I think Crash Holly was under their watch, no?
-
I haven't watched my copy in probably 15 years or more, and have no idea where it is (I'm not the most organized person you'll ever meet), but I could have sworn that I had seen the entire match.
-
I bought a camcorder version of the Superbowl show at an indy show years ago, and I believe that match was in its entirety. I was surprised to read here that it wasn't available in full because I've only watched the full version of this show.
-
If I ever won a ridiculous amount of money in the lottery, I will run an indy show in Cheyenne, Wyoming and pay any price to bring in Tracy Smothers as a "hometown" babyface just to prove this segment wrong.

[1992-10-17-WCW-Saturday Night] Up Close w/Paul E. Dangerously
Cox replied to Loss's topic in October 1992
I believe Paul E. has also claimed Watts to be an anti-Semite, but it's also possible that Watts was being a dick to get Heyman to quit and get rid of that contract.- 10 replies

I suppose there is a difference between working together and liking working together. Maybe Flair and Bret disliked working with each other so much, it adversely affected the way they looked at their own matches together.

A "what if" from Foley's book: what if Cactus and DWB had been put together as an underneath tag team in 1990 WCW? I think DWB would have been good enough to stick around even after Cactus wound up quitting.

[1992-10-03-WCW-Saturday Night] Interview: Shane Douglas
Cox replied to Loss's topic in October 1992
We can blame Watts for Shane using the belly to belly as the ultimate killer finish for years and years in ECW, since it was Magnum's finish.- 11 replies

Don't worry, the next three weeks are about establishing Horner as an ass kicker and DWB as a huge pussy. Ugh. I always thought it was weird that they played up the beer bottle attack more than the lynching. I thought it might be because SMW affiliates got squeamish about the hanging, but they replayed the lynching on the best of show at the end of the year, and if they had gotten any complaints about the hanging, I doubt they would have done the Kevin Sullivan stabbing a few weeks later.

They really laid it on thick with Horner to get him over as a main event babyface. The next three or four TV shows are all about getting him over at that level, and he simply wasn't charismatic enough to be that guy. Thankfully for SMW and its lack of a true main event singles babyface, Tracy Smothers is coming soon.

I think Mike Rotunda was getting heat from Syracuse University for being so identified with the school as a heel so they wanted that nixed. Between that, Rick Steiner turning babyface, and Steve Williams spending more time in Japan, the gimmick pretty well killed itself.

From this week's Classic WON: Foreshadowing!
-
I've stopped plugging these since I feel like a shill plugging my own stuff all the time, but this week's episode features an old match with Twiggy Ramirez and Low Ki from 1999, so in case anybody wanted to see really, really early Low Ki, check it out. Also features a Biggie Biggs/Twiggy Ramirez match that SLL thought highly enough about to write up a little bit on Segunda Caida last year.

One aspect of this angle not being like typical WWE was that Punk was even off of TV for one week at all. Remember when Cena was "fired" and didn't miss a week of TV? That they managed to withhold every instinct to keep Punk off of the TV show for an entire week showed restraint on their part, even if it's probably a stretch to call it restraint. As far as keeping Punk off of TV, I think WWE was "damned if you do, damned if you don't" there. They had built Punk into being the hottest wrestler in the country. If they keep him off of TV, they're taking their hottest wrestler, the one guy people are talking about above everybody else, and not capitalizing on that at all. While it would have undoubtedly been cool for Punk to show up at the ROH TV tapings on Saturday, where would that put SummerSlam on Sunday? SummerSlam is their #3 PPV of the year, and not having their hottest wrestler as a part of that show would have made for a show that would have had no chance at drawing a buyrate. What would have headlined, Orton vs Christian Part XXXV? Rey/Cena is the only match that could have conceivably drawn a decent buyrate, but I'm not sure I would have trusted WWE to handle a pure face vs pure face build for that show. Really, if Punk/Cena draws even one buy more than last year's SummerSlam, then bringing Punk back early was the right call, because this year's SummerSlam without Punk would have died a brutal death, whereas with Punk, I think it has potential to beat last year's buyrate. Short-term, they had to bring Punk back for SummerSlam to salvage the buyrate. Long-term is trickier to answer, but while the viral Punk stuff may have gotten over great on the internet, Punk being off of TV may have hurt him with casual fans since he would have zero visibility with them. While it may have felt too early to bring him back, keeping him off of TV for too long risks him losing the great momentum he had coming off of MITB. I don't know if there is a perfect way to book this angle, but I can't fault WWE for wanting him back sooner rather than later while he was still gaining steam. Of course, being programmed with Kevin Nash in the year 2011 is a great way to lose all of that steam.

To be fair, that's probably because the people in that part of the country are really, REALLY racist.

Super Dave went off the air 20 years ago. More people surely would have gotten Funkman over Super Dave at this point.
-
Gotta say, I marked out for Punk calling Johnny Ace "Funkman" tonight. I think only a very teeny tiny amount of people on the planet Earth will understand that Punk comparing Ace to Marty Funkhouser from Curb Your Enthusiasm, but I guarantee that teeny tiny amount of people loved him for it.

I know you meant "Lloyds of London" here, but given the subject of Rocco the Dummy and how things ended for the Roadies, "LOL money" seems appropriate.

His toupee would have been so much easier to ignore if he hadn't insisted on wearing headgear to make sure it didn't fall off, thus making it all the more obvious. There was one post match interview on one of these shows where Tom Prichard's hair is clearly drenched in sweat and Stan Lane's hair is totally dry that really drove home the point of, "Stan Lane's hair is not real."

Brian Lee had a look but that was about it. He looked like he should be a top guy, but just didn't have it in the ring or on interviews. I'm looking forward to heel Brian Lee in my SMW rewatch (which has been on hold for the past few weeks but I'm going back to it eventually) to see if he's any better in that role, but he just didn't have it as a top babyface.

It's a shame they never really went anywhere with this - I think this was Barry's last TV taping with SMW.

I stopped taking the Heavenly Bodies seriously once it became painfully obvious that Stan Lane was wearing a toupee. I mean, it's probably not a great reason to not take him seriously but he looks ridiculous out there, especially once he starts wearing headgear to keep it on during matches.

I really disliked the finish to this. It made Bob Armstrong look like the real top babyface in SMW, not Brian Lee. Lee looked weak for winning the SMW heavyweight title on a DQ and needing an old man to come in and save him from the top heels. Brian Lee was a guy with a good look and not a lot else, and who needed all the help he could get from the booking, and didn't really get it while he was the top babyface. I don't know that he ever beat Paul Orndorff cleanly, for one, and Orndorff had the biggest name in the company.

I'm guessing most of his print subscribers are also older and haven't figured out this whole internet thing yet. And if they have, if they spent one minute visiting that board, they'd probably never go back anyway.

I wouldn't say to discontinue the newsletter, but there has to be a way to better integrate newsletter content onto the website throughout the week rather than just posting everything on Wednesdays or whatever day the WON goes up. Maybe post stuff on the site throughout the week and then wrangle it all together into the print WON which would be mailed on Wednesdays or Thursdays or whenever he currently mails it out. There has to be a better way to post news than what he's doing now, that's for sure.
