[1996-01-29-WCW-Nitro] Ric Flair vs Hulk Hogan
Jack_Briscoe_Is_My_Hero replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
Notice how they find a way for Hogan to lose but not cleanly. Sure Flair is dirty and willing to do whatever it takes to win, however I do not see Hogan taking anyone's best move and laying down for the 1-2-3.- 9 replies

[1996-01-29-WWF-Raw] Mankind vignette
Jack_Briscoe_Is_My_Hero replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
Kronos my sound is lower on these raw shows too, but on the computer it works out ok. This was a tease (even though ECW broke the news already) that Cactus Jack was coming to the WWF. Were fans disappointed that it wasn't exactly Cactus Jack who came on the scene but rather Mankind? -
[1996-01-29-WWF-Raw] Billionaire Ted Skit
Jack_Briscoe_Is_My_Hero replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
The lawsuit seems to be the catalyst to the Billionaire Ted skits really jumping off the deep end. The lines Loss mentioned are quite good, and in some cases what fans were actually thinking. Eric did state his intent of Nitro was to put the WWF out of business.- 13 replies

[1996-01-27-WCW-Saturday Night] Steven Regal vs Dusty Wolfe
Jack_Briscoe_Is_My_Hero replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
I love Tony and Bobby answering a question from a Finley who couldn't hear them through the camera. This once again represents something you don't see today. I suspect overproduction being an issue today.- 13 replies

[1996-01-27-USWA-TV] J.C. Ice vs Tracy Smothers
Jack_Briscoe_Is_My_Hero replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
Good little TV match, which seems to be commonplace in the USWA. They have that small crowd that they keep rabid and they echo around the studio. These two do some short but good mat wrestling. Smothers the major heel wins with a flag pole to the prone knee of Mr Ice. -
[1996-01-27-USWA-TV] Jerry Lawler and Doug Gilbert
Jack_Briscoe_Is_My_Hero replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
Yeah this could have easily taken place in a bar after Gilbert crawled out of the trailer park. -
Don't know much about Albright, but he throws a mean suplex. The crowd knows when Hansen throws the Lariat that its a death blow. Hope to see more Hansen as we go along. I like Kronos's comment about AJPW, and unleashing Hell...awesome!

Liz has noticeably grown in a certain area....doubt she has been hitting the gym. Hogan slamming the Giant is not as impressive as the Andre the Giant slam. Paul was so slim back then, and just a tall dude. This match wasn't anything special but Flair did pin the world champ. The Zodiac's tights still look like recycled Booty Man tights.

As a match there was not much interesting, save for the brief mid-match flurry. The Heenan freak out is interesting but without it this match would not be on the set. As mentioned 20 minutes with these two could be very very good.

I usually don't think of the Road Warriors when I think of great promos but this was pretty damn good. Plus the Luger/Sting wedge keeps pushing them apart more and more. Sting is the biggest ignorant babyface in all of wrestling. Luger is the thoughtful heel knowing that beating the Road Warriors maybe one of the toughest tasks in tag team wrestling, he tries to weasel his way around signing the match. Also nice to hear that Tony is running the Play-by-play tonight.

This is the perfect way to build your characters when you only have one hour a week. These are quick and move things along. The pieces that aren't the major plot points entertain and break up the serious interviews while adding a bit of depth to the characters. In one line Raven puts over his winning streak over Dreamer, and the reason he hates Dreamer to begin with. Perfect!

[1996-01-22-WCW-Nitro] Sting & Lex Luger vs Harlem Heat
Jack_Briscoe_Is_My_Hero replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
Luger isn't the most fluid on the finish, but Sting is slowly coming around to what Luger is all about. The Luger jumping celebration with the Sting not as happy celebration beside one another is a nice contrast.- 11 replies

[1996-01-22-WCW-Nitro] Ric Flair vs Randy Savage
Jack_Briscoe_Is_My_Hero replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
This change seems odd to me. Maybe it is to further tensions between Savage and Hogan. Maybe it was to gain a "man we better not miss Nitro, the World Title changed hands. The match didn't come across as a big match, but rather a regular Nitro matchup with a big pop for a title change at the end. Crazy as it isn't even the main event match on the show. It wasn't until watching this match I realize that Savage/Flair, Savage/Hogan both were past Wrestlemania main events in the WWF, and are alluded to in the Billionaire Ted skits.- 21 replies

[1996-01-22-WWF-Raw] Shawn Michaels and Jim Cornette
Jack_Briscoe_Is_My_Hero replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
I am on the fence about this Billionaire Ted skit. On one hand there are a lot of personal shots at Ted Turner, yet the Mean Gene line and WCW operating policy lines were good. They did mention that WCW never comes up with any of their own ideas, which I find funny as it wasn't long until WCW actually did come up with their own idea, and almost put WWF out of business with it. I do find Michaels interview a bit annoying and unlikeable. I thought corny was fine here. Also would rate Mean Gene better at the mic than Vince. -
[1996-01-22-WWF-Raw] Vader vs Savio Vega
Jack_Briscoe_Is_My_Hero replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
This is one of the strongest debuts I can remember during this time frame. Vader is an awesome bully. He got to beat up a couple of refs and a retired wrestler that is loved by the fanbase is as good as it gets.- 14 replies

This match was brutal! You can hear the thud of the kicks and even headbutts throughout the match. Dropping Hotta on her head was probably the only way Toyota was going to win. I love intense matches and this was great. No mention of the awesome lime green suit the ring announcer was wearing?

[1996-01-21-WWF-Royal Rumble] Bret Hart vs The Undertaker
Jack_Briscoe_Is_My_Hero replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
Taker didn't hit his stride until like 97 or 98, then REALLY kicked it into gear the next decade after discovering MMA. Bret had a painfully bad 1996. It starts here with not being able to beat the Undertaker, and on top of that was an eyelash from losing the title. Diesels outside interference is all that saved the title. Diesel's attitude before leaving for Atlanta was a lot of fun, certainly something different in the world of WWF.- 13 replies

[1996-01-05-ECW-House Party] Raven, Beulah and Tommy Dreamer
Jack_Briscoe_Is_My_Hero replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
I see what Loss is saying, and I think I might agree. While I really like Raven's look, he is more of a "storyline wrestler" than a cut and dry pro wrestling. When I say storyline wrestlers I am saying that his matches are all about putting over whatever angle he is in moreso than most of pro wrestling. His angles aren't building to a match as his matches are adding to the angles. I find the far reaching angles drawn together in one complex segment fun, and different. Also it made great use of the TV time they had. But no, Raven probably wouldn't be much without his surrounding cast.- 19 replies

[1996-01-21-WWF-Royal Rumble] Royal Rumble
Jack_Briscoe_Is_My_Hero replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
The WWF has always prided itself on its top notch production values. There were two eliminations (one involving a huge name in Owen Hart) missed with 10 men remaining. They didn't even show a replay of the Hart elimination, where Michaels could have been eliminated instead. Michaels winning was a major moment for me as a kid. I loved Michaels with the Rockers, went sour on him during the split, then started loving him again after the Sid incident almost a year before. The race was on to WM 12 and the wrestling fans in the class were debating the impending Michaels/Hart match. Rewatching this I am surprised by the lack of heat. Truth be told looking at who is in the final 10 (which included an Issac Yankem and Fatu I didn't remember being around in 96) there isn't a lot of star power. Diesel and Shawn are the only two that one could see (or want to see) headline WM 12.- 14 replies

[1996-01-21-WWF-Royal Rumble] Goldust vs Razor Ramon
Jack_Briscoe_Is_My_Hero replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
I hated Goldust, but thought Marlena was HOT as a kid. Razor looked good, and I echo the awesomeness of the Kid. -
This was my first viewing and this was amazing. I like the "I'm going to make your limb snap before you make mine" vibe they had. When Otani first attempted the dragon suplex, and he reverses the reversal it crossed my mind that he tried the move simply to get Samurai's leg. I discovered later in the match that the dragon suplex is a big move for Otani, but that maybe thinking too much into things. You guys have said everything that can be said about this match. It is one I will certainly rewatch after finishing the set. Very good gem, that I don't remember hearing many talk about.

The interview has a reality based feel compared to the scripted stuff you have seen the past decade. These two can go on forever in an interview, so its no surprise that it is good.

Out of every body part to work over I have to say watching leg work is my favorite. Smothers some sort of Figure 8 leg lock on never seen anything like that before. Unless he just didn't apply the figure 4 correctly. I do agree with the toughness aspect, if you don't respect both members of PG-13 after this performance you never will. Between JC Ice surviving through intense pain, or Wolfie D going through the first half of the match along it was all awesome. I do like how Gilbert runs in does some damage then sprints out like a rat. Good use of his run-in.

[1996-01-18-AAA] Psicosis vs Ultraman
Jack_Briscoe_Is_My_Hero replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
What is the point of the first two falls? Psicosis is just crazy for continuing to attempt big spot after big spot after they all fail. He could have broken his neck on two or three of those. I can't say it was a horrible match as I was entertained, however I was not entertained in the fashion they were going for. Kronus the horns were not a distractions at all as the microphone is not as good as the television show, and there is a little roar to the crowd the whole match that covers up most of the horns. Almost forgot to mention that Rey's dive was spectacular. Also what title were they fighting for?- 15 replies

[1996-01-15-WCW-Nitro] Ric Flair vs Sting
Jack_Briscoe_Is_My_Hero replied to Loss's topic in January 1996
Sting just went to high risk maneuvers way too often. He maybe hit 10% of his high risk stuff. Flair just kept beating on him, but at the same time Sting had a shot but Luger nailed him with the microphone. Even with Sting being the blindly trusting babyface, I still really liked him at the time. I didn't like the Crow version of Sting as he had to take a year off and it wasn't the same when he came back. Of course it got even worse around 2000. I see why people were starting to hate Hogan. He is a gold digger and all he wants is the title, and cannot stand any of his friends to be at the top of the pedestal. Truth be told that is always in his character. You don't think he went after Liz in the back in the latter stages of 1988 so he could get a title shot from Savage, and make Savage look bad. Hogan talked Bret out of his rematch clause at WM9 right after the loss. Bret was in no shape to make a decision like that, Hogan knew it and slipped in to take the shot. On top of that Yokozuna was fresh off winning the title and Hogan slipped the ref a $20 to ring the bell and beat Yokozuna who was in no shape to fight.- 14 replies
