I kept expecting Doug Gilbert to make a surprise run-in,but no dice. Rich gets destroyed with the help of a walker (!). "Tune in next week and we'll *still* be kicking the crap out of Tommy Rich!"

[1999-10-23-MPPW-TV] Interview: 'Doug Gilbert' & 'Tommy Rich'
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in October 1999
Christopher and Spellbinder take some very, very low blows at Gilbert and Rich here. Rich was NWA World champion for a whole 24 hours before they found out he couldn't work a lick and had to take the belt off of him. "Doug" also points out to "Rich" that no one has *ever* actually "said anything about 'fired up'" in the funniest part of this. Like with the original Arn parody, there's an undercurrent of viciousness and true heat here that separates this from your average WWF/E parody.- 4 replies

Rich, sounding like a southern Freddie Blassie, wants a doggone fight with Brian Christopher and not a match. Doug Gilbert is out of action with PCS due to the attack by Christopher and Spellbinder the previous week.

A good match, but not at the level of the March tag. In contrast to everyone else, I thought the *beginning* was the weak spot here--the March tag had some beautiful matwork and did an excellent job of establishing Ogawa as a threat by sheer craftiness. Here, the opening portion basically felt like filling time because, hey, we're going 25+. The near-falls down the stretch are good but not quite jump-out-of-your-seat good, and sometimes this feels like two Akiyama-Ogawa and Kobashi-Misawa singles matches than a tag. Still a good match in the series with everyone acquitting themselves well, and while it might be a bit on the long side the finish carries a nice tone of finality to it.

Now *this* feels more like ECW. Grunge has given way to nu-metal but that classic ECW mid-'90s aesthetic is back for a bit. This focuses almost entirely on the women.

Good timing having Taz as the centerpiece here. This presentation really, really doesn't feel like ECW.

I like Val being all-business here--no towel, no pre-match spiel. He hangs with Austin really well--a well-worked match with some big bumps, some psychology, and a clean finish. Not a world-changing event but it stands out as very good in the context of 1999 U.S. wrestling.

[1999-10-21-WWF-Smackdown] Mark Henry and Sex Therapist
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in October 1999
"Wig split" is said. I thought the zoom-out and reveal of who Henry was spilling his guts to was pretty funny. This doesn't come close to redeeming this whole stupid angle but this is by far the best of these segments. -
[1999-10-21] Beyond The Mat preview on Entertainment Tonight

Very good piece that gets across what the documentary is about. Jake's line about how crack "speeds him so fast he can't think about the past" is a gut punch.- 3 replies

Decent opportunity to see CIMA in a singles setting. Fujita executes some moves nicely but turns in a pretty unmemorable performance. This isn't definitive proof that CIMA has made the leap to be a complete all-around singles worker yet or anything, but it was enjoyable and didn't overstay its welcome.

[1999-10-18-WWF-Raw] The Rock & Mankind vs Hardcore Holly & Crash Holly
PeteF3 replied to Loss's topic in October 1999
Rock has a lot of handicaps, between his hurt ribs and Foley refusing to participate. That's needed for the Hollys to be credible main event opponents for Rock 'n Sock. Amazingly, in a match with the Rock in it (granted, against low-level opponents), Foley still draws the biggest pop of the match just for briefly standing up. HHH costs Rock the tag titles but gets nailed by Austin afterward. Seeing Austin awkwardly face off with the Hollys while Rock does his thing to HHH in the ring is an odd little collision of worlds. Austin and Rock stare each other down as we go off the air. -
Way to go, Mick. "I say to you, DWAYNE--you piss on everything I believe in, I say piss on you, you self-righteous egotistical son of a bitch." "The Rock says this--" "NO, *I* SAY THIS." He shuts down The Rock so effectively and brutally here that he actually gets the crowd cheering for him. A must-see segment, partly for Foley's performance and partly because it's so rare to see Rock just completely destroyed verbally.
-
Snow overacts but as we'll find out in several weeks, there is a reason.

Hughes has nothing left to bet, so Faarooq and Bradshaw tell him to "bet the bitch"--Harold Finkle. I'm not sure I want to know what the Acolytes' plans are for the Fink, but apparently he's theirs.

Miss Kitty is now the Kat and I guess this is a little creepy. Jericho answers Chyna's open challenge and absolutely eviscerates her. The title that had been held by Ricky Steamboat, Randy Savage, Rick Rude, and the Mountie is now in the hands of an incompetent woman. Then the breasts line draws a big "oooh..." reaction. Then declares that Chyna is not a woman but a hideous, grotesque freak of nature. As Jericho announces his declarations to restore dignity to the belt, he makes the mistake of turning his back on Chyna and she whacks him with the belt.

I admit to liking Rock's gimmick at this time of not knowing who any of the opponents are that Mick signs him to wrestle. "Who in the hell is Val Venis?!" Rock takes the book once he confirms that he's in it, but turns down Mr. Rocko even after Foley gave him a rinse in the Super 8 sink last night.
-
A career-altering performance for Faarooq and Bradshaw, who are finally going to find themselves with this gimmick. Mankind is looking for The Rock as they apparently have a tag title defense tonight.

God forbid we have a defined babyface or heel anywhere in this program. Booking Rey as a heel is a great use of his talents.

Karina Steen just Tweeted that she got hacked. Owens deleted his media accounts, according to her, so that he wouldn't get hacked also.

I will say that Brian has openly expressed that he's getting tired of the top 10 himself and was thinking of making it be more about topics (What If, Slaughtering a Sacred Cow) than characters. I hope he continues with that. A few recent episodes I think skipped the top 10 entirely.
