No I didn't mean that to slight Hayes as I love him as a worker but Gordy was the workhorse of the team. Hayes held his own but he wasn't Gordy.

Terry Gordy was the superworker, Michael Hayes was the supertalker, but it was Roberts who was the man who made this act complete as he could both work and talk. We don't have a lot of Buddy pre-Freebirds other than Dale Valentine footage from Southwest in 78-79 but when he joined the Birds he was the guy who could get his ass kicked by the faces while pissing them off in tag matches and then in the rare singles matches which is what I enjoyed the most, he was able to show off his unorthodox working style. Roberts was kinda like Ronnie Garvin in that he used his whole body as a weapon and would do things that you would never see in matches which wasn't movewise but strikewise. Roberts doesn't get enough love with the mainstream online wrestling community as he was always overshadowed by his "brothers" but a few of us on here recognize how damn good he was and I hope to shine some light on Buddy Jack. Sting is like a Top 40 artist where he has big hits but the rest of the songs on the albums don't match up with the singles while Luger has hits but he also has albums where the album itself is more important than any single.

I always thought the lost great tag team of the AWA was a heel Rheingans/Billy Robinson team.

Rheingans' problem was that he was so bland. Sure he was legit and had the background but guys like Martel, Hogan, hell even Brunzell were getting more shots because they had charisma. Great worker but I think he would've been much better as a heel.

The Youngblood/Brunzell comparison is a good one. No but he was a guy who was seen as one of the most popular faces in the territory although at that time was starting to drop on the cards.

Youngblood by that time was a former NWA World Tag champion and was a very credible opponent to Flair. That match was mainly done to start Flair's heel turn. Now you can use this one as a better example as Tommy Rogers was low mid-card here in GCW although he was just a NWA World Jr. Heavyweight champ but wasn't in his class. Flair though is at his best here of making his opponents look worthy.

Andre was a huge draw everywhere, especially Andre in a Battle Royal. That card did huge because it was Thanksgiving. That's not to say the other things weren't factors. Flair/Mulligan was an extremely hot feud.

I'm working on compiling my Greensboro results to give some clarity to all this.

Flair rarely worked outside JCP before 1981. He did a show here and there at the Omni and worked St. Louis but he never ventured outside JCP actually until he got the title. Flair got more time on GCW in 1981 but it was nothing like it was after he won the title. The title made Ric a star nationally. The plane crash made Flair a star in JCP....he was on his way before but coming back from the plane crash made him. Also if we are going to be honest here I would be inclined to say that Flair/Valentine vs. Andersons was a bigger business feud than Flair/Steamer.
