  1. In the end I guess it doesn't end with Dana and Vince - or even Jack Pfefer and the Gold Dust Trio. You have to go straight back to PT Barnum. Abyss isn't a Mankind clone but rather a Maurice Tillet clone (or whoever did the act before him) but that doesn't change the fact, that Tillet was pretty much a carnival freak show character who fought. I hate the Russo/McMahon/Dana talking points on the web. Watch different promotions from different eras and notice the different styles, target groups and promotional tactics. There is not one single philosophy (promoting, booking, wrestling) that everybody should use by copying the great XYZ.
  2. From the WON 10/31/88 thread "There are a few wrestlers who were admitted heavy steroid users who have had children born with major birth defects." Do you know any instances?
  3. I wonder what you guys think of Jimmy Hart as Peggy Sue in 1988 :-D
  4. UFC is to the WO team what WWE is to modern independent wrestling - they think they have to adjust their thinking to it. Now we all know that these kind of indy promotions suck, but I fear nobody thinks the same of writers
  5. There is a German soccer site that has had some features about players who retired prior to 1990 who told stories how they abused medications, it even shocked me who knows quite a bit about substance abuse through wrestling. Somebody who debuted in 1972 said jokingly to his wife "If I die don't don't bother to bring flowers to my grave, nothing will ever be able to grow there". It couldn't have been healthy not to train for weeks but to play in every (weekly) game where they were getting shots prior. I wonder if there are features like that in other sports media. Some years ago, I thought meds and drugs only became popular after 1990. With this and especially the Tour de France in mind I am beginning to think that pro wrestling wasn't more drug-ridden than other sports . The communists certainly outdid them.
  6. I have the urge to start a "Politicians are the better workers" meme as they tend to lie ("work") in media, too. And "Everything but wrestling is wrestling".
  7. You can never drink too much. It just shouldn't collide with your job performance. She probably tried to piss people off. I once met up with an indy wrestler on a cold February morning, he was rather intoxicated and had lost his jacket at some point during the night, yet after a 7-9 hour drive where he wasn't the driver he worked a show without a hitch. And after that there was another drive like that and IIRC he wrestled the next day without anything even resembling a sleep. Wrestlers are like that. I wasn't at a 2002 Jake Roberts show, but apparently he was always a horrible drunkard. Yet, when his entrance theme came on he drank half a bottle of whiskey in one gulp and managed to turn his internal switch on - he was an absolute pro during the match
  8. You overestimate the power of Vince McMahon over here. Klitschko fights are on network tv and get high ratings, the boxing industry has a lot more power. And comparing the anti-UFC camp with the once from the mid-90s there is pretty much no difference as far as I could see, just conservative politicians and boxing promoters trying to get MMA banned. UFC had to air their shows after 11PM. Once they aired it at 10PM. Insta-ban. Same thing happened with WWF 15 years ago.
  9. So basically heels told Dave how Monsoon undermined them and Dave had to agree with them. I haven't noticed it either yet, but if its true he has a very strong case
  10. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJDDHnSNCc8...feature=related > Benny Hill
  11. As I work for a wrestling homepage I am in constant need of sources and material. One thing I have noticed is that constantly wrestling homepages are disappearing, just think of the end of Geocities. Because of that it is quite difficult to compile results and title histories for some promotions, especially late 90s independent promotions like OMEGA, AWC, SCW and NWA 2000. I hope somewhere somebody has a mirror of whoowrestling.com, those promotions had their respective sections over there. So do you have old bits and bytes lying around collecting data-dust? Maybe in the end RSPW will be again the only available source. That would be weird and hilarious
  12. I never knew this is an issue. I wonder what other people have to say about it who were able to experience both types of olympic coverage (good: Europe / bad: USA) . And are the Canucks doing it wrong, too?
  13. Helena MT: February 9, 1938 (Auditorium) ... (Mud Match) Cy Burns beat Young Hitler (2-1) Salt Lake City 03/10/1940 Joe Parelli beat George Wilson, Del Kunkel beat Ted Christy, Wally Thompson & Al Newman beat Leo Papiano & Leo Kirilenko, Vardy Cutler beat Martin Zykoff, Jacques Eku beat Adolph Hitler As always the wrestling business has already done what whacky ideas we have nowadays
  14. While Croatia was not really against Hitler (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independent_State_of_Croatia) Babinsack is a fucking retard to make that assumption. Edit: To clarify, nobody, absolutely nobody I know who wasn't a child during WWII and had military trading cards back then knows anything about WWII era weaponry. Why should a child of immigrants (I assume she is) know anything about WWII at all?
  15. I was once able to find a Supertape IV review by Russo from around 91/92. For some reason I'm unable right now (non-english google settings tend to be a problem)
  16. "I realized today that I could indeed reach my childhood dream! I read on a wrestling website today that one doesn’t really need to actually have a job in a certain industry in order to be a part of that industry. All you have to do is write about it on a website and send it out into cyberspace and faster than you can say "We Have Liftoff" You are in the industry!" Apparently he read Vince Russos rspw reviews
  17. My OS went to hell so I couldn't post this question anymore - Around 1984 you had El Falcón and Blue Demon, were these the famous luchadores or just copy cats? Bix, do you know anything about it? Great show
  18. - What happened when Fumihiro Niikura had his alleged heart attack - Who was responsible for all those UK guys who appeared in Stampede over the years
  19. Who here wants to say that all those Hall of Fame guys ECW used in 1993 were a success? Granted, I like to watch that era of ECW, but it was not anything to write about. There is a reason why Terry Funk was the only one of them who really connected with the Philly hardcore fans
  20. Never read them. Where can you get them? By the way, this is a link to Barthes http://www.tcnj.edu/~miranda/classes/theor..._wrestling.html [3] is interestingly the anti-thesis to Southern Wrestling with its in-match stories.
  21. Just glanzed over both articles.... could it be, that Babinsack has written the worst article on wrestling ever?
  22. Article about the NBA ref Donaghy with a nice wrestling analogy
  23. Interviews with Dave Barbie and Tim White and whoever else handled Andre would probably not shed a good light on him
  24. Nice match, but I wouldn't say Reese was bad. What did he fuck up? He was the perfect cannon fodder that is needed in squash matches. This guy on the other hand...
  25. I just watched Tito Santana vs Ed Dean (4/25/87 Superstars) and Dean blew a hammerlock reversal and a leapfrog spot. This reminded me how awesome superstar vs incompetent jobber matches can be. Like, there was an Iron Sheik match from the European IWCCW tapes where he had some +250 slob opponent and at the end just gutwrenched him into oblivion and I bet his opponent didn't know that spot (might have been the Dublin Destroyer) I could have posted this in "Make That Comp!", but a mere listamania should be enough for me, as I might have other "gems" unbeknown to me So give me your clueless, give me your incompetent, the technically impaired and all the guys who had a couple hours of training by Paul Roma prior to their TV debut. I just like watching stuff where every spot might lead to bodily harm (*tries to ignore Chuck Austin*)
