[1996-10-25-RINGS-Mega Battle Tournament] Volk Han vs Masayuki Naruse
tim replied to Loss's topic in October 1996
Very fun match and a real performance from Volk Han. Loved his attempts at trapping Naruse's legs to keep him in the armbars at the beginning. Lots of cool spots from Han and man does he sell that palm strike to the body. Awesome finish with him loosing his cool, tossing Naruse over the ropes and getting a penalty putting him one "square" away from defeat, but then collecting himself and locking it up with a submission. Naruse is good too but Han was killing it.- 5 replies

I do love matches that look weird on paper. This was slow going for a while but ended up really delivering once Rick started busting out nasty suplexes. Nakanishi hits a great German of his own. Fun home stretch ending in a ridiculous Doomsday DDT. Worth it for Mutoh rubbing Rick's head while both are barking alone.

There's a lot about this match I liked but it was also very unpolished. Some great spots and high-level offense for a shoot style match. They worked, at times, with a lot of energy, a fast pace, and pulled off some really creative spots in a shoot style context. But there was a pretty extended period in the middle where they were sort of laying in holds and it felt like they didn't really know where to go, and this wasn't just in that middle portion either. But still the good in this match make it very enjoyable.

Another really good angle for this story, and I loved Schiavone noting that Savage is in "street clothes" when he comes out in that ridiculous get-up. I also thought they might have been implying Savage was going to kill himself with Bischoff's over-reaction.

Clearly a different Sting but not yet what he would become. Legitimately intriguing angle that keeps an element of suspense in the NWO story.

[1996-10-20-WWF-Buried Alive] The Undertaker vs Mankind (Buried Alive)
tim replied to Loss's topic in October 1996
I think I actually liked this more than the Boiler Room match. Really good big guy slug fest, and the great build made it feel especially significant. Some cool dramatic moments and a couple big bumps up by the grave. I thought it was sort of stupid to have the guy who actually wins the match be the one who ends up actually getting buried, but the idea of everyone coming out to bury the Undertaker once and for all was cool.- 11 replies

[1996-10-20-WWF-Buried Alive] Steve Austin vs Hunter Hearst Helmsley
tim replied to Loss's topic in October 1996
This is an interesting package with the commentary doing a shooty angle, two future top stars in the ring and them really running with Austin's badass, vulgar persona. The match was fine; the work in the ring was decidedly an afterthought in the entire presentation, but it was worked perfectly competently. -
[1996-10-20-NJPW-Super Grade Tag League] Jushin Liger vs Great Muta
tim replied to Loss's topic in October 1996
This isn't an all time classic, but it is an all time must see, for sure. Incredible, ridiculous cinematic spectacle of a match. I did at times feel that strictly as a match it left a bit to be desired, but as an overall presentation, man, this was something else. Liger's face paint reveal was just one of the great spots in wrestling history. And we get an under-the-ring cam! And the ending. And lots of awesome stuff in between it all.- 6 replies

Nothing exceptional among the large number of really good MPro tags, but this is a still a really good MPro tag. Very fun match, never gets dull, just classic MPro style that's great to watch. I always especially enjoy MPro matches in their Northern stomping grounds, great atmosphere and a lot of energy.

[1996-10-18-ECW-Plymouth Meeting, PA] Mikey Whipwreck vs Shane Douglas
tim replied to Loss's topic in October 1996
Really good match, a nice mix of traditional wrestling with a strong heel/face dynamic and a more traditional match layout, and still being very ECW where a powerbomb through two chairs feels like as significant a spot -- probably less significant -- as a full nelson. Mikey is really good in the beginning with some especially good looking punches. I really like Shane trying to get over the full nelson as a killer move.- 8 replies

[1996-10-18-AJPW-October Giant Series] Toshiaki Kawada vs Kenta Kobashi
tim replied to Loss's topic in October 1996
Like many hour long matches, this is an incredible thirty minute match stretched to sixty by laying around and stumbling around a bit more than usual, and laying in some holds a bit more than usual. This is still a great match though, and definitely action packed for an hour draw. They do get a little awkward toward the end, but thanks to the consistently good selling throughout the match does come off as being a product of exhaustion, though I don't think it was all that, and even still they were able to bust out some great stuff in the last ten minutes or so, especially Kawada evading the lariat attempts with arm submissions. Lots of cool spots throughout the whole match. This was worked very evenly. Great match, decidedly hurt by being an hour long.- 9 replies

[2010-10-11-NJPW] Prince Devitt & Ryusuke Taguchi vs Kota Ibushi & Kenny Omega
tim replied to Loss's topic in October 2010
With their reunion and having never seen one of their tag matches, I watched this to check out a Golden Lovers match. This was awesome. Fun, energetic beginning quickly gives way to an outstanding extended home stretch. It's non-stop spots but never loses the feel of a competitive match, and they're all selling in a way that makes it believable. They maximize the value of the big spots by not blowing all their finishers earlier on but saving the big signature moves for really hot nearfalls at the very end. A couple very well timed and spectacularly executed big dives also serve a major highlights of the match. This is the best kind of spotfest, spectacular moves at a breakneck pace, but the work matters, has a sense of progression, feels competitive and the near falls have real drama. Strongly recommended. -
The turn on Beefcake at Road Wild didn't quite get over as the real, despicable scumbag move by Hogan that it should have, since the crowd there didn't understand Hogan's relationship with Beefcake, but here Hogan attacking the Nastys does get that across. Really awesome angle. I also wasn't really following the logic of the story with Liz until I read Loss' post.

Biggest match in RAW history! And then they spend most of the match focused on backstage interviews, and it ends in a lame DQ. Match was good while it was going on but never amounted to much. It is cool in that billing this match as such makes actually makes Austin feel like a bigger deal.

Fun stuff, good comedy and especially when the men and women mixed it up it was a lot of fun. Cool novelty, not an excellent match or anything but good to watch.

[1996-10-11-WAR-Osaka Crush Night] Genichiro Tenryu vs Great Muta
tim replied to Loss's topic in October 1996
Oh man! Now this match is a classic, for real. I can't remember hearing anyone talk about it before either. This whole thing is insane and perfect. It has a huge big match feel, both guys at at their best working a big match style, it feels legitimately chaotic, both guys play their roles perfectly and the action is incredible. Tenryu's two big come backs are so, so awesome. Love his first comeback when he spits on his fist and then rocks Muta with punches. Tenryu blocking Muta's mist spray and following up with two lariats is legit one of the coolest spots I've ever seen. This match is non-stop great action and builds to a particularly tense finishing run. So, so good.- 11 replies

I enjoyed the match for what it was, a loose collection of cool looking spots, but in order to enjoy it I basically had to tune out the part of my mind that screamed everything you just posted El-P. Ospreay does have the worst tendencies and I have to sort of actively work to not be annoyed by him in every match. I'd recommend checking out his match vs. Shibata from last year if you haven't to see his abilities actually being used competently in a real pro wrestling match. I liked his match vs. KUSHIDA last year a lot; though it came just up to the line of being over the top obnoxious, but for me didn't cross it.

[1996-10-11-WAR-Osaka Crush Night] Ultimo Dragon vs Great Sasuke
tim replied to Loss's topic in October 1996
Man this is a bit of an unheralded juniors classic. Maybe not a classic, really, but exceptionally good. Even the matwork was a step above what you might expect from these two. The crowd makes it feel like just about the biggest juniors match ever and the action is amazing once it heats up. Crowd is super behind Sasuke and he pulls off some great near falls. Ultimo teases his powerbomb multiple times and it's makes for a great, emphatic finish. I actually wanted this one to keep going. -
[1996-10-11-WAR-Osaka Crush Night] Rey Misterio Jr vs Psicosis

Fun match. Nothing special within their series, though the springboard hurricanrana on the apron was an awesome spot. The crowd was really appreciative and found it all very novel, which was cool.- 10 replies

It's been a while since I've seen this and it sure held up. This match was non-stop fun and had a great sense of progression. In the beginning the action is pretty even, a bit of comedy, some mild dive teases but the action continues at a fast but relatively low-intensity level. Then Kaientai really start heeling out and the heel/face dynamic become more pronounced, the action gets more contentions and the dive teases get more, uh, teasier? Then there's the first awesome explosion of dives that sets off a ball to the wall home stretch, move after move and dive after dive. Awesome crowd the whole time. I don't know if this is my favorite MPro match, but it's definitely in my top 10 for the year thus far.

Another great angle. Hogan is really on a different level of devious here than he has been before. The monster truck was just goofy considering it just sat there and didn't run over the table like Hogan was talking about.

This is up there with the lamest stories WWF has ever done.

These two vignettes were really cool, really bridging a gap between classic WWF cheesiness and the more edgy but still outlandish direction this sort of thing would take in coming years. This is getting me excited for the match.

I'd pay the $120 yearly fee for full access to their 2002-2007 shows.
