    Yeah, people point to this as the Beginning of the End, and there are certainly signs the Nash Regime to come all over this Nitro. But this strikes me as pretty good booking in a vacuum. Wrath gets put over pretty well and the match is pretty competitive and even well-worked.

    For all the talk of "tradition" you'd think someone would be clued in on the fact that Windham was not an "original" Horseman, but I guess Ole has been Stalinized from history at this point. I didn't care much for the delayed execution of the Windham turn, nor for Bischoff telegraphing it. Windham's probably in a better role as an NWO B-teamer than a Horseman hanger-on, though.

    Definitely a fun little match, with Kidman working to ground Rey and Rey playing hit-and-run, including turning a sunset flip into a bulldog...somehow. I guess Juventud's interference last week was a bit of accidentally-on-purpose work on the LWO's behalf.

    "When he's got a 1 behind the 190, it's gonna be--MEEEEEE!" --Kevin "Antichristo" Nash. Then he makes fun of Goldberg for being overly intense despite Goldberg not really acting that way.

    Eddie's little asides to the camera are hilarious. I don't recall Rey Jr. actually *signing* a contract last week, but whatever. Rey as an indentured servant seems like a decent mid-card angle since he's more over than Chavo, Jr.

    Pretty shitty action, minus the Goldberg/Bigelow brawl. Absolutely flabbergasting that they didn't run that match as a headliner--even for Nitro (not counting the non-match last week). I don't see any reason for optimism just looking at this match in a vacuum. Benoit and Malenko get tossed like common jobbers and the divide between the Old Guard and those two, Booker, and Wrath is still rock-solid.

    Don't really know what's going on here and God knows I'm not going to investigate further. Some NWO referee is officiating this apparent non-match, then Goldberg breaks up the party. Nothing segment, but listen to this Palace crowd and try to tell me that "Yeah, Goldberg had to lose at Starrcade, fans were getting sick of him." Bull-fucking-shit.

    Playing devil's advocate--EVOLVE shows are currently $14.99 for streaming and $19.99 for streaming + rewatching the show. They often run two shows a month. $20 for that plus archives doesn't sound so bad--and it's $12.50 a month if you buy a full year. The stuff about how they're "going to" do this and that and "look at" these promotions and the other don't really fill me with confidence, though. I want to know what else is going into this. Even at the reduced price, WWN is the bare-minimum starting point.

    "Wrestling the way it used to be and the way you like it" was SMW's slogan that Caudle opened every show with. Both companies were actively marketing to sheet-readers and smart fans through their videotapes.

    For $20 a month they'd better have basically everything on WWN plus PWG and preferably NJ World, too. But Dave has already said that PWG turned them down flat.

    I should have used "Pillman Voice" because the gun angle is where that really started, but I figured no one would know what that meant. But at least with the gun angle they kept it up for the rest of the show, instead of treating it like a standalone segment like this.

    Per Dave, WCW simply decided to ignore Rey's #1 contendership and run a title re-match instead. Yes, really. "Oh, WCW" indeed. This is a balls-out finishing stretch, utilizing multiple rings in a really clever way. Hey Hayabusa and Fuyuki: *this* is how you get me to care about near-falls, by making it actually seem like said near-falls could end the match and treating them as actual potential match-enders and not just excuses for big moves. Rey repays Juvie from Nitro by costing him the Cruiserweight title. The post-match is just total stupidity. First off, why do the LWO care about Juventud's well-being? Is he a member? Then why was he trying to help Rey on Nitro? Or Was That a Plan All Along, too? Why does Eddie want Rey to make a decision "in or out" when he knows he has him against his will? Why are they running an indentured-servitude angle and blowing it off after SIX DAYS?

    Crazy to see Santo in this environment. I don't know how the WWF expected this stuff to get over with live Attitude Era crowds, but I guess that's what sound-sweetening is for. Fun quick little TV match, in any event.

    Nothing-happening match that takes a backdrop to Sean (Shawn?) Stasiak. So much for the "final confrontation" that we got on the first PPW episode. The Lawler-Hales feud seems to have taken a major back seat lately as well, though there is some lip service paid to it by the announcers.

    New Jack's from Harlem now. "I don't sing about it, I don't rap about it--I go in there and I whoop yo' ass." Man, WWE could use a black guy who's that honest and forthcoming right now. (That sounds way worse than I mean it.) Jack doesn't have much to focus on now, as Jack Victory and giant ass are on the shelf having broken their leg at N2R.

    Nope. Was one of those not-into-Hayabusa people before and I'm still not, Fuyuki's best efforts aside. I didn't care about or bite on any of the near falls and FMW main event style still comes off as 2.9 wrestling--guy takes a big move, acts dead, then suddenly kicks out. On to the next move until one arbitrarily ends the match. I'm still waiting for one of these FMW title matches to surprise me on *any* level--a predictable result or booking tactic is one thing, but I'm still calling out exactly what's going to happen before it does, almost every time. Also, for a guy who's "toning it down," Fuyuki really, really needs to stop trying shit like power bombs off the turnbuckle.

    Yeah, the match itself isn't overly special (though the action is quite good, especially the finisher-countering toward the end), but the crowd is ELECTRIC--one of the very best in a year of great WWF crowds. Mankind, Undertaker, Boss Man, and Shamrock all get into it and it all feels incredibly chaotic without being confusing or losing the plot. Austin fails to regain the title in his "only" title shot, as Undertaker clobbers Austin with a shovel. Your two side feuds until WrestleMania are now set--Russo's fingerprints are growing more evident but the main event scene booking is still solid.

    This was part of a running story of each individual Stooge to go into the boiler room alone to "fetch" Mankind. So all 3 go together after loading themselves up with football helmets, shoulder pads, chains, and other weapons. It doesn't go too well.

    What an uninspiring followup to the angle we just saw...not that there were any "good" options. I don't think I can possibly be compelled to care about a Shane-Sable feud. Hawk was taken to a HOSPITAL(!) and is "breathing somewhat normally."

    And there's your 1998 Most Disgusting Promotional Tactic Award, right there. Well, unless the Ric Flair fake heart attack is worse than I remember. Yes, asking Droz and Hawk to climb around up there is totally irresponsible, borderline criminal, and that's one of about 907 things wrong with this segment. Like the cliffhanger commercial break, and the SHOOT NAMES, and the Owen Voices. A silhouette falls behind the TitanTron and a loud crash is heard. Crowd completely shits all over this and my respect for Attitude Era fans just increased about 75%.

    Shamrock and Boss Man are presumably having it out over BBM costing Shamrock the Hardcore title. Vince puts a stop to that and Shamrock finds himself ensconced in the loving arms of the Corporation, which is now going by that name.

    Chyna is back, sporting her new post-jaw-surgery look. Not that I'm a fan of the Val character but some type of storyline involving him and Chyna feels like a missed opportunity, somehow. Mark is still an affable lovebird at this point and not a sex addict.

    Gloating Vince is back, and that may well be the best kind of Vince. There's almost no attempt to explain why Shane re-hired Austin just to fuck him, though Vince does say he wanted to "make Austin's life a living hell," so maybe one could generously assume that Vince had him re-hired out of spite so he could get revenge for the post-Judgment Day episode of Raw. But once Austin is out and Mills Lane announces that the title shot contract is legally binding, you kind of forget that plot hole ever existed.

    Bam Bam jumps Goldberg in the middle of his fireworks entrance and we have another pull-apart. I'm honestly more pumped for a Goldberg match than I have been in (Yearbook) months, thanks to a relatively simple angle, and a good performance by all the announcers in putting Bigelow over. Pity all the NWO crap has to get in the way.

    This is so, so, SO bad. The bloom is so far off the Hogan rose that it can barely be described. The Hall turn(?) doesn't make much sense either, with his motivations being pretty much nonexistent.
