    Sunny's reinvention continues. Awesome backstage brawl follows between Razor and Goldust, way more intense than almost anything seen on WWF television in '95.

    Turner's bought a World Series (Jim fuckin' Poole...but anyway) and a classic movie library (and colorized a few of 'em), but can't buy the WWF. He directs his board to go out and buy some of them WWF New Generation superstars. Whoops, that got a little eerily prescient.

    One of the better USWA segments in a long, long time. Fun to watch especially after viewing the previous Yearbooks where we actually saw this business with Dennis Coraluzzo. The invoking of Eddie really doesn't feel exploitative--as has been mentioned a few times, Eddie was one guy who really would "have wanted it that way."

    Some good basic stuff here, though Rich is in Memphis stall-o-rama mode. Just as this gets going, Doug Gilbert clobbers Lawler with a chain and Rich captures the USWA Heavyweight title.

    Good performance by Psicosis, even if I don't get why he got a babyface comeback for the victory. But man, talk about a match that needed tightening up. There are easily 5 minutes or so of dead air because of everyone involved going through their spots as slow as molasses. Even the referee is uncomfortably slow, and that's accounting for the fact that lucha refs tend to be slow to begin with. Volador contributed a few smooth moves but he looked a lot better a few years earlier. I love El Mexicano's ring gear and he had a nice power bomb, but otherwise was lost. Even Juvie looked out of it.

    Non-stop action with some sick bumps, but there's some strong character work that comes through as well, so yeah, this is something a little more than just a sick stunt show. Hayabusa is the Man, Hido is an opportunist who can't do much more than make saves, Nakagawa and Tanaka are plucky undersized underdogs, etc. Really good build and teasing of guys going into the spidernets at ringside. Hayabusa even makes a dive *over* the spidernet onto Kanemura, but after Tanaka is power bombed from the apron into the barbed wire, he's out and the numbers overwhelm the babyfaces. Kanemura cuts a promo afterward and the awesomeness comes through even to those who don't speak the language. Pierroth-esque.

    This is one of Combat's best efforts--since the Poor Woman's Aja is in with the real deal, she can junk working like that and work as sort of a gutsy hometown underdog babyface instead, and the match is better for it.

    Fun little match here--Hogan as the guy on the apron working the hot tag is a Hogan that I can tolerate. He gets the pin on Arn, as the Dungeon of Doom run out to prevent Benoit & Pillman from saving, which has the two-pronged effect of allowing the Giant to come in and do the damage himself. We then get a continuation of the fascinating Zodiac babyface turn that mercifully went nowhere.

    Ted's wrasslin' is NOT BELIEVABLE. "Where the Old Boys Play" is a little bit better burn. Sign onto America OnLine TONIGHT for a WWF Drug Program Advisory!

    Brother Ringmaster is introduced as the new Million Dollar Champion, and he leads us through a mini-revival through your television screen. Huge letdown for Austin's debut, man.

    Laaame press conference. Ross is cut off by Scheme Gene, who has another huge name for the Rumble and has to be prodded by Ross into revealing it on TV. It's Vader.

    Either last week was 12/30, or this is 1/13, as they're making reference to the previous week's tournament. Standard studio match--basic and okay, but there are far better PG-13 matches even in the studio. They tease miscommunication between Rich & Gilbert, and a blown double-team attempt nets PG-13 the tag titles.

    First we get MSC clips of PG-13 beating the Rock 'n Roll Express in a Texas Death Match. Jesse James Armstrong & Tracy Smothers, wearing matching pants, help put a beatdown on afterward. Tommy Rich & Doug Gilbert save, but tempers flare as Rich accidentally punches JC Ice in the process. Back to the studio, where a tag tournament is announced with the winners getting a WWF Tag Title shot at the Smoking Gunns, and the babyface and heel teams face each other in the first round. A long video recap follows of the 1995 history between Rich/Gilbert and PG-13, most of which you can find on the 1995 Yearbook for only $9.99. Highlights include JC Ice's mother getting punched, PG-13 losing their hair, and one of PG-13 getting piledriven through a table by Rich. Doug & Tommy are out to talk. Still babyfaces, but Doug is complaining about bias in favor of PG-13 on the part of Randy Hales. Tracy & Jesse James in their matching gear are out to complain about being ignored, then PG-13 come out to state their case, and the brawl with Rich & Gilbert is on. Amazing what a great piece of business the USWA can still draw out of 8 guys the BIg Two had no interest in in the middle of a war.

    Here's a weird one: PWO won't open on my phone through conventional means (this is a new Droid Turbo). Whether I type it in the bar or hit my bookmark, the phone doesn't do anything. It doesn't freeze or hang, it just doesn't respond. This is the only site that that happens with. To get around it I have to go to isup.me and get a hyperlink that way, at which point it opens.

    New Jack: "I just talked to Santa Claus, and I asked him, 'What do you think of Sensational Sherri?' He said, 'Ho ho ho.'" Another overlong, overindulgent match. But for four fairly shitty workers, they kept the pace up, threw in a few neat spots using pastry as a weapon, and gave the fans a truly memorable going away gift. Highlights of PE's entire ECW career follow as I start having nasty flashbacks. Off to be exposed and mire in WCW mid-card purgatory. I will miss that entrance, if nothing else.

    Good match that was overlong. Stevie did a good job holding this together and his countering of Sabu's lariat-out-of-the-corner the second time with the Stevie Kick was really well done, the high spot of the match.

    I liked Raven's act all throughout '95. *shrug* Richards is terrific here and Beulah's reveal sparked a big "wow" (incidentally that cretin in the front row miming for Raven to beat Beulah's face in is a guy that I sincerely hope dies in a car fire). The angle really doesn't make any sense, something ECW's devoted fanbase wouldn't have dared to admit, then or now.

    Hot crowd, but these two simply do not have any chemistry at all. The action is better down the stretch than any part of the October match, but isolated from the crowd there isn't much substance here. Controlling a crowd is important--vital, even--so I'm not discounting that. But it takes more than amped crowd to create a true classic.

    Inoki's entrance is amazing, hampered only by the site of Vader falling backwards off the ramp onto his ass. Not the last time that would pose a problem for him. Now, Inoki is old and washed-up and Vader is working with one shoulder, so for the bulk of this these guys have to rely on their natural charisma and character work and milking every little bit out of a few moves to carry this along. And they do that in droves. This is stiff, yes, but if you take the stiffness away this is worked VERY much like a WWF main event of the time. Move, pause, work crowd, move, pause, etc. Then Vader unleashes just about everything he has. We all know about the German but Inoki eats a SICK chokeslam, as well as the Vader Bomb and a moonsault (!!!--yes, we'd seen it, but not when Vader was packing an extra 50 pounds and in need of his shoulder being surgically repaired). The one thing holding this back from being a top 15-20 match of the year candidate is that Inoki's comeback and victory came a little too easily for my liking.
