler Vs. Abdullah the Butcher ========================================================================= COMMERCIALS ========================================================================= MAIN EVENT EXPIRATION OF TIME MATCH Jerry 'The King' Lawler Vs. Boris Zhukov Highlights- A good back and forth match here with Zhukov holding his own with the King. At one point Boris fires Lawler into the corner and charges into a boot to the face from Lawler….Zhukov goes down….Lawler goes to the 2nd rope and drops the fist…..1-2-3! Winner- Jerry 'the King' Lawler As Lawler is getting his hand raised The Brisco Brothers hit the ring and attack Lawler…seemingly in an attempt to collect the bounty….but before they can do too much damage….The Fabulous Ones hit the ring and they break out into a brawl on the floor of the studio….As Lawler attempts to recover back in the ring…..Humongous led by Woman comes out and attacks Lawler from behind and locks on the Cobra Clutch….he lifts Lawler into the air and is choking him out with this move…The Fabs are still fighting the Briscos on the floor…..Bill Dundee comes in and hits Humongous across the back with a chair….but he doesn't break the hold….Dundee hits him again…..and again….and again and finally on the fourth one he breaks the hold and turns around and looks at Dundee…Woman jumps in the ring and hooks the chain back to his collar and leads him out of the ring as Dundee checks on Lawler. Lance: "Fans we're out of time…for Dave Brown, I'm Lance Russell saying so long everybody!" (Closing Credits)

Welcome aboard Patrick!

CWA would like to book Abdullah the Butcher on Saturday May 5th in Memphis that morning for television and in Nashville that night at the Fairgrounds.
-
It would now appear that Jerry Jarrett was already in talks with WMC TV-5 in Memphis about bringing back the CWA for longer than the recent rumors would imply. Apparently Jarrett had a deal in place before he went to Ted Turner and made his feelings known. It can now be confirmed that CWA Championship Wrestling will back on the air on TV-5 in Memphis as early as next Saturday morning. Jarrett says that he will still work with and share talent with the USWA even if he and Turner can't agree on a number of things. He has managed to bring a number of key wrestlers with him back to Memphis as well as Lance Russell and Dave Brown. It has also been confirmed that Memphis will recognize the NWA World Champion and will be part of the NWA. There will be a tournament held to crown a NWA Southern Heavyweight Champion, a tournament to crown NWA Southern Tag Team Champions, and an NWA TV-5 Television Champion will be crowned on the first television show on Saturday May 5th. More news and information to come from the CWA.

The Grapplers w/Johnny Valiant defeated Barry Windham/Sam Houston when Grappler # 1 headbutted Houston with a loaded mask and got the pinfall. Semi-Main Event NWA U.S. Title Terry Taylor © defeated Bobby Duncum with a backslide to retain the NWA U.S. title MAIN EVENT NWA U.S. TAG TEAM TITLE TOURNAMENT FINALS The Fabulous Freebirds (Hayes/Roberts) vs. The Grapplers (#1/#2) w/Johnny Valiant Highlights- The Grapplers are in the ring with Johnny Valiant. Michael Hayes comes to ringside with Terry Gordy (who isn't dressed to wrestle) without Buddy Roberts and addresses ring announcer Tony Schiavone. Hayes: "Listen Schiavone, Buddy Jack went out behind the build to..um....relieve himself...and while he was out there he was attacked by three guys that I've been told was believed to be the Guerreros....now I don't know what the heck they would be doing in Columbia, South Carolina but they left poor Buddy for dead out there and he's being attended to by the medics right now, so since Buddy is out of commission 'Bamm Bamm' has agreed to step in and take his place." (Valiant grabs the mic) Valiant: "Hold on just a minute Hayes....I don't care what happened out back to Buddy Roberts...HE is the Freebird that has been competing in this tournament and you aren't just gonna slip a fresh Terry Gordy in on us in the finals...nice try boys." (Sr. Referee Tommy Young interjects) Young: "Michael, Mr. Valiant is correct....I know in many instances the Freebirds are interchangeable but this is not one of those times, it would not be fair to the Grapplers to sub in a fresh man....so if Buddy Roberts can't compete....your only choices are to compete alone....or forfeit." (the fans boo loudly) Hayes: "Well Tommy Young....never let it be said that a Freebird ever quit...I guess I'll fly solo.." (as he finishes that sentence he hits Valiant and Grappler #2 with a quick left hand but he's cut off by Grappler #2) The match is on and Hayes is going it alone against both Grapplers....after several minutes things do not look good for Hayes who fights valiantly but gets cut off at every pass....finally Grappler #1 goes to the top rope in an attempt to put Hayes away, but Hayes rolls out of the way of a diving headbutt as the Grappler crashes to the mat....at this time the crowd starts to stir as Buddy Roberts is seen limping down the aisle...bloodied and bandaged up.....but he gets on the apron..and extends his hand towards Hayes....miraculously as Grappler #1 makes the tag to Grappler #2, Hayes tags in Roberts.....Roberts comes in not exactly a 'house of fire' but putting up a fight none the less.....but Grappler # 2 eventually gets the best of him and hits him with a swinging neckbreaker and covers for the 1-2-3 as Hayes can't make it back into the in time to stop the count.....WINNERS AND NEW U.S. TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS THE GRAPPLERS......as they are handed the belts and are about to celebrate with Johnny Valiant, Terry Gordy hits the ring with a steel chair and the Grapplers and Johnny V scatter and head back up the aisle with the belts high above their heads. Gordy grabs a mic.... Gordy: "Grapplers...Guerreros....sooner or later you pukes are gonna have to man up and walk down Badstreet...and when you do....you are gonna see what me and my brothers are all about!!" (the crowd roars as Gordy throws down the mic to go check on his fallen partners) -

Bill Watts: "Exactly like you said right there Jim, without a doubt this is going to be the biggest event in the history of wrestling. Fans are going to be able to see this event on closed circuit throughout the Mid South and South Eastern parts of the United States. There will be special showings in Chicago, St. Louis, Baltimore, New York, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, and other major cities throughout the Mid West. Fans this is going to be the event that changes professional wrestling and it makes me proud to be in partnership with Jim Crockett Promotions, Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling, and the National Wrestling Alliance." Jim Crockett: "Fans we are going to announce more matches for the card throughout the evening, but I think we wouldn’t be doing the fans justice without talking about the battle royal." Bill Watts: "That’s right Jim. Lemme tell you something… you see this trophy behind us… this is the first ever Starrcade Cup. Not only will the winner of this battle royal get this prestigious trophy but also $100,000!" Jim Crockett: "Perhaps the biggest purse ever for one match but in order to win this thing… you are going to have to eliminate some of the biggest names in the history of professional wrestling…" Bill Watts: "Well to give you a hint at who has already been signed for the match… Bruiser Brody, Wahoo McDaniel, Stan Hansen, Abdullah the Butcher, Kamala, The Vachons, Don Muraco, and Andre the Giant." Jim Crockett: "Fans this is going to be one of the reasons why the NWA is simply the best there is in professional wrestling and why without a doubt Starrcade will be the premiere wrestling event this holiday season." Bill Watts: "This is going to be a night that no one will ever forget… get your families ready and your tickets now!" (Watts and Crockett shake hands as the video ends) (Jim Crockett Jr. joins Tony and David at ringside) Tony: "Thanks for joining us Mr. Crockett, We are all very excited about Starrcade '83 and please share with us some of the big news you have in store for the fans of the NWA and Jim Crockett Promotions." Jim: "Starrcade '83 is going to be a huge event but you are exactly right...the past two weeks have been very eventful...there's been a shake up in the NWA and as you mentioned we have a lot of new wrestlers coming in and a lot of guys moving on to some other territories which is good for the fans to shake things up and make things interesting. One major thing that's taken place is a few weeks ago the Guerreros came in and more or less stole the NWA World Tag Team Championship from the Fabulous Freebirds. We are currently working on getting the 'Birds a rematch but after meeting with the championship commitee this past week it has been decided that there needs to be not only a United States singles championship, there should also be a United States Tag Team Championship and there's gonna be a one night tournament take place this Sunday in Columbia, South Carolina to crown the U.S. tag team champions. Some of the top teams in the world will converge on Columbia to compete for those titles and we will see a couple of those teams in action here today." David: "Thanks, Jim....we can't wait to hear more about Starrcade but right now let's go up to the ring with the new U.S. Champion!" =================================================================== MATCH #1- NWA U.S. Champion- Terry Taylor vs. Dusty Wolfe Highlights- The new champ looked good here as he made quick work of Wolfe, putting him away in under 3 minutes with a flying forearm smash followed by the pinfall. Winner- NWA U.S. Champion Terry Taylor (Bob Caudle is at ringside as Taylor leaves the ring) Bob: "Great win for the new U.S. Champion Terry Taylor." Terry: "Thanks Bob, I'm very proud to be the holder of the prestigious U.S. title, some of the greatest wrestlers in the sport have held this title.....I know we've got this huge event... Starrcade coming up and I plan to be a part of it....so if anybody in the NWA wants a shot at this U.S. Championship....contact Jim Crockett and let's make it happen cause I'm a fighting champion and I will take on all comers." (As Taylor finishes that sentence, "Exotic" Adrian Street and Ms. Linda come down to ringside) Street: "Well hello Terrance, I couldn't help but overhear you say that you were looking for a date for Starrcade....while I do already have the Mid Atlantic Championship around my waist I would like nothing better than to add that U.S. Championship as well....so what do you say Terrance? How about you and I have a go at each other for the U.S. title at the Starrcade..." Terry: "While I do not like the sound of that at all.....I laid out the challenge and you were...um, I guess...man enough to accept it....so yeah, I'll put the belt on the line against you at Starrcade." Street: "Oh Terrance, how wonderful....you are such a couragous champion....it's a shame I'll have to take your title from you.....it's a date! See you in Greensboro." =================================================================== COMMERCIALS =================================================================== MATCH #2- The Grapplers #1/#2 w/Johnny Valiant vs. Denny Brown Spike Huber Highlights- Brown and Huber looked good against the Grapplers but the masked duo were clearly more experienced and broke the rules at every opportunity.
